Heartfelt story with a ton of feels

Ouch! Oh man. This hurt my heart to listen to. There is so much pain in the first third of this story. Most of Cardenos stories are like a blanket fresh from the dryer for me. So comforting and nice to wrap up in. But this was very prickly and I had to brace myself for the sad, sad, sad parts.

I really hate it when there is a Big Misunderstanding and though thats not exactly what happened here, it is in fact the crux of the problem. Add to it years of separation and Im just a sobbing mess.

What I appreciated was that once back together these two dont mess around. They talk it out and get back in the program like all those years didnt happen. Woot! Thank Goodness!

In the end, as expected, we have a great, super sappy, wonderfully happy, and marvelously Cardeno story well worth the pain at the beginning.

Audio

I am on the fence with this narrator. He sort of reminds me of Vizzini from the Princess Bride . He has a bit of a lisp that he mostly covers up but it still slips through and to me sadly- was a distraction. I think he mostly understands and handles the emotions well. Sometimes he fell a bit flat for me especially on the non-dialog portions but there are times when he really shines in his grasp of the scene and the pacing.

So while the story is a 4.5 of 5 stars and parts of the narration are as well, there are parts that are more like 3 of 5. Im gonna round down the audio and give the overall audiobook experience a 4 of 5 stars. It was good, but I think in other hands it could have been great.

Hurt/comfort romance with major miscommunication/misunderstanding, angst, some time apart before reuniting, bonding, hot sexy times, and getting their hard won HEA.

The narration is very good and Robert M. Clark does a wonderful job with timing, character voices, emotion, and tone. He infuses the story with warmth, heat, and life.

It is a good listen. If you haven't purchased one of KA Moll's books, do yourself a favorite and give this one a try.

Really good story

I enjoyed the story a lot. wonderful plot, easy to like characters. real life issues with a great resolution. However the narration killed it. I'm sorry but the narrator was void of emotions, she read real choppy, and made it hard to listen to. I would recommend this book to everyone, but i would by the book or read it on kindle. don't get the audio version.

Listen on slower speed

The narrator seems to be in a huge hurry to get through the story. Story is okay, probably better in print. It was refreshing not to have anything harden on contact in a radclyffe book for once.

Killed by the narrator...

The story was nice but the narrator killed it (and not in a good way). She gave the wrong expressions at the wrong time and to the wrong parts of the story. The emotions in her reading were off and it ruined the story for me. (To the author). Stick with Abby Craden or Nicole Zanzarella, they bring your stories and characters to life.

Nicely Done

Another audio nicely done by Bold Strokes & Radclyffe. I enjoyed the story & thought the description of Yardley Estate, Graham, & things of a Concert Pianist was wonderful. The narrator did a good job . I highly recommend this audio.

Narrator spoke way too fast.

The narrator spoke very rapidly throughout the book. It felt rushed, and made me feel rushed.

Will there be a sequel?

Loved the story, knew that I will love it. But the narrator was in a hurry, I felt like shouting to herhey, Paige where are you running? Who is perusing you?

Well I didnt

I think that the Voice she has is very good, even if she chose this alarmed higher pitch Voice for Anna which I didnt care for.

So next time Paige, slow down just a little and dont use this higher pitch for an adult even if she is younger than the main character

Last, I am looking forward to more books like that from Radclyffe.

Not for me

This was hard for me to finish. The story was not interesting or engaging. The characters one dimensional. The narration was fine except for when Janet spoke, it was like introspective slow asian??? It was really annoying . I also did not care for the constant use of the "hearing the characters thoughts" just too much. Maybe I have reached my Radclyffe saturation limit!

Second time reading, so here's a new review

The first time i listened to this book honestly i wasn't impressed. The storyline for me was hard to follow with the narrator. So whats different now, I choose to listen to the words more carefully. Drew is ex military and has suffered great loss. Susan and Shawn are twins with hidden issues themself. the backgrounds of these ladies are not exposed right away, but are casually brought out in conversations. for some this would be frustration. However, i undersrand this is more about Drew and Shawn finding eachother dispite their past.

Susan's brief relaps is what finally pushes them together, and from their they can no longer hide their feelings

I really enjoyed this book this time around. I felt sad and heartbreak, I felt passion and chemistry between the two main characters as if i was right there witnessing them interact personally. This book was well written full of love.

So this is one of those, dont judge right away , truly take the time to listen this wonderful love story.

Loved this book.

Good Listen and Interesting Story

I enjoyed the narration and the characters. The story was interesting as well. Great romantic build up between the soon to be lovers.

Warrior is a heart touching story of love, with a vet.

Drew was a marine who taught self defense in the core, she also carried a dark secret that prevented her from finding love. Narrator made the story difficult at some points.

The story itself was enjoyable but the narration was bad. the voice actor made all of the women sound snobby and mixed up accents. She sounded like she was telling or speed reading. If I was the author I would demand a new narrator, one that does her writing justice.

Narrator ruined it for me

I loved the story. But, I couldn't feel the sexiness, the chemistry between the characters. The narrator did not change her tone, it was like the 2 main characters were rough with one another when having a conversation; and they were too aggressive with one another that at times I thought they were fighting when they were actually not. And narrator made them sound as if men 's voices. There was no finesse of a woman's voice. And some of the men sounded too soft. It was irritating and annoying. I finally bought the book and finished reading it. Really bad because the story is really good. Get the book and not the audio!

if the story hadn't captivated me there would have

been no way I would have listened to this book. it was the worst narration I have ever heard and only managed to get through it as I was a captive audience on a transatlantic flight. I have subscribed to audible for the last 14 years or since it was established and this is the worst produced book I have heard. it seemed to not have been edited, the sound quality was horrible and harsh, the reader limited in the number of voices she could manage. It appears that nobody was interested in the sound balance or the speed of narration - producing a tinny pitched production that was read miles to fast by somebody who sounded like an agitated mouse from a Disney cartoon movie. This was an Audible production and the author Carsen Taite, the her publisher should be horrified by the final product of a good book. I will never read another book narrated by Amanda Goodyear ever.

Who would've gussed!!

The plot was brilliant from the beginning. Unforeseen adventure at every turn. unforseen realization around every corner till that one moment of instant realization that took hold. very well written and narrated. With how HOT some of the scenes was so could the performances. Hence the 4 I gave for performance........

Not interesting. Not cute.

The WORST thing about this story is the narrator. There's a Spanish character and I swear he makes her sound like a cheap vampire. It's horrible.

The story is just, super cliche. They both have lady best friends that know ALL their secrets whom they gush to and giggle with and-just shoot me. This was a struggle to finish. And don't get me started on spiders. From start to finish there was just nothing original about this.

The writing isn't bad, but since the author never takes us through anything lawyer-y I wonder why that career was chosen for the characters, except maybe for the title. It's just lazy writing.

Would not recommend. Frustrated I wasted money on it.

My new fave for a rainy day!

This books hits all my fluff and sap buttons. And I love it! Bossy and cheeky and low angst and hot sex! When you want a HEA, light listen, this is it. It's not an insta-love story but almost. Just enough angst to carry the story and thank gawd there is no "miscommunication" story line. (I am so over those!) There are no real surprises in this story, but I fell in love with Ed and Alec and their banter. After my 3rd listen, I bought the book.

For once we have a strong bottom who believes in himself and isn't willing to settle for less. And a strong top who needs someone to lean on. This has become my favorite rainy day read.

The narrator does a pretty good job.

4 stars = I REALLY liked this book!

I received a free copy of this audiobook to listen to and review for Wicked Reads.

The Cattle Barons Bogus Boyfriend is a M/M take on the classic romance theme of the wealthy boss falling in love with his secretary, who has been secretly pining for him. It makes for a sweet romance, but is relatively angst free other than the vindictive ex and the predictable hes a gold digger accusation thrown in by Lincolns stepmother about Jonah. Because the romance is between two men, it enables Bennett to add a twist to the story regarding Jonahs best friend, Caylee, but even that scenario is ultimately low angst. Although its well written, had I only read the book instead of listening to the audiobook, I would have given it 3 stars because while its entertaining and I did enjoy it, it didnt grab me enough that it made a lasting impression.

For me, the narration made The Cattle Barons Bogus Boyfriend truly enjoyable and is what earned the audiobook edition the extra star. With that said, Rusty Topsfields narrative talents were evident as he excelled at making it apparent when Jonah was speaking versus thinking to himself which actually occurs a lot in the story. Initially I found Topsfields use of whispering to indicate Jonahs internal monologue to be annoying, but as it became clear that Jonah internalized a lot especially snarky comments the whispering intonation became my best friend in the audibook as I would have been extremely lost as to when the young man was speaking versus thinking. Topsfield also does a great job of bringing the other characters to life and, as much as I disliked her, I thought he did a wonderful job of conveying the different sides to Eloises character, especially her change in attitude from her initial introduction to how she engaged with the other characters in the epilogue.

While I liked both Jonah and Lincoln, there were times that I found Jonah off-putting. Several times in the beginning of the book, prior to him learning that Lincoln was bisexual, he had to remind himself not to read anything into Lincolns praise and acts of kindness because his boss was straight so it couldnt mean anything. Crushes are fine, its what provides fodder for our day dreams, but to need to remind yourself repeatedly that the object of your affection is straight and the guy is just being nice, well it just felt off to me, as though the author had forgotten shed already given the reader that information.

Great sexy menage book

I was given this book in return for my honest unbiased opinion. This is a great menage short story. I loved this book and the narration wss great as well.

Billionaires and a Waitress

Lola is a waitress who is sweet and yet has bad luck with boyfriends. She's working a party, meets and is asked out by Ryan who she thinks is a waiter. He turns out to be a billionaire. Going out to dinner they run into another billionaire, Henry. They land up at Henry's house and become involved. As far as menage is concerned it's tame, but I actually liked that. I just couldn't ever like Henry very much and Lola fell rather quickly,

All in all a nice short listen..the narrator was good but I didn't like

like her Henry. Nice quick filler, no angst and likable characters.

Tame and Boring

This was so boring I couldn't finish it. The narrator was ok, she did a good job with what she had. For those who have read spicy romance, this book is incredibly tame. Love scenes were dull, short and not descriptive. Don't waste your time, money or credit.

A very yummy threesome

This menage novella hits all the right boxes, it's hot and it has a good story line. If you like a good billionaire romance then this should be right up your alley.

Lola is a waitress, while taking a break on a job she gets asked on a date, the date she goes on is not what she was expecting, queue the menage.

Lissa does a great job with the narration, the character voices are good and the flow is excellent. There is one point where the production missed taking out a mistake and the audio briefly repeats, but it's only a few seconds so it's only a minor issue.

Good Story

This is a good story if you like M/M. I did not realize that is what it was before I asked to review it. I will definitely have to read my descriptions when choosing a book to review and not go by cover and title. That being said the story was good and kept my attention except certain parts. The plot twist were good and the narrator added to the story. I was given this book via audiobook boom in exchange for a review.

One thing's for sure, the tension between the three of them is thick enough to cut with a knife...even one of those dull plastic dealies that come in the package with Mannariffic EZ-Mealz.

The Starving Years is a must-read for fans of dystopian romance looking for scorching M/M/M chemistry in a fast-paced, page-turning adventure.

A brilliant story about 3 men who fall in love during chaos.

Good story, ending not so much.

really enjoyed this book. was invested in the story and the characters. The ending felt like a train that ran out of track. everybody got off safe, but you can't help feeling if it just chugged along you would have seen something great. I still recommended it to a friend.

Amazing addition to the genre

A MMM romance that depends on plot rather than graphic sex was a great treat. Truly enjoyed this story. I hope the author writes more long form stories like this.

JCP hits another home run!

Wisconsin's own Jordan Castillo Price has said that she likes to write speculative fiction in which one aspect of modern life is changed, and then ravel the story to show the effects of that one change on the world and people in it. She's done that very successfully in her terrific PsyCop series, and has done it again in The Starving Years.

Price also creates flawed, quirky, even possibly irritating characters, and makes them completely three-dimensional and lovable. The three protagonists, Javier, Nelson, and Tim, are fully realized, interesting individuals, as are several supporting characters.

The plot in this almost-recognizeable alt-NYC is dystopian, and yet many qualities of this world are quite recognizable, and Price uses the opportunity, as do many good writers of sci-fi, to make a few comments about contemporary society.
