    Title: Lost City
Subtitle: A Kurt Austin Adventure (NUMA Files, Book 5)
    Author: Clive Cussler, Paul Kemprecos
    Narrator: Len Cariou
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-29-05
    Publisher: Penguin Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
An enzyme that will dramatically prolong life has been discovered 2,000 feet down in the North Atlantic, in an area known as "Lost City". But why are the people attempting to harvest it getting killed? Why are the scientists in a remote Greek laboratory disappearing one by one? What does this all have to do with a body found frozen in the ice high up in the Alps?
To Kurt Austin, leader of NUMA's Special Assignments Team, and his colleague Joe Zavala, it's clear they have their work cut out for them, but it may be even bigger than they think, in fact, it may be their greatest challenge of all.
Rich with all the hair-raising action and endless imagination that have become Cussler's hallmarks, Lost City is an exceptional thriller.
    Critic Reviews:
"With tight pacing, vocal nuance, and varying pitch, Cariou intensifies the suspense, creating unforgettable characters and plot in this multilayered story of world domination." (AudioFile)
"[An] excellent series....Kidnappings, hair's-breadth escapes, fierce battles, strange science, beautiful women and plenty of action add up to vintage Cussler." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Great story- kept us rivietted,
Strong characters common to this author and interesting plot. We were always sorry when we got to our destination and had to turn it off.
    Abridged version lost continuity.
Story somewhat disjointed in presentation. Story line not very believable. Creation of mutated creatures bizarre. Overall, just not as good as most of Cussler's works.
    Unsatisfying
The book was formulaic, cliche-ridden, and utterly predictable.
Still, it would have been a fairly good and diverting listen, but for the very poor delivery of the reader. His awful comic-book French and Scottish accents were so bad and off-putting that I tended to focus more on his wandering accent than on what he was saying. Perhaps the reader of the unabridged version was better, but this guy should just stay with his American inflection and admit defeat in the face of 'zee French accent.'

    A man of many voices
If I were to choose the best reader I've listened to, as a seasoned audiobook fan, it would have to be Anthony Heald, And it would be his performance reading The Lost World that convinced me of this. And yes, I said performance, because that is indeed what it is. The obvious commitment and energy that he put into this project is commendable. His voices are superb, so much so that I felt I was right there with them on that island. I am also an avid Crichton reader, and enjoyed reading The Lost World, but it wasn't until listening to Heald that it became a favorite. All in all, this is the tape that made me fall in love with audiobooks, and I would suggest it to anyone and everyone interested in hearing great audiobook talent.
    They're Back!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you saw the movie and thought it sucked, then you might like this book. It's totally different and and Malcolm doesn't even have an annoying kid in it "that kills Raptors with gymnastics"...like the movie!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really, but the book is better than the movie and smarter.
Did Anthony Heald do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, but his Levine voice is kind of fruity and annoying.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither, but it made me wish the Spielberg version followed the book more closely. The film just has many people with guns getting ripped to pieces and not one gun killing a dinosaur. This book has better pacing and is smarter, even if it's still not as good as the first.
    Meh
Heald is a bit too much of a thespian for my taste... A little too strong on the voice acting.
Also, far from Chrichton's best work...
    Didn't realize this was abridged
I was very disappointed when I realized I had downloaded this rather than the full version, it lacks the juicy and gory details that I adore this book for. The narrator, while excellent at his varying voices, is not Scott Brick which I was also disappointed about. The story itself is good but I would absolutely recommend the full version.
    Worst narrator ever!
I've read The Lost World many times. It is another well written & fascinating story by Michael Crichton. Recently I've been driving more & more for my job. To pass the time I downloaded several audiobooks by some of my favorite authors. The performance of the narrator for this book was absolutely infuriating. I could barely tolerate his voice, acting, impressions, & other noises he made. I will not listen to any more audiobooks that he narrates. Other than that the story itself was awesome.

May as well just watch the DVD
I wish I had noticed how abridged this was before I bought it. But it is like someone describing the movie to you as it happens. Way too short. I may have to go buy the book now to see all the character development that I missed.
If you have seen the move, don't bother getting this audiobook.
It's a great story though. Wish there was an unabridged version.
    Very choppy abridgement
This is basically the 'Cliff Notes' version of the book. Cut back far too much - this version tells you the basics, but there is absolutely zero character development.
    DIFFERENT FROM THE MOVIE
Being different from the move and being abrifged made this a bad listen. Dont bother.
    Just watch the movie
I thought the movie was just okay and unfortunately, the audio book is worse. Why spend 3 hours listening to this when you could just watch the movie in about 2 hours and get the same out of it? Plus, the narrator, who wasn't bad, had a weak and lame voice for someone trying to portrait a killer called Red Dragon.
    awesome book
I really loved this book could not stop reading and loved this thrilling story so captivating

Simple romance with dated reading style
There was enough interest in the characters and plot to keep me listening, but the narration seemed old-fashioned especially at the amorous parts...loud music would kick in and make it difficult to hear! If this was my first taste of an audio book I would have to say I wouldn't be too impressed. Simple, feel good book with the baddies truly getting their come-uppance.
    Trumpets?
    Any additional comments?
The narrator did a decent job but at certain times loud music, including trumpets, invaded the scene which left it difficult to hear the narration.
The story was not that great - just so-so but maybe the unabridged version would have been better. Except I don't think I could have tolerated the trumpets in a long version.
    Very funny
Silly too, so leave your troublesome world behind and put your logical mind on hold and enjoy a romp.
    Eh - so, so
Don't get me wrong, the story itself is fantastic - Amanda Quick is an excellent author (in all her categories and names). However, the narrator was not very good and the multiple muscial intros were annoying and made listening difficult. Would buy the book just to get the story again rather than listen to it one more time.
    vexing
Ridiculous story, not at all like " the Paid Companion" and on top of that vexing background music.

enjoyed it very much. was slow at parts , but, not enough to lose your interest.
Great book ... Not so great abridged audio!
The book "Long After Midnight" was entertaining and kept you on the edge, however this abridged version of the story left me wanting more details. I have other abridged stories that gave complete details of a book and you came away satisfied. This one missed the mark for me.
The narrator was good, so there is no fault there. Just not enough to the story. Still a great fan of Iris Johansen! Just wish this audio was unabridged.

    A Fun Read
I really enjoyed this book. I don't know why I hadn't heard of or read it before now but am glad I found it. I usually like very suspenseful thrillers and spy books. This has some government intrigue but is not your typical thriller. I actually laughed out loud more than a few times.
It was a thoroughly great read. I highly recommend it.
    A really nice listen
Aside from the bad character accents by the narrator (which make smart character sound dumb), I enjoyed listening to this book. If you are looking for something overly complicated and deep, keep looking. It's just a fun ride.
    Interesting satire
This is my first Stephen Coonts book. I always figured he was way to serious and probably wrote to realistic violence for me. I can handle SciFi/Fantasy violence fine. But this one, the killings didn't bother me at all. I felt they all deserved what they got. I absolutely loved the political satire about the president and his stupidity about the orders he gave and his utter lack of basic knowledge. Also, the military intervention both by the U.S. and Australian government to me portrays exactly how the governments would or have handled such occurances.
The greed angle impressed me. It is amazing how realistic that was and was very believable.
I was surprised by the 'cougar' angle. Not a lot of what I have read handles that subject very much, it is a very common happening in real life.
Having actually seen with my own eyes UFOs many years ago. My sighting was validated with other identical sightings the same day by others who where with me and also reported in NYC at the same time and 75 miles east of where I was. It happened in the 50s before we even ventured into space. This is a subject that is of great interest to me. I love the ideas behind the saucer in this book as they are to me very valid premises.
It amazes me how many creationists can't embrace that if He could create what we have here on earth, that he would be limited to just this tiny little rock we live on and feel that such ideas as other worlds would smash their views of the religion they embrace instead of enhancing their awe of what He can do.
I am looking forward to the rest in the series.
A good listen-didn't care for the ending
A good Sci-fi story with a kinda of bad end.

Painfully overwritten! Skip this one please!
What would have made The Guilty One better?
A story. Any story where something actually happened. This would have made a great short story - like 60-90 minutes. Most every scene is a description and nothing actually occurs. It was painful to listen all the way to the end.
Would you ever listen to anything by Lisa Ballantyne again?
    Sadly, no.
What about Steve Wests performance did you like?
Great voice talent. Very good at taking on all ages and both sexes.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Guilty One?
    Most all of it.
    an okay story
I loved the performance. and the back story but the main story is so so. at least for my taste. I would not call this book a thriller.
    Great story and great narration
I have listened to a ton of books and this is one of my favorites, though parts of it were very sad. I would highly recommend this one, it didn't disappoint.
    The Guilty One
Amazing story and an amazing performance by the narrator. Very well done. I would recommend it to anyone.

    GET TO THE POINT!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, I read approximately 2 books a week. I LOVE this type of book where it flips back and forth. However, this book was ridiculous! I was constantly rewinding/ flipping back pages because I felt the author kept leaving out something or was just missing something all together.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
    I LOVED THE BEGINNING!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    Ehhh...
Could you see The Hidden Legacy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I READ OTHER REVIEWS AND THEY WERE "GLOWING." MAYBE IT'S ME...
    A Gripping Drama Brilliantly Unpacked!
What made the experience of listening to The Hidden Legacy the most enjoyable?
The smooth and brisk pace of the novel.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Peter Vaughn. He had a kind heart.
Have you listened to any of Jessica Carrolls other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I like to relish the story.
    Superficial strengths but ...
Some books work better in print. I suspect that this in one. The audio version is a long winding road to nowhere. Not unpleasant but you soon realise it's going nowhere. The energy that comes from sympathetic characters and genuine moral issues just isn't there. The analysis of the horrible crime at the heart of the story is thin, this turns out the be important for me. The story ends in the end.... that's it.
    In a word, disappointing.
It kicked off with a very gripping and strong opening which drew me in. I was looking forward to more of the same, some deep and tense voyage through a life interspersed with twists and suspense.
