    Publisher's Summary:
Carter Coleman delivers a novel about the Rutledge brothers: Cage, the golden boy, Nick, slow to blossom but full of potential, and Harper, struggling to live up to his brothers. When the tragedy of Nicks death throws Cage into the vicious cycles of manic depression, Harper and his family discover the true strength of love in their attempt to hold together a broken home.
    Critic Reviews:
A fresh, original account of domestic love and loss. (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    Fine novel on bi-polar disorder
Coleman manages to write in many voices and have them all, for the most part, ring true, although when speaking as Cage, he rings most authentically. The real topic of this book is not the devastating accident that galvinizes the family into grief, but the bi-polar affliction suffered by Cage and the family's attempts to deal with it. It is particularly vivid to a reader who has not experienced this phenomenon either first- or second-hand. The parts of the novel "narrated" by the mother are not as original or realistic, I would suppose because it is harder for a man to write in a woman's voice. But Cage is a fascinating character; I'd like to know what happened to him after the book ended.
    Great book
Great book! A great view into the mind and behavior of manic-depressive people. Lets you know how this illness can effect an entire family.
Cage's Bend is a must read!
    powerfully poignant family drama
Southern Episcopal Minister Franklin Rutledge and his wife, Margaret raise three sons, born in the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s. Though he once dreamed of a Ph.D. in Divinity Studies instead of father to three rambunctious boys, Franklin is pleased with what God has given him. He worries about the rivalry between his two oldest, Cage and Nick, born less than one year apart, but believes that is God's way. He thanks God that Harper was born a decade later. Cage is a terrific athlete, intelligent, charming and a hunk. Nick, except when competing against Cage, is reticent though he is as smart and handsome as his older brother. Harper worships his brothers and wants to be with them all the time.
In 1987 Nick dies in a car accident. His surviving family struggles to cope with the loss. Cage blames himself as he was the last to speak with Nick; his mood swings soon are diagnosed as bipolar disorder. Harper makes it at Wall St. but hides his loss and his fear that Cage is next with alcohol and drugs. Franklin believes he has failed as a Bishop because he has unsuccessfully brought any comfort to his family. Margaret, though grieving her loss, knows she must help her dysfunctional family heal.
Rotating perspective between the four Rutledges, readers obtain a powerfully poignant family drama that looks deep at interactions and interrelationships when the dynamics change due to the death of the fifth participant leading to new conflicts arising. The key to CAGE'S BEND is that the characters seem real especially as members of a competitive family. Carter Coleman provides a fabulous complex tale of people struggling to cope with loss often by destructive behavior.

    GRAB HOLD
This is a dark book which is fairly upsetting. The characters were all tragic, plagued by their various demons, and without a means of redemption - a sad conclusion for a clergy family.

    Publisher's Summary:
Casey Ellis has arrived at a lonely place in her life. Her mother remains in a comatose state several years after a terrible accident - and now her father has died.
Although Casey never met him, she held an oblique hope that someday her father might acknowledge her. She watched from afar as the illustrious Dr. Cornelius Unger became a celebrated psychologist and teacher. Through it all, she clung to the illusive dream that someday he might take notice of her - and now it is too late.
It comes as a shock when she learns that he has left her his beautiful townhouse in Boston's exclusive Beacon Hill. Sensing that her father had an ulterior motive in leaving her the house, Casey searches the house and finds the first part of what could be a novel, a journal, or a case study for one of her father's clients. The manuscript tells the harrowing story of a young woman named Jenny who was sexually abused by her father and emotionally abused by her mother. When her mother was murdered, her father was sent to prison. After only six years in jail, he is about to be released, and Jenny knows she has to escape. Her way out appears in the form of a man named Pete who shows up on his motorcycle and offers to whisk her away.
Convinced the story is true, Casey sets out to find the rest of the pages and help Jenny. With the discovery of each additional segment, she learns more about Jenny, about herself, and about Cornelius Unger. The manuscript, when fully assembled, proves to be the key to understanding not only her father's past but also that of the man Casey has come to love.

Took Me a minute to figure out everything
Good story. It took me a bit to figure out everything, which means it was well written in my book. The narrator was good as well.
A superb narration, good story too
Enjoyed this story of 2 women on oddly parallel tracks despite huge differences in their environment and consequent opportunities. More than the story however, I found the narration absolutely superb. It's strange because I've often found this narrator too gritty or something, but for this story, she was a perfect match. Great timing and interpretation of the various characters.
    wonderful presentation, riveting story
the author makes these characters live, the narrator keeps you on the edge of suspense. loved the ending, used lots of tissue

Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold
In the fourth book in the Harry Hole series Hole must contend with threats in all areas of his life. There is the clingy ex-lover from his youth, the elusive killer who he is certain murdered his best friend and the genius of a bank robber who has Oslo enthralled with his daring escapades. While Harry is trying to stay one step ahead and sober he is thrown head first into the superstitious world of gypsies, the murky underworld of weapon smugglers and the dangerous world of bank robbers.
The clues were very obvious so I figured out the main suspect pretty early on but I still really enjoyed this book. It is chockablock with very interesting characters - some new and some old. Nesbo juggles three different story lines expertly and for the first time in the series takes an in depth look at the darker motives and rationale behind human behaviour. I enjoyed this psychological element of the book as well as the continuing battle of wits between Hole and Waaler who we were first introduced to in The Redbreast (the third book in the series).
    Intriguing
A novel that keeps you guessing who the murder is or isn't and the reasoning for it...definitely a must read...but must be read in sequence
    In Which Harry is Gobsmacked
This is Harry at his finest. The book has the usual eclectic mix of characters and settings, this time featuring a wily gypsy bank robber who gets himself into prison when he needs a time out and a look at a small town in Brazil where criminals go to disappear.
The plot is more sophisticated than usual with greater emphasis on puzzles and palindromes and less on gore and mayhem. Also, Rakel and Oleg are off in Russia for a custody battle with Oleg's father, so they are used as pawns to a lesser extent than usual.
I wish I had not read the books in this series out of order. I had difficulty enjoying some of my favorite characters, knowing their ultimate fate.
The British translation gave me some difficulties, too. Some terms could be understood in context. Some remained a mystery to me. And when tough characters would say, "Well, I'll be gobsmacked!" It made me think more of Willy Wonka than of Harry Hole's cast.
    Harry meets the gypsies.
I liked this book and would have given it a 5 star rating, but if found it hard to follow and had to go back and reread a few paragraphs several times to figure out actually where i was. The plot and the twists were wonderful. The person that really pulled of the bank robberies was actually a big surprise. There was a lot of revenge killings, only to discover "oops." wrong person.
Harry was involved where he should not have been and found himself the subject of a police search.

    Publisher's Summary:
On New York's Long Island, in the unpredictable decade of the 1960s, a young boy spends much of his free time in the basement of his family's modest home, where he and his brother, Jim, have created Botch Town, a detailed cardboard replica of their community, complete with figurines representing friends and neighbors. Their little sister, Mary, smokes cigarettes, speaks in other voices, inhabits alternate personas... and, unbeknownst to her siblings, moves around the inanimate clay residents.
There is a strangeness in the air as disappearances, deaths, spectral sightings, and the arrival of a sinister man in a long white car mark this unforgettable shadow year. But strangest of all is the inescapable fact that all these troubling occurrences directly correspond to the changes little Mary has made to the miniature town in their basement.

    Slow, creepy chill!
My favourite listen of the year so far. A Peeping Tom is terrorising a small town, then a small boy goes missing.
Two brothers build a model of the town in their basement and notice that a figurine depicting the Peeping Tom mysteriously moves to the appropriate house each time a sighting is reported. Who is moving the figurine? Who is the Peeping Tom? What happened to the missing boy and why does an ominous white car seem to tail the kids whenever they are out?

    Publisher's Summary:
Unforgiving Years is a thrilling and terrifying journey into the disastrous, blazing core of the 20th century. Victor Serges final novel, here translated into English for the first time, is at once the most ambitious, bleakest, and most lyrical of this neglected major writers works.
The book is arranged into four sections, like the panels of an immense mural or the movements of a symphony. In the first, Agent D, a lifelong revolutionary who has broken with the Communist Party and expects retribution at any moment, flees through the streets of prewar Paris, haunted by the ghosts of his past and his fears for the future. Part two finds D's friend and fellow revolutionary Daria caught up in the defense of a besieged Leningrad, the horrors and heroism of which Serge brings to terrifying life. The third part is set in Germany. On a dangerous assignment behind the lines, Daria finds herself in a city destroyed by both Allied bombing and Nazism, where the populace now confronts the prospect of total defeat. The novel closes in Mexico, in a remote and prodigiously beautiful part of the New World where D and Daria are reunited, hoping that they may at last have escaped the grim reckonings of their modern era.
A visionary novel, a political novel, a novel of adventure, passion, and ideas, of despair and, against all odds, of hope, Unforgiving Years is a rediscovered masterpiece by the author of The Case of Comrade Tulayev.

    READ THIS
Victor Serge was the pen name of Victor Lvovich Kibalchich, born in 1890 in Brussels to impoverished anti-Czarist Russian exiles. After being expelled from Belgium for anarchist activities, he became a journalist in Paris, publishing articles for radical papers before being imprisoned in 1912 on charges of terrorism. He traveled to Spain in 1917 and participated in an attempted syndicalist uprising. By the time he finally arrived in Russia in 1919, Serge had become disenchanted with anarchism and joined the Bolsheviks. At one point, he briefly withdrew to lead a commune on an abandoned estate near Petrograd. After that failed, he went on a 1922 Comintern mission to Germany, which restored his battered pride in Russia's accomplishments. Yet he still had serious issues with the Comintern, and subsequently joined Leon Trotsky's anti-Stalinist United Opposition in 1923, which resulted in his expulsion from the Communist Party and imprisonment in 1928. Upon his release, he published three novels in Paris, only to be arrested again in Russia in 1933. He was allowed to leave in 1936 only after international protests from other prominent radicals. Now living in France, he corresponded with other anti-Stalinists, including Trotsky, and began publishing heated exposés on Stalin's regime. After Germany's invasion in 1940, he fled with his son to Mexico. He wrote two novels during this time, "The Case of Comrade Tulayev" and "Unforgiving Years," as well as "Memoirs of a Revolutionary." His years of imprisonment had damaged his health, however, and the several assassination attempts by Mexican Stalinists didn't exactly help.

    Publisher's Summary:
It is the middle of the 20th century, and in a home economics program at a prominent university, real babies are being used to teach mothering skills to young women. For a young man raised in these unlikely circumstances, finding real love and learning to trust will prove to be the work of a lifetime. In this captivating novel, bestselling author Lisa Grunwald gives us the sweeping tale of an irresistible hero and the many women who love him.
From his earliest days as a practice baby through his adult adventures in 1960s New York City, Disney's Burbank studios, and the delirious world of the Beatles London, Henry remains handsome, charming, universally adored and never entirely accessible to the many women he conquers but can never entirely trust.
Filled with unforgettable characters, settings, and action, The Irresistible Henry House portrays the cultural tumult of the mid-20th century even as it explores the inner tumult of a young man trying to transcend a damaged childhood. For it is not until Henry House comes face-to-face with the real truths of his past that he finds a chance for real love.
    Editorial Reviews:
In 1946, Martha Gaines, program director of home economics at Wilton College, receives her twelfth practice baby, Henry House an orphaned child ready to be raised by students in the course as practice for their future as mothers. Marthas strict and unloving approach to child rearing, based on many of the parenting theories in this pre-Spock era, has no bearing on the fact that she falls deeply in love with little Henry, partly due to her lifes misfortune of losing her own child shortly after it was born. She convinces the dean to let her keep Henry after the two-year time limit and raise him as her own, but Henry quickly proves to be an unemotional little boy, who has trouble returning affections to any one woman. This theme follows him during his lifes journey as hes shipped off to a school for troubled children, becomes a talented lover of women and through his character, exemplifies the 60s sexual revolution. As irresistible as he was as a snuggly infant, he proves to be equally so as a young man and adult.
Oliver Wymans deep voice lends a documentary-like quality to the novel appropriate as the story is based on the true use of practice babies at colleges in the 40s. Wymans slow and methodic story-telling is soothing and his wide range of vocal talents creates believable characters whether hes imitating a womans voice or an infants (his baby cries are surprisingly life-like). His approach is warm and enveloping, making even the coldest of characters (like Martha Gaines) have something likeable about them.
This iconic novel is only enhanced by Wymans narration and is sure to become a favorite in American literature, among the likes of Forrest Gump and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like T.S. Garp, Forrest Gump or Benjamin Button, Henry House, the hero of Grunwalds imaginative take on a little known aspect of American academic life, has an unusual upbringing....Grunwald nails the era just as she ingeniously uses Henry and the women in his life to illuminate the heady rush of sexual freedom (and confusion) that signified mid-century life." (Publishers Weekly)
    "Irresistible." (Kathleen Daly, Newark Star-Ledger)
"The Irresistible Henry House is a soaring, heartfelt novel that spans three decades and an entire continent.

    Publisher's Summary:
The novel opens in England in 1915, at the deathbed of Dorothy Townsend, a suffragist and one of the first women to integrate Cambridge University. Her decision to starve herself for the cause informs and echoes in the later, overlapping narratives of her descendants. Among them are her daughter Evie, who becomes a professor of chemistry at Barnard College in the middle of the century and never marries, and her granddaughter Dorothy Townsend Barrett, who focuses her grief over the loss of her son by repeatedly defying the ban on photographing the bodies of dead soldiers returned to Dover Air Force base from Iraq. The contemporary chapters chronicle Dorothy Barrett's girls, both young professionals embarrassed by their mother's activism and baffled when she leaves their father after 50 years of marriage.
Walbert deftly explores the ways in which successive generations of women have attempted to articulate what the 19th century called "the woman question". Her novel is a moving reflection on the tides of history, and how the lives of our great-grandmothers resonate in our own.
    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
this bibliophile could not finish this book
I had such high hopes for this book. I love reading historical fiction, especially works about colonialism and Asia, so I jumped at the chance to listen a novel about the Korean War. But I became frustrated by the tired tropes of the novel, the melodramatic tone of the narrator, and the unsympathetic characters and unrealistic plot. I was about two hours from the end of the book, when the tension should have been building to a climax, when I made the decision to stop listening. I rarely abandon books, especially when I'm so far from the end, but I had stopped caring about what happened to the characters and it was a painful listen. The narrator sounded like he was narrating crime fiction, which didn't help my opinion of the book.
Engrossing Portrayal of the Effect of War
This book and the narrator are terrific despite the brutality of the content. Although I am familiar with the history of the conflicts between Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese in the 20th century and America's role in this complex part of the world, this fictional story vividly portrays the effect of war on civilians. I don't think that the average American reader has any idea how World War II and the Korean War affected people in those countries and how these effects continue to shape immigrants 50 years later. Chang- Rae Lee's prose is stunning, particularly in an audio book format. This is one of my favorites from Audible
Save yourself the trouble, a total disappointment
This makes me sad to write since I've met the author, Chang-rae Lee, a man who couldn't have been more kind and charming or humble. But his book, The Surrendered, is simply awful. Firstly, the book desperately needs a team of editors to steer Lee back to its myriad flaws needing repair. It's missing many details essential to the story, pieces which are astonishingly left out. I've never listened to or read a book in which so many words are just made up, nouns and verbs turned into adjectives and adverbs seemingly out of convenience to the author. And the reuse of the same words over and over--he must have used "welling" in 10 different ways 30 different times.
The story line is unbelievable, even for historical, wartime fiction, and I'm not talking about the brutality of the combatants. There's not a single happy character in the lot, and the one who comes closest is a drug addict. As one other reviewer put it, Lee's use of tropes is just nauseating. I can't tell if he's trying too hard to impress readers or himself by twisting every description into something symbolic and deep, or whether he just can't make himself write cleanly and concisely.
The narrator needs to find a new line of work. He was just not good in any way, shape or form. I know that sounds mean, but it's the truth, I'm sorry to say.
To think that this book is up for a Pulitzer Prize is purely astonishing.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Persian folklore, Syngue Sabour is a magical stone, a patience stone, that absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. But here, the Syngue Sabour is not a stone, but a man lying brain-dead. His wife sits by his side, resenting him for not resisting the call to arms, for wanting to be a hero, and in the end, for being incapacitated.
Yet she cares, speaking to him, revealing her deepest desires, pains, and secrets. She speaks of her life, not knowing if her husband hears, confessing about sex and love and her anger against a man who never understood her, and who mistreated her. Free of oppression, she leads her story up to a great secret that is unthinkable in a country like Afghanistan. Rahimi captures with great courage and spare, poetic, prose the reality of everyday life for an intelligent woman under the oppressive weight of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
    Critic Reviews:
Rahimi's lyric prose is simple and poetic, and McLean's translation is superb. With an introduction by Khaled Hosseini, this Prix Goncourt-winning book should have a profound impact on the literature of Afghanistan for its brave portrayal of, among other things, an Afghan woman as a sexual being. (Library Journal)
The Patience Stone is perfectly written: spare, close to the bone, sometimes bloody, with a constant echo, like a single mistake that repeats itself over and over and over. (Los Angeles Times)

    Interesting though not fascinating
What did you like best about The Patience Stone? What did you like least?
It is a very interesting book, as far as the way to tell the condition of Muslim women in some countries live in. Horrible! In this sense the book is good and valuable. It is very informative. It uses very unusual form of telling the story. Whereas I do not regret reading it, it is not a book that will catch your attention. It is mostly...sad, and depressing. But it is, as I believe, reflecting the truth... That is why I think it is valuable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Patience Stone?
    all of it
Have you listened to any of Carolyn Seymours other performances before? How does this one compare?

Did The Patience Stone inspire you to do anything?
