    Really?
The end was terrible. There were too many story lines left hanging. She is told her parents have been found and she has a brother. Not another word about that... story over. Her boyfriend is just left back at the hotel. Someone is killed, maybe by the professors daughter. No denouements on any of the side stories. Aaargh.

    Members Reviews:
Unique premise held up by good storytelling!
I enjoyed Lie to Me mainly for its characters. Each one, whether a minor player or one in a more "starring" role, was well-written to the extent that they all evoked some type of feeling In me, from minor dislike to sort of irritating, to "wow, she reminds me of myself!" Or noticing an appreciation for a good sense of humor. The story is told from different POVs, some positioned as historical to show the background - is there, after all, a lie? Who is behind the lie? And who is the liar trying to protect?
Sometimes our actions have terrible consequences despite our best intentions and most fervent beliefs, those we would fight to the death for. So many things get tarnished over time that no one can put the shiny back into it. For some, no justice can be found. And throughout the plot is the undercurrent of mental illness, and misunderstandings about what happens to those who live with it and the people closest to them.
Overall, well-done, highly readable and enjoyable. The characters often had a flair for the dramatic, not over the top, but appropriate to showcase how the mystery develops. I look forward to seeing more of Jess Ryder's work on Audible and I recommend "Lie to Me."
Good story, Narrator was a bit distracting
If you could sum up Lie to Me in three words, what would they be?
    Mysterious, Curious, and Intriguing
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I love a good mystery to solve in the present that has its roots in the past and when Meredith finds an old video tape in the loft she is drawn into an unsolved murder case that she has never heard of before. But as she watches her four year old self on the old VCR, she is shocked by the story her mother has coerced her into telling on camera and becomes determined to uncover the truth.
What aspect of Lorraine Coadys performance would you have changed?
My one problem was with the narrator there seemed to be background noise or heavy breathing something. It was a bit distracting. I found myself trying to figure out the noise. I wasn't a fan of the narrator.... although I'm not sure if it was the narrator of what it was. There was some type of noise going on and it drove me batty!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I loved the way I became very quickly wrapped up in this book.

    Critic Reviews:
"Though Walsh steps into a different genre, fans will not be disappointed. He continues to infuse historical facts into his books, bringing history to life in this character-driven tale. The pace quickens as events unfold, making it challenging for the reader to predict the twists and turns." (RT Book Reviews)

    Excellent Debut
Dan Walsh has previously written historical romantic novels with great pacing and unexpected plot twists.I have read a few and each is very good. This was his first venture into the murder mystery, thriller genre.
I thought it was very well done. The book was hard to put down. Interesting characters... the author had you caring about their futures.
The narrator was surprisingly very good. This was not a major publication so I was slightly apprehensive about the quality. But the performance was excellent. Voicing of the various characters was distinct and easily identifiable. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look forward to listening to the next mystery novel by Dan Walsh!
Not the author's usual style .... still great!
We have loved all of Dan Walsh's books. While this is a different style for him, he proves he can meet the challenge. This book has his signature romance and humor and adds a lot of drama to the mix. The dream scenes were especially exciting. We are currently listening to the 2nd book and highly recommend them both!
    Awesome Book
The characters & story line were believable & kept me wanting to keep reading. Can't wait to read the next book in the Jack Turner series.
    Weak hero
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was very unexpected and also out of character for the conservative, thoughtful lead character. He suddenly became totally stupid!
How could the performance have been better?
The reader needed more energy throughout.
    Excellent
You will really enjoy this book if you like history....in particular WW2. My hubby REALLY liked this book and it kept my interest throughout the entire 9 hours.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this tour de force, a father, shaken by tragedy, tries to avenge his daughter's murder - and restore his family's shattered life.
It was supposed to be a typical October evening for renowned portrait artist Will Light. Over dinner of lamb tagine, his wife, Sophie, would share news about chorus rehearsals for the upcoming holiday concert, and their teenage daughter, Lucy, would chatter about French club and field hockey. Only Lucy never came home. Her body was found, days later, in the woods.
The Eastern Seaboard town of Port Fortune used to be Will's comfort. Now, there's no safe harbor for him. Not even when Father Gervase asks Will to paint portraits of saints for the new cathedral. Using the townspeople as models, Will sees in each face only a mask of the darkness of evil. And he just might be painting his daughter's killer.
As Will navigates his rage and heartbreak, Sophie tries to move on; Father Gervase becomes an unexpected ally; and Rain, Lucy's best friend, shrouds herself in a near-silent fugue. Their paths collide in a series of inextricably linked, dark, dangerous moments that could lead to their undoing...or to their redemption.

Painful and tragic contemporary fiction novel
The Halo Effect is a well written and narrated audio novel that is painful and tragic. A teenage daughter, an only child, is murdered and her parents seek to find ways to move forward with their lives. He father has more difficulty as he threatens to fall into hopeless despair. Read the publisher's summary before purchasing this novel.
    It tough to endure.
I struggled to finish because there's too many chapters of suffering and not a lot of murder mystery.
    I can't begin to imagine...
I found this book heartbreaking. That's not to say I don't think it is a good book, what I am saying is that the protagonist is a father (Will Light) whose daughter has been murdered. Through most of the book you hear his narrative of his personal struggle with life after his daughter. You see a man who went from a relatively happy home life with a good marriage to a lonely bitter man who purchases an illegal hand gun, has started drinking, has anger issues and whose wife decides to move out and get her own apartment because she can't deal with him any longer.
The ending is a surprise because the story leads to an obvious person but of course that is not the case. You don't find out who killed the Light's daughter until about 20 minutes before the end. That took the predictability right out! Although this book is classified a mystery and you don't know who committed the murder until the end, I didn't find it suspenseful, instead I found it more emotional.
I found the narration to be a little on the slower side and had to listen at 1.25 speed. The narrators did a super job getting the Massachusetts accent.
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
    Thank You.
    terrible
Boring, I skipped through most of it. And the narrators were monotone and lifeless just like the book.
    Complete waste of time.
Yeah just not my cup of tea. Felt like the writer was filling pages with a bunch of random words which made the the story drag out. Way boring.

    LOVE IT!!!!!
Love the accent on the narrator. The storyline is very interesting. You don't want to put the book down until the mystery is solved.
    Don't Waste Your Money
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    People from Britian
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    The British accent.
    Any additional comments?
It was so slow, the British accent sucked. I listened to an hour and couldn't take it anymore. It was a waste of my money!
gripping story, but disappointed in the ending
kept me guessing until the middle, then became too strange. narration was great good book for an afternoon listen
    Not for me
I thought this would be something like Gone Girl but I was wrong. It was a lackluster attempt. The main character was dreadful and annoying. The climax was anything but. And the ending a dull thud. I usually don't give bad reviews but the only thing endearing about it was the audio performance.
Great performance. story slow at part's
Story was a little slow and wordy. I like a little more action. Great twist at the end

    review
Nice introduction to Bartholomew series. good story but at the end a bit too much plotting for my liking
    I don't faultl the reader
I fault the director or producer. I noticed at least 3 instances when the wrong word was said, but it wasn't caught.
    Couldn't finish it
I had read a Bartholomew novel from later in the series, so decided to read this one. I assume the author learned a lot about writing mysteries between this one and the later one. The mystery was boring; the characters very superficial, and the plague episodes were more of an interference than interesting.
Great Intro to a new series
Love that audible has every book in this series. David Thrope does a great job bringing all the wonderful characters to life.
If I could give 3.5 I would. Entertaining enough
What three words best describe David Thorpes voice?
A little on the irritating side when acting the character voices.
Was A Plague on Both Your Houses worth the listening time?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
    No Shardlake but good enough

Growing up in a small town isn't easy, especially when you're the daughter of a local cult leader. Ten years ago, Eden Collins left Clear Springs, Montana, and never once looked back. But when the bodies of murdered young women surface, their corpses violated and marked with tattoos worn by her mother's followers, Eden, now an FBI agent, can't turn a blind eye. To catch the killer, she's going to have to return to the fold.
Sheriff Zach Owens isn't comfortable putting Eden in danger, even if she is an elite agent. And he certainly wasn't expecting to be so attracted to her. As calm and cool as she appears, he knows this can't be a happy homecoming. Zach wants to protect her - from her mother, the cult, and the evil that lurks behind its locked gates. But Eden is his only key to the tight-lipped group, and she may just be closer to the killer than either one of them suspects...
    Members Reviews:
    Not for me...
The protagonist in this story, Eden Collins is an FBI agent. She takes a vacation when she hears of a young woman murdered on her home town where her mother is a cult leader. She grew up in the cult never knowing her father. The sheriff allows her to participate in the investigation in an unofficial capacity. Sounds like it could be a good book, right? For me it was all wrong.
There are two murders and a third woman taken. After that this book falls apart. There are indications of how horrible it was growing up in the cult. She say how evil her mother was. What is missing from both is details. It is never said what made it so horrible and the only thing showing her mother's brutality is her wicked smile or the look in her eyes.
Enough said. I don't recommend this book and am not sure why other people have but everyone has an opinion.
I have listened to Carley Robbins before and although not my favorite I have heard her do better then this.
This book was free on kindle unlimited for anyone interested.

    Thank You.
    Terrible Narration
This is a ridiculous book. Having nothing to do with the awful Narration it just doesn't make much sense. There is no way the leading agent is a member of the BAU as is repeatedly mentioned. But once you get past the craziness of thst you have to deal with the narrator. She is just terrible. Squeaky high pitched tries of sounding like men does her no favors. The writings not bad if you can overcome the other things. Think it'd be better to read than listen. Can't recommend due to the narrator though.
Not what i was expecting (in a bad way)
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not really. The narrator..was bad. Specially her male voices were nasal and whinny. Also she will yelled every sentence. the characters will sound loud and exasperated all the time.
Second...The main character is the worst FBI agent I have ever read before. She is constantly making stupid mistakes, getting herself in trouble and at the same time we will be reminded that SHE IS AN FBI AGENT and one of the best.......
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have change the narrator. Also is a romantic-suspense, lacking in both. There was no connection between the protagonists. Too force. I rolled my eyes several times with the two of them. The suspense was also weak. Not much of a mystery in my opinion.

Would you listen to La reina del sur [The Queen of the South] again? Why?
    Si.

    struggled with it
I spent more time ordering the book then I did listening to the book this book was much too short I overpaid for this
    hmmm
this was an okay listen the ending was kind of confusing for me and I may have to listen to it again to understand why it ended the way it did but and the lead-up to the review word unfairly V6 but it was a short story so I didn't expect much and you really can't cram a whole lot of development or death into a short story
    no good!
Not good at all, was really dissapointed for a James Patterson book. dont waste your credit on this one!

    LOVE IT
A man is supposed to keep his woman, well feed, well dressed and well fucked. That is the best line in the book. My first tears came after Joy, Island's roommate finds her bound in her bed with a man in the room. She sings, Oh my God finally with the religious fervor of seeing Christ raise from the dead. I am listening to it for the fourth time, that part, not the book. Joy is so funny. Her BFF is trussed up looking ready for a BDSM session is about to happen. Before leaving the room, she asks, can I get you guys anything, booze, toys, protection? I dont want to say anything about the book except is damn funny. Oh yea, I am a taking one star because the author plays that same old played plot line of I hate him, I hate him, but his ass really looks good. I want to jump his bones. Hum, I must give that star back. read it and you will know why.
    AMAZING
