The Kushiel series in order

I have read all the books in this series...and I love all of them. Jacqueline Carey is an excellent author. Unfortunately, Audio books did not number her books, so it is hard to figure out what book to read first, or what order they are in. I have solved that oversight.

Won a New Fan!

I am first time reader of Jacqueline Carey. Naamah's Kiss, its narrator and audio production effortlessly delivered an historical fantasy epic. I tend to shy away from series of any kind, not confident as to which novel in a series to read first. I would have given 5 stars if Naamah's Kiss were a complete novel in unto itself. It's sequel, "Naamah's Curse", arrives to hardcover June 2010. (I am counting the days!)

Yes, the eroticism surprised me! I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. I prefer literary fiction, classics, stand alone fantasy and sci-fi, nonfiction and short stories. The few series I have read, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, I easily compare to Jacqueline Carey. There is palpable philosophy and religion in Carey's alternative history. The few negative reviews I see listed here I take no issue with, excepting that of Anne Flosnik's narration. Flosnik is brilliant! The narration is first person. She is spot on with her accents for each character. I especially liked the Breathing Lessons from an Asian Master, I compare these segments to guided meditations! As per the sexuality... Naamah is the "Aphrodite", the Desire Goddess of this realm. If one shies from explicit eroticism, perhaps Jacqueline Carey's other works would be a better fit.

Jacqueline Carey would be a talent sorely missed for all readers of fantasy genre.

I LOVED the book! It was a great read and a little unexpected. Morin is a fun character along with all the sub-characters who are vibrant. This is a MUST READ for anyone looking to get out of “normal” tales of magic.

Bad Queen, Good Queen, Warlord Prince

You should only consider getting this title if you're already a fan of the Black Jewels trilogy ("Daughter of the Blood," "Heir to the Shadows," and "The Queen of Darkness," hereafter referred to as BJT), and even then I wouldn't recommend "The Invisible Ring."

The BJT is a mix of magic, epic fantasy, sadistic evil, adventure, romance, and erotica (both romantic and BDSM). Its world is one of multiple planes (Terreile, Kaelaer, Hayll, and the Twisted Kingdom) and different races (winged humans, humans who live for centuries, regular humans, "black widows," and undead sorta vamps). Jewels are the source of magic, and the darker the jewel the more potent the magic. Women hold the dominant sexual power and evil queens enforce it by forging "rings of obedience" onto the anatomy of any powerful Warlord Prince they can get their hands on.

If you're still reading this after the above description, you might enjoy the BJT books, which are unique, intriguing, exciting, romantic, and often erotic. But "The Invisible Ring," a prequel to the BJT, is none of these.

The marvelous, fully developed characters of BJT are absent. Instead we have the callow Jared and a pretty young pre-queen who may, if Jared and his buddies can manage to save her from the hideously evil Red Queen Dorothea, develop into a full-fledged Grey-Jewelled Queen (grey jewels being pretty high-powered items in this world). Dorothea is the only major character from BJT who shows up (well, BJT' s hero Daemon has a cameo, but it's so pale you can overlook it). Dorothea's scenes are truly gruesome--she is one corrupt witch queen!--but mostly the book is just boring and trite, and very unlike the books of the trilogy.

P.S. The review of Invisible Ring by Tango is spot on. I have been meaning to post this "warning" review for a while, and her excellent summation has just beaten me to it!

Save Your Credit

Note: Although this is supposed to be a standalone novel, I don't believe anyone would be able to follow the story without reading the Black Jewels trilogy first. And, if you read this book first, you may never read another Anne Bishop book so don't start Black Jewels here.

I really enjoyed the original Black Jewels trilogy so I didn't worry much that there were no reviews of this prequel and picked it up with high expectations. What a disappointment - absolutely pathetic. I would normally return a book this bad, but I wanted to post a review just to warn others. I now realize why there were no reviews even though there are many people who have read it.

Another chapter to Imriel

I have read all the books preceding to this one. Carey is a detailed author so if at this point you haven't found that out or this is your first - beware. The story does not reveal itself in an hour and end in the next.

Carey weaves intricate lines of lineage, history, and associations to create another masterpiece.

The sensuality, the adventure, and dedication was wonderful. I felt like the listener literally grew up a little more with each of Imriel's years and experiences. I did also enjoy Simon Vance - just wait till Kushiel's Mercy to see his talent bloom even more.

Pretty good

Justice is a good book, but there is very little of some of the characters I loved from the last book. There are some new, good characters though. This is not the best written book I've ever read and it drags a bit at times. Plus, the lead can be so whiney. Yes, you're a tragicly tortured boy... we get it. Despite this, there are some excellent scenes and the love story makes you root for the romance. All in all, worth the read if you've got nothing better to do.

Disappointing

The narration of this story was wonderful, I love Simon Vance! But, even under his excellent narration, the story line was weak and inconsistent, sounding more like a shallow romance novel and much less like the intricate adventure stories that preceded it. This book was not nearly as interesting as the previous books, and in some parts was painfully predictable, cliche, and sappy. Phedre and Joscelin are barely a part of this story, with Phedre coming off more like Mary Poppins and Joscelin spouting an inane comment here and there in her wake. She has none of her whit or cunning and poor Joscelin has practically been neutered he's so bland and unimposing. And what happened to Hyacinthe! Why bring him into the story at all if you're not going to develop his character somewhat? It's just way more irritating than interesting, and it certainly doesn't help the story.

Series Finding It's Stride

The war promised in the previous book does come to pass. Familiar faces return and a few lesser known characters are explored in more detail. Story is split between 4-5 major factions as the action becomes more diverse.

This book seems more "comfortable" with itself and hits the mark promised by the basic premise of the series. Descriptions become a little less repetitive and some characters get a lot more interesting.

Narration is good and addresses some of the more common complaints about pronunciation found in previous books. Could stand to have a slightly longer moment of silence when a scene ends dramatically and before the next scene begins some time later.

Worthwhile reading.

Great Listen

A proper end to the first part of the change. I have listened to 7 books in this series and can't wait for the next one "The Sword of the Lady" which is supposed to be released in September 2009 in Audio format. I hope Audible.com has it as soon as it is available. Rudy Mckensie has the best of Mike Havel and Juniper Mckensie and keeps the story line moving ahead. I highly reccomend this series.

The end of a Great trilogy

I really enjoyed this, the third book in the series. If you enjoyed the first two, you will enjoy this one. The author wraps up the trilogy nicely and writes one of the best 'death of a hero' scenes I have read.

Great series but.....

Repeated detailed descriptions of the local plants, animals, food, clothing, and locality get a bit tedious and detracts from from a really good story.

The Story Continues...YES!

I really enjoyed "Dies the Fire" and just had to know what happens to the characters I have come to know and care about. I was fascinated with how human nature and individual character responds to a complete change to everything we know and rely on to survive in our modern day world. "Meeting at Corvallas" is the next chapter to the chaos of the first book, and captured my attention and imagination, however the story seemed to drag out to the end. Oh, wait, it's not over, and now I have to get the next book to finally get closure to the story. When do I get my new credits.....Arrrrrg! I can't wait that long!

Fantastic book with a great big BUT...

Western and fantasy all mixed together? I wasn't sure I'd like it but it sounded different and I am tired of same old same old, so I gave it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! The characters are interesting, the story grabs you, and the narrator is excellent. And here's where the big but comes in. I finished it and immediately came to Audible to buy the next book because this is the first in the sequel. But...there isn't a next book. This was published in 2008 and if there has been a sequel published, Audible doesn't have it. And this book does not have an ending. It just stops, waiting for the non-existent sequel to pick up and carry on. I'm still glad I read it but I think it should be made clear that there is no ending and most likely will never be one.

Good book, great reading

The long wait for a new Emma Bull has been rewarded; 'Territory' is well-written, humorous, sharp-edged, and much more historically accurate than the beguiling preface would suggest. It is very definitely the first part of something; it's not just that it leaves many, many plot points unresolved, to be addressed in the subsequent book(s), it's also that it does more to build complexity in character and relationships than to provide a really gripping story arc that can stand alone. There is action, adventure, drama, humor, and things changing and developing, but it's not paced like a stand-alone novel.

Enticing

I am a fan of this series, I found this book enjoyable to listen to on way to work. It is a great stress reducer. Dragons, Wizards, perils, dangerous enemies, what more to ask for.

Yet another success.

IT was alittle less than a year since Ben Holiday and is friends thwarted the plans of the treacherous wizard Meeks and, in so doing, discovered the secret of the mysterious black Unicorn. Now, Questor Thews, the ill-trained court wizard, announces that he has finally discovered a spel that will return Abernathy, the court scribe, to his human form after more than twenty years of being a talking dog. There is a catch, however. Questor needs an object to serve as a catalyst for the magic, something to separate the man from the dog in Abernathy. Unfortunately the only object close at hand that can serve that purpose is the medallion of the kings of Landover. Despite the risks, Ben reluctantly agrees to lend the medallion to the cause. All goes well until Questor inadvertently breathes the magic dust of his spell and sneezs, causing Abernathy to vanish, taking the medalion with it. Things become more complicated when a mysterious bottle appears in the spotwhere Abernathy once stood. It's quickly discovered that the bottle is in fact the prison of an evil genie-like demon who corrupts those it serves even while granting their wishes. The bottle, it's discovered, is the property of Michel Ard Ri, the exiled prince of landover who departed with the wizard Meeks. Once again I find little fault with Dick Hill's narration. It's easy to keep track of hat character is speaking and each has their own personality. Hill even does justice to emotional scenes. This was definitely worh my time.

I love these books and the narrator!

Just as good as his other ones...I couldn't turn it off.

War has come to Discworld ... again.

Ok, I have to admit I surprised myself. I had bought this book in an airport somewhere travelling from there to here. I read it and enjoyed it but that was all. Of all Terry Pratchett's books, I viewed one on video and bought two paper versions, the other twenty plus have all been audio books. I have always thought in the past that my own imagination was far more vivid than a movie or an audio. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie my version way, way better and it made some sort of sense. Now I have listened to this same book read by Stephen Briggs and concede that he, Nigel Planer and Tony Robinson bring Pratchett's books to life much better than I ever could in my own mind.

The stories always make a point and always speak to the human condition and what fools we are.

Buy it, enjoy. Don't laugh too hard or the people in the car stopped beside you or that poor person next to you on the train will think you are having some sort of weird seizure.

Save trees, listen to a Discworld saga.

Pratchett and Briggs: can you go wrong?

Seriously, people, Terry Pratchett's work is one of the great under-rated treasures of the English language. And whenever his long-time collaborator, Stephen Briggs, is handling the narration, you know you're in for a treat.

Once upon a time I saw myself as far too highbrow and learned to expose myself to books with trolls, vampires, and werewolves in them. If you, too, shudder at the thought, Dear Reader, then I must tell you now - in the case of Terry Pratchett's work you are wrong in your assumptions, to the point that you may have to consider the possibility that they're irrational prejudices!

Certainly, some of the early books are exemplars of rather more conventional fantasy, albeit with a few decent jokes thrown in, but later works constitute a wonderful, always empathic, satire of human society, and are strongly Humanist in their sympathies, despite the various fantastic species that gad about in them.

Hard not to love Commander Vimes

The Vimes story lines are always Prachett's best work. This is funny, clever and exciting. This was the first time I had heard Stephen Briggs reading and it was a bit off putting for me but he performed magnificently. Plus dwarves, and vampires *and* werewolves, how can you not love these books?

I would not recommend reading this without first reading the other city watch books. You'll miss out on all those little "inside jokes" peppered throughout. No one likes missing out on inside jokes.

Vintage Pratchett

What did you love best about The Fifth Elephant?

The story was great, and as usual Stephen Briggs did his exemplar best. Terry Pratchett at his best. I have read and reread this story so many times, but I find there is always something new I have missed in past readings.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fifth Elephant?

The chase of the Werewolves, you know Vimes is going to get out of it, but you never quite know how, until he does.

Which character as performed by Stephen Briggs was your favorite?

Being Welsh myself, I love Stephen Briggs's Dwarf's, he is so good with the accent, I could almost believe he was born next door to me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I always try to make Terry Pratchett's books last as long as I can, so I limit myself(if I can) to three hours a day, mostly though I just keep on listening spellbound.

Good story, poor quality

I love S. Briggs, and I love Pratchett books, especially when read by Briggs, but for some reason this one was really... choppy. There were glitches in the file, through both parts, where it would blank out, skip or whatever, and often I'd miss a word or two. Disappointing for such a great story!!

briggs brings pratchets stories alive an draws you into the world that pratchet masterfully devised. well worth a listen.

Formulaic Pratchett... but worth reading.

Not Pratchett's best, but a very good read. If you like his work, you will like this one.

Not genius, but pretty good

Nigel Planer isn't my favourite Terry Pratchett reader - I think Stephen Briggs does the best job of interpreting Discworld's regular cast of characters - but he's pretty good, and the story here is kind of interesting, if you're the sort of person who likes to think about what happens to you after you die. And for some reason I found the whole concept of 'Mort' (I had never realized that 'Mort' is both a nerdy-sounding first name and a term for death, which is decidedly not nerdy-sounding) very clever and amusing.

Worth getting if you're a Discworld or Terry Pratchett fan.

Solid story and good narration

However the audio quality is quite hairy, like a caveman out for dinner at a Michelin star restaurant before the invention of scissors.

Great audio

Nigel is a very good narrator for these books and does a fantastic job in this one. Easily understood and with great inflection.

the book itself is funny and keeps you listening. Although the narration is quite good, the recording quality is quite bad and inconsistent, especially when changing from one chapter to the other.

My favourite Discworld novel.

Terry Pratchett is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant minds. He never fails to bring out a laugh, always encourages the reader (or listener) to think, and provides us with a colourful outlook on life and literature. He is sorely missed.

Happy I gave it a chance, despite other reviews

I was a little worried after reading the other reviews here on Audible that found fault with the dramatization provided by the narrator and also one review that found fault with the audio quality itself. I am glad that I am a completist and gave it a try anyway. If you are familiar with the other witch-centric books narrated by Celia Imrie, you will not be surprised by the style of dramatization here. I found that it gave life to the book and greatly prefer this to a flat reading. The audio quality was just fine, too, with no static or background noises that I noticed. I am sad that some people might pass over listening to this book, based on the negative reviews here, since I think this is one of the best Discworld novels so far in the series in terms of plot and characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Celia Imrie?

Steven Briggs without a doubt.

Celia Imrie's male characters all sound about ten years old. Some of her character's voices are hard to understand because she tries to change the characteristics of her voice instead of using different accents. Her style of reading is better suited to children's books.

This narrator has a good grip on Pratchett!

While others found the dramatisation of the narrator a bit over the top, I enjoyed it immensely. I was disappointed the rest of the witches series has not been narrated by Celia Imrie. The voices and very hard to verbalise phrases and humour were nicely balanced.

As for the story - if you're a Pratchett fan, you will love it. If you're not, you probably will be once you've listened to this story.

Mrs Imrie's voice does not agree with me at and actually ruined the listening experience for me. Although she really has a very nice voice I found her interpretation of most of the important characters ridiculous and irrating. One of my, normally favourite characters, Nanny Ogg now sounds like a stuttering, retarded drunk and the Duchess and Duke are sometimes very hard to understand. I am an avid TP fan and read (and re-read) all of his books. Also, I thoroughly enjoy listening to the audio versions of the books. They simply never tire. But this one, will remain on the shelf for a very long time, before I feel inclined to listen to it again. I would definitely buy an unabridged version read by Nigel or Stephen. Mrs Imrie's voice, I think, is better suited for a different kind of audiobook.

Fine story. Terrible narrator.

I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett audiobooks - I think I have almost all of them from Audible now. But to be honest, I couldn't even finish this one. Celie Imrie is a fine actor, but I don't think she understands that the Discworld books are supposed to be funny, lighthearted and a little absurdist, even when they're dealing with 'darker' themes.
