OH Dear, She Needs Help

The book is a fun "read" and was an enjoyable interlude but someone needs to tell this author she cannot read! Perhaps she is trying to save money by recording her own books but she just makes a mess of them. I had purchased one of her books prior to this and decided to try once more in hopes she had improved. No such luck. Not only is her voice not that pleasing but her inflection and emphasis is awful. Everything is always at an excited, breath taking pitch even when she is writing in the third person.

I have purchased my last audio book recorded by Ms Clark until she has someone else read them. Too bad, it was a fun book but I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Zapped

While I enjoyed the story very much, I was very disappointed in the reader. The author should stick to writing and leave the reading to those who do it best. I had difficulty following which character was doing the talking due to Ms. Higgins Clark's inability to change her voice to distinguish between characters. I would rate the story as a four and the reader as a two.

Almost Terrible

I think I expected more since the authors name was "Higgins Clark". My assumption was that this would be a sure winner. I was wrong. I am not a writer, but I'll try to give a couple words I can use to describe this book: Amateurish and/or Immature. The story meandered around without any real character development. I guess the author thought that having a million players in this book would be interesting enough. I found it strange that all these people kept winding up tied to each other in some inconsequential way. No one was very interesting either. The story could have been better though if a real narrator had been used. Instead, the author read herself, and in a manner that one would read a story to a child or friend. Very little voice change, unless the character was excited about something, then the voice became a high pitch squeal. I guess this was acting or dramatization? It did not work for me.

It was not bad enough for me to quit in the middle and not find out how it all ended. I bought the download at a very low sales price, and am really happy I did not waste one of my credits on this one!

Not a good narrator!

I don't normally write reviews as what I like/dislike may not be the same for someone else, but I have to agree with the other reviewers that Carol Higgins Clark should stick to what she does best, writing, and leave the narrating to those that do it well.

I enjoy almost all of Robert B Parker's books, I enjoy Joe Mantegna's narration and the 'saids' are just a part of Parker's writing style that I've grown to love. Thoroughly enjoyed the story, the characters and the narration.

A wonderful listen!

I guess I am really hooked on Spencer now - I generally like audio books that are a little longer than Robert Parker's seem to be but I thoroughly enjoy listening to them and do so at every opportunity until I finish. No one but Joe Montegna should ever read the Spencer series! He is just perfect and it is him I see when I listen to Spencer's voice during the book - to me he is what Spencer looks like and no one else can do the character or Parker's dry humour and irony justice. The others who have narrated some of the Spencer series are very good but not for these books - Joe Montegna IS Spencer and anyone else sounds wrong. All the Robert Parker books are well crafted and written, extremely engaging and enjoyable and well worth the price. I am off to buy a couple more. What will I do when I have finished them all??

It was better then

Once one of my favorite authors, Mr Parker has taken to writing novellas, having them published in large print with huge margins and calling them novels. This is the first Spenser novel I have heard as an audio book and it is obvious that Mr Parker's terse style along with his frequent "he said", "she added", "Pearl growled" doesn't transfer well to the spoken book.

Mr Mantenga is a competent actor but I never saw him as Spenser. When speaking Hawk's parts I was embarrassed for him and the character. When Avery Brooks played Hawk on the first Spenser series he played Hawk as an intelligent, multi-faceted person. It didn't sound that way with this narrator.

Mr Parker's "Early Autumn" was a wonderful book with interesting characters (and to his credit including a guidance counselor) and a very interesting protagonist. Please go back to the source, Mr Parker, even Hawk was boring in this book.

Another excellent book by L Block..The plot is intriguing and the characters captivating . With Matt Scudder's stories, Lawrence Block follows the tradition of the best , hard-boiled detective books : a pleasure not to miss !

Can you say boring....

I was catapulted into boredom with this book. The narrative was too detailed and the reader was monotone. I went to other books twice before I could finish this one. Sorry!

Long and entertaining, even if fkawed

This wasn't my favorite Scudder; A Long Line of Dead Men was a hard act to follow. But that didn't warrant a full star off. 4.5 would have been about right. There were lot of storylines to keep the reader occupied, and hence value for the buck, even if it didn't always cohere perfectly.

The primary story line was too easy to guess, but the book was only 1/3 over when it was resolved. Block still had other fish to fry. Some of what followed felt like different stories altogether, but that's OK.

Mark Hammer did his usual, droll good job of narration.

Great Storytelling

Big Matthew Scudder fan and this one did not disappoint. Riveting and could not stop listening.

A Virtuoso Performance!

Few if any writers of popular crime fiction today are as adept with the English language as James Lee Burke. Whether he's describing personal dysfunction, the sounds and smells of Cajun country, the philosophy of violence or the irrestible characters who move through his Dave Robicheaux stories, Burke is the master. But he not only knows how to string words together: he also spins a tale that holds your interest tightly until he finally turns you loose at the very end, when the person you don't think did it, turns out to be the one who did. Of course, Burke writes the same novel over and over: Dave and Clete and the wonderfully conceived character of Sheriff Helen Soileau, confronting the evil rich people and crooked officials around New Iberia, Louisiana. This novel is no exception. However, this familiar Burke plot is one that we his fans have come to know and feel comfortable with. In this book, Dave and Clete are getting up in age and are starting to mellow -- just a little. In other words, they're starting to grow up. But lest you think this spells tedium for the reader, think again. Burke manages to keep the fuses lit and there is enough righteous and often violent retribution to keep his fans satisfied. Hurricane Katrina

I almost gave it four stars because the writing was a little inconsistent. I decided on 5 stars because of the information about Katrina. The Katrina bit was interesting, heartbreaking, and non-political.

Terrible

This book doesn't even merit one star. I've read all Patricia Cornwell's books. She is one of my favorite authors. It's hard to believe that she actually wrote this book. I had to check to make sure I hadn't downloaded some abridged version. The plot is weak and confusing, character development is poor, and the ending is abrupt to say the least.

At Risk Disappointed

Having been a fan of Patricia Cornwell for years, I was most disappointed in her newest novel, "At Risk". It was not nearly as suspenseful nor was the plot as exciting as her usual work. Bring back Scarpetta!

She ain't what she used to be

Once my favoriate author, Cornwell should take a break and try to recapture her old style. Granted, this is an improvement over her most recent works but I miss the old writing style...But her first couple books are still her best works...

Not worth the listen

I am an avid Cornwell fan and would recommend most of her other books, but not this one.

It's downright boring and didn't hold my attention. The story line is very weak and it was difficult at times to follow along. I kept thinking that I must have gotten the abridged version. It seemed to skip ahead and then fill in the blanks with a lot of dialog. It is also very predictable and what you didn't figure out on your own was just told to you in the last 3 minutes.

If you want to experience Cornwell at her best, try The Body Farm or From Potter's Field and then follow Scarpetta - you won't be disappointed.

Read at your own risk

I purchased this book out of loyalty to an author I have really liked in the past-but now I wish I hadn't wasted the credit on it. Characters are good, but the story goes nowhere & ends abruptly. Pay attention to the reviews before you buy this!

I love this series

I have read the complete Meg Langlow series and am disaapointed that Audible is not carrying all of the books in the series. In fact, the two books carried by Audible are probably my two least favorite in the series. Having said that, they are still excellent "reads". After reading the paperbacks first, I usually have a hard time adjusting to the voices of the narrator. However, Bernadette Dunne did an excellent job. The story takes place at a science fiction convention, along with live parrots, monkeys and tigers - oh my! Imagine a diva actress, fans dressed in costume, an evil little dog, a murder and chaos of the most hilarious nature. If you like to laugh out loud, I recommend this book!

nice and quirky

Fun little story. Good Quirky Characters. The mystery wasn't bad and there was a twist at the end.

Quirky Fun

Parrots, Monkeys, Murder - Oh My! I completely enjoyed this novel. The dialogue is fun and the characters are quirky and enjoyable. This is definitely a 'repeater'. The cast of suspects are so nicely defined, I can picture each of them beautifully. The 'sane' Meg Langslow is, as always, surrounded by such unique individuals that each turn of the 'page' is a joy. Even the critter characters contribute to the fun - or should I say insanity. The culprit is evident - but then again - maybe it's....or even.... listen and see!

Great for a chuckle

This book was a gift, so not one I would have necessarily chosen to listen to. Both the author and narrator provided a cute, easy listen. I would recommend this book to anyone liking amusing mysteries.

Made me think

First, I'd like to say what a huge fan I have become of this fantastic writer. Since Stanek's first book actually. Stanek is hard to top, in my opinion.

THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE, is a fast-paced, roller-coster ride taking the reader on a journey they will think about for a long time to come.

A fantastic, page-turning, thought-provoking, and unique book. I loved it. The story as written by Stanek offers the reader a lot to think about (fiction or not), I, for one, couldn't put this book down, and I was sad when it ended.

I can hardly wait for Stanek's next novel!

Everything DaVinci Code Should Have Been

Sometimes you read so many books that you consider to be good that you forget the feeling that overwhelms you when you read one that is truly wonderful. And then, when you find a wonderful one, you wonder what makes it so, what sets it apart from those others. I wasn't more than thirty or so minutes into *The Pieces of the Puzzle* when I started wondering that very thing.

And then I got to a certain chapter and realized why. In this case there are so many reasons. The most important one, however, is that it makes you feel. Strongly. I was reading the aforementioned chapter and it occurred to me that my stomach was tense, that I was grinding my teeth, that I hated a character so passionately that I could physically feel it. That this novel had roused such an emotion, well, suffice it to say, I hadn't felt that for quite some time with the novels I had been reading. I loved it.

The next component is one of equal importance. Stanek is admirably adept at handling language. His prose isn't overly descriptive but it is evocative and always right on. This novel is one even a discriminating "literary" reader could pick up and find him or herself awed by.

I have to say, I had been disappointed by some of the mystery novels recommended on this site before, but this one makes up for them all.

A Must Listen

This audiobook is OUTSTANDING, and I'm VERY glad to have it. It has to be the best, or at least one of the top 3 audiobooks on audible today. Pieces is smart, fun as hell, intriguing, and challenges the listener with its central puzzle, giving you a chance to figure it out. A great, great audiobook.

This has been my favorite Audible title yet.

I look for books that entertain as well as inform. In this story, I was looking for entertainment and got plenty of it. The time flew by and I could not wait to hear more of the story. A complex, well written novel that fits together in the end like a puzzle!

The narrator was quite interesting and kept the dialogue going well. The story itself was intriguing and controversial enough to make it very interesting.

Yes - the story was hysterical. And the Narrator was very good at all the character's voices.

Unforgettable

Bangkok Tattoo is probably the most compelling book I've encountered in the nearly three years I've been an Audible listener. It is a great many contradictory things: violent, compassionate, graphic, delicate, sexual, sensual, spiritual, surreal, earthy, funny at times, horrible at others, extremely well written and well read. The character development is superb, and the portrait of Bangkok is fascinating. It's an incredible read. Audible offers Burdett's Bangkok 8 (the first of this series) only in an abridged version, so I bought a hardcopy so that I could experience every word. I was not disappointed.

I'm not sure where the other reviewers are coming from. Perhaps it's a matter of morality. Burdett makes no judgments. Bangkok is presented "as is," as are the characters. Prostitutes, corrupt police officials, transexuals, madams, American tourists, most of whom are men who come to Bangkok specifically for sexual purposes--all of these are presented, not sympathetically, but as human beings rather than as caricatures.

I cannot recommend this book too highly, and I urge Audible to find an unabridged version of Bangkok 8 for us, as well. BTW, although Bangkok 8 is a precursor to this book, it is not necessary to have read it first. There are a few things you will not know, but each book stands on its own--a moving experience that will haunt you long after you've finished it.

One of the Better Ones

I listened to this on the strength of someone recommending Bankok 8 which I listened to later. I found this to be superior and thoroghly enjoyed both. If you ever thought of going to Thailand this is a must. Themes helped put our western morality judgments in perspective. The narration is great.

Very well done

Overall the book was excellent in its vision of a part of Thai culture that is not usually reported or understood outside of the country.

Very good BUT an abridged version

I have enjoyed everything I have read or heard by this author for years. The readers are usually exceptionally clear even when speaking in UK regional dialects. The characters are enjoyable and well-defined, the storyline thrilling yet plausible. There is a degree of violence certainly, but it is not overly graphic. Any book suffers when abridged and this is no exceptionj. There were points in listening to this selection where I went back to listen again thinking I had missed something only to find it had likely been edited away...

Mc Dermid does it again

As usual, Val McDermid has created a believable series of situations that uncover gruesome crimes. Excellently read, spanning a broad range of accents. Tony Hill continues as intrepid yet revealing personal confusions. A short but worthwhile read.

I would NEVER have wasted a credit on this if I new it was an abridged edition (and not a well done one either). My error and it won't happen again.

Excellent story

I have been a fan of the "Wire In The Blood" TV series and was delighted that two of the original novels were in audio format. Fantastic plot and characters, I wish there were more.
