Incredibly absorbing!

This story had me hooked from the first page! Emotionally, the story had me all over the place. Katia has a way with words, and even when I thought I had figured out what was happening, I was impressed to find that I was wrong. Well done!

One of the worse

This book is in the top 10 list of worse books I've ever read. When Annie was first arrested, I thought it might actually be an interesting story, but it went downhill afterwards. You will know from the beginning who the 'bad guy' is, then when you get the full picture at the very end of the book, you will know a little bit more of the why. The ending is horrible. Simply horrible. Had it ended with the arrest in Italy, with more focus on that, it would have been a huge improvement. And was it really necessary to tell us EVERY TIME Lexy was breastfed? How about "After I fed the baby .... ". I'm done with this author.

What is up with all the breast feeding in this book?

There was WAY too much talk about breast feeding in this book. I don't know what the author's problem is but a reader of mystery books doesn't need detailed descriptions of each time someone breast feeds. It didn't help the plot. I read the whole book because I thought she had some interesting twists and the book had potential. The ending was ridiculous and the relationship between the twins that led up to "the situation" wasn't explained enough. For the heroine not to know her identical twin better than that is kind of a stretch.

A good story line that grabs you in the first chapter and makes you want to read more.

Used too much description to make the book longer. Who needs to know about the kitchen appliances, the color of the bedrooms, etc

Almost a score of five.....

Always been my Favourite Five since the 1940's, and only spoilt by repeated mentions of jeans! Like chalk scrapping on a blackboard it is painful every time! Also, pence used! It is so weird as other little used and outdated words used and are perfect. The Five didn't wear jeans! Do wish these delightful readings could stick to the text and replace these odd alterations. Otherwise, simply smashing!

Mixed results.

I was attracted to this book since the principal character is a "strip tracer" and I thought it might be interesting to see how they work and what resources they can summon to the task. There were a few of those insights and she, who should know better, failed to execute some of the more basic aspects of escape. While the book moves at a healthy pace, it frankly has too many characters, some good, some bad, some "who knows" and the ending gets a bit cartoonish but should make for some interesting movie scenes. As I read the story and she hurtled along with her sister's young daughter, I thought, "That kid is going to need some therapy when this is over!" Interesting as the story winds down, she is getting some. Really a borderline 4 but good enough not to knock it down a star.

Good airplane read

If you like fast action books that read like a television show, you will enjoy this book. I read the entire book and enjoyed most of it but gave it a three star rating because there were several plot points that confused me and because the characters either weren't that interesting or were caricatures (bad guys were really bad, good guys the strong silent type). This book was described as being about a woman who is living off the grid - she is not. She is definitely on the grid, using her real name, and in a highly visible and somewhat dangerous job finding people who have - guess what? Skipped out on some legal entanglement. The book started off strongly but then there were multiple jumps in time to introduce characters and their back stories - it got a bit confusing from this point on.

Supernatural suspense

Okay - Morgan - or should that be Henderson doesn't do this quite as well as Simon R Green but this is a book all lovers of pulp monster fiction and pulp detective fiction can read and probably enjoy.

Enjoyable Historical Mystery

It was a nice change of pace not to have a 15th century mystery set at court or involve kings, spies, or religious persecution. The Rough Collier is set in a mining community in Scotland. At times the narrator is hard to understand. I don't know if the text is written in dialect or if it is the readers interpretation. I enjoyed Gil and Elise, the main characters, who solve a murder mystery tainted by witchcraft and home brewed medicine. I will probably visit them again.

enjoyable series.

five months have passed and gil has taken his wife elys back to his home so that his mother can get to know his bride. during their stay a body is found by peat cutters. the acid in the peat has mummified the body so only his hair retains its colour. gil has the task of finding out who the body is and tracing a man who has gone missing.

another good story by pat McIntosh good characterisation and plot with descriptions of life for the ordinary people of the times with accusation of witchcraft.

well performed by Andrew Watson.

A rich tale of murder and intrigue

I am enjoying listening to these books, I feel I'm getting more by hearing them than I did from reading. The nuances from the accent really helps with understanding the Scottish terms

Disturbingly Sad

Would you consider the audio edition of Human Remains to be better than the print version?

I have no preference, but the narrator did such an excellent job the audio version may be preferable

The book was full of suspense and entertaining but also very depressing. It brings to light how lonely and hopeless people can be and how overlooked by a society of busy,multitasking and indifferent people we have become. Do you know your neighbors?

My overall feeling after the book is sadness.

For Criminal Minds fans

I grabbed up this title as soon as I saw it available because I had really enjoyed "Into the Darkest Corner" by the same author and narrator. I did like this story very much but was disappointed in Karen Cass's reading this time. Her voicing of Annabelle, Sam and some of the side characters was fine, but I think her interpretation of Collin, the villian (that's not a spoiler) I think was too loud and strident for one that I thought should have been voiced more pensively furtive. Also, some of the supporting female characters came across too perky - almost ditzy, and that was also a distaction. A more subtle touch would have been more appropriate. Perhaps just a matter of taste, but for me it downgraded the enjoyment of the listen.

As for the story - very creepy, almost squeamishly so in some places. But it does build suspense and Annabelle is someone to root for.

Too much coincidence

Great heroes plan their escapes or have a trick or two up their sleeve when things get tough. Not Blaine McCracken. Dumb luck and an indian war tribe pull him out of the fire... yeah, I said indian warriors.. really? I'm all about suspension of disbelief, but this was too much for me to stomach. First book in a long time I wish I'd not purchased.

A Cartoon

This was a cartoon from the clumsy plotline to the ham-handed reader performance. At first I thought it was so bad it was good, but I finally concluded it was just bad. Been with Audible since '01 or so; this was the second book I didn't finish.

Far-fetched and Disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I felt that the plot lacked depth, credulity and that the characters were for the most part too one dimensional. The protagonist jumps unscathed from one dangerous and impossible situation to another, dodging bullets and outsmarting everyone while leaving death and destruction in his wake. Basically I felt that too many events in the book and their outcome were way over the top and that severed any connection I may have had with the plot and characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jon Land again?

Definitely not.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator came across as unnatural,wooden and unpolished; the pace was choppy and his sense of timing off. A good performance pulls you into the book and makes you feel like a participant in the story; the narrator's' voice tone matches the mood set by the author and captures your imagination. The conversations sound real, not forced (or read) and the accents are believable. To illustrate, narrators that have these qualities in my opinion are George Guidall, Gerard Doyle, John Lee, Samuel Gillies, Kate Reading, Jenny Sterlin, Davina Porter to name but a few.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I think the plot itself had real potential - it is unfortunate that it stretched the bounds of escapist fiction to the point of absurdity.

Great, entertaining read, not so sure about consistency

I loved this book, just like I love all of Charlotte Link's books that I've read. While I found the plot well-developed and intriguing, I had my doubts about the historical authenticity and logical consistency. I'd like to poke a few holes into that one! A teenager getting pregnant in the late 1970s (1978 or so, in England) and being forced into a loveless, abuse marriage against her will by her father, a religious zealot? Nope, not credible, I was a teenager in Germany during that time, and that wasn't the sentiment back then. Had this plot been set in the 1950s, sure, I would have bought it. But the way I see it - great story, but the timeline was way off!

Avoid this one

Painfully artificial, contrived plot, interspersed with truly appalling acts of violence, makes this easily Charlotte Link's worst novel. Virtually unreadable--I was unable to finish. Save your money and do not purchase this atrocious book.

Friends or enemies?

A psychological thriller, a book without a single boring page, always exciting although sometimes exaggerated but it fits nevertheless into the story. I liked the different background the actors came from and the way they made friends and learned to hate and at the end almost forgive the one who brought - as they presume - trouble into their lives. I do recommend this book for reading, I enjoyed it very much.
