Fun book, good narrator

This was my first Lori Foster romance - and the only one currently on audible. I enjoyed it as a short, inexpensive listen. It's typical romance novel fare with a happy ending - in this genre, it's all about the journey, which I found entertaining.

This book is actually part of a series - I figured that out from the characterizations of the hero's friends, and did some looking around. The others aren't available on audio, but Beguiled (Dane) and Wanton (Alec) come before, and Treat Her Right (Zack) and Mr. November (Josh) come after.

I liked the narrator for this book - I especially liked the voice he gave the hero, and how he kept all the characters separate and easy to follow. I hope he records the rest of this series. I find the narration can make or break any audio book, and this guy was real easy to listen to.

Caught me!

Lori Foster's characters were so believable it was refreshing, with the intensity of their emotions to the inadequite way they handled those emotions. The story wisked me from the daily grind.

Sexy

Well if you like sex scenes than this book is for you! This is the first book I have read/listened to by Lori Foster and it was good - not great. It was very strange that the two main characters had never met but within 24 hours she was "taking care of him" wink..wink. Could have had a less predictable ending.

Caught in the Act

I'll admit I love anything by Lori Foster, but this has got to be one of the best. I stayed up all night listening to Mick's story. The narrator was perfect. You feel as if you are in Mick's head. You fall in love as he falls in love with the mysterious and lovely Delia. Is she a liar? Is she a thief? Is she the woman of his dreams despite her faults? This story was so hot it left me hungry for more. I actually listened to the best parts over and over. It is a sexy romance, and a fast paced thriller all rolled into one. Listen to the first chapter and I promise you'll get caught up in it too.

Third Book in the series

LOVED it! "Beguiled" introduces Mick as a 16 yr old boy. In"Caught in the Act",Mick is now the man he was meant to be, falling for the only woman that could captivate him body and soul. Your heart will ache... vivid characters and hot love scenes make you want to listen a second time. Highly recommend all 5 books. "Wanton" is my least favorite. 1. Beguiled 2. One of Elizabeth Peters' best!

This is an older work of Elizabeth Peters (she of the Amelia Peabody mysteries) but remains one of her best. It's a well-written romance with overtones of the supernatural and one of the funniest books she's ever written, although that doesn't dilute the spookiness of the scarier scenes. There are characters you'll like and characters you'll cheerfully detest. I heartily recommend this for any circumstances, but especially for long drives when you want to stay awake -- you can't stop listening because you want to know what happens, although other drivers may wonder why you're laughing like a loon when you're alone in your car!

Peters at her finest

Funny and entertaining with a touch of supernatural. Reminds me more of the books she writes in her Barbara Michaels personna.

Out of date

When I first read this book some 20 years ago, I remember it being a delight. It has not aged well, however. This time around, it seemed hopelessly dated, particularly with regard to all the allusions to then in-vogue "women's lib." When it finally wraps up and the mystery is solved, I found it hard to believe the motives of the villain/s.

Never thought I'd be disappointed in Liz Peters!!!

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Peters usually does a better job balancing different ideologies but not in this book. If you believe that all political conservatives are arrogant jerks you'll like this book. If you believe that all Christian people are pompous know-it-all's, you'll love this book. If you believe that the occult is a noble spiritual option, pull up a chair.

I enjoy mysteries and this book barely qualifies, I will be more careful in choosing my next book.

Grace Conlin is talented and and does a good job with the different character voices.

The Librarian character was only there to make fun of a so-called Christians.

There was no mystery. It was obvious from almost the beginning who-done-it.

Great Story - better if unabridged

I have read several books by Dan Simmons - all of them great. When I saw "The Terror" at the bookstore, I immediately checked to see if it was available on Audible. It was, but I was disappointed to see that it was abridged. Nevertheless, I purchased it and thoroughly enjoyed Simon Vances reading of this intriguing fictional account of what happened to "The Terror" and her sister ship the "The Erebus". I gave four stars instead of five, only because it was abridged. I hope Audible provides more titles by Dan Simmons.

Excellently written and narrated.

I've been listening to audiobooks for over 5 years, and this story is in my top 5.

This book is extremely well-written, with a narrative that moves you along like a good adventure story, but has elements of mythological tales, murder mystery, suspense drama, and historical fiction all worked in. The setting is fascinating - 1800's naval exploration of the NW Passage, and the characters are complex and interesting (though not all likable).

It's a dark tale, and doesn't necessarily all wrap up cleanly or as the reader would want, but it's nice to listen to a story that is not predictable.

I cannot say enough good things about the narrator. His style, cadence, characters, EVERYTHING is spot-on, and moves the story forward to where you more experience it than listen to it.

Overall, I highly recommend this book.

Superb!

An intriguing & creative tale concerning a 19th Century historical mystery of a doomed arctic exploration. The narrator is superb & flows between British accents realistically & effortlessly. He varies his diction enough to maintain your interest. I was sorry when it ended.

Dan Simmons is a master of futuristic high tech science fiction, & his "Hyperion" series is without equal.

More Dan Simmons please!

Wonderful Story- but abridgement ruins it

If you read the book which is over 700 pages, you get the actual depth and purpose of this wonderful book. It actually makes you feel the cold and relate to the extreme hardships these men went through. The decision to abridge this book was a huge mistake- as it is with all abridged books - The one bright spot in this audio book is the narrator- Simon Vance who is superb!!

Historical Horror

One of my favorite books of the past few years (and I've never been a Simmons fan before, although I sure am now). A totally unique, compelling mix of historical fiction and horror, with some nautical adventure and shipboard life thrown into the pot for seasoning. Moves really fast, and the characters, events and even the scares are believable. I absolutely loved it --- give it a try, even if you don't usually like books in the historical fiction or horror genres.

Trivia

An entertaining story about Christ's shroud and the Templars, absolutely predictable, psychologically clumsy, and ultimately unremarkable. The reader's voice did not captivate me, and her imitation of Italians speaking English with an Italian accent (as they speak Italian, their native language) is funny.

Keeps Ya Guessin'

Although this was not a "saga," it nonetheless held my attention and made me wonder whether what we think is the truth really is. Enjoyable for a mystery that is not too deep but still holds the reader's attention.

Love it!

I love Mariah Stewart and I love Anna Fields. I have read all the reviews for the "Truth" series; maybe people find Anna Fields difficult to listen to. I disagree - I love her from Barbara Holloway stories(Kate Wilhelm). This series is worth listening to!

Good Story- Poor Narration

The story was fine. It kept me interested. The narrator had a pleasant voice when she spoke as a female character. She sounded like a drunk cowboy whenever she did a male voice. It was horrible!

Unfortunately I could not get past the narrator and the many horrendous voices she was affecting to pay attention to the plot. I am not sure what she was going for but the men sounded like functional idiots and her awful intonation just overshadowed the plot.

All Around Good!

What made the experience of listening to Dark Truth the most enjoyable?

This is a very good story with a wonderful narrater Anna Fields was one of the best, she is missed and Mariah Stewart keeps the stories moving so you don't get bored with the details. Excellent series!

Good Mystery for an Anna Fields Fan

Would you listen to Dark Truth again? Why?

I own way too many to re listen to this story. Once you know the ending, the author's work on this one does not seem to be worth a re listen, unless you need to go back to catch the clues for the next book. (boy are they in there!)

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

the stories stand along. the author uses characters to link her books and she does add a few clues to draw you into buying the next book. These are not deep books, but do have a mystery that compels you to finish.

Which character as performed by Anna Fields was your favorite?

Mitch and Wes, but I am a long time fan of the late great Anna Fields and purchased this author due to her reading it. I may purchase the other books in this series when I need an A.F. reading fix.

Kate Wilhelm's Barbara Holloway series is much better than this one

Romance, Susan E. Phillips series is her all time best.

Enjoyable

Having been a longtime climber ( of middling talent at best), I really enjoyed the book as the author truly understands climbers and their motivations and captured the climbing experience very effectively. A bit heavy on the supernatural, but it didn't really take away from the book. I also agree that you can see the twist coming from afar, but it still had plenty of suspense and adventure. Well produced and found the narrator agreeable. I enjoyed the technical climbing terms, it made the book much more authentic.

Great!

This story held my interest straight through- I didn't want to stop listening. The author is very skilled at bringing a scene to life, and I could picture every event as if I were there. I will look forward to more of his books. The narration was perfect!

Non-Climbers Beware

Perhaps if I knew more about climbing, I'd have enjoyed this book more. Since the author explained very little of the jargon, I was lost half the time about what was going on. The story was okay, some parts were suspenseful, and the narrator tried his best to make things interesting. I saw the "twist" coming about midway through the book. All in all, I don't recommend this.

Readers should match the characters.

The book is good. I am a Jeff Long fan. Unfortunately, I did not think the reader and his accents were a good match for the book and characters. If you can get over the English / fake Texan accent I say listen to the book, otherwise just read it.

My favorite Sloan so far

This is my favorite CD Sloan audiobook in the series so far. Perhaps I paid more attention, because this narrator is much improved over the narrator of the previous audiobooks. The plot is clever and enjoyable.
