    Publisher's Summary:
The story follows the struggles of a woman who must choose between freedom and love. The story is told in a sultry, passionate, and intelligent voice. La Vagabonde contains all that is best in Colette: wisdom, vitality, and her astute observations on art, pleasure, and love.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ward presents the controlled, but deep, emotion of this woman struggling to release the pain and frustration of an abusive first marriage and to enjoy the almost painfully awkward ardor of her suitor." (AudioFile)

    Vapid Characters
The beautiful writing was offset by the disdainful and boring characters. The story goes almost nowhere; perhaps that's the point that I missed.
The performance of the reader is good and her voice is melodic.

    Un tipo de romanticismo diferente
    Any additional comments?
Aunque es una novela romántica, es superior a muchas historias del género en la actualidad. "Cumbres Borrascosas" es un clásico de la literatura por muy buenos motivos.
    Me encantó

  • Fathers and Sons Audiobook by Ivan Turgenev

    Title: Fathers and Sons
    Author: Ivan Turgenev
    Narrator: George Guidall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 54 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
When Ivan Turgenev first published this novel in 1862, the populace of his native Russia was so enraged by the character of Bazarov that Turgenev was forced to flee the country for France. However, critics have praised the novel for its subtle irony and richly crafted characters.
    Editorial Reviews:
The latter half of the nineteenth century was a time of turmoil in Russian politics and society. As modernization and industrialization took place, the new generation challenged traditional society. Against this backdrop Turgenev presents a generational conflict through a cast of richly crafted characters and delicate prose. The narrator does not give his characters assertive voices, but portrays them thoughtfully, especially the extraordinary protagonist, Bazarov. Little is needed to convey the chilling intellect and compassionate heart of this complex character. This novel about life and relationships will evoke a thoughtful mood in the listener.
    Critic Reviews:
"The deep purpose pervading Fathers and Sons is to show us life itself." (Henry James)
    Members Reviews:
    Russian Classic
Fathers and Sons has been hailed as a masterpiece of Russian literature, but I knew nothing about it before picking it up. I was certainly impressed.
The book centers around Yevgeny Bazarov, a young radical who embraces the idea of nihilism. Bazarov rejects the old conventions of the past (religion, aristocracism, liberalism, essentially all -isms) and believes that life is meaningless. During his travels with his friend, Arkady Kirsanov, he discusses and argues his beliefs with both parents and other characters. Despite his insistence that nothing in life has any meaning, Bazarov is a caring, loving man.
What happens in the plot is of little importance compared to the progression of Bazarov and his beliefs over the course of the novel. The novels ending comes suddenly, but is not surprising.
What is more crucial to the novels success is the way it captures the essence of peoples relationships and feelings through Turganevs recounting of events. One always can tell where people stand in their opinions of each other simply by their basic actions.
I was fascinated that in Bazarov,I could see feelings about tzars and social class in general which was reminiscent of the impending Soviet Communist Revolution. I also saw overtones of modern existentialism in a 19th century novel.
George Guidall does a wonderful job, and is easy to follow. Like many Russian novels, however, Fathers and Sons can be somewhat wordy and complex. I am not sure if the English translations are to blame or if the style of Russian writing is simply not what Americans are used to. Nonetheless, Fathers and Sons is a classic and should not be missed.
The Clash Between Liberals and Nihilists
Would you listen to Fathers and Sons again? Why?
Probably. It was a good listen and an important novel but I would probably wait at least ten years to revisit it.
What other book might you compare Fathers and Sons to and why?
I think it could be comparable to works his contemporaries.
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
    I'm not sure.

    Title: Silent House
Author: Orhan Pamuk, Robert Finn (translator)
Narrator: Emrhys Cooper, Jonathan Cowley, John Lee, Juliet Mills, Steve West
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-09-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 32 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Never before published in English, Orhan Pamuk's second novel is the story of a Turkish family gathering in the shadow of the impending military coup of 1980.
In an old mansion in Cennethisar, a former fishing village near Istanbul, a widow, Fatma, awaits the annual summer visit of her grandchildren. She has lived in the village for decades, ever since her husband, an idealistic young doctor, ran afoul of the sultan's grand vizier and arrived to serve the poor fishermen. Now mostly bedridden, she is attended by her constant servant Recep, a dwarf - and the doctor's illegitimate son. Despite mutual dependency, there is no love lost between mistress and servant, who have very different recollections - and grievances - from the early years, before Cennethisar grew into a high-class resort surrounding the family house, now in shambles.
Though eagerly anticipated, Fatma's grandchildren bring little consolation. The eldest, Faruk, a dissipated historian, wallows in alcohol as he laments his inability to tell the story of the past from the kaleidoscopic pieces he finds in the local archive; his sensitive leftist sister, Nilgün, has yet to discover the real-life consequences of highminded politics; and Metin, a high school nerd, tries to keep up with the lifestyle of his spoiled society schoolmates while he fantasizes about going to America - an unaffordable dream unless he can persuade his grandmother to tear down her house.
But it is Recep's nephew Hasan, a high school dropout, lately fallen in with right-wing nationalists, who will draw the visiting family into the growing political cataclysm issuing from Turkey's tumultuous century-long struggle for modernity.
By turns deeply moving, hilarious, and terrifying, Silent House pulses with the special energy of a great writer's early work even as it offers beguiling evidence of the mature genius for which Orhan Pamuk would later be celebrated the world over.
    Members Reviews:
Don't bother, do try one of Pamuk's other books.
If you are looking for an interesting novel set in Istanbul or nearby, Pamuk is the author for you - but "Silent House" is not the book. Try almost any of his other books. I've been a huge fan of Pamuk's writing since I read "My Name is Red". Then I devoured and thoroughly enjoyed "Snow", "Istanbul" and "A Strangeness in My Mind". I thought I'd love ALL of his books, but I was wrong. The story in "Silent House" was so boring that after a while I just didn't care where it was going. I couldn't even make myself finish it, and that is very unusual for me. It was hard for me to commit to another of his books after that, but I did, and am glad I did, as I am now thoroughly enjoying "The Red-Haired Woman". He can craft amazingly complex stories with fascinating details and subtle undercurrents, it just didn't work in "Silent House".

    Members Reviews:
    disappointing
After reading "The History of Love", I keep diving into other Nicole Krauss novels hoping for something that even comes close to that brilliant piece of writing but unfortunately finding that my disappointment gets greater each time.
    Great story idea, poor execution
Would you try another book from Nicole Krauss and/or Richard Poe?
I absolutely loved The History of Love, Nicole Krauss' later novel. It was so beautifully written, poetic, touching, interesting. This book, however, is a huge disappointment. The writing is juvenile, awkward, and forced. The plot line and characters are weak. And the narrator does a very poor job, especially with dialogue. His voice is breathy and trails off at the end of each sentence. He is overly dramatic. His style reminds me of a 1950's radio show narration.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The redeeming quality of this novel is simply that it's based around a fantastic concept, which should be a seed for a well cultivated story, but rather it's left to dry out and disappoint.
    Any additional comments?
    Waste of a credit.
    Disappointed--really wanted to care
What would have made Man Walks Into a Room better?
The story's main problem is that it never managed to convince me why I should care. Care for the story or the characters. I found myself screaming at the ceiling of my car while listening ("Are you serious?!!" or "You've got to be joking?!!") in disbelieve at how bored I was at times or at how irrelevant things seemed.
What could Nicole Krauss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The writer seemed unaware or not yet able to image what a reader needs to stay interested or connected to her characters and to the story. I absolutely LOVED (LOVED!!!!) The History of Love. Seems like she's grown tremendously as a writer to be able to pull off History but fail so utterly in her first attempt.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Man Walks Into a Room?
The final chapter!!! Did not understand why Krauss thought I would be interested in that. Really odd and out of touch choice.

Begun in the 1980s and worked on until the author's death, in 2003, Woes of the True Policeman is Roberto Bolaño's last, unfinished novel. The novel follows Oscar Amalfitano - an exiled Chilean university professor and widower - through the maze of his revolutionary past, his relationship with his teenage daughter, Rosa, his passion for a former student, and his retreat from scandal in Barcelona. Forced to leave Barcelona for Santa Teresa, a Mexican city close to the U.S. border where women are being killed in unprecedented numbers, Amalfitano soon begins an affair with Castillo, a young forger of Larry Rivers paintings. Outtakes maybe, but not very funny
I loved 2666 and didn't want it to end, so naturally I chose this book, recently published posthumously. Some of the characters had the same names as those in 2666, The works of fictional author Archimbaldi showed up--in fact there is a list of his complete works. What's wrong with this, I asked myself? Why am I falling asleep? Why don't I care about these people? This novel lacks the sparkle and polish of Bolano's other works. It lacks humor. I often felt like these were scenes he had tried out for 2666 and then discarded in favor of more interesting ones. t was interested, and I finished it, mainly as a window into Bolano's process and style.
That said, there is a beautiful and touching series of letters near the end of the novel that were worth staying for.
I could not sort out if the narration was a problem or not. It was easy enough to follow.
If you haven't read Roberto Bolano yet, try the Savage Detectives or 2666.
Like a window into the soul of the bolaño-verse.
This elucidates so much of what is often unsaid in the narratives of 2666 and Savage Detectives. As its own piece, a rumination, we see into Bolaño's mind and it is glorious to see, as if happening contemporaneously with our reading this book is Bolaño's persistent formulation of these characters and themes.

    Title: Oblivion
    Author: Sergei Lebedev
    Narrator: Daniel Gamburg

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-01-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
This masterful novel represents an epic literary attempt to examine a very troubled Russia.
In one of the first 21st-century Russian novels to probe the legacy of the Soviet prison-camp system, a young man travels to the vast wastelands of the Far North to uncover the truth about a shadowy neighbor who saved his life and whom he knows only as Grandfather II. What he finds, among the forgotten mines and decrepit barracks of former gulags, is a world relegated to oblivion, where it is easier to ignore both the victims and the executioners than to come to terms with a terrible past.
This disturbing tale evokes the great and ruined beauty of a land where man and machine worked in tandem with nature to destroy millions of lives during the Soviet century. Emerging from today's Russia, where the ills of the past are being forcefully erased from public memory, this masterful novel represents an epic literary attempt to rescue history from the brink of oblivion.

    Breathtaking Prose but Little Action
If you're looking for a book where things are go-go-go and things get done, stop reading this review, and start looking for a different book 'cause, trust me, "Oblivion," by Sergei Lebedev ain't that kind of a book at all. If you want to come away from a book absolutely haunted by some, well, 'gorgeous' seems like the wrong word for prose like this, but 'gaunt' doesn't cut it either... just listen to this book, maybe the term will come to you.
Not a lot happens here. Horrors of the Soviet century are revisited: gulags, uranium mining camps, forced labor camps, the bread lines, the people snatched up at train stations, destined to become prisoners, all are addressed by the young man (we know him only through our own eyes, in first person, tho' there are jumps into second person for bouts of urgency) through dreams, images, then direct memories of the people he encounters as he tries to learn who Grandfather II was.
The sentences of metaphors and similes are unique, dynamic. The metaphoric imagery is grand, broad, sweeping, and brilliant. Everything is in the details, details, details here. I can't begin to tell you that, however simple the "story" may seem, it's brilliant in how the details are conveyed and expanded on. You FEEL everything. You FEEL gaunt, starvation, fear, violation, the simple pleasure of a cool breeze on your face, or of the soldier passing you by.
There are stories that are magnificent and brutal treasures: that of the child raised by one of the founders of a mining camp who receives a whistle. He knows nothing but the camp, and as such, has never heard a bird, knows nothing of air but for breathing. The whistle brings him, >gasp< imagination, something that could be ruinous in such a state.
Seriously, the stories are extraordinary. This is not a sit down, cover-to-cover listen. You'll want to chew and savor, bit by bit. It's worth every little word.
My only quibble, and perhaps I'm being most ungenerous, is with the narration. Gamburg does a perfectly fine job, but given the caliber of the writing, given the excellence of the translation, my expectations for the delivery were much higher than what was given. I expected much, much more in the way of emotion. Nothing histrionic, certainly not, just not so very subdued.
