The classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.

Critic Reviews:
"A real humdinger. The best MacLean." (Daily Mirror)
"There is a splendid audacity about Where Eagles Dare, in which a handful of British agents invade an 'impenetrable' Gestapo command post...MacLean offers a real dazzler of a thriller, with vivid action, fine set pieces of suspense and a virtuoso display of startling plot twists." (The New York Times)

Great Book, Terrible Performance
This is one of my all-time favorite thrillers. But, in this case, a great book is all but ruined by a truly terrible narrator. His accent is atrocious. He makes Smith and Wyatt-Turner, characters of brilliance and sophistication, sound like uneducated cockneys, who scream constantly.
Please! Do it over, and get Bill Bryson or Micheal Pritchard to do the reading.
One of MacLeans best!
I have been waiting years for Audible to get Alistair MacLeans books. This has always been one of my favorite of his books, a very entertaining and enjoyable wartime thriller. The narrator is wonderful.
Wonderful to have Alistair MacLean available
If you could sum up Where Eagles Dare in three words, what would they be?
The book sticks close to the movie of the same name, which is not surprising when you realize that MacLean wrote the movies screenplay before the novel. Richard Burton's young son complained to his father that he could not see any of his dad's movies, so the actor approached MacLean to rectify this. And to my mind this is perhaps the most thrilling and exciting novel from MacLean and a very easy purchase.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, I know the plot backwards and forwards from the movie but you get so involved in the action that you forget that you already know what happens. This means (for me at least) that this title will have a high replay value
What about Jonathan Olivers performance did you like?
I think Oliver did an excellent job. At first I wasn't so sure about Oliver but as the book went on I got used to Oliver and consider him up there with the likes of Simon Vance (my personal favorite narrator)
Any additional comments?
It's wonderful to see unabridged MacLean narrations on audible. He is my favorite author. I snapped all eight of them at once and look forward to seeing more in the future. Please, Audible let's get the whole MacLean series available. Many thanks in advance :)
A great story, not dealt justice
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Possibly not. I love the story, it is a classic, and possibly Maclean's best work... but.. it is only a good listen if the narrator can recreate this. The producer/editors should also take some of the blame to. This recording is not upto the standard of the 40 year old cassette version!
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jonathan Oliver?
Anyone! (David Rintoul, Toby Longworth, Matt Addis, but as they are soooo good and therefore possibly to expensive to employ)..
