never read a book like this

sure took me to a world that I knew nothing about. transwomen and all the prejudice. bigotry and violence to them. after read this I have a new respect for them all they want is to be accepted and loved.

Interesting but often tedious

This is an interesting book with a transgender woman as the protagonist. I learned a lot about a world I have had little experience with. Unfortunately, the constant obsessing over her looks and her sex life becomes tedious very fast.

Please give Bobbi a story she's worthy of!

First of all, I LOVE the character of Bobbi Logan. She is a transgender woman running a beauty salon during the worst recession, trying to make a go of her life, find love, maintain a relationship with her ex-wife, all while being the main suspect in a 5-year-old murder. She is a strong, beautiful woman who is very empathetic.

HOWEVER, the book drones on and on and on about how Detective Wilkins personally doesn't like her and is out to prove she is the one who committed the murder 5 years ago. Page after page after page where nothing happens. Perhaps that changed, I gave up waiting when I had read over half of the book. The main point of the book seems to be that we've got a transgender main character. There has to be more to the story than that. I would love to read more about Bobbi Logan, but please put her in a book with a story worthy of her.

Love the aggar series!!

Great addition to the aggar series, not one of my favourites to be honest, works well as a stand alone book but also closes the gap between book one (shadows of aggar) and two (fires of aggar). definitely worth reading or listening to!!

What an excellent mix of fantasy

What an excellent mix of fantasy, magic,and reality. I couldn't put it down pretty much reading it straight through. I don't want to give too much away but it's about time a gay character gets to be the hero and I hope there is more to the story coming in the future. Loved it!

Wow

I finished the two books in one week; I can't wait for the next book. I think I have a new favorite author. But what about Diego?

A wonderful roller coaster ride with a gay teenage witch! Jump on!

What a thrilling follow up to Book 1 - The Boy Who Couldn't Fly Home! I can hardly put this book down. Charlie's adventure continues as he gets trained as a new witch, reluctantly embraces his sexuality, falls in love and finds out just how evil the bad witches can be. The author is a master at creating suspense and making the world of witches absolutely believable. He also show us, with such compassion, the inner world of a teenage boy. Charlie is discovering whole new parts of himself - his magical abilities and his new-found sexuality - and it's not easy. It's confusing, exciting, and disorienting all at the same time. Jacobson describes the whole roller coaster in a way that takes us, his readers, on the ride with Charlie. If you haven't started reading this book -- don't hesitate! Pick it up now and buckle up!

Highly Recommended!

Although this book is billed as Young Adult fiction I enjoyed it immensely (at 60!). It's a rich and complex story that kept me on the edge of my seat, yet it's also quite sweet in parts.

"A Survival Manual for Teenagers": And Adults, Too

Those who follow my reviews know that translated fiction is one of my obsessions, so I was delighted to discover NYRB's reissue of the Taiwanese cult classic of queer literature, Notes of a Crocodile. Described by its translator Bonnie Huie as a "survival manual for teenagers, for a certain age when reading the right book can save your life," Notes of a Crocodile nevertheless has much to offer adults, particularly those who are cisgendered.

I must confess to being confused by the book's structure for a large chunk of its relatively modest length. Qiu Miaojin moves back and forth between two narratives, with their only connection being thematic. The first story is the one I was expecting from the publisher's description: that of "the coming-of-age of a group of queer misfits discovering love, friendship, and artistic affinity while hardly studying at Taiwan's most prestigious university." The second story provides the novel's title: a crocodile wearing a human suit, à la the dinosaurs in Eric Garcia's Anonymous Rex series, muses on how people vehemently advocate both for and against crocodiles, despite knowing nothing about them and not even realizing that at least one crocodile lives and works among them. At the risk of stating the obvious, the common theme is separation, isolation, and the tendency of some people to make authoritative statements about a group whose experiences they do not share:

"In the final analysis, our knowledge and understanding of crocodiles is but a microorganism on a fingernail. But in the customary practice of advanced nations, we will safeguard information within the grip of our metal jaws, holding on as if our lives depended on it."

Sound familiar?

Notes of a Crocodile concludes with a message which should be emblazoned on the blackboard in every classroom in the world, from preschool to university:

"The deeper you love, the deeper your compassion grows and the more you realize that the other suffers just as you do.

Yes, you will probably cry.

If you haven't read this, then do yourself two favors:

1. No spoilers. Because you have to go into this blind, okay? Seriously, please don't read any spoilers because you'll miss out on the total emotion of this story.

Yes, it's heartbreaking. Sure there's a happy-ish kind of ending, but the reality of the story (of how this happens every day) left me...bereft and just kind of...shattered.

And Derrick McClain? Well, he just shattered me all over again. His narration has the kind of emotion you hear from people who have lost everything. Who have hit the bottom of tolerance for the world and all its cruelty.

The story is so well crafted, and seen solely through David's POV, it renders your heart in two while still giving glimpses of hope and redemption and love and perseverance.

Because the not knowing was the worst thing of all.

When you didnt know, you were stuck in this limbo.

You didnt know who to focus your anger on.

Your confusion.

Your fear.

Your anguish.

So it went wherever it could, that focus.

And sometimes, it went toward the wrong person.

I just want to find David and Phillip and give them long hugs.

This is not a fast paced narration. There is a deliberateness to McClain's voice work that, to some, might seem slow.

The writing, for me, was brilliant. The writing needed narration that would really be just as brilliant. It needed a narrator who would pull the nuance of emotion and brokenhearted pain and weave it throughout the spoken words without crushing the listener.

Most of all the narrator needed to pull off the ending. To render hope where it seemed hopeless.

Derrick McClain delivers on all counts.

2. If you love a good Hurt/Comfort story and can stand some heartbreak and maybe even some wookiee cry face...buy this.

Unforgettable!

First, let me start by giving the best advice I can muster after having listened to every second of this 5 hour and 11 minute masterpiece: Grab a bottle of vodka, a box of tissues and buckle up because it's gonna be a looooong night! It's officially 'the day after' and I'm still recovering.....

This story touched my heart on more levels than I could have imagined and without giving away spoilers, all I can do is recommend that you listen to this tragically beautiful story about life, love, loss and everything in-between. TJ Klune proves yet once again he is an amazing writer and that he's made another perfect decision to have Derrick McClain bring his characters to life. Bravo, Gentlemen!!!

Incredibly heart-wrenching is how I would review this book. It left me as an emotional trainwreck by the end. Do not read spoilers before going into this book.

K. J. Charles does it again

K.J. Charles is an auto buy for me ever since the Magpie series. That remains the favorite, but I definitely enjoyed the second installment of the Sins of the Cities series. While the first book in the series had a gentleness between the two main characters, in this book there is friction and sparks. Following an enemies to lovers storyline, the cynical psychic Justin rubs the crusading journalist Nathaniel the wrong way. But that doesn't stop them from wanting to rub each in other ways (sorry, easy joke). The initial attraction grows to something more when danger follows them in the fog polluted streets of Victorian London. One of my favorite things about K. J. Charles is that her characters are not without flaws and issues. Justin is, to me, the more interesting as someone who will do whatever he can to keep his precarious social position as his protection from poverty and the streets. Nathaniel struggles to put aside his self righteousness but does so once he sees Justin's reality is less privileged than his own. The sex scenes work well as does the eventual solid partnership they form together. The narrator does his usual great job of giving unique voices to each character. In a nutshell, a fun listen that is well worth a credit. The biggest problem I have is the wait until the final book coming out in October.

Great addition to the series

The second installment in KJ Charles' Sins of the cities series is a wonderful enemies to lovers story, with two completely opposite men clashing on every page, with a great deal of angry sex to follow, but also some fantastic character growth.

Each book revolves around a new couple, but the overall mystery story arc continues, so you really need to read the series in order to get the full picture.

Justin Lazarus is know as "The seer of London", a complete fraud and charlatan, he has no issue with manipulating and tricking people in grief, when he pretends to speak to their loved ones 'behind the veil'.

A good sequal to Making it Personal

Who was your favorite character and why?

My Favorite character would probably have to be Angelo, he was such a caring person. Also, really liked how he expressed himself with his woodworking.

Who was the most memorable character of Personal Changes and why?

the most memorable would have to be Will because he made quite an impact in the first book Making It Personal and he makes an excellent best friend to Rick.

I enjoyed how this one wasn't an insta-love. These guys had to work for it & had some things to overcome.

Love finally found!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the friendship between Rick and Will (and their co-workers) almost as much as the growing relationship between Rick and Angelo. I always felt that Rick had a great support system.

What does Cornell Collins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Well, I have only experienced the book on audio, and I feel that he did a good job giving each character a very distinct voice. When he spoke as Julian, I didn't like him at all, and when he spoke as Angelo, I fell a little in love.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when Angelo's family came around. His sister in particular was wonderful.

Any additional comments?

KC Wells is a great author with a wide range. This book, while it had seriously sexy moments, was one of her more "vanilla" stories. I loved it just as much as her BDSM stories. Cornell Collins did a fantastic job bringing Ms. Wells' story to life.

Super hot sexy love story with beautiful men

I loved this audio book! Superb story with plenty of twists and character development and a true love HEA.

The writing was funny and clever and sweet. Rick and Angelo make such a lovely couple and their path wasn't a smooth one, but so worth it I've the end!

Cornell Collins' narration was perfect for the story. Great emotion and characterisation.

Highly .
