Hello, beauts. I am so beyond excited to finally share with you my big secret.
This audiobook is about my journey from start to finish, right up to what I'm looking for in the future. What an adventure it has been to write! I have laughed, cried, cringed and beamed with pride recounting all the crazy stories I have put into it.
The 'Love' chapter needed to be completely rewritten halfway through, which was toughbut it worked a bit like therapy and has taught me so much about myself. I pinch myself all the time over how fortunate I have been. Not only was I born into the most magical family and given the most unique childhood - being part of a foster family full of love - but six years ago I landed a place on a little BAFTA award-winning show called TOWIE (I know, six years - crazy, right?).
Through it I have grown from a quiet, vulnerable teenager who was honestly a bit lost in life into an entrepreneur, fund-raiser and worldwide adventurer, all before my 22nd birthday. Alongside my story I've shared everything I now know that I wish I had back then, from dating rules to makeup routines and the amazing workout that got me bikini ready for my TOWIE return in 2014. I've even packed it full of my favourite inspirational quotes, recipes, and photos (the good, the bad and the ugly!). So fingers and toes crossed that you like it. ;)
Live, Laugh, Love, Always, Lydia. Written and read by Lydia Bright.

    An Inspirational Must Read
This is an excellent book which I'd recommend to women who either already have their own established business or are planning to start one up. Lydia's honesty about how she learnt on the job is very inspiring and there's a lot to learn from her throughout this book
In addition to this there's brilliant fitness tips and recipes and it's also nice to get to know the real Lydia who is very different to the one we see on TOWIE. Highly recommended

    Title: Mind of a Survivor
Subtitle: What the wild has taught me about survival and success
    Author: Megan Hine
    Narrator: Megan Hine
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-18-17
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Surviving in the wild takes a great deal of strength. Often faced with frozen tundra, sweltering deserts, humid jungles, perilous mountains and fast-flowing rivers, Megan Hine is no stranger to perilous conditions. Whilst leading expeditions and bushcraft survival courses, and in her work on television shows such as Bear Gryll's Mission Survive and Running Wild, she has explored the corners of the globe in pursuit of adventure.
Faced with the toughest of conditions - bad weather, lack of food and being in the presence of predators - is the ultimate test of character, and often the biggest challenge to overcome is in the head. In these situations the human brain is simultaneously the greatest asset and biggest liability. Not everyone is suited to the great outdoors, and when danger calls many aren't as well equipped to survive; no amount of top-of-the-range kit will save you if you don't have the right frame of mind.
Here Megan Hine examines the human ability and instinct for survival, showing us how others have developed the attitudes and attributes to thrive in the most dangerous situations and how those same attitudes and attributes help them confront problems and obstacles at work and at home. Being chased through the jungle by armed opium farm guards, abseiling past bears and lighting fires with tampons - Megan has seen and done it all. In Mind of a Survivor, she takes you along for a series of life-and-death adventures and shows you what happens to people when they are pushed to their limits. Inspirational rather than instructional, Mind of a Survivor examines the human ability and instinct for survival, sharing the life tools that Megan uses and showing how they can as easily be applied to more domestic everyday life - from careers to relationships, from overcoming adversity to decision making.
Filled with Megan's own experiences, Mind of a Survivor is packed full of adventure and can help people survive in any situation and cope with whatever life throws at them.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book powerfully uncovers the layers of where people draw strength from in their time of crisis - moving and inspiring." (Bear Grylls)

    No science but great story
Although there is little science in this book, more a collection of Megan's stories feom her short life. but she's already experienced more than most of us will in 100 years and her writing is very thought provoking. amazing book and well worth a read.
    A truly inspiring listen throughout!
A truly inspiring listen! Makes you ask questions about yourself. A very candid performance throughout!
Great ideas shared in this book
Worth reading and understanding how to deal with multi cultural and multi behavioral situations in a remote location.
An unusual view of that much-used word- 'survival'
    Any additional comments?
This is a fairly honest look at survival in outdoor pursuits, mostly in very remote terrain. There is a bias towards providing safety for tv film crews whilst filming survival 'gameshows', as this seems to be a big part of Megan's working life, along with leading/instructing. The tv crew stories ('get that footage at almost any cost' is the attitude) left me with an even less favourable view of this kind of tv than before, I'm afraid, though the stories of near-death situations are pretty gripping.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-16-17
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Speed Girl is the true story of how aerospace engineer turned race-car driver Janet Guthrie triumphed over hostility, chauvinism - even sabotage - to become the first woman to finish the Indianapolis 500.
It's the 1970s, and the fight for women's rights is gaining speed. In the sports world, Billie Jean King is breaking gender barriers on the tennis court. Janet Guthrie doesn't consider herself a "women's libber," but to racing's good ol' boys, she's a threat. When Guthrie makes a bid for Indy in 1976, the other drivers slam her mercilessly, even suggesting she's really a man. Fans heckle her, hoping she'll crash. Guthrie smiles through the pain and qualifies for Indy in 1978. And even a broken wrist and a rift on her team can't derail her - she finishes in the top ten.
Bestselling author Stephan Talty's riveting biography brings Guthrie's passion and persistence vividly to life. With gripping realism, Speed Girl immerses listeners in the untold story of the woman who came to Indy a racer and left a trailblazer.

I also LOVED the movies and beautiful pictures
An incredible story of determination and perseverance about the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Less a story about racing, and more a tale of triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds. Janet Guthrie was a former aerospace engineer, and she was almost 40 by the time she got the opportunity to compete. A true and unsung American hero, akin to Sally Ride or Billy Jean King.
I also LOVED the movies and beautiful pictures. Really added something different and exciting to the book. The cartoon that came to life was great!
    Good racer, good for women
Janet Guthrie literally paved the road for other women racers. I wish she could have gotten more support. I remember her races.
    Amazing race story
Fascinating look at early female racing history. Throughly enjoyed this book and Janetâs amazing story. Very inspiring and attention grabbing story. She is an amazing pioneer.
Very good. Shows what determination and pursuit of your dreams can bring. A stiff uphill climb but worth it.
Very good.. Shows what determination and pursuit of your dreams can bring. A stiff uphill climb but worth it. Outstandin
    "A" for effort
I am a "Title IX" kid. I was, and am, a Janet Guthrie admirer. I also worked as a Paramedic at a NASCAR track for over 25 years. I get it. Been there, done that. My first years in EMS and the racing world were filled with sexist pranks, rhetoric, and outright hate from both male peers and race teams. Ms. Guthrie was among my touchstones when it got really bad. And, I thank her for her vision, courage, and for trying to get society to understand that wanting to do something considered "traditionally" male does not make a woman a threat to testosterone. She's just a person who wants to do what makes her happy.
Having said that, I was slightly disappointed in the pedantic nature of the writing style, and the lack of depth. OTOH, having met and worked ON a number of the other drivers mentioned therein, I am glad they were either smart enough not to voice their Neanderthal opinions in my presence, or to have manned up and "grown" their own over time.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-26-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
In the World War II and post-war era, the figure of the male hero who was previously presented as an invulnerable, single-minded, and to a larger degree monolithic and unknowable warrior, began to develop into a more multi-faceted and intriguing character in the most important Hollywood films. This was to signal, and in a sense impel the same change in American society that has always mirrored itself after its cinematic models. Much like the era of Austen and the Bronte sisters, the American hero softened to resemble the older British one, vulnerable and uncertain, but still passionate and determined.
In Edward Montgomery Clift, the public not only discovered an unusually gifted actor, but a persistent and stoical anti-authoritarian, an extreme non-conformist in a conformist age and a personal enigma who has remained the target of prying Hollywood reporting since his death. Described as the first "method" actor in Hollywood, he was to co-create and develop this lonely, unwilling, and uncertain American hero, filled with deep personal ambiguities, a conflicting will, vulnerable and sensitive. In his eventual arrival to Hollywood following a lengthy period of resistance, he not only embodied this new male model, but inspired the next generation of fascinating characters who didn't "fit in", such as friends Marlon Brando and James Dean. He added to this screen persona a sexual dualism that, while not apparent on the surface, changed the way leading men were perceived by the late 1940s.
A first-rate stage actor, Clift approached Hollywood on his own terms, and permanently upset the ruling order of the studio-to-star system, in which long-term contracts guaranteed corporate ownership of the artist, and in which casting was often based more on familiarity than suitability or acting skills. Obscuring Clift's evident gifts as a special actor of his generation is the persistent ruminating on his personal tortures, not only as a drug addict and alcoholic, but as a sexually split identity playing the handsome leading man on the screen while unable to find a haven in American society in his private time. The combination of these forces shortened Clift's career and life considerably, despite some of his finest performances being filmed in a state of near delirium and mental collapse. Somehow able to tap into his extraordinary gifts at the lowest moments, he struggled through his final films, evoking success when he should have been undergoing treatment. He even secured a fourth Oscar nomination for a 10-minute scene that was entirely improvised, as he was unable to remember a single line of the script. He was, at the last, a great American leading man who was, at the same time, virtually unemployable.
Among the hardest men to know in the Hollywood industry, Clift was nevertheless treated with affection by most of his fellow actors who simply called him Monty, as he had been called his whole life.

    Publisher's Summary:
An intense and inspiring story of sporting triumph, from World, Commonwealth and National racing champion and Olympic silver medalist Lizzie Armitstead.
On the eve of the 2016 Olympic Games, the biggest moment of her life, Lizzie Armitstead's career was thrown into turmoil. After being cleared to ride the Games at the final hour following a successful court appeal to overturn an alleged missed drugs test, the ensuing leak and backlash threatened to engulf her. Now, for the first time, she tells her story and reveals how she went from world champion and darling of Team GB road cycling to one of the most scrutinised athletes in British sport - how it happened, why it happened and how Lizzie cleared her name and came out fighting.
In Steadfast Lizzie Armitstead takes the listener to the heart of the most demanding of endurance sports and the challenges faced by one of its most gifted competitors: from sexism and the fight for equality to doping and the incredible sacrifices required to self-coach herself to world titles.
From the rolling hills of Yorkshire through to the treacherous climbs of the Vista Circuit in Rio de Janeiro - through setbacks, life lessons and ups and downs of a professional life in cycling - Steadfast is an intense and inspiring story of sporting triumph.

    Great, but slow start
Would you listen to Steadfast again? Why?
yes, women in cycling need more support
What was one of the most memorable moments of Steadfast?
    account of the rainbow jersey
What about Lizzie Armitstead and Katy Sobey s performance did you like?
the whole book was great except the beginning. I don't care about her WADA admin story. I have a job that if I screw up once I loose my license and I am out of a job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    nothing extreme
    Any additional comments?
The beginning is very slow and I had no interest in her WADA stuff, but everything after is great, really great. Katy talks too soft for me to listen to on the bike. I like to listen to these while on the bike, and I kept loosing my place in the story.
Lifting the lid on team GB ladies cycling
I must confess that I do not really follow cycling, until I saw Lizzie Armistead on the news regarding this book I could not have told you anything about her, though the idea piqued my interest.
This is an interesting book about the ladies side of competitive cycling, whilst one big part of the book focuses on a tough period of time in Lizzie's life when there was a false doping allegation against her, the main essence of the book lifts the lid on the sport generally and the lack of support the ladies team receives when compared to the men.
This was an eye-opener, when she explains the vast difference in funding and even the availability of dedicated coaches in the sport for the ladies team, moreover the occasional disregard for her health and welfare and that of the other members of the team. It was also quite stark to realise that like many other female athletes she would so often be judged on her appearance rather than by her achievements as a sportsperson.

    Title: Legends of Hollywood
Subtitle: The Life of Rudolph Valentino
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Doron Alon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-05-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Everything about Rudolph Valentino, from his body to the characters he played, was exotic. His career may have been abbreviated by his premature death at the age of 31, but Valentino popularized the (somewhat racist) stereotype of the "Latin lover" in Hollywood, and even his name was markedly more out of the ordinary than those of other actors. In an era dominated by hyper-masculine actors like Douglas Fairbanks, or comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Valentino had a more ethnic and mysterious appeal, and he was lusted after by women to a degree that remains unsurpassed in the industry. The extent to which he captivated America can be seen in the response to his death; after passing away from a perforated ulcer in 1926, Ashton Trice and Samuel Holland note that his funeral "was one of the pop culture events of the century", and devastated women are alleged to have committed suicide out of heartbreak.
If Valentino's public persona was exotic, his personal life and background were no less fantastic, to the extent that it rivaled the improbable narratives of his movies. While he was identified as a Latin American in his films, Rudolph was actually born in Italy, the descendant of French and Italian heritage. The circuitous path that saw him reach the United States, and subsequently the film industry, is replete with outrageous good fortune. Even at an early age, Valentino was a dreamer, but there was no way that he could have anticipated the level of success he would achieve not long after landing in Ellis Island in the winter of 1913.

Whew! What a mouthful for a complete name. The man lead an interesting (if short) life as well as that of his family whose mother was forced to eat rats at one time so as to avoid starvation (yuck!) Called a poser and made sport of at times (sometimes other men who wore their hair in a similar fashion being referred to as "Vaselinos") yet able to rise above it and come across as a man of great distinction in the end. I loved this quote of his "I am merely the canvas on which women paint their dreams." I most always find these short biographies of people from Charles River Editors to be both informative and interesting and this one was no different. Very good book!

Be careful what you wish for...
Valentino was probably one of the most misunderstood people around at that time.
Born in Italy he come here as a young man, and like a lot of immigrants in those days
held a variety of jobs, eventually teaching dancing which led him to wealthier people
    therefore better connections.
All of his movies starting in 1921 were silent, he was known as The Latin Lover. Due to
his Mediterranean complexion he was not to well liked in Hollywood or by other men.
I am writing a book here, not my intention but this man lived a short but interesting life,
    died at age 31..
A good subject and well written Charles Rivers Editors.

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From the Emmy-winning writer and creator of All My Children, One Life to Live, and Loving, a memoir of her trailblazing rise to the top of the television industry, including behind-the-scenes stories from some of the most beloved soaps of all time.
Before there was Erica Kane, Adam Chandler, or Victoria Lord, there was Agnes Nixon, a young girl who dreamed up stories for paper dolls. Those tales she imagined - ones filled with ambitions, rivalries, and romances - would soon echo her own path to success. In a memoir filled with as much drama as the soaps she penned, Nixon shares her journey as daughter of a broken marriage who fought back against her father's wish that she take over the family burial garments business, overcame the heartbreak of losing her fiancé in WWII, and later became one of the most successful names in the TV industry.
Fans of Nixon's greatest creations, All My Children and One Life to Live, will delight at Nixon's own incredible life as well as the behind-the-scenes insight she lends to daytime's most popular programs. Nixon will share the inspiration behind and casting of the iconic character Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci; the story bible for All My Children, and how it became lost and then locked away in a drawer for many years; and how Nixon positioned ABC to become the media giant it is today, despite pushback from her male counterparts. This candid glimpse behind the curtain of the soap opera industry will charm soap fans and story lovers alike.
With a foreword written and read by Carol Burnett.
    Critic Reviews:
"I owe my career to Agnes Nixon, who was not only a brilliant creator and writer, but also my friend. My Life to Live is full of wonderful, evocative stories from her life and career that even I hadn't heard. And in typical Agnes fashion, her storytelling is full of humanity, social relevance and delicious humor! I know that her legions of fans will treasure it as much as I do." (Susan Lucci)
"Aggie Nixon is the only person I've ever known whom I didn't say awful things about. And much to my dismay, her memoir did nothing to change that. Unforgivable." (Larry David)
"[Agnes's] career wasn't easy to come by.... We know she won, but the story of her ups and downs make this book a true page-turner." (Carol Burnett, from the foreword)

If you loved the soap opera medium like I did, then I would recommend this book more as a history lesson as to how the genre came about. It talks about how there is still a need for soap operas today's day and age.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Learning about Agnes Nixon's life was a treat. I didn't know much about her other than she was a creator and pioneer for two iconic soaps. It was fascinating to learn how she came up with some of her storylines and her characters. But, so much was left to be desired because I wanted to know more about All My Children and One Life to Live in greater detail. For example, there was little to no mention of Erika Slezak in the book.
