Cute, romantic fun

Mostly I'm writing this review because of the bad one that almost made me not buy it. Is it predictable? Sure. But I don't expect a lot of twists and turns in what is essentially a fairy tale. I listen to romances for the romance, the flirting, and hopefully some humor. This book has that in spades, and is an enjoyable, light listen. I recommend it, and plan to get Good Girls Don't next.

Also: Cougars? Really? I don't think a 35-year-old woman dating a 29-year-old man is a cougar. It's only a 6-year difference!

Not Her Best Work

I have loved Victoria Dahl in the past, so when I saw that this book didn't have fabulous ratings I was a little surprised. I decided to give it a chance thinking maybe people just didn't get her style of writing. Unfortunately however it was not her best work. I had a really hard time relating to this story. Not due to the age different between the two main characters but instead the story line was just dull. I hope someone else can find joy out of it, it just didn't compare to her past work however. Better luck next time Victoria.

Need a new voice!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I liked the story, but since I listen while on the road it was difficult as the narrator sounded like she was whispering whenever she would switch characters- annoying.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Whispering when switching characters. Ruined it for me.

I love these characters

Jamie Donovan is the guy for me! Fun loving on the surface, but with a bit of himself he keeps hidden. He has a lack of confidence you don't see in very many leading males, but to see him gain it keeps the story moving. And Olivia's growth into her true self is a great parallel as well.

I like the setting of the trilogy, perhaps because I've been there and know that Boulder is "24 square miles surrounded by reality".

Tedious torture

This book is about Indigo Wolf, the daughter of Hunter and Loretta Wolf from Comanche Moon, and the niece of Amy and Swift Lopez from Comanche Heart. Its 15+ hours of torture! I think the writer has a knack at describing human emotions and inner turmoil, but 15 hours worth is just tedious. I could understand and empathize with Indigos struggle to cope with her inferiority complex, mistrust of men, and terrified misgivings of sexual intimacy, after all she had a horrible thing happen to her at the age of 13, something that would cause scars to remain on most any woman. However, after listening to it described repeatedly for 12 hours, I just wanted to scream, get over it! The long repeated descriptions of her angst ruined the book for me. I got it, I understood, I empathized, I ached for her, but after about 5 hours, it just turned exhausting. Im not exaggerating when I say, Its 12 or so hours of Indigo struggling with personal demons, then everything is wrapped up a little too quickly in the last 2.5-3 hours of the book. She forgives her husband a huge lie, a little too easily, and the suspenseful ending is so cornball, I was rolling my eyes. The narrator is horrible. She has an old lady sounding monotone voice and her pace is painfully slow. Listening to her read the big love scene is somewhat gross, sort of like your Grandma reading soft porn aloud. Yuck! Oh and you will laugh when you hear her pronounce the word, areola. OMG!

Excellent and well paced romance and mystery

I hesitated to purchase this book because the previous review was lukewarm. However, I love Catherine Andersons style and have enjoyed the Comanche series. I am really glad I went with my gut because I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the third in the Comanche series. Catherine Anderson has a slow and deliberate style which may be frustrating to readers who want things to happen quickly. However, I find it refreshing and more realistic as the characters unfold and develop at a natural and more believable pace.

It is the story of Indigo, the only daughter of Hunter of the Wolf and his Anglo wife, Loretta (both introduced in Comanche Moon). Indigo is a nineteen-year-old beauty who enjoys living with her parents, working in her fathers mine, and talking with her animals. Without revealing his true identify or his great wealth, Jake Rand comes to town to investigate a series of dangerous accidents that have occurred at the mine, one of which injured Indigos father, Hunter. The story unfolds into a romance pursued by Jake and resisted by Indigo. Interwoven is a suspenseful mystery, as Jake gets dangerously closer to discovering who is behind the mind explosions.

Boring chapter of two - fill it with something?

SPOILER ALERT: The looooooong drawn out chapter(s), to get to the point where Jake fiiiiiinally bedded Indigo, was stupid. There were so many OTHER interesting options the author could have taken during that period of time, to get the story to that "moment".

Good Story...BAD Narration

I really enjoy Susan Mallery books but I will never purchase another book narrated by Gayle Hendrix. The story was great. It was cute and at the end I was smiling, which is exactly why I read this kind of romance book. However, the narrator was just awful! She shows no acting ability at all. Her voices barely differ from one character to the other and she not consistent with their voices. It makes it very hard to keep track of who's speaking sometimes. She is just flat through most of the book. I asked my 15 year old son to read a couple of pages aloud to make a point and he did a much better job. Doesn't someone listen to these people before they are hired to read? If I wrote a book, I would make sure that the narrator read the book to match how I have written the characters and are able to bring the book to life. The entire reason I get audio books is for the actor who reads it to bring it to life for me while I listen. This was no better than listening to the computer voice that reads the pages from my kindle.

What's with the narrarator?

I love almost all Susan Mallery books and this was no exception, but the narrarator was awful! She sounds like an old woman which meant that it was like having my grandma read me steamy sex scenes! Her various secondary charachters ended up having weird accents that did not go with the story. Read the book yourself, don't have Gayle Hendrix do it for you!!!

Not great

It was very cliche... a jaded(arguably misogynistic) douchebag rich hero who's had bad relationships with the women in his life meeting a sweet selfless and practically stupidly naive heroin and reluctantly falls for her as she thaws the ice around his heart with her love blah blah blah. Very very predictable story. On top of that the hero and heroine had no chemistry that i could detect... the bots that were supposed to be sweet were just blah and the parts that were supposed to be sexy were just a bore.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I honestly felt like the hero's description of what he felt for his ex was full of more heat and passion than what he said he felt for the heroin. i was also not a fan of the heroins's martyr stunt; it was truly annoying and stupid... especially considering the fact that the hero said he didn't want his ex back.

I got bored

The story felt too unreal for my taste. About half way I got bored but I can predict the ending as a HEA for the teacher and CEO.

Bad narration - she emasculated the hero.

The cadence and pitch was so hard to listen to that after about 2 hours I gave up and quite listening. I think it could have been a good story but I just couldn't listen any longer. Really, who pauses after every 3 or 4 words?

Really good book!

This turned out to be a really good listen! Just one word of caution -- it has a very complicated storyline and you need to listen very carefully or you will be lost. It's not a story you can listen to casually while doing other things.

I hate when i can't finish a book--it's just such a waste. However, the narrator was the worst I've ever heard. I just couldn't get through it. He read with a snarky attitude that had nothing to do with the story or the characters. Save your money and time

Much better than the Publisher's Summary indicates

The "Publisher's Summary" is really misleading. It makes this book sound like a sex-at-the-office-but-no-plot story, and that is the furthest thing from the truth. This is more of a legal/political thriller -- granted, it's not a real intense thriller and there is a definite romantic subplot, but there is much more to it than the summary indicates. It's a very engaging story, and well read by this narrator. I enjoyed every minute of it!

pleasant reflections, not for thrill-seekers

Enjoyable musings on romantic love at the edge of old age, especially if you also love gardens, so that the frequent descriptions of seasonal beauties of plants, flowers, and landscape architecture, which are essential to the meaning of the book, will come alive in your mind. However, if you're looking for an action-filled plot or wild, nubile sex, this isn't the one for you. Small quibbles with the artistry: the book does seem a bit short, and not as vivid as I might have hoped. But to be fair, the book does just what a novel should do: tell a specific story and then stop. The story is simply a small one, a tiny slice of a particular kind of life at a particular time in life. It seems clear that the author loves nature; and indeed when I looked up her other works, they are mainly books for children and the plots rely on some aspect of nature. The fact that she usually writes for kids helped me understand her rather gentle approach. Narrator is fine.

If you garden and love a great love story this is a most read.

This book tells the story of Maggie and Tristen and their love for each other and for the gardens they create. Maggie a widow and stroke survivor meets Tristen the landscape architect and the rest is magical.

It will make you smile, cry and want to learn more about plants and gardening. Maggie tells great stories of her past and Tristen tells Maggie all about the gardens he created for his daughters through the years. It is a true love story.

Did not want it to end!

I really really loved this book. I listened to it on a 7 hour drive and was thoroughly entertained. I was so in to the characters and found parts very heart warming. I enjoy books about family issues. I see this book had mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it very much. I wish that the author would write a sequel. I recommend this book. I will now look for another book by Ms. Forster. I like her style.

What made the experience of listening to Blues from Down Deep the most enjoyable?

The main character gets to know her family. Building a relationship with each.

The Grandfather - in his own way he wanted to see his family become closer and accept each other.

It reminded me of Black cultural views in the South. Skin color appears to be so important.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blues from Down Deep?

I would have to say it was when Juliette was in the hospital and everyone was saying she had had an abortion. Rumors spread like wild fire. Family was the main instigators.

What does Sharon Washington bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Excitement, the story made me feel like I was back at home in the Mississippi Delta.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

When I read a synopsis of the story, I really wanted to hear the entire storyline. I lived in Hawaii and the author hit the nail right on the head when describing how Polynesian men treat their women. They do not view any work outside the home as relevant. Some are quite sexist.

Any additional comments?

This was a Great read, I love Gwynne Forster, can't wait to listen to another one of her books.

The narrator's ok, on occasion forgetting to change her voice in changing character, not the romance novel I thought it would be. It was a drawn-out family reunion.

Family dysfuction

What did you love best about Blues from Down Deep?

This is my second audio by Gwynne Forster. She is an excellent writer and has a gift for understandable English. The many characters are extinct and memorable. Dysfunction can be recognized in families; but there are always a few who are loyal and attached without reserve. This story is about family, many of which can be close, distant by blood or via marriage.

Very Steamy!

At first, I was a little skeptical to get this book. That was until I started listening, immediately I was into it! I usually listened to audio book to help me nod off into sleep and I found myself staying up until 4am to hear more. Although the ending was predictable and I felt the author could of put some of the details off until closer to the end. Only because I immediately knew what was going to happen. But as for the thrill and romance, it burst out of my ear buds and left me begging for more! It's defintely worth the money and very good!

I just could not get into this story because i hated the way the main character acted, stupid, selfish and bitchy. I got most of the way through it and just gave up, I skipped through the rest of it quickly to see if it somehow got any better, it did not.

I'd give it 3.5

This is an interesting story but it could of been so much better.I did like the realization of the damaging and sometimes unexpected consequences of your actions. It wasn't a book that swept me into it. It has some interesting twists though. This one was is good enough for me to be satisfied with if I had gotten it on sale but not enough for using my credit. It does have strong sexual content but not the "steamy hot sex" that you get from Maya Banks, Shayla Black, Lora Leigh or Olivia Cunning, which I think are the best authors out there. So save your credit for the good ones and if this one happens to be on sale it's worth a try.

It doesnt get much worse than this...

This was such a bad book that I wanted to throw my fairly new Iphone out the window! If I were in front of a fire, it would have been chucked in with no hesitation. If you are looking for repetitive scenes, with no merit whatsoever, buy this book. If you are looking to be entertained, move on. I cannot say enough about how bad, boring, and painful it was.
