    Second wonderful book!!!
As I wrote in the review for Paradise Valley, this second book is just as good. Make sure you listen to them in the proper order. If you like Amish stories, this is one of the better books to listen to.
    1920s Amish Community in Mexico
Historically accurate fictional tale of Amish families who moved from Ohio, fleeing the government mandated public schooling of their children in the 1920s to Mexico . . . the land, prime farmland, warm and wildly beautiful, yields good crops for the Amish . . . but increasing threats from the Mexican bandits make daily life more and more difficult . . . the Bender family continues to grow, with young Rachel's skills as a midwife becoming renowned in the tight knit community . . . Miriam smitten with Domingo, local native and hired hand, learns that "Cualnezqui", (the special name that Domingo has for Miriam) means Beautiful One . . . not friend, as Domingo had told her . . . and when she confronts him with it, he tells her that there are "fences" between them . . . he works for her father, he is poor, and most of all, he is not a pacifist, he is not Amish . . . When Aaron, (one of the Bender sons), Rachel, Ada, and little Amos have to travel to the doctor in Agua Nueva due to contracting diphtheria, on their way home, they are they are attacked by El Pantera and his bandits . . . The Captive Heart is a beautifully and sensitively written story of the struggles and contrasts between two ways of life, two belief systems, the reckoning of a man who meets with His God, and the Grace of a mighty Savior . . . the narration is superb, it resonates deep into one's soul as the words flow, the Daughters of Caleb Bender, a fictional series, is written by the descendant of one of the actual Amish who left Ohio and moved to Mexico in the 1920s . . . I look forward to Book 3 . . .
    Disappointing
I guess I am so used to Beverly that I can not stand anyone who just has a lot of things happen to the characters to try to cause suspense and interest. This book was Ho hum for me. At least it was not full of cussing which so many think makes it interesting.

    Wonderfully written and read!
When emotions are the part of the story and some think they are above the law you get a whole lot of different thought processes going on. An awesome inspirational mystery and journey through a Prosecutor's office. Randy Singer has written another super story. Tavia Gilbert is the perfect Narrator for this book.

Good book, a little rough around the edges
If you could sum up Protection for Hire in three words, what would they be?
    Fun, exciting, engaging
Have you listened to any of Emily Durantes other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but she does a good job. Even gets down the accents. The mother is my favorite.
Who was the most memorable character of Protection for Hire and why?
The main character, Tessa, is well written. She is interesting, intriguing and conflicted. She comes off as a rounded character.
    Any additional comments?
I very much liked the story line. It is new and interesting. I especially liked that the romance takes a backseat to the main adventure of the story. Tessa is a character that is lovable in spite of her mistakes and inspiring to watch while she tries to make amends for her bad choices in the past.
    Give us More Camy Tang
What did you love best about Protection for Hire?
I love reading her books as they are like the joy luck club letting us understand the Asian American world.
What did you like best about this story?
The character is a martial artist, once part of the Japanese yakuza, but now a Christian.
Have you listened to any of Emily Durantes other performances before? How does this one compare?
I am wondering if I am odd on this one, as the read was flowing and easy to listen to, but she was not Asian, or I could not hear it if she was. I felt like I was watching an old western where the Indians were Italian.
If you could rename Protection for Hire, what would you call it?
Thank you God for Christian writers who can write. No embarrassing points in the books that you will have to mute for kids.
    Any additional comments?
I want more Camy Tang audio books as her books are great.
    want more like this
Everything was great!! good clean story with humor to go with it! Hope there's more to come!!
    Nice
Tessa is a good character with enough past to keep her interesting. Story was flowing and enjoyable. A little romance but nothing graphic, which was enjoyable.
The narrator did a fine job.
    Overall worth a credit.

really cool perspective on this story
I really enjoyed a fresh perspective into this age old tale... It is amazing to think that this took place in history.
    Attempt
I found the story boring, torn and cobbled back together. An attemp to tell a story of love, faith and brutality, but badly done and boring.
    Time and money wasted.

To deliver the message, Morgan will have to restore his wavering faith and survive the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

This book is a buried treasure!
I read so many books--4-5 a week--and rarely take time to write a review, but I must let others know what a find this book is. The characterization is phenomenal and the story riveting. Morgan Fairchild, named for his great uncle J. Pierpont Morgan, is the main character. Born to wealth, he is determined to make his own way and is responsible almost to a fault. His strong sense of honor has cost him the love of his life, now engaged to another man...ackwardly, they are all on the Titanic. I can't even begin to get into the mystery involved, and all the plot intricacies. I have not enjoyed a book this much in a very long time. It has every element one could want. Now I'm off to start its sequel, Voices from the Titanic!
Outstanding combination of historical fact and fiction
I have read with varying degrees of interest several of Jim Walker's other historical mystery novels. But nothing, IMHO, compares to "Murder on the Titanic". The story weaves a completely fictitious -- but oddly believable -- murder mystery into one of the most well-known tragedies in recent history. While the major characters of the mystery are creations of Walker's own mind, I was amazed at the incredible number of actual historical figures who played significant roles in the book. I'm sure that, were they alive today, they would refute the story that Walker tells -- but that's the entire point, isn't it? This is a work of fiction -- and no more and no less than Shakespeare's telling of the story of Julius Caesar. The conversations and actions in that play are as fictitious as what Walker has created -- but we accept Shakespeare completely.
As to other reviews that downplay the "accuracy" of the historical elements of the story, I feel that the reviewers should do a bit more homework. If they would do so, they would realize that there are a LOT of different (and often conflicting) stories of what actually happened on the Titanic, who was involved, what the key people were like, etc. I simply accept that; I don't try to argue it. As far as I'm concerned, the characters have every probability of being as Walker describes them, as anything else. And accepting that as a foundational point to reading the story makes it so much more enjoyable.
Even though the story was over 450 pages long, I wanted it to go on and on! I'm so glad that Walker decided to continue the story in "Voices from the Titanic". This man is truly talented -- and also shows (just as an aside) that a good story can be written without resorting to debased language, or overt sexual themes, as seems to be the trend lately.
    Great book!
Great book! Love the sequel too. Author does his research on the Titanic.
    Not happy
I'm pretty careful with my books. This one arrived with part of the binding chipped out of the spine.

    A Slow Pleasant Listen
I almost returned this audiobook. But the main couple in it caught my attention. There are three couples in this book. I think Ms. Gray might do this routinely, as the last book I listened to also had more than one love story going on. When I re-listened to the first part of the story I was able to follow it (I couldn't initially, with the various stories going on.) This is a pleasant, gentle, listen and there's much to be said for that, especially at Christmastime.
    Annoying PA Dutch/Mennonite dialog
What disappointed you about Christmas in Sugarcreek?
PA Dutch/Mennonite subject matter should have been mentioned in description.
Would you ever listen to anything by Shelley Shepard Gray again?
    Not likely.
What didn???t you like about Robynn Rodriguez???s performance?
    See above.
You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Wouldn't know, stopped reading- do not like being deceived by authors with religious agendas. My bible reading is entirely separate from recreational reading.

makes me want to read the next one
The story was good, the characters were believable. It wasn't on the edge of your seat drama, but I have to say I enjoyed this listen very much. I always enjoy Tavia as a narrator. I will be getting the next book in the series and will be looking for more from this author. I liked the cliff hanger ending.
    Like Regurgitated Steak
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The listening experience was 5 stars, it was the horrific writing that gained my one-star rating.
Would you ever listen to anything by Brandilyn Collins and Amberly Collins again?
Maybe, and only because Tavia Gilbert narrates the next two in this series.
What about Tavia Gilbert???s performance did you like?
Audiobook narration was brilliant, as always with Tavia Gilbert (and the reason I bought this from audible in the first place), but the story was like a regurgitated piece of steak. Tavia saved this book. Thank His Noodly Appendage for that!
You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    7) The only real praise I have for the actual writing of the book was from the killer's perspective. Only in small doses though. After about the third time of reading something in his POV, I was going,
    Any additional comments?
I'll just make a quick list of things that immediately stand out to me.
    1) A character is killed at the beginning of the book (Tom), which is fine and all, but the main character, Shaley, is in a state of grief and sadness throughout the novel, though we have absolutely no connection with the dude who was murdered. I'd say about three minutes was spent on Tom's character before he was whacked off. There wasn't even any substantial flashbacks to show Tom's and Shaley's friendship as the investigation unfolds (unless you count her remembering him shaking a hand). So instead of sympathizing with Shaley, I wanted to rip her arms off and beat her (or myself) with them. Which brings me to . . .
    2) As much as Shaley is saddened and cries over the above character, she goes shopping the next day with her bff for fun. This was a WTF? moment. If you've lost a close friend, you understand that the last thing you feel like doing is

    Members Reviews:
    Not For Me
This is clearly a case of most author's ought not attempt reading their own books syndrome for me. The narration here is so loud, forceful and rapid fire that I felt like a machine gun was rattling away. No matter how much I lowered the volume it still felt too much. What's more the content got lost in this narration. There was no inflection, modulation, tone or pacing in this christmas story. Instead it was full steam ahead--so much so that almost everyone sounded angry?? I am fine with narrators that just read the book--not acting out characters--but this was over the top. The audio production team should have picked this up and fixed it. Do listen to the sample first.
    Life Loved and Lived
Set in a little town in Virginia in the fifties, O Little Town is a wonderful Christmas story of faith, family and life . . . the real kind that comes at us, where teenage girls get pregnant, people get on your nerves, yes, even back in the fifties . . . written and read by Don Reid of the Statler Brothers, it took me a bit to get used to the rhythm of his voice and the telling of the story, which is different than other audio books, more like a fireside tale . . . I loved the honesty and spirit of the people depicted in the town of Mt. Jefferson, the preacher and his family, the doctor's family, police officer, Bobby Briggs's whose daughter is pregnant . . . and one of the best parts is that these precious folks DEALT with it . . . loved one another through all the illnesses, crises, quirks, insecurities, and doubts that came their way . . . with a deep inner strength that seems to have evaporated these days . . . with little question that they would come together as families and community . . . and without undue drama . . . gathering at church . . . and forgiving one another and themselves . . . great listen . . .
