Paradise Dull

The later books of the Target range of Doctor Who novels are notable for having given the writers of many stories from the eras of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors a second crack at their stories. On the surface at least, that is exactly what writer Stephen Wyatt did when he novelized his 1987 story Paradise Towers for the range about a year after broadcast. Yet, given the reputation of Paradise Towers as a TV story, does the novelization improve it?

The novelization allows Wyatt to show the story he originally intended, before casting and production values potentially harmed it on its way to the screen. The Kangs are teenage girls rather than the considerably (and obviously) older versions seen on in the TV version. The Caretakers ineffectiveness and obsession with their rulebook is given a new dimension as they are portrayed as fat, often middle aged men rather than coming across as a bad rip-off of the Keystone cops. Pex isn't the wimpy would be action hero of the TV version but instead is as physically different from the TV version of the character as one can get. The result of all this is that Wyatt's original vision of Paradise Towers shines throughout the book.

Yet that vision isn't necessarily a good one. The basic idea at the heart of Paradise Towers is an intriguing one and really an idea worthy of a classic Doctor Who story. The execution of the story itself is anything but. Wyatt's second crack at the story might fix a whole number of other issues in the story but it doesn't fix the two basic problems with the story: it's a runaround with no real threat and it's a badly written black comedy. In fact the comedy comes across worse in here than it did on TV. Wyatt's original idea is all but buried amongst a poor execution.

So does Paradise Towers the novelization improve upon Paradise Towers the TV story? Yes and no. Yes, it does improve upon the characters seen in the story by allowing Wyatt's original intentions to come across. No, it doesn't fix the issues with the poor execution of a bad idea. This novelization of Paradise Towers therefore is really only for the Doctor Who fan seeking to fill in a gap in their Target book collection.

Build high for happiness

Agreeing to take Mel to a luxurious swimming pool to allow her to relax and recover, the Doctor sets the course for Paradise Towers, a great living environment built to house people. But when they arrive, the place is very run down and populated with people who have broken down in tribes - the Caretakers, the Rezzies, and a variety of all-girl Kang tribes.

GREAT EARTHSHOCK!

I am a Big Doctor Who fan and this was one of my favorate videos. The audio version is great. Every bit as good as the vid.

Most definitely! Peter Davison was always my favourite doctor and this story with the cyber men was one of his best.

The doctor of course! Although I think even if Peter Davison hadn't been the doctor I would still have enjoyed his telling of the story.

Earth shock was always one of the best stories, even with the dodgy special effects of the old doctor who tv series. Listening to Peter Davison telling the story is fantastic. Of course the audio story also gives that much more depth and I was surprised how much more I picked up listening to the story.

This was a great chapter in the mini series. David Troughton son of Patrick Troughton the second Doctor is in this episode. He gives a great impression of his fathers Doctor Character. The Scarf is alive.

The Doctor and his friends have adventures in the fairytale Aladin. This is a tale for all the people who like it when fairy tales come alive. As a bonus the Doctor's Scarf after all these years comes alive and speaks. A very impressive tale. I can hardly wait to hear the rest of series.

A bit difficult to get through

I fell asleep twice as I was listening to this book. The second time, I didn't catch the ending, and I didn't really care. Maybe it's the amount of characters in the story or the general storyline, it's difficult to keep track of. After I was through it, of course, I figured it was pretty good and there was that underlying truth that makes Doctor Who so appealing, but it was definitely a tough read.

This is a very good story especially by Doctor Who standards! Would've made a darn good episode. Pretty dark actually. Narrator did a really good job keeping me engaged. I can't say she reallyeven had to do any voices. There was just something about the way she read that made it listenable. I will likely listen again at some point

So-so

I believe that there was a good story in there somewhere, but sadly I had a hard time seeing it. The author wrote a weak story, I am sorry to say, which is unusual for this writer. The last few he wrote have been very good and fun to listen to. Also, the narrator was not the right one for a Doctor Who story. I understand that the setting for the story is in New York City USA, but the characters of Doctor Who are from the UK and the accents need to reflect that. Unfortunately the narrator did not seem able to perform a feasible Scottish accent (Amy), nor a believable British accent (Rory and the Doctor).

That being said, it is a passable quick listen for when you are doing something around the house - like washing dishes - and don't want to have to concentrate too much on the action or the storyline.

And the Doctor saves the world again!

Doctor Who: Blackout is a great episode. Like all the crazy adventures the Doctor has, this one brings excitement to an hour of listening pleasure.

What does Stuart Milligan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The different voices that Stuaret Milligan can achieve brings the storyline to life. He brings stronger characters to the front, leading the listener through the tornado of a storyline.

Blackout!

What did you love best about Doctor Who: Blackout?

In this story, the Doctor and his companions face an unknown enemy with unknown weapons that seem to be making people go into their own.personal supernova.

What did you like best about this story?

It was written exceptional well and the narrator was fantastic.

The scene in the power room with Amy and Rory and their mysterious foes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really any particular part, just the whole book.

Worth a Listen

New York is under attack! Not War of the Worlds style attack, but attack none-the-less. And the Doctor doesn't just want to fix problems, but needs to this time around.

This story was a good, solid story that fit well into the Doctor Who universe. Nothing new and exciting about it, but certainly a fun story to enjoy.
