I will admit that the premise of this book was what grabbed me: mostly because of the imagery brought forward by the synopsis and the intrigue of seeing the Iraq war from the perspective of an Iraqi, and seeing a narrative not usually available to the west. Saadawi has brought this story forward on two levels â the story of the survivors in a war-torn country that is still experiencing upheaval and the horror / fantasy of a created being brought forth to bring interest and attention to the fate of those who donât survive the violence.

It was a bit of a slow progression for me with many breaks: the author brings that sense of hopelessness despite determination to do what is needed to survive, that undercurrent of tension and near-fatalism as people are faced with death and horrors each day with relentless repetition. No one is truly safe or protected from the devastation: personally, neighborhood and even families are stretched, threatened and endangered. Hadi has the idea of treating these ordinary people in a way that both honors their sacrifices and brings attention to the delayed if not forgotten rituals of burial and closure that have been pushed aside because of the upheavals. So, with these bits of people, scavenged from the aftermath of bombs to build an amalgam â a Frankenstein monster of sorts that will help to make a point to the authorities (however many are in âcharge) of the city.

With this horrific creature created, it isnât long before it is stolen and suddenly people are telling of a monster that canât be killed, and the increase in deaths of the âbad peopleâ seem to emanate from this creature. And then â things slide into an âanything goesâ where everyone is potential fodder for this monster â first hailed as a âgood thingâ as it destroyed those who were bringing more sorrow and trouble to the city.

A dark series of short stories

This book of short stories is a unique series of dark studies in character. The stories move similarly to the best Lovecraft, where the mood dominates and despair is present if undefined.

The last story of based on Egyptian myth (the title is in hieroglyphics) was the best, but they all stand up on their own and you'll do worse for $1 for a Kindle book.

Good Reading

There are all kinds of weird and unexpected things to find out there if you know where to look.

Kristine was so brave in âNight of the Vampire.â I liked seeing how she pieced all of the clues together about what was really going on in Darscadia. What I liked even more than that, though, was seeing how quickly she came up with a plan once she figured out what she was dealing with. She was such a smart main character. While I donât know if Ms. Beck is planning to write a sequel about her adventures, Iâd be interested in finding out what happens to Kristine next if the author does write one.

My favorite story in this collection was âLong Live the Bonsai.â It was such a creative read, especially once I finished the first scene or two and the characters started to get to know each other better. Their conversations were often hilarious. I also liked seeing how Caddy and Cody reacted to the strange, little Bonsai tree once they realized that it wasnât an ordinary plant. It was the same way I would have reacted in that situation!

There were certain things about âThe Wildest Westâ that I never quite understood. While I liked the fast-paced and exciting storyline, the time travel sections in it werenât explained well. I would have loved to know more about how that idea in this universe and why the characters seemed to be able to do it so easily. It was such an important part of the plot that I expected the narrator to spend a lot more time talking about it than they did.

The conflict between Erin and Dustin in âCurses Never Dieâ was handled well. I could understand both of their opinions about what they should do with the diamond. Seeing why they thought the way the did was a big part of why I enjoyed this story so much. Both of them stayed true to their personalities, and that made it really interesting to see how they reacted to what happened later on in the plot.

Shivers was scary in a fun way. Iâd recommend it to anyone who likes being frightened.

Good series

This is a good and quick read series. The people were believable and so we're the animals. However , I want to know about the phone call and Cole.

This is the best of the three books. Fast action and cool characters. I really liked this book a lot...and who would not like talking dinos?! Definitely a good read and a great ending.

Interesting mix of fact and fiction

The writing was decent enough. What really interested me though were the biographical details of Lovecraft and Crowley. I feel ambivalence about using historical figures as fictional characters, but I can't deny that it makes for compelling reading when you know something about them.

For Lovecraft fans!

If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or Alistair Crowley, you'll enjoy this short story about how their paths intertwine. A strange Indian character reached out to each of them to reach enlightenment through Cthulhu. Definitely an unusual tale. Great narration by Rick Gregory!

Historical Bios mixed with the supernatural

If you are interested in learning about HP Lovecraft or Alistair Crowley, this book will definitely interest you. This is two short Bios that are tied together by a supernatural figure.

I did not find it scary, only unusual. Definitely stands out from the pack.

The narrator, Rick Gregory, did a great job as usual.

Huh..Scratching my head right now.

It took me a minute to figure out this odd story. A dark journey in the visionary mind of Lovecraft mixed with the dark supernatural practitioner Crawley isn't crazy enough. Add strange Indian, evil spirits and a quest for enlightenment and you've found your book. This story nearly drove me crazy trying to sort the reality, internal madness, and spiritual chaos going on in this book. I requested this book "not realizing exactly what I was getting into" in exchange for my honest review. Honestly, I felt the narration was the best part. I'm sure some of you will love it, but for me these characters were too all over the place. Maybe creating all that chaos was the point? I guess I missed it!

It will keep you wondering what's going to happen

This is the second book from Bart Hopkins that I have read and listened to the Audio version also.

The first one is "Dead Ends". A combination of short stories which gives you the feel of having landed in the twilight-zone.

"The Bends" is a supernatural thriller has an actual connection to the story "Recalculating" in Dead Ends.

It is not necessary to have read "Recalculating" but it was fun to have that connection.

You get some hints along the way but it will not become clear till near the end of the book.

Seeing this book is named "The Bends: Kane Montgomery #1" I'm hoping to see a Kane Montgomery # 2 in the future.

This book was narrated by Luke Daniels. He did a wonderful job and it was a pleasure to listen to the story.

This will keep you up, past your bedtime not because it was scary but because I wanted to hear how it ends and not be bothered by a pesky thing like sleep. As you can tell I really enjoyed listening to this story, the narrator was really good and I think was perfect for this story.

As for the actual story you found you really liked all the characters (well the goodies anyway) and you are just hoping everyone makes it to the end of the book and the three missing child are found safe and well. With a few twists and strange happenings you are kept guessing as to what was happening and what was going to happen.

I hope this is just the start of a Kane Montgomery series, as I will be looking out for more.

Good book

the narrator's was great they told the story wonderfully. they kept me interested the plot was nice. I definitely loved it I can't wait for the next book to be on audio especially if they keep the same narrator's. I have read all the books to this series and I enjoyed them. I highly recommend them.
