Excellent performance but linear story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Meera Syal does great performance, as usual. The story, however, lacks the usual twists and blind alleys of Doctor Who tales. Part of the problem is that this is short.

Have you listened to any of Meera Syals other performances before? How does this one compare?

I chose this because of other Doctor Who she has done and her performance adds 2stars to what it could have been.

Extremely exciting!

Another interesting and fun Torchwood story involving peculiar aliens. Kai reads the book with much verve!

Interesting story

I really enjoy the narration of Kai Owen and the story is fun and kept me interested the whole way through.

Well done!

I love these little audio novellas, and the main members of the Torchwood team have read most of them. This is the 2nd I've listened to that is read by Kai Owen, who plays Rhys (Gwen's husband) on the show. Kai does a very good job with these, and he does different voices for the characters, even voicing Captain Jack Harkness without a British accent. I will be looking forward to more books, Torchwood-themed or not, read by Mr Owen.

The story itself is pretty good, an interesting take on the things that may be hanging around in the deep corners of a traditional old department store.

Start of the Key to Time and intro Romana

The first story in the Key to Time season, this book adapts a number of important events: the meeting between the White Guardian and the Doctor, which commences the sequence, and the arrival of new companion, Romanadvoratrelundar (or Romana for short, even though she's rather be called Fred...).

Adapted by Ian Marter from a great script by Robert Holmes, the attention to detail is good and the reader is treated to something other than a bare-bones adaptation, as is so often the case with these novelisations.

While perhaps the simplest story in the Key to Time sequence, I don't see this as a fault. Indeed, it allows the reader to relax into the more complex ideas introduced at the start of the book and get to know Romana, without bombarding us with some of the more convoluted story lines that later became normal for this season.

(Incidentally, the second story in this sequence, 'The Pirate Planet', was never turned into a novel.)

The epic begins and a top supporting cast

This one kicks off the Key to Time saga, a year of Doctor Who shows that covered the Doctor's quest to retrieve the Key to Time for the White Guardian. He is assigned a new assistant, Romana, to help him in his quest. He also has his faithful robot dog K9 with him. Together they seek out the first part of the key. This novelization has slightly more character development in it then most, particularly with respect to Romana and her relationship with the Doctor.

For a change the Doctor does not save the world, or even a portion of a world. Instead his mission is to retrieve the first of six pieces that make of the Key to Time. The key is needed to restore an imbalance in the universe that threatens everything in it. What do you think, can he do it ? :)

The Ribos Operation is the start of the very groovy epic Key to Time sequence. Here, the Doctor meets the White Guardian, and is told what is in store for him.

He is told he is going to get some help, and Romana the unpronounceable quickly appears, settling on being called Romana. Luckily, he still has K9 to protect him from the woman who at the times seems to be wavering a little towards the harridan end of the personality spectrum.

First Doctor Who where ending isn't soon enough

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, I wouldn't recommend it. The story just will not die... it goes on and on and on even though you *know* exactly how it's going to end before the book is halfway read.

Has Doctor Who and the War Games turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not a chance. One bad apple and all that

He does Jon Pertwee *perfectly*

Maybe. Some visual distraction might make the story better.

I've never watched, listened to, or read a Doctor Who episode where so many humans get killed, particularly by firearms, and most of them get at least two lines worth of description of their death. It makes the characters "throwaway" since you know they're all equally likely to take a bullet or get shot by a "stun gun" that is "set to kill mode" (Doesn't that just make the thing an ordinary gun that can be set to "stun" mode?)

I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who but this was the very first story where I could not wait for it to end after I had listened to the first half.

I forced myself to listen to the end just on the off chance there was a very clever plot twist that I was too thick to anticipate. Alas, if only I were that thick. The plot simply splattered on the ground exactly the way one expects of any other falling cow patty.

Great adaptation of a child hood favourite story

Loved the adaptation. David Troughton bringing his father's incarnation to lfe. I enjoyed reading the target novelisation when I was a ghild and was delighted that David Troughton had read the audio version. i found it easy to listen to and would recommend this audio to fans of old sixties who.

Truly Classic Doctor Who

David Troughton did a magnificent job. Where some narrators come across as dull and disinterested, Troughton brings more life to an already wonderful story. 5/5 all the way.

Be careful what you wish for.

Bad beginning. An absolute idiot of an obsessed stalker gets what he wants, and more. Pretty predictable so far. And not very interesting.

Then it gets better. The story goes somewhat beyond the obvious. Great ending. All in all a (slightly) better than average episode.

A great episode. Reads a bit like "Groundhog Day" on death row, but is more complex and layered than that. Very dark. Highly recommended.

Pretty good "I can do anything, moahaha" story. Most of it is kind of a running inner monolog by the protagonist. Story is simple but effective. Sound effects and supporting actors are good.
