Sehr interessant, was Herta Müller von ihrer Kindheit erzählt. Viele interessante Details über Rumäniendeutsche und ihr Land und Leben.

Auch faszinierend, wie sie das alles eloquent in Worte fassen kann. Ihre Kindheitserinnerungen, Gefühle und Gedanken. Manches kann man auch in ihren Romanen wiederfinden, aber diese persönliche Erzählung gibt Hintergründe und erklärt vieles. Fh

Gretel's life and relationships make engaging reading. Alice Hoffman writes stories that seem real and that speak to my teenager students.

Beautifully narrated, but with a thin story, unusual for Alice Hoffman, whom I read for her astounding originality and whimsy...but still a good read

One of my favorite A Hoffman novels. Short, but delicious.

A great beach read!

It is always a pleasure to read a good book. Alice Hoffman is a literary "witch" who weaves a little magic into each of her novels. Although this is not one of her best novels (try TURTLE MOON or HERE ON EARTH)---it's really a little too short to explore any of the character's psyche or motivations---Ms. Hoffman has given the reader another pager turner full of glorious prose. She makes ordinary life extraordinary in each of her novels, and she has fast become my favorite author.

GREAT BOOK

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ravelstein?

This is the second time I read Ravelstein, well, this time was listening. It's just a great book.

Have you listened to any of Peter Ganims other performances before? How does this one compare?

NO, FIRST TIME

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO

Essentially a true story.

What did you like most about Ravelstein?

The fact that it was about two real people. One being the author.

This book lead me on to get Prof Allan Bloom's book 'The closing of the American mind' here on Audible. And that book lead me on to many more audiobooks, firstly, 'Democracy in America' (1840) by Alexis de Toquville, then Will Durant's fantastic 'The Story of Philosophy' after that, book after book almost automatically suggested itself since they were cited in the three books above.

What about Peter Ganims performance did you like?

His performance of the main characters sound very like Saul Bellow and Allan Bloom. His reading in general is very good.

Ravelstein is Saul Bellow's final novel. Published in 2000, when Bellow was eighty-five years old, it received widespread critical acclaim. It tells the tale of a friendship between two university professors and the complications that animate their erotic and intellectual attachments in the face of impending death. The novel is a roman à clef, written in memoir-form. The narrator is in Paris with Abe Ravelstein, a renowned professor, and Nikki, his lover. Ravelstein asks him to write a memoir about him after he dies, because he has AIDS. After his death, the narrator and his wife go on holiday to the Caribbean. The narrator catches a tropical disease and flies back to the United States in convalescence. Eventually, on recuperation, he decides to write the memoir.The title character, Ravelstein, is based on the philosopher Allan Bloom, who taught alongside Bellow at the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought. Remembering Bloom in an interview, Bellow said, "Allan inhaled books and ideas the way the rest of us breathe air...

Well over rated

This is a Booker Prize winner. It must have been a very slow year! Books out of India seem to be all the rage amongst the English intelligensia that choose competition winners. This book doesn't make the cut. For something really good in this genre try " A Fine Balance " by Rohinton Mistry. It didn't win the Booker, but should have!!!

Story Telling and Narrative style keeps the tempo

The story is captivating, while the Narrator's tyle and personifaction of character kept me a nice tempo in the audiobook.

Words, As Well as People and Places, Evolve Over Time

One of the most famous watering holes in Austin, Texas, where legislators, lobbiests, government officials, businessmen, and university students hung out, was a gay, happening place that attracted all comers. Into this beer-infused environment, came much of the "bidness" of government and other fascinating transactions. Billy Lee Brammer, author of The Gay Place, definitely knew where the bodies were buried, and for reasons all his own, he decided to reveal a lot of it here. Austinites, who sat up night after night, matching information from the novel with assorted colorful, non-fictional characters, were intrigued with backstories that gave legs to whispered rumors. Over time, many changes have occurred, not only with the characters and places themselves, but also with the words used to describe them. A sneak peek into the colorful citizens of a smallish Texas town on the cusp of exploding into a sophisticated city, this three-books-in-one novel is a fun read for those who have moved in later and heard the stories.

Brammer's Masterpiece

Billy Lee Brammer's THE GAY PLACE deserves its acclaim as one of the great political novels. Brammer beautifully--and that really is the right word to describe Brammer's ear for dialogue--recreates the political world of 1950s Texas of which LBJ was the undisputed king. Governor Arthur Genstemaker is pure LBJ, so much so that one gets the sense that this novel was must reading for Robert Caro when Caro set out to write the definitive biography of the one time president. What is also obvious with the book is how much politics is not a happy place, that the lives of the participants are empty, that relationships are ruined, and that alocohalism and unfaithfulness are givens.

It is anything but a gay place.

Why not then a five star review given the praise above? The three pieced together extended stories--"The Flea Circus," "Room Enough to Caper," and "Country Pleasures"--really should have been novels each on their own. In extending each, Brammer would have been able to work through some of his pacing issues and also the conclusion to "Room Enough to Caper."

Disappointing

I read this because in a recent interview Larry McMurtry said it was one of the two best books about Texas, the other being one of his. I've enjoyed three or four of his novels and I like Texas so that was good enough for me. Mistake. The writing was good, description, narration and characterization, but there's really no plot.
