    Publisher's Summary:
To most people, Maj. John Rexford is a retired marine living in the Catskill Mountains of New York on disability. Even John's girlfriend, Maggie, has no idea he's really a CIA spook recruited in Afghanistan and assigned to kill enemies on US soil. With exemplary skills in hand-to-hand combat and small-arms weaponry, John Rexford completes a string of successful kills, eliminating terrorists and their money supply in the New York metropolitan area. With the FBI hot on his trail for these illegal assassinations, John must find a way to stop an international team of explosives experts from destroying New York City's aqueducts, killing thousands with chlorine gas, and burning the five boroughs to the ground. During his mission John runs afoul of a high-level underworld assassin who uses his mastery of yoga to silently strangle his victims. When the assassin discovers John's one liability - his girlfriend, Maggie - John will have to make a terrible choice between her life and the capture of her abductor. This tightly scripted story begins with a terrorist plot and gradually turns into a clash between two professional killers, with the lives of both John Rexford and Maggie hanging in the balance. As the characters collide with deadly force on the streets of New York in Cut and Cover, the line between right and wrong blurs, long-standing loyalties are questioned, and no one is really sure, even if they succeed, what the final outcome will be.
    Critic Reviews:
A resounding character study just as much as it is an action novel, and both are equally triumphant. (Kirkus Reviews)

    Reluctant Spook
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book was okay I enjoyed some aspects such as the creative assassination plots, but other than that I had a lot of trouble staying focused on the story. I wondered off frequently hoping the book would hurry up and end
Would you be willing to try another book from Kevin Hurley? Why or why not?
I am not sure at the present about listening to another book by Hurley
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Again the performance was a yawner
Was Cut and Cover worth the listening time?
Just the creative ways to kill that was the interesting part
    Entertaining story
Good solid narration, fast paced and exciting story. Enjoyable. Found some parts hard to follow as there was a lot of jumping around but this didn't take too much from the experience.

During a routine but dangerous Opti task, Peri Reed finds out her trusted partner has made her a corrupt agent. Her unique ability to jump back 40 seconds in time to correct a mistake leaves her vulnerable when her partner, who is responsible for replacing her memory of the event, gives her a false one. Not as good as I expected...
I have a huge love for the Hallows and the universe surrounding it. So, I had high expectations for The Drafter as well, seeing how much I love Kim Harrison's writinh and Rachel Morgan.
I found this book tedious. I was waiting the entire time for some ephiphany from Peri to lead us into some place new and awesome. Instead I found that she got stuck and was lost in her own head over and over and over again. Same scene, different guy over and over.
I still think Peri has potential in the hands of Kim Harrison. I just wish the story had really gone somewhere and not just stalled out and gotten stuck.
    Interesting
*** Possible Spoilers*** I love the characters, the plot like is very good but Zi am just wondering hoe I am going to adapt to the shift from Urban Fantasy to Futuristic Urban science fiction. I'm not complaining just yet. I already care about the people involved in this twisted struggle but it is a giant leap from magic to tech. I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone from picking this book up it is very well done! This is just my personal hang-up. I am hoping to work through it because I want to see Silas and Peri find the love that they were both too afraid to share! One thing I was truly hoping for was more interactions with Carnac! He seems very important yet he was just relegated to the role of a cat. IS he a psychic cat? Does he have some tech way of communicating with Peri! L
Didn't Think I Would Like It, But I Did !
Would you consider the audio edition of The Drafter to be better than the print version?
I enjoy the audio versions of most books better as I listen to the story while falling asleep. I enjoyed the narrator of this series very much.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Drafter?
As with all Kim Harrison's work I enjoy her ability to completely shake up the plot line. The most memorable moments for me were the complete plot shifts.
Have you listened to any of January LaVoys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't believe that I have heard Ms.

    Members Reviews:
    Good mysteries... lacking back stories
I want to like Avery Shaw... really, I do. I like that she's her own person, but the angry tirades can only go so far... things start getting redundant and there are some (minor) inconsistencies that are definitely more noticeable when you listen to three books straight in a row.
*SPOILER ALERT * I'm somewhat flummoxed about Elliot's magically becoming a private investigator with absolutely no intro or explanation in Book 2. I get adding layers to the character and needing something for the story that you hadn't realized was necessary in the previous book, but there needed to be some sort of introduction to the idea before he just announces some chick is his client... it was totally out of the blue! Have Avery walk by a window and see a flyer announcing his side job... say she hadn't heard from him in months but a story comes across the news desk involving him helping solve some minor crime... anything other than just pretending we all already knew!
    Too rude and crude
What disappointed you about Breaking News: Avery Shaw Mystery Books 1-3?
I enjoy series books because you find a character that you like and with each new book it feels like an old friend. Audiobooks bring that character alive. But Ms. Shaw is immature, rude and vulgar. She does not seem to like anything or anyone. The characters all act very immature ,like high school. and she confronts everyone. Sorry I chose this book(s).
What could Amanda M. Lee have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Authors fault, not Amazon
Would you listen to another book narrated by Angel Clark?
Yes, she seems to have a good range and you cannot blame her for the words.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No, nothing for me.
    Any additional comments?
If I want to hear rude, offensive conversation I will watch the Republican's debate. But at the end of the day I want to listen to classy, well spoken and nice, everyday people who run into a lot of murders.
    Wow where do I begin
Would you recommend Breaking News: Avery Shaw Mystery Books 1-3 to your friends? Why or why not?
I would if there was a different narrator. The narrator mispronounces many of the words. Like crochet as croquet. This makes it hard to listen to. The voices she does for the male voices are the same but also are annoying.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Angel Clark?
I would have cast just about anyone else. Seriously.
    A funny cozy mystery
Avery is 27 years old. Shes mouthy, opinionated, and bossy. She is an only child, a Star Wars junkie, a news reporter for the Monitor. Her clothing choices do not please her mother or boss, Fish. When faced with the smart thing to do or stupid, she selects the stupid.

    Title: The Patriarch
    Subtitle: Bruno, Chief of Police

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-15
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 186 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
A beloved village, a renowned family, a suspicious death - it's the latest adventure in the Dordogne for police chief Bruno. When Bruno is invited to the lavish birthday celebration of World War II flying ace and national icon Marco "the Patriarch" Desaix, it's the fulfillment of a boyhood dream. But when the party ends in the death of Gilbert, Marco's longtime friend, it's another day on the job for the chef de police. All signs point to a tragic accident, but Bruno isn't so sure. There is more to the Desaix family's lives and loyalties than meets the eye.
There is Victor, the patriarch's son, Gilbert's old comrade-in-arms and sometime rival; Victor's seductive wife, Madeleine, whose roving eye intrigues Bruno even more than her fierce political ambitions; Yevgeny, another son, an artist whose paintings seem to hold keys to the past; and the patriarch himself, whose postwar Soviet ties may have intersected all too closely with Gilbert's career in Cold War intelligence. Bruno is diverted by a dangerous conflict between a local animal rights activist and outraged hunters - as well as meals to cook, wine to share, and an ever more complicated romantic situation. But as his entanglement with the Desaix family grows and his suspicions heighten, Bruno's inquiries into Gilbert's life become a deadly threat to his own.
    Members Reviews:
    Big disappointment
I enjoyed the earlier novels in this series. They always included a moderate dose of political evangelism. Unfortunately this novel is mostly unbalanced political diatribe that makes heavy use of the strawman technique. The ghostly thin plot, when one can find it, is flat and boring. Let us hope the author has exorcised his political demons and that the next installment in the Bruno series returns to form.
    Great for atmosphere-disappointing ending
Love the author's obvious regard for this region of France. I listen to these for the description of life in Perigord and to follow the characters to which we've been introduced. This novel ended abruptly with loose ends that didn't quite fit together. A lackluster effort on the author's part.
    Too many characters
May be my least favorite Bruno story so far. The Russian connection and inter family intrigue was rather tiring. Found Bruno's romance out of character. He is smarter than that.
Slow, light, and not worth reading any of his others
This story features a French policeman in a quaint French town who likes food, drink, his dog, and friends. That's the whole story. If you want to read a book about how the French eat, you might find this charming. If you want a well-paced mystery, characters that develop, humor, depth, or a memorable read, this author doesn't deliver. The mystery is very thin, the plot is slow, and character development is nil. It's ho-hum at best.
    same old same old
Somehow I missed the Patriarch by Martin Walker when it came out. I was looking around for something to read, and check to see when the next Bruno Chief of Police novel comes out. I discovered that it came out in June and not only did I miss the release, but I also missed one of the previous books in the series.
It is odd that you can read a series and not notice when you miss a book. And once I finished reading The Patriarch, I am can see why I did not realize that I missed anything.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a mysterious case of illegal cactus smuggling comes to their attention, Chet and his human PI companion, Bernie Little, find themselves in a prickly situation in this eighth book in the New York Times best-selling mystery series. In the latest entry in the immensely popular Chet and Bernie mystery series, Private Investigator Bernie Little and his canine companion, Chet, return home to encounter some alarming developments. First off, Bernie's wall safe - normally hidden behind the waterfall picture in the office - is gone, and with it Bernie's grandfather's watch, their most valuable possession. And next door, old Mr. Parsons is under investigation for being in possession of a saguaro cactus illegally transplanted from the desert. Bernie and Chet go deep into the desert to investigate. Is it possible that such a lovely old couple have a terrible secret in their past? Chet and Bernie discover bad things going on in the wilderness, far worse that cactus smuggling, and all connected to a strange but innocent-seeming desert festival called Arrow Bright. They unearth leads that take them back to a long-ago kidnapping that may not have been a kidnapping and threaten a ruthless and charismatic criminal with a cult following, a criminal who sees at once what Chet and Bernie mean to each other and knows how to exploit it.
Every bit as "insightful" (Booklist), "humorous" (Library Journal), and "deliciously addictive" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) as Quinn's previous books, Scents and Sensibility is a drool-worthy mystery that will have listeners everywhere begging for more.

Only a cliffhanger, only a cliffhanger, only...
What made the experience of listening to Scents and Sensibility the most enjoyable?
I have loved the Chet and Bernie series since the very first one. Many reviewers will suggest that a love of dogs is needed to truly love this series and that maybe so but I doubt it. Chet is so great.
What did you like best about this story?
True to his personality and character, Bernie invested himself with single determination to his case. Despite the uncharacteristic lapses and the foreboding ending I refuse to believe that Scents and Sensibility took all of Bernie.
What does Jim Frangione bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Oh Jim Frangione no one else could voice the mental wanderings, excitement, joy and loyalty of Chet, the Jet.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did and I want the next one immediately and with a happy conclusion or I am thinking it will be, "an orange jumpsuit and breaking rocks in the hot sun" for Mr. Quinn.
Always a kick to live inside Chet's head!
Story takes some unexpected turns. such a fun doversion. want the next one sooner than usual for reasons that will be apparent.
    Can't get enough.
I always go through a little internal debate about this series. He repeats himself a lot and uses the same scenarios over and over - and yet - they are still fun. Perhaps you have to be a dog lover. I know with my dogs, they love familiar actions.

    Unexpected endings are refreshing
Enjoyable listen for a light read. Not too intense but also a decent storyline and unsuspecting culprit when all said and done. If you are looking for a fast paced intense book this isn't for you. If you are looking for a fun little read to pass time, enjoy yourself a bit without having to think too much, this is for you! I listened to it on my way home from work as a way to unwind. Very enjoyable. Great narrator too.
    Mediocre writing and performance.
The mystery itself was fine, but the writing could have benefited from a bit more editing. The performance was marred by awful accents.
    Good Cozy
I enjoyed the 2 previous installments in this series. Fun, light cozy mystery with lots of humor and excellent narration (Hillary Huber is one of my favorite narrators - good range of "character" voices and she does male voices very well too!). This book, however, was just too silly. I could not even get behind the story, just sort of outrageous/ridiculous/convoluted all the way through... The ending was out of left field, just kind of pulled out of nowhere... I will purchase the next book in this series (if the series continues), hoping that it will be better than this "slapstick" fluff...
    Another great book
love this series. would recommend this book . can't wait to start the next one.

Only on audio! A brand-new, never-before-published Stephen King short story unavailable in any other format!
Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call accident rich; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach.
Across the lake, they can see what real rich looks like: the Massimo familys Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Aldens Ma says is paid for by ill-gotten gains courtesy of Massimo Construction. When Aldens holiday-weekend sparklers and firecrackers set off what over the next few years comes to be known as the 4th of July Arms Race, he learns how far he and the Massimos will go to win an annual neighborly rivalry - one that lands Alden in the Castle County jail.
Read by beloved Down East storyteller Tim Sample - praised by Stephen King for his wit and talent and good-heartedness - Drunken Fireworks makes for explosive audio listening.
    Critic Reviews:
"[N]arrator Tim Sample unfurls the story of an escalating rivalry with precision.... Sample's sardonic delivery peppers a sordid narrative with moments of flippancy, and by grounding the dialogue and characterizations in specificity, he keeps a tight reign on King's kaleidoscopic sense of detail. An odd, enjoyable summer listen, and an excellent recommendation for non-horror fans who are interested in King's work." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
I Think Stephen King Knows My Neighbors
Being from a rural state, this wild romp is totally believable. It's a different genre for King.. pure humor and character development. Maybe for some, it borders on the incredible... but not for me. I know these people.
I expect the usual reviews from all the readers who will complain that it's not horror. (It's like readers obligate King to stay in that genre, or by God, he will hear about it).
But the bottom line is that he always nails it, and is the benchmark for most anything he puts on paper.
    Let the man write.
This story is just pure fun.
Would you consider the audio edition of Drunken Fireworks to be better than the print version?
Absolutely! It would be a good read - but the audio version takes it to a whole new level.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character and his mama. I love his New England accent. Plus, he says some uproariously funny stuff.
Have you listened to any of Tim Samples other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is the first one. I'd like to hear some of his other work.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    One-upsmanship - a cautionary tale.
    Any additional comments?
I can see this being a movie.
    Not the usual fare
I love it when Stephen king wanders off his usually horrific track and dishes out some tasty, stick to your ribs, down home tale of the poor down trodden getting their revenge in the most unexpected way-- love this story! Still, kinda waited on an axe murder to occur at any moment...
A taste of down east humor.
This is a charming tale of a rough but proud New England family. The dramatization is flawless and hilarious.
Love it! Fun for 4 th of July. A Big Bang
Wonderful narration. Great use of local color. Constant readers and others will love.

    Members Reviews:
    Good fun
This was a lighthearted fun short story. You know if it has Helena, it's going to have laughs. Just when you thought she couldn't get any weirder, she finds a live person who wants to emulate her. I like the narrator from the Mudbug series better. After adapting to the change in voice, it was ok. Anytime they put Helena in a book, I'll read it. Big belly laughs from her.
    Rose and Helena
Good story but I did not like the reader. No clear difference between different voices.
    A Disappointment
What would have made Rose and Helena Save Christmas better?
A better narrator. The attempt at southern accents was appalling.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Hard to focus on the story
Should not be included in the Ghost in Law Series
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I was expecting a Ghost in Law book which I consider the Mud Bug Series. I thought this would be a cute Christmas short but I don't know if it's because it's a different narrator or what but I could not get into this book. Helena did not have the same charisma and endearing qualities as in the Ghost in Law books. I couldn't even finish listening to it. Ugh.. Horrible.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I think it could probably be a good read if Johanna Parker narrated the Ghost in law characters. They should have used 2 narrators so the characters kept the same voices. Helena is terrible in this book.
What didnt you like about Shannon McManuss performance?
I could barely tell the characters apart from each other. It was really awful.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment and a little anger. If the 2 authors were going to collaborate they should have done everything they could to keep the original narrators for each character. I'm assuming the narrator is the narrator for the other series.
    Any additional comments?
I wish I had not wasted my money on this audio book. I learned a valuable lesson to make sure and check the narrator before buying anything.
    3 hours was too long
I dont know exactly what Jana DeLeon worked on for this book, but I dont think it was the writing or casting the narrator.

    little family was dreamy.

    Publisher's Summary:
    P. I. Spenser, knight-errant of the Back Bay, returns in this stellar addition to the iconic New York Times best-selling series from author Ace Atkins.
What started out as a joke landed 17-year-old Dillon Yates in a lockdown juvenile facility in Boston Harbor. When he set up a prank Twitter account for his vice principal, he never dreamed he could be brought up on criminal charges, but that's exactly what happened.
This is Blackburn, Massachusetts, where zero tolerance for minors is a way of life.
Leading the movement is tough-as-nails Judge Joe Scali, who gives speeches about getting tough on today's wild youth. But Dillon's mother, who knows other Blackburn kids who are doing hard time for minor infractions, isn't buying Scali's line. She hires Spenser to find the truth behind the draconian sentencing.
From the Harbor Islands to a gated Florida community, Spenser and trusted ally Hawk follow a trail through the Boston underworld with links to a shadowy corporation that runs New England's private prisons. They eventually uncover a culture of corruption and cover-ups in the old mill town, where hundreds of kids are sent off to for-profit juvie jails.

    Thanks Ace.
Ace has the Spenser act down and only Joe's voice can be Spenser. This is one of my favorite Spenser stories.
A GOOD ROBERT PARKER WANNA BE
I like the Spencer series and have read most of them. Ace Atkins does a good job. I feel as if the glib Spencer is becoming of a parody of the original. too much glib, not enough strait line for me. I think it detracts from a good story. The humor benefits from being in balance and not the main event. The story was good, but so much "personality" detracts from creating some depth and drama. This will not keep me from continuing with the series. I enjoy the non horrific and entertaining nature of these mysteries. I listen alot at night and don't want to have bad dreams.
    Really enjoyed this
What made the experience of listening to Robert B. Parker's Kickback the most enjoyable?
I have always been a Spenser fan, I am so glad Ace Atkins has been able to keep the character alive
Spenser and Hawk are always entertaining!
A good story very close to Robert Parker's style. Sixkill is good but you can't beat Hawk! It was a pleasant surprise to find a new Spenser book.
    Vintage Spenser
Robert Parker lives in the prose of Ace Atkins and the voice of Joe Montegna. They have Spenser captured to perfection. The "he saids" are still there but in much less number. You get the style without the aggravating repetition which was only emphasized in listening to the books being read. Joe handles this masterfully. Five stars all the way.
