A better boogie man

I really loved the story! So much so that I listened to it all in one sitting. The reason I gave a 4 instead of a 5 is that I didn't feel it wrapped up the ending as well as it could've. I have a love/hate relationship with cliff hangers. But I really hope there will be a second book. I loved that the name given to the mysterious entity in the book, "Upside Down Man". I loved how the author took the idea of "what if an urban legend turned out to be completely real". A very freighting thought. I'm glad that the author created its own character with its own mythos. Kept it fresh and new. What a fun spooky adventure that was!

Entertaining story for fans of paranormal fiction

This was an entertaining ghost story. The plot seemed very familiar and a bit predictable (kids go into haunted house against all warnings to make a documentary.....), but I enjoy ghost stories and stories of haunted places, so I was able to look past that and just enjoy the ride. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by Joe Hempel, and he did a good job giving everyone a unique and consistent voice. Overall, an entertaining story for fans of the paranormal.

From the very first chapter I was hooked! Very scary stuff. I actually had a very bad toothache the couple days I was listening to the book. But not once during the book did I think of it or anything else except the story. It held my complete attention the whole time. If you like haunted house stories this is for you. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick scare. I was given this book by the author for an honest review in return.

Great ghost story.

This is a ghost story that has Ambrose's this flare all over it. This is the fourth book I have listen to from this author and I really enjoy her work. She definitely has her own style of writing, which I adore. This is a ghost story but definitely had me scratching my head towards the end of the story but then I realized: it was an excellent twist! You have done it again.

Great stories by some great authors!

Let me throw in a little disclaimer.

I authored the final story in this Anthology, so I will not be commenting on that. However, since I had not read any of the other stories until this release, I feel it is fair for me to review the anthology as a whole.

Other than Chris Philbrook and James Dean, this was the first time I have read (listened to) any of the other Authors. They did such a fantastic job throwing their own spin into the AUD series. I really enjoyed them and it felt like an expansion of an already well developed world.

If you havent read the AUD series, you probably wont understand some parts of the stories (like why people have weird dreams). Im counting on most people have, though. Some of the stories indirectly affected the actual AUD storyline, while others were their own little spin somewhere else, affecting people you have never met.

One specific story Id like to point out is Chriss story Only a few miles to home. As a veteran, it is nice to see someone shed some light on PTSD. Episodes can be set off by one thing, or a conglomerate of things. Thank you, Chris, for that story.

James Foster did an outstanding job as usual. I was super giddy when he did Redemption and nailed the African accent. It was awesome!

What a great compilation!

Another phenomenal book that tells more stories that take place at the same time as Adrian's. Some of these directly affect him, while others simply stand alone. Although each story in itself is great, I would highly recommend reading the complete AUD series first.

Stunning Modern Weird!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret of Ventriloquism to be better than the print version?

At this point after the release of Jon Padgett's debut collection it isnt really a question of whether or not you should purchase and read a copy of The Secret of Ventriloquism. If that were a question the answer and therefore the review would be a succinct yes.

There is no such thing as a perfect book, The Secret of Ventriloquism however might be a contender for the title if there were such a thing.

Everything about Padgetts book beckons the reader to enter its macabre and despairing world. The cover art by Dave Felton is truly creepy. The introduction by Matt Cardin is enticing, flattering and scholarly all at once. Most importantly the stories contained inside are truly marvelous.

I have read TheSecret of Ventriloquism about three times now, and listened to it all the way through once.

When I first discovered Padgett by reading 20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism in the anthology Grimscribe's Puppets, I was immediately hooked.

It soon became apparent to me that Padgett has been quietly moving in the dark corners of the weird fiction world for some time. Running Thomas Ligotti Online, as well as appearing in the wonderful podcast Pseudopod as a narrator.

On Pseudopod he narrates both his own stories, and the stories of others. It is these episodes of the podcast that I would often return to while working at my place of employment. I work in a machine shop so Padgetts clear annunciation, and steady pacing is appreciated because it can be heard over the din of the environment. The recording Pseudopod has of 20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism is an instant classic, with record scratches and a deadpan delivery by Padgett. At times Padgetts voice reminds me of the actor Jeffrey Combs.

Judging by the quality of his already released work it was a no brainer to pre-order of a copy Jon Padgetts debut collection The Secret of Ventriloquism when it was announced. To those that missed out, the hardcover, illustrated edition was well worth the expense.

There is not a single weak story in The Secret of Ventriloquism, every short is a chilling invitation to temporarily inhabit Dunnstown. A bizarre city that has been intruded upon (or created by) a malignant god-like entity.

Loved it!!!

This is a continuation of the original series The Last Survivors. I highly recommend listening to that series first so you'll know more about these characters and the world they live in. The Last Survivors was my favorite series last year so I was very excited to see T.W. Piperbrook continue the series! So far, book 1 of The Ruins is just as good! I'm very happy to see Sean Runnette is still narrating this series. He does an excellent job with each of the characters.

This book picks up right where the last series left off. Kirby, Bray, and William have left Brighton. They go looking for Kirby's old settlement only to encounter two new groups of people and more twisted men. I wonder which of these two groups is the true danger. Maybe both! Looking forward to book 2!

Couldn't get past the first 4 minutes

Story line sounds really interesting but I seriously couldn't get past the first 4-5 minutes in the story because the narrator sounds like a computer from the early 90's is reading to me..... I immediately had to go and return it. Nice little reminder for me to always sample the audio first

good premise, there was a lot of potential. I kept waiting for it to hook me.... i really tried. it's not that hard to do, I can get hooked on a TV show that I don't even like is I watch one episode, so when I gonna myself having to rewind over and over because my mind would wander off mid sentence multiple times per chapter, that said a lot. I finally got slightly (very slight) interested and bam, the end. oh well

Lurk keeps you on your toes!

Would you listen to Lurk again? Why?

Yes! The novel is pretty thought-provoking. You don't know whether to trust the narrator, if what he is saying is true/real. Listening to the book again would probably uncover some new nuances I may not have noticed before!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Definitely. You see Drew descend into his own mind, and are on the whole journey with him. Adam Vine very vividly depicts the kind of turmoil Drew goes through, and you just never know what is going to happen next!

Which character as performed by Kevin Meyer was your favorite?

Drew, probably. There was not too too much distinction between characters, especially the female ones. Kevin Meyer captured Drew's emotions pretty well, though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Drew coming full circle at the end really shocked me! It was an unexpected surprise that really added to the creep factor. It also left me with so many questions, in a good way! By the end, you are not sure if you can even trust anything Drew says, which makes it all way creepier.

Great debut novel!

Lately I've been trying to listen to several new audiobooks, but I eventually gave up on them due to poor narration or uninteresting plots. Thankfully, this didn't happen with Lurk!

I was hooked fairly early on and I enjoyed Drew's journey. It was nice to have the main character someone you may not necessarily like or enjoy, but his motivations and thought processes are well developed. The other core characters were also well written.

Now as a horror novel, is it actually worth it? Well it definitely creeped me out/unnerved me a good number of times. The vivid descriptions help and as an audiobook I think it's even better. Kevin Meyer's creepy as hell laugh/chuckle (you'll know it when you listen) was fantastic for example. Though his range isn't broad (female characters weren't distinct) and sometimes it was hard to figure out which character was speaking, I still enjoyed the narration overall.

I'm looking forward to see what Adam Vine writes next!

new twist on horror!

I enjoyed this book a lot ... Although... The narrator seems very prim and proper and middle-aged so it sounded a bit funny when he talked about smoking fat nasty blunts haha but I really did enjoy this book it was very creepy and cut my attention the whole time.

Another Shane!

Enjoyed it very much! No struggle to get through. A great sequel to the others in the series! Can be done as a standalone but I would recommend them in order. Great sequel with the ending for more. Keeping it spooky!

Poor Shane!!

Here's me thinking that The Lighthouse was Shane's toughest job yet, but it's nothing compared to this!! Shane and his girlfriend decide to take a break by visiting an old New England town. They have heard the gossip, "The legend of Abel Latham" but decide to go see anyway. What starts out as a hike, soon becomes a matter of life and death!

This has to be the absolute baddest ghost I've read so far!! Abel Latham enjoys torturing his victims and even keeps part of them in his "lair". He let's his victims go in the woods and then huts them down. When Shane comes to Griswald, he is confronted with the ghost of a boy and his dog. They explain who Abel is and that there is no escape. The town is not only home to Abel, but also to his many, many victims.

Ron Ripley has never failed to deliver anything other than an incredibly scary and addicting read. This one is a lot bloodier, a lot messier, a lot scarier and a lot sadder than the previous two. Shane has to deal with an egotistical and insane ghostly serial killer, but also his two "best friends". I really thought that Shane wasn't going to come out on top this time, and truth be told, he doesn't, but I'm not going to say in what way because it's a spoiler ;)

In all, this was such a scary read. It gave me plenty of chills and spooked me a lot. The plot was well done and well written and I devoured the book. I loved how the author made a reference to his other series too, (which I really need to catch up on because it seems like something major happened in it!!) . Anyway, a suspenseful, creepy, fast paced and exciting read, this series is a must read!! I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

Again, Thom Bowers brings this book to life. He really brings the atmosphere and spookiness alive and knows how to tell the story properly. I highly recommend you check him out.

Confusing tale or two

The very last story (barring the main story that continues throughout) was hard to follow in an audio format. I feel that the Jane/Mason/etc. Multiverse thing would have been easier to follow in print. I found myself rewinding and playing again many times during that tale.

Not that great...

I normally like the Limbus series, but this book was not particularly interesting. Most of the stories were difficult to follow and after the first couple, the narrator became distracting.

not bad but not the best

overall a good book, I think my only complaint is the performance could have been much better. I felt like the reader lacked a bit in his portrayal of some of the characters. I went most of a story not knowing the lead was a female.

3rd time wasn't a charm...

A lackluster end to an otherwise great trilogy. The only stand out was Maberry's continued story of Sam the werewolf. That would be a great series in itself.

Chilling tales.

Since these are short stories, it's hard to summarise them without spoiling something, so all I'll say is that this is 8 chilling and creepy tales. I've read a lot of Ron Ripley's books and always enjoyed them, and these are no different. Each is a little slice of creepy and scary and each is well written. Being short stories, there isn't much character development nor world building, but they are enjoyable little snippets into the authors mind. Good tales to tell around a camp fire!! :)

Jack Nolan did a good job with the narration, his voice is easy to listen to and is clear, but I found the production quality to be a bit echoey. It felt like he was talking in a big empty room.

What does Jack Nolan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Jack has a great voice

enjoyable stories

I enjoyed the stories, and the darker aspects were interesting. I always love ghost stories, and am really enjoying everything I have read or listened to from this author. I did not however like the narrator for this book.
