The reader is all wrong for this book
I miss the old reader of this series. It is odd to have a male as the reader when a female protagonist is telling the story for the most part.
    Could not listen...
I bought both Last Call and Rum Runner as I was excited there were two more Jack Daniels books. However, I could not get past the narration... The villains' voices are ridiculously overdone to the point of being campy. The author reading is also really bad; he sounds like he's reading it vs. performing. Sorry, and I dislike giving bad reviews, but I highly suggest listening to the "sample" before purchasing as I did. If they were re-recorded with previous narrators they would be great.
    Konrath does it again
Konrath does it again with this latest addition to the Jack Daniels series. As always there're more twists and turns than a roller coaster. I highly recommend this installment.
    Better than I expected!!
I really did enjoy this book. I like the J A Konrath writing style. I admit a few times I had to put the book down and walk away- thinking wow-that was just too much! Even for me! but i always came back. I still miss the female narrator Susie and I miss the individual quirks Dick gave the characters. It was a huge surprise (good job!) cliffhanger and I enjoyed it very much to my surprise and delight. Looking forward to White Russian. Please don't kill off any more of my friends.
Another great book in this Detective series
I will say I enjoyed others in this series more than this one. Although I still highly enjoyed this book. Maybe I am just frustrated over the Character that died at the end of the book as it was one of my favorite characters! lol Anyway this is a great series between humor, fast paced action, etc. Some readers complain there is too much violence and gore but that does not bother me and I actually enjoy it.

Great story, let down by reader's voices.
The storyline is captivating - the reader and his intonation of female and young voices at times so irritating that I was tempted to stop listening.

    Publisher's Summary:
Berlin, 1929. Detective Inspector Rath was a successful career officer in the Cologne Homicide Division before a shooting incident in which he inadvertently killed a man. He has been transferred to the vice squad in Berlin, a job he detests even though he finds a new friend in his boss, Chief Inspector Wolter.
There is seething unrest in the city, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered the vice squad to ruthlessly enforce the ban on May Day demonstrations. The result is catastrophic, with many dead and injured, and a state of emergency is declared in the Communist strongholds of the city.
When a car is hauled out of Berlin's Landwehr Canal with a mutilated corpse inside, the Commissioner decides to use this mystery to divert the attention of press and public from the casualties of the demonstrations. The biggest problem is that the corpse cannot be identified.
Volker Kutscher was born in 1962 in Lindlar, West Germany. He is the author of the enormously successful Gereon Rath crime series which, in addition to compelling narrative, is notable for its scrupulous accuracy about Germany in the years between its beginning in 1927 and the approach to the Second World War.

It's no Bernie Gunther Mystery ...
As a fan of Kerr's Bernie Gunther books, I was excited to read Kutscher series set in the waning days of the Weimar Republic. But what a disappointment.
Sadly, I think a lot of the problems stem from the fact that this book is translated. But I found the language clunky and and the story difficult to follow. There are a lot of characters, few with any real personality.
I fought my way through BABYLON BERLIN, and then even gave SILENT DEATH a shot because I so wanted to give the series a chance. But about four hours in to SILENT DEATH, I realized what the problem in both of these books really is: both books are almost utterly devoid of atmosphere. There's a smattering of history in BABYLON, but in DEATH there's very little to let you know that you are reading a book set in 1930s Germany; instead, it's just a boring police procedural.
I write this review mere days away from the Netflix premier of the BABYLON BERLIN TV series, which has been widely acclaimed. I have a feeling that this may be one of those rare cases when the TV show is actually better than the book.
A Thriller of the First Order
Inspector Rath is a career Homicide officer from Cologne who inadvertently kills a man because of the adverse publicity his father who is a Senior Police Officer gets his son a transfer to Berlin using connections. No one in Berlin except the commissioner knows about the incident in Cologne.
I found Babylon Berlin to be a thriller of the first order, an engaging listen, full of twists and turns.
Indeed the story starts with a man who has clearly been tortured. His battered and bruised lifeless body is found in a stolen car which has been dumped in the river. But who is this man? Where had be come from? and why has he met such a grizzly end? Inspector Rath investigates and he finds out a lot about his new colleagues and Berlin along the way.
The narrative and narration are both excellent. I would highly recommend it.
    Detailed and well constructed narrative
An interesting first novel with an engaging if flawed central character.

Arizona sheriff Joanna Brady returns in this outstanding new mystery set in the beautiful desert country of the Southwest.

Is this a case of murder/suicide, or is it a double homicide? And if someone else is responsible, is it possible that the perpetrator may, even now, be on the hunt for another victim?

    J.A. Jance at her best.
It is great to have another Joanna Brady story after such a long break. This series was my introduction to the writings of J. A. Jance and I like this series more so than her other three series. Brady has suffered the death of her mother and step-father. They were killed by a freeway sniper. Their funeral has not been held yet and Joanna faced the double homicide of two young women at the base of Geronimo Peak near Bisbee. Joanna investigates these deaths to determine cause and find out whodunit. She uncovers a kidnapping, a pedophile and domestic abuse during her investigation. Then another murder occurs on the golf course; Joanna has her hands full. The last part of the book was impossible to stop reading until the end, the suspense had me on the edge of the chair.
It is great to have Frank Montoya back. In earlier books he was Joannas right- hand man. He quit to become the Chief of Police of Sierra Vista. Now Joanna and Frank are working together because they are sharing jurisdiction also with the FBI. We have a new character, FBI special agent Robin Watkins. I am enjoying the new Cochise County Medical Examiner, Dr. Kendra Baldwin. With all the murder investigations going on Joannas life goes on. She is pregnant, running for re-election as Sheriff and has the usual family and Sheriff department problems.
The book is well written. The pace is fast. The plot twists and turns. Jance is superb at capturing human emotions from humor to fear, as well as sorrow and anger. The suspense builds throughout the story as Joanna questions everyone and finds maybe the trust of longtime friends are in question also. Jance is a master story teller. I cannot wait for the next Brady story.
Hillary Huber does an excellent job narrating the book. She is an award winning audiobook narrator.
    Whew!
Just finished listening, and I have to admit, I pretty much cried through the whole thing. No spoilers, but we lose one of the most colorful of the standard characters -- more than one, actually. And that was sad enough -- funny how you get attached to these fictional people, after living with them through what, 17 books? But they have come to seem like real people, or at least they do, when the author is someone as talented as J. A. Jance.
And sad though it was to lose them, what compounded it all was the amount of reflection other characters did, about them, their impact on their lives, and many little re-telling of stories we remember about them from books past.

    Wow! Wow!!!
I really enjoyed Barbara Taylor Sissel's book Faultlines. I was immediately drawn in by the summary description and knew this was a book I had to get. It is about 3 kids (~20yrs old) who decide to drive after partying and then get into a bad accident. Told from Jordan's mom's point of view, readers and listeners see first hand what families go through and the struggles they face when a life-threatening situation like this occurs.
This is the first book I have read/listened to from both the author and narrator. They were both outstanding! The performance of Donna Postel, the narrator, was amazing! Absolutely A-MA-ZING!!! I didn't feel at all like she was reading lines in a book. She was made for this part...she is Jordy's mom in every way. I don't think she could have done anything different to improve her telling of the story. She was 100%!!!
Barbara Taylor Sissel's writing had me engaged in the story from start to finish. The characters and their situations were so real...these things happen in real life. I felt like I was there with the families and I experienced a range of emotions throughout. By bringing awareness to real-life issues, such as alcohol abuse, drunk driving, and certain teenage behaviors, the author was able to also focus attention on other issues that are often overlooked. This book really got me thinking!!! Some people in our world find it easier to place blame on the surface issue, rather than the reason it came to the surface in the first place. Not in this book...these characters start at the surface and dig their way down to the root! It is a difficult (and sometimes unhappy) process, but as a result, growth occurs. I learned that if you ever want to know the truth about others, you must first fully know, understand, and accept the truth of yourself.
I found this book to be 5 stars all around! I recommend it to those who enjoy fictional stories of real-life events involving family, teens/young adults, and the emotional rollercoaster of life that we all go through.
Thank you for reading my review!! :-)
    This familys problems multiplied
There were few individual problems in this family, just huge, complicated ones. The conflict of alcoholic death by car started this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of Girl Waits with Gun returns with another adventure featuring the fascinating, feisty, and unforgettable Kopp sisters.
After besting (and arresting) a ruthless silk factory owner and his gang of thugs in Girl Waits with Gun, Constance Kopp became one of the nation's first deputy sheriffs. She's proven that she can't be deterred, evaded, or outrun. But when the wiles of a German-speaking con man threaten her position and her hopes for this new life and endanger the honorable Sheriff Heath, Constance may not be able to make things right.
Lady Cop Makes Trouble sets Constance loose on the streets of New York City and New Jersey - tracking down victims, trailing leads, and making friends with girl reporters and lawyers at a hotel for women. Cheering her on, and goading her, are her sisters, Norma and Fleurette - that is, when they aren't training pigeons for the war effort or fanning dreams of a life on the stage.
Based on a true story, Girl Waits with Gun introduced Constance Kopp and her charming and steadfast sisters to an army of enthusiastic listeners. Those listeners will be thrilled by this second installment - also ripped from the headlines - in the romping, wildly listenable life of a woman forging her own path, tackling crime and nefarious criminals along the way.
    Critic Reviews:
"Narrator Christina Moore continues to shine in the Kopp Sisters series.... Moore captures Constance perfectly--at times vulnerable but more often a strong and determined turn-of-the-century woman who feels she's finally found her calling. In addition to Constance, Moore expertly gives voice to a cast of secondary characters, including men and people with distinctive accents, making each one a believable individual." (

    Fantastic Series Continues
Stewart has used her unerring research skills and sharp wit to elevate the standard of historic fiction to an entirely new level. I loved book one in the series, Girl Waits With Gun, and was hoping that book two would be up to the challenge. To me, Lady Cop Makes Trouble is even better than the first book. There is more action, so much detail and such a high level of historic accuracy that reading feels like traveling in a time machine.
The plot is taken from the headlines of the time and in doing so lends a feeling of authenticity to this historic fiction detective book. Stewart opens a window into the early 1900s and beckons the reader to climb through and into another world. Descriptive, detailed, exacting dialogue and excellent character interaction and development all converge to create an enthralling book.
Moore's narration is spot on once again. Her use of pauses, sighs and her precise tone and timing really captures the no nonsense feel of the era and the characters she is voicing. Her skilled delivery makes listening a pleasure.
I really am looking forward to book three--I can't wait to see what happens next. Recommended if you enjoy historic fiction with quirky characters, some funny bits and a slice of life from another era. I loved it.
    Excellent!
Highly recommend! What a great story. I'm hoping for a third in the series as I am left with only just a few developments I'd love to see :) , but for the most part - everything was wrapped up very nicely! Would be great for a book club choice as there is mystery wrapped up in the plot.

    HUH?? I'm so confused LOL
Here is another book by Tarryn that I just don't think I completely get! It kept me interested from the beginning and I was enthralled throughout because I had no Idea what was real and what wasn't. I don't think I really grasped what the author was trying to say but that is about me and not her writing style. If it's not black and white, I don't always get it. I will say this was a complete mind f*ck! I love Tarryn's writing style!
The narration was good and fit the character perfectly!
    Loved this journey!
What a trip! This excellent narration carried the story along swiftly and expertly. You can't help but love the main character and all her flaws. Only one part of the book left me slightly confused so I may return to it again to see if there was something I missed. Overall, I was fully involved in this story and wanted it to go on & on - perhaps there is a Margo part 2 in the works? I hope so.
    Not My Favorite
    What disappointed you about Marrow?
I feel that the writing was juvenile while trying desperately to be deep & mature. I don't think this story was nearly as good as it could have been. The writer tried too hard & I think it made the story fall flat in areas that should have been exciting & descriptive. Some parts I feel deserved a lengthy explanation were casually passed over, and left me throwing my hands up in the air feeling like I missed an entire chapter.
Would you be willing to try another book from Tarryn Fisher? Why or why not?
I don't see why not. Although the writing wasn't my favorite I enjoyed her creativity.
What three words best describe Audra Paganos performance?
Weird. Choppy. Inconsistent. The narrator would pronounce names a certain way through half the book and then all of a sudden pronounce them differently and then switch back at the end. It was very distracting. At some parts it sounded like she was stumbling through through the book, like she lost her place. Not my favorite narrator.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I liked the plot a lot, I enjoyed the creativity, I just think it could have been executed a lot better.
Not Really a Thriller, But a Beautiful Book
I'm a mystery/psychological thriller fan, and I wouldn't really call this either...not really suspenseful. However, it was very psychological. What the book lacks in suspense, it makes up for in engrossing language and well written character development. Despite my having expected it to be something different than what it turned out to be, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The author of The Eternal World seamlessly combines history, biotechnology, action, and adventure in this high-concept thriller in the spirit of James Rollins, Brad Thor, and Douglas Preston.
John Smith has a special gift that seems more like a curse: He can access other people's thoughts. The CIA honed his skills until he was one of their most powerful operatives, but Smith fled the agency and now works as a private consultant, trying to keep the dark potential of his gift in check - and himself out of trouble.

Familiar story but still worth it
It's a fairly common "human weapon" story: The operative shaped by a crappy childhood, toughened by the military and desensitized by covert missions who now is out on his own, rich, and paired with a sexy young thing. Add to this plot a somewhat familiar storyline of having psychic abilities that are used for both good and evil. The notable twist is that it's skillfully written and told in a time travel way that doesn't lose or confuse you. Instead it holds your intense interest in two, sometimes three, storylines. To be candid, though, half way through I was ready to give it 5 shining stars, but then in the middle it wasn't that original and it became maybe even a little preachy, but once you get over that hump it is a roller coaster of action and page turning. Oh, and Bronson Pinchot - BRAVO!
    Fan of Farnsworth
Imaginative, as always. Mr. Farnsworth manages to come up with the most implausible characters (his first three novels were about the President's vampire) and make them come to life. His plots are always extremely entertaining. He can't write fast enough for me.
    Excellent Story!!!
Would you listen to Killfile again? Why?
I loved this book, the writing was excellent, I mean really excellent, there are so many authors just throwing words onto a page to get yet another book out regardless playing off their names & previous works, it's sad most especially for the person attempting to read these works. Farnsworth is talented, I haven't read his other books but Killfile was fantastic, highly recommend!
    Outstanding Book...could not stop listening.
What made the experience of listening to Killfile the most enjoyable?
The reader was spot on. The dialogue in this book is terrific. It is witty, sarcastic and very funny. This is science fiction but it is done so well you believe it.

Ironworker Wayne Colson and his spirited wife Carmen are witnesses to a shakedown scam - witnesses who must be eliminated. Enter Armand Degas, aka Blackbird, the brains of the operation, and his partner Richie Nix, an ex-con whose highest goal is to rob a bank in every state. A lively chase ensues when the Colsons enter the Federal Witness Security Program with two bumbling but determined killers on their trail.
With its dead-on dialogue, memorable characters, and absolute authenticity, this is one of Elmore Leonard's all-time great novels.

"Masterful...gemlike...bone-chilling." (Los Angeles Times Book Review)

You can't lose something you don't have.
Not a fantastic Leonard, but still a very good one. Leonard is the master of defining 5-7 good characters, setting them all in motion and writing great dialogue as they orbit closer and closer and eventually either crash into one another or find an unnatural equilibrium. This story is basically a cat & mouse game between two bizarre criminals (One an impulsive shit-talker = Richie Nix. One an French/Ojibway Indian hit man = Armand Degas, Aka Blackbird, Aka Bird) and a middle-aged couple that probably needs to read Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love. They aren't a bad couple. They probably just need a bit of marriage counseling. Oh, and they probably need her mother to move or die.
One of the great things about good or great Leonard novels is not even the main cast of characters but his ability to breath life into bit players. He has a gift for dialogue and a talent for capturing essentials about the human condition in funky misfit characters.
I'll leave my review there because if I write any more I'm tempted to expand into the nature of bureaucracy, the character of local cops, or feminism in crime novels and might just give too much of the plot away. And the surprised and twists are one of the real reasons to read Leonard.
    An Excellent Elmore
The story was a little weak and not especially compelling. The characters were excellent though, beautifully drawn and compelling. Leonard's prose was spare and punchy as only he can be at his best. He IS the Hemingway of crime fiction. McLarty's performance was off the charts, one of the best I have ever heard.
    Great book with one annoyance.
For some reason, the quality of the recording isn't good at all in some places and is quiet even at full volume. This doesn't ruin the book at all, but it's a tad irritating. Great book otherwise.
Killshot A Bit Familar, But A Fun, Insightful Read
I do enjoy Elmore Leonard's cynical and realistic view of criminals and law enforcement. So what do I mean by Killshot seeming familiar, yet fun? There are several key elements in most of his books...
-The law enforcement agencies are made up of redneck, bull headed thugs, with exception of one or two talented cops.
-Federal programs like Witness Protection are almost always protecting snitches who are guilty of equally heinous crimes as those they are ratting out. This turns out to be a real problem for the few truly innocent people in the system.
    - Leonard always does a great job with character development. The bad guys are stupid and cruel, yet wise in the ways law enforcement works. And they seem to have a unique insight into human nature.
