losing that faith and then being shown the way once again is the greatest trial of all to survive
To have faith and be drug through the dirt by the evils of this world, losing that faith and then being shown the way once again is the greatest trial of all to survive. This is what the main character in K.R. Morrisonâs âBe Not Afraidâ â Lydia â and the entire family of Lydia goes through. Being a woman of faith, Lydia finds herself in a situation that even a person of faith cannot believe. She is kidnapped by a vampire and turned into one, killed by the vampire, andâ wellâ. I wonât ruin EVERYTHING. I can see where there could be an opening to continue the trials and tribulations of Lydia and her family for a long time to come.
While this is obviously a book that revolves around faith, there are enough elements from the fantasy and mythological realms that make it a very intriguing and enveloping read. Whether or not you have faith of any kind, please take the time to pick it up and read it. It took me a while to get through because of life but I was finally able to find time to get back into it and I finished it in a mere couple of hours. This is definitely a book that those with faith, without it, recently lost it or looking for it need to pick up.
    Great Read!!
I don't normally have time to read suspense books, but I'm glad I made an exception for "Be Not Afraid". This book kept my attention throughout, which is not an easy task. I was hooked from the first chapter till the end. Great Read!!
    be not afraid
At first I thought another vampire book but it goes much deeper.it is a story of evil verses good it talks about all religions. The author makes you feel lydia fear anger sorrow. I was up until early morning to finish it. It is a book I will read again
    World pretending
KR Morrison's debut book is a tour de force, reminiscent of the works of Frank De Felitta and Just Cronin.
Lydia is married to a loving husband, and is a devout Christian. But when she is abducted by a shadowy creature of the night, her faith is put under a strain that she could never imagine.
What follows reminds me of a classical reworking of the trials of Job, as everything she has worked for is stripped from her, and she questions the tenants that she has founded her life on, as she is transformed into a hideous vampire.
Then, in her darkest hour, she receives a divine message the she is to be one of the Chosen - a messenger of God who is to prepare mankind for the coming war between good and evil.
This tale is lifted high above the general morass of fang-'em-ups with it's message of hope, and the authors expert understanding of what the vampire represents.

    Intriguing Series
This is the third book of this series I've read. The concept and setting are my favorite parts. I'm not wild about the first person voice in this book. There was a lot of blow by blow action--cooking, eating, filler info--while I waited for the story to continue. I enjoy the details, but to an extent wished some had been edited out for more relevant or interesting ones. One scene in particular involved hunting for real estate, it seemed to involve so much detail, yet the final action sequence didn't.
Of course I'm now awaiting the next one in the series! As I said, I like this storyline.
    Enjoyed and recommend.
Hope there will be another book in the series.
A Solid Stand Alone within a Series
I would like to thank LibraryThing.com and Pati Nagle for a chance to read this book. Although I received this ebook for free, that in no way influenced this review. Since the rating system here does not offer half-stars, please know that I rate this book at 3.5 Stars!
    The campus killer is back...
...and this time bright, sensitive Steve Harrison finds the mutilated corpse. When he realizes the cops suspect him of the brutal murders, he calls a friend for support and is drawn into a secret world of magic, wonder, and dread. A circle of impossibly beautiful men guards the campus against vicious, inhuman hunters. Steve's education, his love life, even his survival is at stake once he learns what the police don't know:
    The killer is immortal.
I was drawn into this story from the very beginning, though when I realized a large part of the focus would be on a male to male relationship I worried that it wouldn't work for me. Thankfully I couldn't have been more wrong! The sex scenes weren't described in graphic detail, instead focusing more on the emotional aspects of a new relationship - something that everyone can relate to, regardless of sexual preference.
Steve is a wonderful protagonist, smart, attractive, and emotionally sensitive. After discovering the mutilated corpse of a student in one of his classes he texts an acquaintance / friend, Amanda (Manda for short), as she of all people is sure to understand what he is going through, between the shock of the discovery, and the cops treating him as a suspect. A year or so earlier Steve had helped save Manda's life, back during a rash of murders on the campus. It was then that he'd met Lomen, whom he'd carried a torch for ever since. That one simple text sets off a chain of events that are to forever alter the course of Steve's life.
Manda brings him to Caeran's house, a man who looks eerily like Lomen, enough so that they could be brothers.

Step into the shadows with the first of a series that blends deduction with suspense...and blood. Dru Lorand is not a commonplace vampire - he's an Inquisitor, chosen by the elders of a most sanguine and secret society. His role is to investigate sedition and punish treason among the undead, of whom there are clans, factions, and territories. He's made enemies over the centuries. He's dealt with many of them, with the help of myriad assistants, even gargoyles as spies. But now a mysterious party has broken one of the cardinal rules governing vampire society.
"What atonement is there for blood spilt upon the earth?" (Aeschylus)
A terrible threat that could lead to madness unleashed on an unsuspecting world causes Dru to embark on an epic journey. From the posh clubs of Philadelphia to hidden monasteries in the Alps, bloodlines are being drawn and Dru's fortitude will be tested as he discovers A Warning in Blood.

Don't Miss this Mysterious New Vampire Tale
A Warning in Blood is a fresh and sexy take on vampire legends. Inquisitor Dru blends a hard-boiled detectiveâs instincts and insights with an ancient vampireâs hard won and world-weary wisdom. He is the perfect guide to a story that ranges over centuries and across continents, from hidden vampire realms to the streets of Prague and Philadelphia. The next installment can't come soon enough.
    Really
How many stories and shows can there be about vampires. Almost as bad as the Twilight series, these just happen to be gay vampires.
    Waste
I loved you Fontana mystery series. I couldn't get through this one. Why vampires? Because it's trendy? Worse reason yet. Let me know if you go back to writing mysteries. Otherwise...
    WHAT??.......WHY??
This could have been told in one book. Y 2? I don't get it. If it's money u were after, u should have made the book longer and charged a little more for it. It is not worthy of being a cliffhanger.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but I felt I cheated. Just as the story was pacing nicely it cut off. Y?
    A Vampire With a Conscience
In this first novel in the series, Joe DeMarco gives us a whole new take on vampires.
Dru Lorand is a smart and sexy vampire with a caring side. As the Prime Inquisitor for the Synod, Druâs job is to investigate crimes among the undead and help maintain the status quo that has allowed vampire clans to exist in relative harmony over the last centuries. Now, all of that seems to be threatened when heâs plunged into an investigation to determine who it is that has been turning childrenâa terrible taboo that could cause ultimate destruction and one he finds despicable. Working from his base in Philadelphia, Dru enlists the aid of several interesting characters, including a gargoyle to help him unravel the mystery in this fast-paced and well thought out thriller.

Love all of the Black Jewel Series
Love all of the Black Jewel Series, I actually purchased them at this time for my sister as a Christmas gift. My sister had read the first 3 but hadn't had the opportunity to read any of the others so I purchased the entire series for her. She loved the first 3, I'm sure this one will be no different. These books are definitely not for the kindhearted and I would describe them as dark and disturbing for most of the series, they can be graphic, horrifying, fantastic, whimsical, saddening and much much more. I have found myself actually laughing out loud, and crying so hard I had to put them away for a while. I've read and reread them probably close to 10 times and can say that I feel they blow most other writers and writing styles out of the water. Everyone is all about 50 Shades of Gray for its sexual content and heat but, in my opinion, nothing beats these books in that aspect as well as many others, I find myself wishing I could step through the pages and live in their world. These books are definitely something you read with an open mind and they are by no means written for children. Heir of the Shadows was a fantastic read but I felt it started off a bit slow. Waiting for things to progress was so hard for me, I like them to go go go from the very beginning but I loved the story once it picked up.
    Wonderful continuation
Jaenelle is healed in body, but her spirit is still damaged. Lucivar is still imprisoned in the salt mines and Daemon walks in the Twisted Kingdom. The second book in the Black Jewels series is just as good as the first and a great continuation of the story.
I read this when it first came out and I've reread it many times. Each time I find more to ponder: the role of women and men in a society, the responsibility of our leaders to the land, and the raising of teenagers are all interwoven into the story. This one isn't quite as dark as the first book but has its moments.
The world of the Black Jewels is complex. I find it amazing that Ms. Bishop tracks it all so well. I'm also reminded in this reread of characters that are echoed in her latest series of The Others (just as good a series).
    Addictive writing in 3..2..1..
The first book was a little rough, but this one started to take off and I was hopelessly addicted to this series, and then everything else Anne Bishop ever wrote. I burned through several of her other series as well. She writes really good characters, knows how to use sex and violence in the service of the story, and--this is childishly comforting, but I need it the way the world is these days--the bad guys are generally stupid and get what they deserve in a blast of righteous vengeance.

Facing dangerous odds, prejudice, and violence, Nexa finds strength in those around her and, ultimately, love. Epic, stunning, and absolutely mesmerizing, Shadows is the unique and original story you have been waiting to listen to.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting concept but marred storytelling
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    1) Better editing. There are places where words or entire sentences are repeated. Also there are a few places where obvious errors have not been corrected (e.i. having just had breakfast but referring to the meal as lunch).
    2) Slow the pacing. The author's writing doesn't spend a lot of time on world building, I think because the author is rushing to get to the love interest/romance section. Since I picked this up under the Sci-Fi category I wasn't expecting a YA cliche.
    3) Include character development since there really isn't any. Nexa goes from a member of an oppressed species who guards caves and can barely fight to leading arms and becoming a tactical genius with little time spent to develop such skills.
    4) Dump the romance between the two main characters, it's very cliche.
Has Shadows turned you off from other books in this genre?
I'm not sure, what is this genre? As I said this was listed under Sci-Fi and I've read worse Sci-Fi books then this. It reads more like a book aimed at tweens though. Given the excessive insta-love that's happening I can't even really call this Young Adult though it's closer then Sci-Fi.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christy Crevier?
Oliver Wyman, Gover Gardner, Christina Moore or Jennifer Van Dyck
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shadows?
None that I can think of.
    Any additional comments?
The author has a solid idea but I think her rush to do the whole romance thing spoiled what could have been a great idea. Also with poor editing and less then stellar narration it wasn't the best book I've listened to, nor the worst.
    Perfect!
Another great story by Cheree Alsop! I hope she writes more about this series and gets in put on Audible for us non readers please. I found this story to be mysterious, intriguing, and very unique in a great way. This story was action packed, suspenseful, and many twists along the way.
This is a narrator that I have never heard of before until listening to Shadows. Christy Crevier did a superb job with the telling of this story. I'll be looking to more stories that she's narrated in the future. Overall, a 5 star rating!
    Not Recommended
I Would not recommend this book. While the story had promise it did not deliver. Both the characters and the plot fell flat. I found the story moved very quickly but did not have enough deepth for me to be invested in the hardships of the world or connect to the characters. Also the book was full of clichés and I found the narration to be grating.

A perfect blend of: eroticism, mysticism, and science fiction!
It is the year of our one, 2587 ... in the great city-state of Topaz. Karla and Joseph escape from the soulless Tehotep through a mystic wormhole summoned by the Guardian Opal, and find themselves 400 years in the past. It is The Time of Legend.
Immortal II is a whirlwind of mysticism, intrigue, and horror. Its characters are deep and palatable. Its landscapes are beautiful and tragic. Valjeanne Jeffers is a master at weaving a tale that combines eroticism, metaphysics, and hard science fiction in a way that is natural and addictive.
No other piece reads like the Immortal series. The experiencer is transported to a place where one forgets that they are reading - but instead finds themselves living the characters; breathing in step with each passing page. Ms. Jeffers creates a tormented antagonist in Tehotep. A Daeman ... someone I grew to hate in book I, but almost felt sorry for in Immortal II ... almost.
Karla, a beautiful Indigo woman - her presence in the world spanning across time: her memories reaching back to her lover Joseph: a handsome copper man. His integrity and insight captures Karla's heart in a world and place beyond even the Time of Legend.
The Immortal series is a self-contained universe: complete with it's own language, history, and culture. If you dig intelligent speculative fiction seasoned with eroticism and mysticism, then run to this piece. I can't recommend Immortal II enough. And if you haven't already, treat yourself to Immortal: book I!!!!

    Meddling Spirits Outwitted.
Ji Yuan, desperate to help his dying brother and only relative, goes to a pair of spirits rumored to help out mortals. But the spirits are motivated by the urge to meddle in the lives of people asking for help and wager on the impossible choices that doom the mortal caught in their trap.
As Ji Yuan tries to accomplish the task that will save his brother he is drawn into the lives of other mortals who are also entrapped in the machinations of the spirits. The story follows Ji Yuan as he finds a way to untangle the trap and save his brother without dooming his own future to misfortune and bad karma.
The story is well written, and the characters interesting. The story is set in San Francisco during the gold rush period, providing a glimpse into the experience of the Chinese trying to get by in a foreign and hostile land.
The narrator does a good job of handling Western and Chinese accents, which makes it a pleasure to listen to.
I found this gem by going to the very end of Audibles list of fantasy titles, proving it is worth the effort to ignore the 'popular' titles that Audible constantly and remorsely 'recommends'.
