A continuous joy

There are very few books that deserve to be revised. Guards Guards, the first of the Night Watch Discworld novels is one of these few. With the classic performance of Nigel Planer it felt like bounching into an old and beloved friend with whom one has lost contact many years ago. Planer's voice and the late Sir Terry Pratchett's "serious" humour still makes an excellent escape from the rush and turmoil of everyday life. This audiobook is a golden oldie to be revisited every once and again.

Nigel Planer is amazing! The voices you will hear are the same you've imagined in your head, when reading paper book. I enjoy Pratchett again, but this time on the street, in subway, everywhere.

A great book if you've never read/listened to a discworld book before. Funny as hell with a solid emotional core.

I really enjoyed this audio book. The narator did his best to really place you in unbelievable adventure, with characters that are very easy to identify.

Where does Guards! Guards! rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It is definitely one of the better books. It rolls along with the occasional laugh out loud segment and frequent guffaws.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Its hard not to like all the characters. Pratchett develops his characters as if they were real people. I do like Sam Vimes though. He's an interesting mix of the alcoholic veteran and the suddenly energetic action hero - surprising himself as much as the reader.

What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Inflection, accents and delivery pace all bring the characters to life and the events are vested with excitement you might not discover just reading it yourself. There are very few readers I think I'd trust with a Discworld book and Nigel is great.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not especially. This is a light tale that gallops along exuding fun, humour and wrapped around a cracking good story.

Any additional comments?

Yes. As much as I admire Nigel Planer, I do wish the voice he used for Sam Vimes had suited the character a little better. The voice is a little nasal and somewhat dull. Vimes is many things but he's certainly not stupid.

A great voice for street mime...

A poor poor poor representation of a remarkable Authors work. A brilliant, witty and entertaining edition from disc-world reluctantly, sorrowfully, painfully dragged down the blackboard of DEATH's niece with the DEATH OF RATS digging in its wee claws for maximum effect. The narrator presents with horrible attempts at character voices, sometimes bordering on unintelligible. Close to mono-tonish, with out actually qualifying AS mono-tone, alas even failing to successfully fail at that... an insomniacs biggest fantasy, was only the words of the story that kept me interested. 3 star average rating, 5 for story, 1 for narration. Sincere apologies to any and all that disagree.

One of the less wonderful discworld novels and reading it like children story definetly doesn't help.

Rincewind returns

Through a million to one chance Rincewind manages to escape the Dungeon Dimensions and finds himself under the control of Eric, a teenage-Demonologist. Eric's only desires are to be ruler of the disc, have the most beautiful woman and live forever. No one is more amazed than Rincewind himself when the wishes seem to get fulfilled, however, with unexpected side-effects...

Pratchett delivers as always a fantastic story taking dozens of jibes at world history such as the Trojan War or modern Management methods. Even though the story is short (by Terry's standards) it is very fast paced and never gets boring :).

Quezovercoatl is displeased

This is the most disappointing Discworld book yet. I personally have only read the first 13 books, but this the only one I would recommend skipping.

great part of an epic

loved this book, just as wonderful as auidobook,. Stephen Briggs' narration of Terry pratchett's books is a s usual excellent, giving full life and humour to the books I love so much. wonderfully kept as unabridged, which is a must for me, with Stephen's lovely voice that smoothly and full of the wit and humour that leaps to mind when thinking of Terry pratchet books

Terry Pratchett writes so well, he is so funny and Stephen Briggs narrates so well, capturing all the funny bits perfectly. What a team!

I didn't notice how short this was until after I spent a credit on it. Would of been nice if it only cost half a credit.

One of the funniest Pratchett stories. Had me rolling with laughter at times.

I prefer Stephen Bigget's narrative but Nigel definitely performed with flying colour in Jingo.

Laughed out loud too many times to count

Exceptionally incisive, hilarious and a study of human nature at its best.

Loved it !

A must read for anyone that likes satire. A lot of the usual characters make an appearance.

The way he explains the concepts of war, of how 'different means dangerous' is just amazing. Of course you will be laughing all the way at the brilliant wit, fast paced plot so that you won't see the twists coming.

A suffering Vimes, a smug Vetinari, the always innocent Nobby and so much more !!

A book for the times

I am very glad I read this book now although I would have probably felt the same at any other point in our history, which is sad reflection on the constancy of xenophobia and jingoism. Listen to this book to see a reflection of our own ugly selves.

Another great book in the watch series with excellent narration by Nigel Planer as alway. These books always get me in a good mood.

One of the best

A hilarious book. I started laughing in a otherwise quite room in the middle of work, when it got near to the end. One of the best terry Pratchett books and my personal favourite thus far.

Overall a great book, read well but a few issues with accents.

I've read all of the Discworld series multiple times and I guess I have a pretty good understanding of all the characters nuances. Although Stephen Briggs did a good job narrating I think that some of the accents and inflections didn't live up to characters. Sam Vimes is a hardened street cop often compared to a Dirty Harry type but doesn't come across this way through the narration. Sgt. Colon sounds nothing like he should and even Carrot is not quite right. I understand it can't be easy to voice all the characters seamlessly but I think it's a must for such important roles.

Overall though I think that THUD is a fantastic story and I'd recommend this version for those who haven't read the hard copy.

The Somening Dark

I am a bit surprised that I am disappointed in this story. I feel that it is a bit rushed, do not get me wrong it still a good book, but it lacks something.

Review for indomitable

For me indomitable started on section 6. I didn't like that the chapters (sections) didn't have names,only numbers, so I had to search for terry brooks' book, but just like the rest of his series I was very happy with the story once I located it. It's a very short story that takes place two years after the wishsong book. If you like the book series you should give this one a shot, I don't think you will be disappointed, or at least I wasn't.

Terry Brooks did it again with a great story!

Diana Gabaldon - sorry, lost interest quickly. Was not interested in hearing a story with a bi-sexual character so never got past the background part of the book.

Great Story - Terrible Production!

For the Pratchett fan - especially the City Watch books - this is another great story. It's the second Nigel Planer narration I've heard and I'm just not a huge fan. He's fine, but he's not Stephen Briggs and he has a tendency to voice many of his characters in a way that makes them sound a bit slow and dim witted.

I must endorse the comments of a previous reviewer that the production quality is truly awful - terrible sound quality and frequent jump cuts / continuity errors. It's bad enough I think Audible should clean it up or put it on permanent deep discount.

What didnt you like about Nigel Planers performance?

While Nigel Planer's normal narrator voice is quite alright, I honestly don't like the voices he gives the different characters. They more or less sound nasal and slightly stupid all of them, save for a few ones.

However, his narration pales in comparison to the audio editing, which is plagued by hissing background noise and sudden variations in sound levels.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, without a doubt. But only because it's a Terry Pratchett story.

This is one of my favourite books

The book is lovely, Sam is a big man in my life after hearing about him. The watch is a place I would love to work if I had bin on Discworld.

Wonderful performance to a brilliant, hilarious story! Loved every minute of it! The colourful, creative characters were given such vibrant life through the reader's amazing skill.

Peter Kenny is great!

I've taken a break from this book due to work, kids and life getting in the way but both Sapkowskis writing and Peter Kenny's performance have sucked me right back in. This book is arguably better than the previous one mainly due to the faster pace. But the story of the entire saga is amazing. I cannot wait for The Lady of the Lake in March!

So funny, you'll die!!!

Excellent take on the vampire mythos. Great and enjoyable. The pop culture references alone are worth the listen but the author tells a great story in the meantime. Well crafted, funny, reverent and believable. This is what life would truly be like if Vampires and other supernatural beings were real. The Narrator did an excellent job with the voices and the pace. Great book.

THATS ONE BAD VAMPIRE!!!!!

Wow!! This book was hilarious. I have not quite read a vampire story like this one. This is Urban Fantasy meets Robyn Peterman(The fashionably dead series). I look forward to more in this series.. Eight awesome hours oh hilarity start to finish.

Its been a while since a book has been able to keep me chuckling through almost the entire book. C. T. Phipps manages to hit just the right glib tone in this book that had me constantly either shaking my head or outright laughing my butt off. The story in and of itself is some weird sort of love child between the Blade series and True blood. The main character is a vampire, shocker I know, but try not to get your hopes up for something too classy as when the book opens he works in a quick stop. As it carries on more characters are added in and while a few are in only a couple scenes I cant really point to any that feel two dimensional. Scattered throughout are a smattering of action scenes which also work well in their own right. The only nitpick I had that bothered me a touch is that there is a moment in the book where a flashback gives some insight to a character, in said flashback a minor character is named, but then afterwards that same character is referred to twice more as someone who the main character never even found out the name to. It was weird but hardly more than a momentary distraction in the scope of the overall book.

All in all I enjoyed the hell out of this book, possibly a bit too much as I ended up bingeing through the entire thing in one go. Then again if that isn't a high recommendation in and of itself I'm not sure how else to hype this book.

Hilarious and a Blast of a Book

Being a Vampire must suck... if you get my pun. Though this book would have you believe that vampires do not suck as much as they slurp since the heart helps push the blood out of the body. But, being a poor black vampire must be even worse. Enter the life of Peter Stone who has been exiled from New Detroit (a vampire mecca). He works a terrible job making terrible money.
