    Publisher: Charles River Editors

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the events have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take four years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it was, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the people and places that shaped the course of the conflict ever since.
Much about the war remains controversial over 150 years later, and that includes the extent and nature of the spying that took place on both sides. Thus, it is only fitting that the wars most famous spy, the Confederate sympathizer Isabella Maria Boyd, is one of those people in American history who is as much myth as reality. Part of this is because she lived in an era that is still heavily imbued with a sense of nostalgia and myth, but her own personality is also heavily to blame, for she was what might in modern parlance be called a drama queen; since she was known for serial exaggerations in her work, historians are still trying to separate fact from fiction when it comes to her exploits. In the same vein, there was the matter of the people she surrounded herself with, many of whom needed a mythical figure to attach their last fading hopes for a Confederate victory to. They found such a person in Belle Boyd.
Boyds early life was in no way mythical, for she grew up in a lower middle class home in rural Virginia. While some of her more romantic biographers would describe her riding her horse into her parents' elegant dining room during a dinner party, it is unlikely that the Boyd family's home would accommodate a horse and rider within its four walls. Well on her way to fame before she left her teens, Boyd went on to be known to the French as "La Belle Rebelle", and to her own countrymen as "the Rebel Joan of Arc". Some, more impressed with her charms than her brains, named her "the Siren of the Shenandoah", while others gave her the less flattering nickname "Amazon of Secessia".
Ultimately, Boyd became a victim of her own thirst for fame. She found life after the war to be empty, and she spent the rest of her days trying to recapture the sense of satisfaction and excitement that she enjoyed during her brief years as a spy. It cost her two marriages and perhaps even her life; she was far from home when she died, still only in her mid-50s, leaving sympathizers to speculate that her heart gave out under the strain of trying to recapture lost glory.

Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy, but that's just ...
Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy, but that's just about where all the agreement ends. Was she an effective spy? Did she embellish her own story? Did she use sex to influence Union officers? The book addresses all of these issues throughout.Â
    Well-written book
Very interesting and informative book indeed.

This and Maria Riva's are the best books on Dietrich.
    Dietrich: the Lord of Discipline
Having read Maria Riva's book on her mother along with Dietrich's own autobiography, I didn't really expect any new revelations from this book -- but I couldn't have been more wrong! Mr. Bach is to be congratulated on his fascinating and respectable work honoring Miss Dietrich and her life. What a remarkable performer and a remarkable human being. We could sure use a few more like her in today's world. This is a must read for fans of the Lady and the Legend!!
marlene dietrichcould no put the book down
really enjoyed this book, great insight into a great movie star. however a little too long on the movie descriptions
A Legendary Life Wrapped in Purple Prose
Steven Bach is a good writer. His prologue to this exhaustive biography (more than 600 pages, with 477 being text and the rest being copious filmography and source notes) whetted my appetite for something really special. He shares with us that Marlene knew of his work on this book and tried to stop it. He tells us that she had a sister whose existence she denied. He advises of his relationship with Josef von Sternberg, and how it informs this work. I couldn't wait to start reading.
However, when I actually did start reading, there were some pages that were so dry that I felt I should stop to blow dust off of them. It isn't that Marlene didn't have a fascinating life, and it isn't that Bach hasn't gone to herculean lengths to chronicle that life. There are things here that he uncovered despite years of obfuscation on the part of Frau Dietrich. It's that he takes such a long time in telling us these things, in self-consciously "clever" prose, that by the time he gets to the point, I almost stopped caring about what that point was.
Further, it was clear to me that von Sternberg, Dietrich's Svengali, was an unpleasant piece of work. Bach is fairly transparent in detailing Sternberg's pettiness and downright cruelty in dealing with Marlene and others. In my personal opinion, many of her worst films were made with this man, but still I found myself reading a book that, for a segment of time, was more a biography of this director than of the lady I'd picked it up learn about. She denied herself health and wealth in order to do whatever he asked of her, and to save him from himself (to no avail), and yet he continually treated her like dirt. In 477 pages of biography, I was never able to discern why she allowed him to do so.
I have had great respect for Marlene Dietrich ever since reading Leatrice Gilbert Fountain's "Dark Star," about her father, John Gilbert. That book details his relationship with Marlene and how she attempted to care for him at the end of his life.

This is the truly remarkable life story of the notorious Ethel Livesey, a serial fraudster and confidence trickster who became a media sensation after she ran out on her society wedding in 1945 and later was arrested for obtaining goods by false pretences.
With a prologue by Ethel Livesey's granddaughter, this extraordinary tale of Australia's greatest fraudster is told for the first time in rich and fascinating detail.
    Critic Reviews:
"Too unbelievable [for] a work of non-fiction!" (Sunshine Coast Daily)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent! I was hooked!
Ethel was definitely fascinating. Yet I would best describe her as a narcissistic con artist, albeit a flamboyant one. She took advantage of people left right and center and couldn't tell the truth if she tried. She seemed to believe her own lies, she always saw herself as the victim and never acknowledged that she hurt others, not even in the abandonment of her own children. This deed being the most unscrupulous of them all.
Ethel obviously had mental/personality disorders combined with amazing storytelling and acting abilities. Her lies and performances charmed so many people into giving her what she wanted that I was shocked to hear of person after person falling under her spell. Was she really that convincing or was she just highly skilled at sniffing out exceptionally gullible people?
Mrs Livesey's misdeeds didn't always go smoothly nor did they go unnoticed by the law. I had to wonder how, in the end, she could possibly believe that her antics were worth continuing after all the trouble they would cause? Despite her saying that she wanted fresh starts ofteb, rehabilitation was beyond her.
I found the writing to be excellent as I was thoroughly engaged throughout. The narrator did a marvellous job too, using different voices for the vast array of characters. I did find the court proceedings outlined toward the end a little long winded and drawn out. Yet on the flip side this served to emphase just how complicated and difficult Ethel eventually made life for everyone, including herself.
I don't know how much, if any, creative licence was taken by the authour with this book because it is certainly pieced together with great detail. Nevertheless, I was totally captivated and must commend both the authour and the narrator for their exceptional work.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Olympics have long been the center of attention in the sports world, but perhaps no moment in the history of the games was as poignant as Jesse Owens' performance in Berlin in 1936. Owens would finish his career with four gold medals and become known as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history" (as his obituary in The New York Times put it), but nearly 80 years later, it's the context that has made his performance so memorable.
Owens was one of the greatest track athletes in the country in the 1930s, and while he was at Ohio State, he set three world records and tied another one within 45 minutes at a Big 10 meet in 1935, but hurdles on the track weren't as hard to clear as ones he had to deal with away from sports. As a young black man, he had to deal with entrenched racism across the country, from staying in segregated hotels to not being eligible for a sports scholarship.
In 1936, World War II was still a few years away, but Adolf Hitler was fully in control of Nazi Germany and hoped to use the Olympics as a showcase of the resurgent German nation. Internationally, Hitler's Germany was not yet a major concern to the vast majority of people unfamiliar with politics, nor were the domestic policies being carried out by the Nazis, but some still thought the United States should not even participate in the Olympics that year.
Of course, those who wanted to boycott the games could not have known what Jesse Owens had in store in Berlin. Given the unabashed racism of Hitler's regime, Jesse Owens' performance would end up being a rebuke of sorts to Hitler's notion of Aryan superiority, and an apocryphal legend has since sprung up that Hitler left the games early to avoid having to shake Owens' hand. While that reputed snub almost certainly did not occur, one Nazi official did note that Hitler "was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. People whose antecedents came from the jungle were primitive, Hitler said with a shrug; their physiques were stronger than those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from future games."
Owens' performance and the focus over whether Hitler snubbed him also obscured one of the most ironic aspects of Owens' life and sports career. In fact, while some were asserting that Hitler did actually congratulate Owens, others pointed out that Owens was treated better in Germany than he was back at home, where he had to ride in a freight elevator to a reception in his honor and didn't hear from President Roosevelt following the games. Owens himself pointed out, "Hitler didn't snub me - it was our president who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram." Indeed, Owens would find it hard to get by for the rest of his life, much of which was spent trying to capitalize off commemorations of his past exploits by resorting to gimmicks such as racing against horses. The situation led him to bitterly remark, "People say that it was degrading for an Olympic champion to run against a horse, but what was I supposed to do? I had four gold medals, but you can't eat four gold medals."

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
The year 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Damon Hill's coronation as Formula One world champion. For the first time ever, he tells the story of his journey through the last golden era of the sport, when he took on the greats, including Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, and emerged victorious as world champion in 1996, stepping out of the shadow of his legendary father, Graham Hill.
Away from the grid, Watching the Wheels: My Autobiography is an astonishingly candid account of what it was like to grow up as the son of one of the country's most famous racing drivers. It also tells the unflinching story of dealing with the grief and chaos that followed his father's tragically early death in an aircraft accident in 1975, when Damon was 15 years old.
Formula One drivers have always been aware of their mortality, and the rush that comes with the danger of racing was as intoxicating for Hill as it had been for his father's generation, until he came face-to-face with catastrophe when his teammate, Ayrton Senna, was killed in 1994. Hill was faced with swirling emotions in light of the death of Senna, which was a defining moment for his generation of drivers, and for the first time ever Hill talks candidly about the impact that Senna had on his life, even as he watched his own son step into motor racing.
Courageously honest and hugely rewarding, Watching the Wheels is a return to the last golden era of F1 racing, whose image still burns ferociously for those who love the sport for what it reveals about human skill in the face of or near certain death.

    A Champion and a Gentleman
As a fan of Damon's back in the glory days of F1 it was humbling to be allowed to enjoy such a frank honest appraisal of his time in F1. It was fascinating to learn of his struggles in formula 1 within the context of the mental challenges he has been put through. From the years leading up to his father's tragic accident right the way through to his tough (and from the outside, confusing) final year at Jordan, this book is fascinating for its motoring and human insights.

Well hark at you, stumbling upon my autobiography. Bet you wouldn't have put money on that three years ago, eh? Please don't stress yourself out too much, though; it's actually socially acceptable nowadays that you're interested.
Firstly I'd like to emphasise that I have written this audiobook myself, so be assured you're getting the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth! (Which was my original choice of title, but babe, we're so over that).
This audiobook documents my story, year by year, from my humble beginnings growing up in the East End of London and becoming one of the nation's most talked-about people overnight to finally moving up the spectrum from guilty pleasure and getting nearer to national treasure. It will make you laugh and cry, and most importantly you'll discover who I really am. If it doesn't do any of those things, you're not legally entitled to a refund - just clearing that up ;-).
I hope you enjoy listening this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. This book has been like therapy, and Lord was I in need. Enjoy!

Michael Clarke is an international cricket legend and one of the most talked about Australians of the 21st century. He was the greatest batsman of his generation and, as captain, possessed the sharpest tactical mind in the game.
Bursting onto the scene in 2004 with a Test century on debut, Michael Clarke was Australian cricket's golden boy. And the batting prodigy they nicknamed Pup certainly fulfilled his destiny in a stellar 11-year international career of 115 Tests, 8,643 runs and 28 centuries.
Yet Michael Clarke also sparked fiercer debate than any other Australian sports star. For a decade his personal life, career fortunes and controversies - real or imagined - were splashed across front pages and scrutinised. Was he simply a hardworking western suburbs kid living every Aussie boy's dream? Or a 21st-century cricketer mired in all the trappings of celebrity?
My Story is the real Michael Clarke, standing up and speaking out for the first time.

Great book from Michael Clarke. His autobiography confirms to the reader his relentless work ethic and his positivity towards the game of cricket. Very few captains moved the game as much as Michael and it was always entertaining to see his field settings for batsmen.I was fortunate to watch Michael in live his debut test and one of his last few games and am very grateful for the experience. Thanks Pup!

I opened it but to be honest I only lasted until about the mid 30s before I had to go out. Michael clearly hadn't done his homework, and the book has less highlights than his hair. No surprises that it is only available as a soft cover.

Wow well what can I say? I'm currently contemplating leaving my fiancé and stalking Davina ( in a none stalking stalky way, so more like strolling or gently meandering her) anyway she's hilarious, strong, silly, naughty and inspiring. Don't get me wrong I definitely don't agree with all of the advice or suggestions and i often blew a rasberry or two ( for someone who wrote a whole chapter on not moaning you surely do moan a lot women ha!) but I have never encountered a more honest and truthful account of hopes, dreams, sadness from someone on a never ending journey to want to be a better person, it was truely beguiling. It was made all the more special listening to Davina read out her own words and especially with such grace and humility told me about her life, just as if it was just us two sat in the kitchen having a cup of tea.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sir Tony Robinson is a much-loved actor, presenter and author with a stellar career lasting over 50 years. Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, he reveals how the boy from South Woodford went from child stardom in the first stage production of Oliver!, a pint-size pickpocket desperately bleaching his incipient moustache, to comedy icon Baldrick, the loyal servant and turnip aficionado in Blackadder.
It wasn't all plain sailing, though. Along the way he was bullied by Steve Marriott, failed to impress Liza Minnelli and was pushed into a stinking London dock by John Wayne. He also entertained us with Maid Marion and Her Merry Men (which he wrote and starred in) and coped manfully when locked naked outside a theatre in Lincoln during the live tour of comedy series Who Dares Wins. He presented Time Team for 20 years, watching countless gardens ruthlessly dug up in the name of archaeology, and risked life and limb filming The Worst Jobs in History.
Packed full of incident and insight, No Cunning Plan is a funny, self-deprecating and always entertaining listen.
    Members Reviews:
    A great listen by a talented story-teller
I enjoyed this highly entertaining autobiography full variety and comical incidents. The author, though famous for his loveable character Baldrick in the Blackadder series, is obviously a multi-talented man, who, by his own admission lacked formal education, but can turn his hand to writing stories for children, create historical documentaries and be a knowledgeable presenter of archeology programmes. He doesnt flinch from describing his failures and weaknesses and is modest over his successes. He comes over as a devoted father, a loving husband of three wives and a dedicated political activist.
Reading his own words greatly enhanced this audio book.
    Fairly honest and quite funny
I feel I know Tony quite well now. His openness in sharing his success, let downs and blunders are so human, refreshing and entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Off stage (and screen) he talks politics, has lots of wives and gets stoned a lot. The stories are told well and with plenty of self-awareness. As ever, Tony gives a great performance yet that maybe the book's biggest failing - he's essentially just an ordinary bloke taking the jobs that come along and this is, really, just another job. You're left wanting more insight into Blackadder, Maid Marion, the Greek Tales, etc and the ending comes quite suddenly. It's long but could have been longer.
