Blood Orchid is the third adventure of one of Stuart Woods' most engaging characters, Chief of Police Holly Barker. This time out, Holly is trying to get her life back together after the shattering loss of her fiancé. With the help of her wily Doberman, Daisy, and her father, Ham, she throws herself back into the job with a vengeance.
At a local restaurant, Holly and Ham meet a gentleman new to the area, rich and dapper developer Ed Shine, who has found an evocative name for both his favorite flower and his latest real-estate venture: the "Blood Orchid".
But before Holly can settle into her routine again, bullets crash into the home of a friend, and a floater is found bobbing in the Intercoastal Waterway. Holly connects these events to the deaths by sniper fire of two Miami businessmen and a man evading questions at a federal agency - but she can't imagine how these violent occurrences could be related to her own quiet, unspoiled town of Orchid Beach. Joining forces with a handsome FBI agent, she tracks the clues straight to their source only to find a scam more lucrative and more dangerous than any this idyllic town - or Holly - has ever seen.

    Great
When is the next one in the series. Like it better than Stone Barrington series.
Blood Orcid is a page turner!
lots of twists & turns! Some surprises as well. a great listen for everyonw. :-)
    really?
a seven year old could figure this one out as soon as the book began. And the "bresthless" voice of Holly would not instill respect as a Police Chief from anyone outside a strip club. My very first review but her voice was so annoying and the plot so shallow I had to fo it.

    Books great, narration flat.
I want to start out saying that I am a big fan of J.L. Drake's books. I have read both series. Five stars for the books. They are well worth reading. I was looking forward to getting them on audio, but when I started listening to Darkness Lurks , I was very disappointed in the narrator. She lacks emotion. I could have turned on my Kindle's electronic reading and almost got as much emotion. Someone is stocking the heroine and you would have thought the narrator was telling you what she had for dinner. It had that much felling. I would have given the narrator a one star but I could not do that to the stories themselves, they are great.
    CAPTIVATING STORY; PAINFUL NARRATION!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
A new narrator. This narrator is painfully monotone.
What did you like best about this story?
This is the third series by J. L. Drake, and it's just as captivating as the first two--Broken Series and Blackstone Series.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
This is one of the most monotone narrations I have ever heard. These books deserve much better narration.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Yes
    overall good but narrator monotone
Good book but narrator was not the best. She has a very monotone voice. The girl should sound like a girl. I had to take a break from the book
    Boring narrator
This is a great book, however, narrator was extremely monotone. Slightly disappointed as I love this series.
    Very Bad Narrated
I listened to whole Broken trilogy from J.L. Drake and absolutely loved. I decided to give a chance to this book and I can't tell I enjoy it. I finished it since I bought it but this book was so far the worse book I ever listened.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
When Special Agent Will Robie gets the call to make his first visit home since he was a teenager, it's because his father, the local judge, has been arrested for murdering a man who came before him in court. The small, remote Mississippi town hasn't changed, and its residents remember Robie as a wild sports star and girl magnet. He left a lot of hearts broken and a lot of people angry.
Will and his father, Dan, are estranged, and his mother left years ago. When he visits Dan in jail, he finds that time hasn't healed old wounds. There's too much bad blood between the men, and although Will feels no good will come of staying around, he is persuaded to confront his demons by fellow agent Jessica Reel.
But then another murder changes everything, and stone-cold killer Robie will finally have to come to grips with his toughest assignment of all. His family.
    Members Reviews:
    Hard to Believe
The story was very convoluted and hard to believe. It needed a 10 minutes story from the bad guy to explain what happened.
A Good Read, But Not Baldacci's Best.
As a massive David Baldacci fan, my expectations for this book were set high. I love the Will Robie series, and always want more of him.
Before I say anything negative, I want to say that this book is by no means bad. In fact, it has a mostly good story line, with plenty of twists, keeping you guessing until the end. I think that Baldacci, in writing a book like this, gives the reader a deeper look in to the background of Will Robie, not as the government assassin, but as the person, who left home unannounced two decades earlier, and never came back.It gives us possible reasons as to why Will Robie is the person he is today, and why he does what he does for a living. Of course Jessica Reel is there to help Robie, and I'm glad to see that she features in this book.
When writing a book like this, that takes the main character out of his or her natural setting, there is always a chance that the book will not live up to expectations. One reason for this, is simply that we want to see the character in the same setting we're used to. In this case,we want to see Robie as a government assassin, dealing with the deceit and complexity of the shady world that comes with it. In this book we don't see that. Yes there are various scenes in it where Robie and Reel do what they do best, killing, and there is certainly deceit and complexity, but it isn't quite the same. There are two main reasons why Robie has decided to go home after so long. One, because his estranged father has been accused of murder, which is plausible, the second (I don't want to give away anything about the book here, so I'll try to be vague), is because of something that happened to Robie on his latest mission, which he would class as a terrible mistake, which, as reasons go isn't all that plausible. The second reason, is very weak, and not very believable, not in terms of the mistake itself, which is believable , but in the use of it as a reason for Robie to return home. The mistake itself could have happened, and could, and probably would have caused a lot of distress to Robie, but the way it is presented as a cause for Robie to deal with certain issues from his past, doesn't work for me, The likelihood of the two things happening at around the same time is unconvincing.

    Bit of a Rip Off
The short itself was decent enough w/ average narration, but not for the price. Especially considering a good portion of the title was an excerpt from an upcoming book... You're barely getting an hour of good story, then some teasing of the new novel.. Given this not worth a credit or the price...
    So short for the price
I love the Sigma series, but this was deceivingly short. I think main story might not of been more than an hour with the bonus/tease story at the end just as long! The main story was good, but I feel like I was fooled.
Great short story in the Sigma Force saga
Definitely for Kowalski fans and takes a slightly different approach than the longer novels. Narrator is so easy to listen to.
    The Midnight Watch
Awesome, book to listen to or read. I could not stop listening. I listened to to the entire
A little steep $$ for just over an hour
If you're a diehard Rollins fan, wait for the price to go down, if not don't bother. I feel cheated & played.
Narrator's pace was difficult, had to replay the beginning 3 times to get the gist.
However, I am still looking forward to the next book.

5 stars for the incredible ending!!
I rated the first three novels in the Jack Noble espionage/suspense thriller series 4 stars. Noble Intentions gets 5 stars. Like the earlier novels in the series this one has a strong plot, lots of action, intense suspense and excellent narration. But the ending of Noble Intentions is absolutely stunning, and that makes the difference. Listeners who like almost any mystery/thriller sub-genre such as suspense, espionage, modern detective, etc. should give the Jack Noble series a try.
    Over the top....
I really enjoyed the other Noble stories, but this one was A little Extreme. I did like that in this story we get to hear viewpoints from all the different characters. What I didnt like was that every situation in the book turned into someone killing somebody. It was just over the top for me.
    Stunning Ending!
You don't want to miss this L. T. Ryan novel. I loved the ending. What a great way to head into the next novel in the series. I'm hooked on this author and this series.
    Kick A$$
Awesome book very well written and narrated by a champ. Thanks for all you both do. Can't wait to listen to the next book.
    Kind of long in parts.
This book wasn't as good as Deadly Distance. It was kind of windy and far fetched at times. It also went in So many different directions at times. S

    Terrific, simply terrific!!
An Act of Treason is my first Jack Coughlin novel, bur it certainly will not be my last. Everyone who has an appreciation for great thrillers should read this book.
Great Series, Great Characters, Well Written
First, the story line teaser from the jacket isn't accurate, but then what else is new? As with the previous novels in this series we see the unflappable Swanson always thinking moves ahead, he is a talented survivor. There are interesting twists, surprises and the characters aren't cliche. The pace is fast making it difficult to stop listening because you want to hear what happens next. Totally enjoyable action series with good story lines and characters. Luke Daniels does a wonderful job narrating.
    Wow Wow Wow
All four books in this series keep you in suspense and leave you wanting more. The realism is incredible and the main character is not impervious to injuries and capture like many other series' characters.
I hope this storyline continues with many more books. Like the Mitch Rapp series, I'm hooked.
I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with their purchase of this novel.
Miles to go before I rest!
This is the best book of the series to date. The characters come alive, the story line is exciting, the human compassion (a new addition) is inserted in a great way. The consequences of action are shown graphically through the story, the villains are portrayed very well, and their brutality will catch you off guard.
Really enjoyed this one ... More to the book than just another terrorist book!
    Awesome book!!!
Couldn't stop listening. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend the entire series.

    Critic Reviews:
"Ngaio Marsh at her intelligent best." (Times Literary Supplement)
    "Superlatively good." (Sunday Times)
"Astoundingly good...moments of pure hilarity set among moments of real fear. Masterly." (Daily Express)
"Really excellent...a proper and classic detective story." (BBC)
    Members Reviews:
    Nicely diverting
Improbable situation with Alleyne aboard a ship en route to South Africa trying to discover who among the peculiar little group of passengers is a murderer, if indeed one is. Of course, he figures it out, but we don't until we have had a very good time listening to a brilliant reader do all sorts of wonderful voices as we sail with our favorite sleuth from foggy London through the torpid tropics south.
    Ending was Meh
It was not her best work. Characters were irritating, the setting underwhelming, and the ending fell flat. All this compared to her usual work. Still a good listen.
    Spoilt by the narration
Where does Singing in the Shrouds rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This was a different format for a marsh novel set almost entirely on board ship. Unfortunately the narrator over does all of the characters to the extent that it is almost pantomime.
What did you like best about this story?
The story is excellent and the end is a good twist
Would you be willing to try another one of James Saxons performances?
    No
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No
    Atmospheric but a bit obvious
    This was well narrated and
built up an interesting atmosphere on the docks and on the boat where the action takes place. But, the story was a bit thin, so not one of my favourite Marsh novels.
Good, but sound quality is a bit varied
Shame the sound quality dips in an out, because generally James Saxon reads a good Inspector Alleyn. Probably an old recording, transposed to digital - could have done with some tweaking to iron out the variations in volume, and fuzzy quality to some of the reading.
Story is up to Ngaio Marsh's usual standard.

    Publisher's Summary:
In an apocalypse, there is definitely a beginning where mistakes are made and the seeds of evil are allowed to sprout and take shape. However, an end is not so certain. Once an apocalypse occurs, not even death is certain. Sometimes, death is only the beginning.
At first light that morning, Dr. Lee steps into the Walton facility on the first day of human trials and can barely contain her excitement. The labs are brand spanking new and everything is sharp and clean. They've been built to her specifications and are a scientist's dream. It's where cancer is going to be cured once and for all.
By midnight, it's a place of fire, of blood, and of death - a death that, like the apocalypse, is seemingly never ending.
    Members Reviews:
    Very good story.
I wasn't sure what to expect from reading the publishers summary, and then reading listener's reviews. I don't think many reviews or the summary did a very good job of describing this story. I will say this to try and help whom ever is reading my review. This isn't the typical zombie book, which is a good thing in my opinion. This story is about the origin of an outbreak. Some people aren't fully turned into zombies and you get some of their point of view. The rest is about how the people at ground zero react to what is happening and about how the disease spreads. It's worth the credit.
    Finally. What a great story.
This is great. The last 3 books I've purchased were so poorly written that I didn't finish them... But this one is outstanding with excellent narration. Very well thought out story. The zombies are cool... Actually gives perspectives from the zombies POV too! Honestly, this book is refreshing... Not just another predictable cookie cutter story with a main character that is annoying. Anyways, I listened the sample and it intrigued me, so I purchased the book. Very glad I did. It's one of those that has me wanting to listen even after my long drives are over.
    Good listen
A break from the usual zombie books. Here the author actually draws out the path of infection... it's not book in which the characters wake up to a world filled with zombies . Refreshing
breathe taking new view on zombies
What amazed me most is that this book is all just the first capsulating the first day. And it's view point and mind set of pre zombie to full infected was a revolutionary aspect.
Great start to what can be an outstanding series.
I like stories that jump right into action, this story was a little different. each character is nicely developed as is the creative cause of the zombie outbreak. The setting is consistent throughout the story (a situation I do not usually like) but it works in this story. looking forward to the next edition.

    Another hit for Lee Child
Even when Child's book isn't his best, it's still great. I'm never disappointed with the narrator, my real Reacher, who perfectly depicts the large, enigmatic protagonist. As usual, the antagonist were a bunch of dudes who didn't know when to leave well enough alone. The biggest question, does he ride off into the sunset alone or with a companion?
    Enjoyable read
I had to read the book to get a better understanding of the characters next time I will get the unabridged
    copy but it was ok
    Lee Child, Oops
How I enjoyed the earlier, full lenght, books by Mr. Child. Jack Reacher roamed and rambled, his musings on the life he lead and the lives he saw around him as satisfying a read a visiting with wise old great uncke at a family reunion. In this short book, I did like the story, shocked at the ending, in fact, but yhe overall read left me feeling I'd rented the Cliff Notes.
    Fast and Gripping
A true Lee Child. thriller. narrated well by Kerry Shale.. could have been longer.. didn't want it to end in just 4 hours..
    poor
poor compared to rest of the series. feels like it rushed through what could have been a really good topic.

Should have really been three and a half stars
The story development, as usual, was great. And then...the puzzle gets solved. The explanation was too farfetched. I will definitely read the next Camilla Lackberg. I just hope she gives the mystery a little more thought.
    A real puzzler, but...
I enjoyed the psychological ins and outs of this mystery, but in the end I felt manipulated when characters figure things but the reader is left guessing what those details are. Vance is an excellent narrator and I always enjoy his reading. I like the detective and his clever wife and their relationship.
Everything was great until the last paragraph which was just too over the top for me. I won't spoil anything, but I really did not like where I got dropped off - cliff hangers are highly overrated.
    What?!?!?!?
Everything about this book was great...until the end. It was so random. What a disappointment!
Stoopid People, Stoopid Novel, Stoopid Cliffhanger.
I've been on a Scandanavian mystery binge lately and have really enjoyed discovering some great authors. This is not one of them. The women in this novel, especially Ericka, are set up to be SO much smarter than the men, who, to a man are bumbling fools lead around by the nose of their empowered wives and girlfriends. At least two dozen times lead characters didn't answer cell phones leading to unnecessary complications and misunderstandings. Every man, except the Dastardly One, are henpecked idiots. Potential readers should be warned that this novel ends on such a contrived cliffhanger that it beggars belief. Simon Vance is amazing, as always.
    Goosebumps...
I've never read a book that gave me chills and goosebumps all over my body. I want to find Camilla Lackberg and just stare at her for 15 minutes in complete wonderment and angst over this tale and the ending of this book. Absolutely Fabulous. Completely fulfilled my need for a Thriller. Wow!
