    Title: Jeremy Lin
Subtitle: The Incredible Rise of the NBA's Most Unlikely Superstar
    Author: Bill Gutman
    Narrator: L. J. Ganser
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-26-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Who would have thought that an Asian-American, who stood just 5' 3" tall as a freshman in high school, and eventually went to Harvard to major in economics, would become the NBA's most talked about star in decades?
But that's exactly what happened to Jeremy Lin. Undrafted out of college and subsequently waived in short order by both the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, Lin was signed by the underachieving New York Knicks. After a three-game stint in the D-League for players deemed not yet good enough, he was recalled when a roster spot opened up. In his first 23 games, however, he played for just 55 minutes and was again close to being cut.
Then, on February 4, he came off the bench against the New Jersey Nets and scored 25 points and led the Knicks to victory. He started the following game and took off, scoring 28 points and adding 8 assists. And just like that Linsanity was born.
In his first five starts, the now 6' 3" Lin not only showed that he knew all the nuances of playing point guard, but also made the players around him better. With the Knicks two biggest stars - Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire - out of the lineup, the Knicks won seven straight, making Jeremy Lin the toast of New York and the biggest feel-good story in the NBA.
Madison Square Garden is again rocking every night as Jeremy Lin continues to lead his team toward an unexpected playoff berth.
    Editorial Reviews:
The "Linsanity" that greeted then-New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin during his 2012 meteoric rise to fame is hard to forget. This audiobook unravels Lin's story, including his childhood in Palo Alto, his days leading bible study groups at Harvard, his signing with the Knicks, and then the out-of-the-blue winning streak that made him the most talked-about star of the NBA. Enlivened with dramatic intensity by the baritone voice of performer L. J. Ganser, this audiobook will appeal to fans who really want to get to know Lin in all his intriguing complexity.

    Title: A Moment in Time
Subtitle: An American Story of Baseball, Heartbreak, and Grace
    Author: Ralph Branca, David Ritz
    Narrator: Traber Burns
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 43 mins

    Release date: 09-27-11
Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Ralph Branca is best known for throwing the pitch that resulted in Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World", the historic homerun that capped an incredible comeback and won the pennant for the Giants in 1951. And so Branca was on the losing end of what many consider to be baseball's most thrilling moment, but that notoriety belies a profoundly successful life and career. A Moment in Time is the remarkable story of a man who could have been destroyed by a supreme professional embarrassment, but wasn't.
Branca came up as a young phenom, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers during their heyday. He was a staple of the Dodgers' teams in the late 40's, dominating the National League. New York City itself was immersed in post-war optimism, and the three teams produced passionate rivalries. It's no stretch to say that New York baseball was the center of the sporting universe. In those days, the players were part of the fabric of the neighborhoods, of the city itself. It's a world populated by legendary characters like Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Gil Hodges, Leo Durocher, Branch Rickey, and Walter O'Malley. This is the world that Branca's memoir evokes.
The infamous homerun is, of course, still deeply ingrained in that story. Seven years ago, Joshua Prager reported in the Wall Street Journal that the Giants had cheated, illegally stolen signs, and that Bobby Thomson knew a fastball was coming on that fateful pitch. Prager's story made international headlines and produced a best-selling book, but it wasn't news to Ralph Branca, who found out from a teammate in 1954. Over the years, Branca has always declined to comment on the scandal, out of respect for his friendship with Thomson. He is finally ready to tell his story, which is as entertaining and inspiring as any classic baseball tale.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

    Publisher's Summary:
Muhammad Ali's considerable skills as a boxer earned him the world heavyweight championship, a title that he lost and regained twice. But it was the force of his personality and his unwavering personal convictions that made him a lightning rod of the turbulent 1960s and elevated him to the status of the most recognized, controversial, and admired athlete in the world. He stunned the public early on by declaring his conversion to the Black Muslim religion. Only after many months did the media realize that Ali's decision was neither a publicity stunt nor defiance of the whith world but an expression of Ali's inner sense of discipline and spirituality. During his championship reign of the 1960s, Ali was virtually unhittable, much less beatable. One of the defeated contenders, Zora Foley, marveled, "He could write the book on boxing." Muhammad Ali offers a solid introduction to his life. The book is published by Chelsea House Publishing, a leading publisher of educational material.

    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
When Ellen MacArthur set sail in her record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2004, it was the culmination of a lifetimes love for the sea and the fulfilment of an ambitious dream. Aged just 18, she was to sail her tiny boat around the coast of Britain single-handedly. It was the first of many astounding achievements. In 2009, Ellen shocked the public when she said she would be turning her back on competitive sailing to focus on the issue of sustainability.
How would the centurys greatest sportswoman turn her drive and ambition towards this seemingly impossible challenge facing humanity? This is not a book about just sailing; it is a story about hope and determination, about family and the ties that bond and drive us, and how one person can make a difference.

    Beyond winning
Winning is a moment in time. Ellen evolved from the dynamics of very demanding sailing at a young age to a journey without the destination of a finishing line. Both are good both are important. Well written. As a sailor who loves the open ocean both Ellen's books plays to that passion and this book to sustaining it.
    Simply Brilliant
A beautiful story with clear insights to start the journey to abundance. Thank you Ellen.
    A Little Samey
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If they hadn't read any of the other Ellen books then yes.
Do you think Full Circle: My Life and Journey needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I think of the three Ellen MacArthur books I've read / and or listened to its saturated the story.
    Full circle
Contains a variety of emotional tales. It's a good biography of a courageous, spirited lady. It tells of her 'down to earth' determination and compassionate sensitivity. Seeking adventure in her youth then facilitating sailing experiences to others with her charitable trusts and schemes.
Ellen had a conscience realisation that mankind is destroying the planet. She embarks on a very noble quest to educate and hopefully slow this destructive process.
    Narration was clear and expressive.
I enjoyed listening to this book.
    Thoroughly inspiring !
Whilst we all can't be intrepid explorers this book is an inspiration to follow ones dreams and goals. Inspired me to take up square rig sailing with the www.tallships.org. Bravo!

Now I know why his show was so good. He kept himself out of it--except for the occasional JoshCam's.
I am exploring, seeing, as Josh leads the way.
The show was NOT A SELFIE! That leaves the audience out of the adventure when it is all about me me me me and more me
Oh I hope someday he writes the rest of his adventures. I am so amazed of the background. Lucky to be alive.
Tough on the constitution. Thank God for medicine and coincidence.
Actually at one point, I realized that he was lucky to have had food poisoning --because the medicine he took for that--kept him from dying of what would be a fatal Recluse Spider bite. So, maybe God was looking out for him knowing what was waiting for him around the corner..
And excellent survival stuff he included in the book--if I am ever unlucky to get in a bad situation, it will help.
I would have loved to read the background on some of the shows in the following seasons.
A great read ... and longer would be good as well.
I've enjoyed Josh's show, "Digging for the Truth", since it first aired on the History Channel, so when I found he'd written a book about his adventures, I was excited to read it.
In addition to providing some personal background about the host of the show, the book gives us some insight into what it's like to be the host of a highly successful TV program that just happens to require that each episode be filmed in an exotic and often far flung location. His shooting and travel schedule is ... well ... crazy. Josh thinks he has the greatest job in the world, and it shows when you watch him in action and read his thoughts about his adventures. But personally, I'm glad HE is the one running him self ragged to make these wonderful shows and all I have to do is watch them.

    Publisher's Summary:
Rayner Bourton, original Rocky Horror and all 'round nice guy, has released this wonderful new book with his memories of the early days of The Rocky Horror Show. It gives a brilliant insight from the first auditions though the original Theatre Upstairs production to the Kings Road shows.
For the true Rocky Horror fans, this book is a mine of information, with many descriptions of how the show evolved from the first drafts of Richard O'Brien's cult masterpiece to the polished article that opened on 19th June 1973. This book gives you insight into this magical period when none of these talented young actors had any clue that they were starting out on such an extraordinary journey. Crystal clear memories of those very early days have appeared obscured under a veil of glitter and fishnets. Until now.
Full of amusing anecdotes and endearing impressions of his fellow cast members, including Frankenfurter himself, Tim Curry, Rayner takes the reader on a fascinating journey. But there is more to this tale than Rocky. Rayner eloquently conveys his experience of city life during the 1970s - the people, parties, places and attitudes. This is definitely a must-have for Rocky Horror fans.

Lucille ONeal shares her public battles and personal struggles as the young, single mother of NBA legend Shaquille ONeal. Lucille ONeal would one day have it all, but not before fighting the public battles and personal demons that would threaten to shatter the very foundation of her life and took a devastating toll along the way.
Over the past 16 years, Lucille ONeal has become one of the best-known mothers of a celebrity athlete. But behind the scenes, this mother of four has her own story, at once heartbreakingly familiar in its pain and yet wonderfully inspirational in its outcome. In this memoir, ONeal candidly describes the pain of being an outcast and the stigma of becoming an unwed teenage mother. Most interestingly, she candidly shares another side of fame and fortunea side rarely revealed or admitted to in public: her unexpected feelings of anger and resentment towards her sons blinding success.

Ms. Lucille's story is so personal that it is ...
Ms. Lucille's story is so personal that it is only natural for it to be a universal one:that of many women; wives; mothers who can identify with it beyond age; location and race divisions. As a new mother in the 1970's of a son; abandoned by the child's father shortly after, I shared plenty of heartache and insecure feelings with Lucille. As a single parent, shuttling my little one between nursery school and grandparents' home, our home: we have similar experiences. As a determined woman determined to have a college education: well, yes you get it. Lucille O'Neal is one lady I'd be honored to share a meal, memories, thoughts with....in the grander scheme of the universe, we are sisters.
    Great read!!!!
My 11 year old son can't put this book down!!!!
    A True Believer
Yes, I read the book and I wanted to love it. When I learned to read in grade school, I gobbled up autobiographies and biographies and am still fascinated by people's lives. Of course, everyone in my household knows who Shaquille is and his mother-the ads on tv with the huge shoes are classic. And I can tell she absolutely adores and loves her children.
I don't know if she wrote it herself or had help, but the writing is uneven and sometimes choppy. The references to the Bible got to be too much and I rushed through the last two chapters because I was burned out on the verse-quoting. I grew up Christian and left that philosophical belief system when I was nineteen because it, and still is, irrelevant to how I live. I love a couple of quotations, neither of which were included in the verses she likes. I am happy she found her way and how she was a huge influence on her children. And her courage when she left her husband is awesome. I admire her just not her book...
    Great woman!
This is the autobiography of an exceptional woman! I recently heard her speak at an event and was so entertained and inspired, so I bought the book thinking it would be more of the same. While the stories of her background are abundant, I personally was looking for more of the inspirational topics she was sharing at the speech. Maybe another book will be coming.

    Author: Judi Dench
    Narrator: Samantha Bond

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-10
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From the moment Judi Dench appeared as a teenager in the York Mystery Plays it was clear that acting would be her career. Trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama it was her performance in her 20s as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's memorable Old Vic production that turned her into a star. In the theatre since, she has played every classic role from Titania (three times, most recently in 2010) to Cleopatra.
She first became a household name via television, thanks initially to a sit-com, A Fine Romance, in which she played alongside the actor Michael Williams, whom she married in 1971.
She has since made eight series of another sit-com, As Time Goes By (with Geoffrey Palmer), as well as plays and classic serials, Middlemarch and Cranford.
In the cinema, her films have ranged from Ladies In Lavender, opposite Maggie Smith, through Notes on a Scandal with Cate Blanchett to Shakespeare in Love, in which she played Queen Elizabeth, a role that gained her a Hollywood Oscar. But it is her role as 'M' in six James Bond films, beginning with Goldeneye in 1995, that has gained her worldwide recognition. This book is, however, much more than a career record.

    A must listen biography
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this biography. Ideal for anyone who has an interest in the theatre and the greats who walk the boards not to mention a big dollop of Dame Judi's dry wit! Pure pleasure.
    Wonderful and Inspiring
Would you listen to And Furthermore again? Why?
It was full of humour and from the heart. And from the brain too. Wonderful and beautifully read by Samantha Bond. Funny and intelligent, very humanly told.
    Any additional comments?
Listeners who thought this was uninteresting must have been listening to something else by accident.
    A Good Listen
If you could sum up And Furthermore in three words, what would they be?
    Interesting, enthralling, delightful
What was one of the most memorable moments of And Furthermore?
    All of it!
What about Samantha Bonds performance did you like?
As they are of a similar ilk you could almost hear Judi speaking herself. Expertly executed!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not out loud but I chuckled and smiled. A little saddened but not tearful.
    Any additional comments?
A wonderful biography of an exceptional actress. Enjoyed every minute.
    And Furthermore
Shame that the book is read by someone else. I would have preferred Judy's voice. Kristina

    Title: Tears of a Clown
Subtitle: Glenn Beck and the Tea-Bagging of America
    Author: Dana Milbank
    Narrator: Oliver Wyman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-05-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank takes a fair and balanced look at the unsettling rise of the silly Fox News host Glenn Beck. Thomas Jefferson famously wrote that the tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure. In America in 2010, Glenn Beck provides the very refreshment Jefferson had in mind: Whether he's the patriot or the tyrant, he's definitely full of manure.
The wildly popular Fox News host with three million daily viewers perfectly captures the vitriol of our time and the fact-free state of our political culture. The secret to his success is his willingness to traffic in the fringe conspiracies and Internet hearsay that others wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole: death panels, government health insurance for dogs, FEMA concentration camps, an Obama security force like Hitlers SS.
But Beck, who is, according to a recent Gallup poll, admired by more Americans than the Pope, has nothing in his background that identifies him as an ideologue, giving rise to the speculation that his right-wing shtick is just that - the act of a brilliant showman, known for both his over-the-top daily outrages and for weeping on the air.
Milbank describes, with lacerating wit, just how the former shock jock without a college degree has managed to become the most recognizable leader of antigovernment conservatives and exposes him as the guy who is single-handedly giving patriotism a bad name.
    Members Reviews:
Who is more of a clown the author or Beck?
This was the most tedious, boring book I have ever listened to. However, it seems the author in her viewpoint is as confused as Beck. Beck sees danger in our future. The author sees none. No mention of the perils of our times by this author. The author seems to think all is well with the things that are. No mention of oil depletion, worldwide climate change, loss of civil rights, the loss of arable land and decreased ground water to feed and alleviate the thirst of increasing numbers of humans, the loss of nutrition from foods grown in depleted soil, or the undue influence of rich, profit-minded corporations in all of our legislative bodies. So who is the clown?
    Obviously written by a clown
What disappointed you about Tears of a Clown?
Great Title Audible.. Do you realize
What could Dana Milbank have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Its a smear book.. written by our media..
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    raw bias
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Tears of a Clown?
pointless it is what it is...
    Any additional comments?
I dont seem to find smear books coming up with my search on big left figures in the country.
Good book points out obvious, Beck is a A-- Clown
This was a fun listen. It will leave the listener with a good knowledge on why Beck is not only inconsistent in his statements, but also downright disingenuous. The question we are all left with is whether Beck is laughing all the way to the bank knowingly duping those looking for their daily "the world is ending" fix, or is he touched in the head. Either conclusion seems viable and this book gives great evidence about his ideologies and where they come from.
This book makes the assumption that most of his craziness comes from his conversion to the Mormon faith.

Title: Johnny Cash and the Paradox of American Identity
    Author: Leigh H. Edwards
    Narrator: Beth Richmond
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-30-10
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Throughout his career, Johnny Cash was depicted - and depicted himself - as a walking contradiction: social protestor and establishment patriot, drugged wildman and devout Christian crusader, rebel outlaw hillbilly thug and elder statesman.
Leigh H. Edwards explores the allure of this paradoxical image and its cultural significance. She argues that Cash embodied irresolvable contradictions of American identity that reflect foundational issues in the American experience, such as the tensions between freedom and patriotism, individual rights and nationalism, the sacred and the profane. She illustrates how this model of ambivalence is a vital paradigm for American popular music, and for American identity in general.
Making use of sources such as Cash's autobiographies, lyrics, music, liner notes, and interviews, Edwards pays equal attention to depictions of Cash by others, such as Vivian Cash's publication of his letters to her, documentaries and music journalism about him, Walk the Line, and fan club materials found in the archives at the Country Music Foundation in Nashville, to create a full portrait of Cash and his significance as a cultural icon. The book is published by Indiana University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Edwards' exploration... is nothing short of fascinating. The book provides in-depth analyses and challenges readers to think critically about 'Johnny Cash' (as well as Johnny Cash), a symbol that has been extremely important and influential in pop culture, but one that has not been widely written about as such." (Jason Buel, PopMatters)
    Members Reviews:
Cutting-edge scholarship and a good read to boot!
Leigh Edwards has succeeded at a difficult task: she has written an academic book with a wide appeal. Part of that appeal stems from the multifaceted approach Dr. Edwards uses to make her point. Through media analysis, fan studies, and literary analysis of lyrics (among other techniques), she paints a convincing picture of the resonance between Johnny Cash -- warts, contradictions and all -- and America's view of itself.
Anyone who is interested in learning about Johnny Cash, country music, media studies, analysis of lyrics, etc., will enjoy reading this book. They will also enjoy following along with the way in which Dr. Edwards pieces together the puzzle. By considering how various constructions of authenticity, manhood and masculinity, race, class, and religion apply to Cash -- his image and his oeuvre -- she has broken ground on a new kind of scholarship: one that is accessible and enjoyable to a broad audience of literate readers.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It gave me many things to think about and helped me gain insight into the music industry, fandom and celebrity, and how personal identity can relate to national consciousness. I highly recommend it.
Questioning Gender is Looking for Trouble
Like the "Boy Named Sue" who wants to kill his evil father but then forgives him for having given him a girl's name, I was put off at first by the perspective adopted in this book, but (to borrow from the song's lyrics), "I came away with a different point of view".
Leigh Edwards makes heavy use of academic jargon and political correctness.
