Satisfaction

I first read the Apprentice Adept when I was still a boy, much to my mother's dissatisfaction. Long did I believe the story ended with the third. My delight upon finding book 5 in a used book store was great, as was my despair of ever finding the others. Audible allowed me to thoroughly enjoy this great work, delivered most excellently by the narrator, for which my gratitude shall endure for some time.

Phaze 1 - Stile 0

What other book might you compare Out of Phaze to and why?

The previous three books in the series were entertaining despite the gross flaws of the main character Stile. The author had obviously projected a wild wish-fulfillment fantasy onto his main character and it was quite disturbing at times. The protagonist Stile is an arrogant, self-serving jerk.

Any additional comments?

So, it was quite a pleasant shock that the best book in the series so far was the one that was almost entirely absent of the Stile character.

A wonder of a book

Book 4 keeps the world of Phaze going with twists. This one keeps twisting and turning also.

Would you consider the audio edition of Seraphs to be better than the print version?

Yes, Natalie Gold reads the characters so well. She brings them to life.

What did you like best about this story?

Thorn St. Croix as a Neomage, trying to make a living among people who would kill her just for being able to work the elements around her.

What about Natalie Golds performance did you like?

I liked Natalie's "voice" for Thorn's character and the life she breathes into the other characters.

Very interesting world Faith Hunter has created.

The Rogue Mage series for me was very thought provoking. I could tell that a ton of research was done for this series. The detail was amazing and I don't think I have ever read anything like it. I will listen to or read a lot of books twice back to back because the first time through I do a lot of thinking about different aspects of the book etc. and miss things sometimes miss an important bit of info etc especially if I have read a lot of reviews beforehand. With a second read/listen, I tend to pick up little bits here and there that are important to the storyline. I tend to do this with movies too. Also if I have a copy of the ebook or print on hand, I will read along with the narrator. You would be surprised at how doing this helps enhance the story and help me remember things easier.

Another thing...I kept a pad of paper and pen handy to write down the 26 words I had to look up in the dictionary (I write down and look up words a lot when I read. It helps me fully understand what is being said. I also write down quotes and keep a written log of through books I read). Anyway...this is a great series and author. If you want something different or that makes you think or brings a book out of the "mold", then Faith Hunter is a must read author!!

awesome story

I knew that Jane Yellowrock would be a hard act to follow. As a happily addicted fan, I was in doubt, and did not want to experience the letdown of struggling through a new series, inferior to the first.

To my grateful ears, unfolded a new world, different in pace and story, but just ' ducky'.

I love the way Hunter weaves a story.

Literary equivalent of a Terry Gilliam film

I've heard mention of Jack Vance and his Dying Earth books more than a few times in fantasy circles, but this is the first work of his that I've read. Now, I can see why writers like George R.R. Martin and Dan Simmons consider him such an influence. Vance was quite imaginative and his droll, literate style of writing set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

This novel offers plenty that dedicated fantasy readers will find appealing. Its hero, Cugel, is a thorough scoundrel who manipulates others in a variety of clever, sometimes heartless ways, then puts on a shameless show of innocence that would do an embezzling politician proud, but he's constantly finding his gains reversed, so you end up feeling some sympathy for him. The world of the Dying Earth is a colorful, baroque place populated by decadent societies, strange religions, weird, dangerous creatures, magicians, and interesting magical devices. Such is Vance's inventiveness, that I lost count of the number of times I recognized an idea or an object I'd seen in some later book, by another author. There's even a virtual reality of sorts. Not everyone will like Vance's deliberately ornate style of writing, but for me, it was part of the charm. The excessively formal way the characters speak to each other while indulging in all sorts of low-minded acts can be quite funny.

That said, some of the book's initial charms wear a little thin after a while. There's little structure to the overall plot -- Cugel just roams from one misadventure to the next, repeating his scheming and self-aggrandizing claims in each new place. Only a few characters persist through the whole novel. And the stilted language does get a bit tiresome -- after a while, you just want a bartender to talk like a bartender, or a brutish monster to talk like a brutish monster.

But, never mind, there's plenty of wit and creativity here, and its not hard to see Vance's influence on the fantasy genre. Which is to say, on those authors who aspired to better writing than Ron E. Howard, but took their worlds a little less seriously than Tolkien did. Picture the sort of book that Terry Gilliam might have made into a movie, and you have Eyes of the Overworld.

I love Cugel!

This is one of my favorite books, and it is great to hear it aloud.

Starts slow,,,gets really fun later on

Jack Vance is a great author, and helped create the fantasy genre with his Dying Earth series. This was written in his later period, and it is rich with both noble and mendacious characters and meandering, cynical digressions which can either drive you crazy or laugh with delight. With my 5 star rating you can safely count me in the later group.

Suldren's Garden is the first of the Lyonesse trilogy, & it takes a little while to get going. Stay with it, and by the end of the book, you can' wait for the next one.

SCI-FI/FANTASY WRITER LIKE NO OTHER

I am 65 years old.When I was about 13 I discovered science Fiction outside of comic books.It was a novelette in GALAXY Science Fiction magazine by Jack Vance entitled THE DRAGON MASTERS which had just won the Hugo and [I think] Nebula awards.

I was hooked on both Jack Vance and Science Fiction.To this day Jack Vance is one of my favorites.WORDSMITH comes to mind.Not only does he create worlds,characters,civilizations and concepts as good as any of the genre,he's different.No Sci-Fi/Fantasy author writes quite like Vance.Lyonesse is of course fantasy.It's kind of like reading a Grimm's Faerie tale/Lord of the Rings with a touch of Edgar Allen Poe and a dash of H.P.Lovecraft.This is his most ambitious work and it does not disappoint .However don't rule out reading his other books.I suggest you start with THE DRAGON MASTERS.

beautifully written, wonderful plot

Jack Vance is perhaps one of the most talented American writers of the 20th century. Suldrun’s Garden is a modern day Grimm’s fair tale. The characters are rich; the story is convoluted and interposed on numerous levels. Kevin Collins does a wonderful job bring to life those characters.

Narrator issues

I had a hard time listening to this narrator and couldn't get through the first chapter.

Tragic Beginning of Epic Story

I had read this novel in print back sometime in the 90's and remembered it very well. I remembered also thinking that the first book started out slow and was almost insufferably tragic. But too, I also remembered that the story really took off and held me in thrall from about the last third of this first book and through also the second and third.

Great story, poorly presented

I too love this tale, as well as the rest of the Elemental Master series, and have read it a number of times in book format.

I cannot recommend this version of the book due to the very poor narration. As mentioned in a previous review, the narrator is wooden and does not clearly differentiate the various characters. Words are mispronounced throughout the recording and some are even transposed or changed ("appeal" for "appear", "or" for "on", "she" for "he"). Minor errors are to be expected in recorded books as an occasional typo might be found it the printed version. But these errors so permeated the "performance" that I was all-to-often jerked out of the world of the book.

Finding pronunciations is as easy as going to a dictionary website, where the word will be pronounced for you. I'm surprised the audio editor didn't pay closer attention, considering the number of production staff listed at the end of the book.

I will not purchase another book read by this narrator, and am very glad the rest of the books in this series have different performers. I will also preview books by this producer more thoroughly before purchasing.

(4 stars for the book, 1 star for the narrator for a total of 2.5 stars)

One of my favorite retelling of Beauty & the Beast

A good retelling of Beauty & the Beast, keeping the key points of the 18th century fairytale and blending it with turn-of-the-century America. As a fan of literature and history, and former resident of both Chicago and San Francisco, I appreciated the literary and theatrical references, and the representation of the historical era.

This is one of Mercedes Lackey's earlier books, and it shows through in writing that could be better, but it remains a fun tale. Lackey gets bonus points for finally asking if Beauty would have really wanted the Beast to turn into a prince, and talking things from there.

Good book, poorly read

I have loved this adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast' in the style of Lackey's Elemental Masters series for years, so when it came up in Audible's library I snagged it right away. Having listened to the first twenty minutes, though, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get through it. The narrator's reading is expressionless and wooden. It isn't only that Black-Regan doesn't "do the voices." Not everyone can convincingly pull off a voice of the opposite gender, and it's better that they not try than do it badly. But there is no inflection or emphasis in any of the narration - no emotion at all to reflect whether what is going on is exciting, or sad, or moving. It makes for an experience that bores me as a reader, and is not good for keeping me engaged. I was very disappointed.

Story decent; visual disability a laugh

The daughter of a professor and a scholar of medieval literature and languages in her own right, Rosalind Hawkins is uncertain as to what her future holds when her father dies unexpectedly and she learns his creditors intend to take everything he'd ever owned.

Very enjoyable

This is my favorite of Mercedes Lackey's re-told fairy tales, and I was pleased to find it available in audio format. Maya Witherspoon is a terrific character and you immediately become engrossed in her story as a young Anglo-Indian woman who has successfully conquered the barriers of the male-dominated English medical/surgical profession in the late 1800s. The people she meets in her London charity hospital work and her private medical practice are vividly portrayed, and many become her friends and supporters.

Michelle Ford does a quite good job of differentiating the characters' voices and accents, both male and female.

Highly recommended, and I know I'll listen to this again and again.

Fun Read

I enjoyed this story very much, my first from Mercedes Lackey. It was such an interesting mixture of England, India, Turn of the Century, Women's Suffragettes, and magic, with a splash of romance thrown in, for good measure. Michelle Ford did a good job of narration, though she mis-pronounced several words. Difference between English and American pronounciations? Not sure.

Fan from the Beginning

Would you listen to The Serpent's Shadow again? Why?

I read this book when it was first released about 11 years ago. My mother actually gave it to me as a gift. I was hooked and didn't even know that it was a part of a series until 5 years later. I've since listened to it and reread it at least 4 times. The heroine is absolutely wonderful with her strength and intelligence while maintaining her femininity and being a true heroine. The story is compelling and the character development is clear and well done. I have and will listen to this repeatedly.

WHAT KIND OF GOWNS DID SHE BRING?

IT WASN'T HER BUSINESS WHY ELIZABETH WOULD NOT MARRY HIM.

Your may be wondering why a He-Man like me would read this. The truth is I read the first book in this series and liked it. I have read some of Lackey's stand alone novels and liked them, such as Take a Thief and Brightly Burning. I also enjoyed Owl Flight. This had a good start in Chapter One, with this mean spirited witch putting a death curse on baby Mirana. In the next chapter Mirana is talking to water sprites and seeing the magical world, others can not see and I am still with it. Then we get into teenage angst and talking about hats, gowns and corsets.

This was obviously written for the female audience and I am sure many women will love this. I on the other hand am not interested in gowns, hats, corsets and teenage angst.

Fantastic and compelling!

What did you love best about The Gates of Sleep?

The narrator was amazing, really made all the characters come to life. The voice for Madame was perfect! Exactly how I imagined it would be when I read the book. And Marina is a great character, very realistic with her love of the fine clothing and dreams of "society".

I love a good Fairy Tale parody! Sleeping Beauty didn't let me down.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! As it was, I drove slower than usual since I only let myself listen to it in the car .

Enjoyable, light yet with character

As with this entire series, this book plays with a folktale. Part of the fun is to see how the author unfolds the predictable parts in a unique or clever way. Easy to listen to, good for a younger audience if you share your books with family and want to steer away from hot romance and vivid violence.

It was easy to listen to while driving or doing other things. A break in the listening did not dampen the books story.

Narrator spoils the story

Maybe I'm too picky but when a narrator cannot make up his/her mind which way to pronounce a word or name and does it two or more different ways, it does detract from the story. This narrator does it consistently throughout the whole book. I do realize British pronunciations differ from American but this one is ridiculous. Please do it over with a better narrator and redistribute like you did with Nora Roberts' Whiskey Beach a couple of years ago because I'd like to keep the series.

If you could sum up Phoenix and Ashes in three words, what would they be?

interesting, thought-provoking, brilliant

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the feel of it, the overall sense of realness WW1 brings to the story.

What does Michelle Ford bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

the accents, if you are not a British citizen than the rhythm of the dialog wouldn't be present as vividly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

to avoid any spoilers, I would just say that the entire journey of hard won Freedom was very moving and a very dear concept.

This story is a great retelling of Cinderella, with WW1 as a back drop. That said it is very difficult to say you can't see the ending coming... but this is definitely a book that proves, it's not the destination but the journey that matters. You will enjoy a new landscape as you travel down a fresh path into an old tale. It may even open your eyes to the thought that Fairy Tales may come in, at first glance, ordinary packages.

Lackey at her best

The horror and carnage of world war I is depicted in a way that brings it to a very personal level. The impact on the daily lives of all strata of British life and how they tried to cope with privation and loss is wrenching. Toss this all together with a wicked stepmother,two nasty stepsisters, and a cruelly treated stepchild. Then add magic good and sinister, a handsome young man and you have a whopping good story!

Great book

I've read this book numerous times. The narrator does this book justice I couldn't turn it off even though I knew the outcome.

I enjoyed this retelling very much. The taro lessons were amazing. The narrator was good. All in all it was enjoyable

This book is typical of the series and quite an enjoyable tale however the narrator was seriously lacking. Not meaning to be absolutely insulting to her but is English her second language? Forgive me but it certainly took away from enjoying the story when I was left wondering why certain phrases were recited in a certain way.

A Great Book, But Unimpressive Narration

Would you try another book from Mercedes Lackey and/or Mirabai Galashan?

I love this author, and this series in particular. You can tell she does a lot of research to create a historically accurate setting for her tales to juxtapose the magic, which she also seeks to ground in lore and fact. The narrator, however, is not my favorite. Her accents are terrible, and there is always a sense that she has not read the story in advance. She stumbles over foreign words and those she does not know (it's always easy to tell when she doesn't) and often puts the wrong emphasis on syllables in a word or words in a sentence, as if she is reading without full comprehension. She's tolerable and not the worst I've ever heard by any means, but it's hard to lose oneself in the story if the narrator isn't guiding properly.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Mirabai Galashan?

Only if she does another in this series, because the books are good enough to put up with her slightly clumsy style of narrating.

Was Reserved for the Cat worth the listening time?

Yes, despite the narrator. I love this book enough to own both a physical copy and the audiobook, and always enjoy re-reading or listening to it again.

Good book, disappointing performance.

I love older Mercedes Lackey books, and I like the humor and wittiness in Reserved for the Cat a lot. Unfortunately, the audiobook performance is abysmal. Mirabai Galashan seems to have difficulty deciding how to read this book aloud. Her voice is too high, her intonation awkward, and most of her sentences end in a high note as if to pause instead of in a low note as if to stop. The emotions that she potrays often do not match the situation potrayed in the book, or the emotions of the characters whose lines she's reading. The pace of the reading is inconsiatent, as if Ms.

I liked it.

A Princess of Landover is the sixth volume in one of my favorite fantasy serieses after Lord of the Rings and The Belgariad. For years my only exposure to these novels came via the Library of COngress and their Talking Book program. Unfortunately the narrator of those versions wasn't the greatest as far as I was concerned. He gave characters different voices but not much in the way of expression.

Then about eight years ago I discovered the commercially available audiobook versions, produced by Brilliance Audio and narrated by Dick Hill. These versions were far better, not merely because Dick Hill's voices were more varied (although I will agree that he makes Abernathy sound rather like the Geico Gecko), he also brings emotion to the presentation. When characters cried I thought he actually was crying about something on several occasions. Others may not agree but I generally have liked everything I've heard from Mr. Hill.

But unfortunately I'm not fond of abridged books, even if I'm rereading a book I've already read before. So I was a little disappointed when I purchased the then five novels in the Magic Kingdom of Landover series and found them to be abridged. Fortunately most of what was cut from the programs was unimportant.

Now, however, they're all available from the same company and done by the same narrator, but in unabridged form. The sixth novel takes up five years after the end of Witch's Brew. Mistaya, the daughter of Ben Holiday and Willow, king and queen of Landover, has just been expelled from a women's college preparatory school on Earth and returns to Landover. As punishment, Ben charges her to reconstruct Libris, the long-abandoned royal library. Though initially reluctant, Mistaya quickly befriends a mysterious young man named Tom and discovers a sinister plot in the works that could spell the end of Landover.

Yeah but in a few years when i redo the series. I love it.

Any of the previous landover books. Has a little mystery, intrigue, and suspense.

What about Dick Hills performance did you like?

Dick was great, He's done all the Landover books and has it it down pat. I originally read these in print and he really brought the characters to life. Well done voices for all the characters. Made it enjoyable.
