Publisher's Summary:
Victor Standish, street gypsy living on the haunted streets of the French Quarter, should live in fear. But his is a philosophy of defianceand love: "No one's life should be rooted in fear. We are born for wonder, for joy, for hope, for love, to marvel at the mystery of existence, to be wounded by the beauty of this world, to seek truth and meaning, to hunger for wisdom, and by our treatment of others to brighten the corner where we are."
Alice Wentworth, a Victorian ghoul, will one day be his demise when the hunger for his heart is over-ridden by her hunger for his flesh. But until that night, they cling to one another as they seek to survive the supernatural dangers of the secret French Quarter that few in New Orleans know about: Evolved raptors who prey on the street people in the alleys.
The European Empress of Vampires stealing into the city, waiting to conquer New Orleans with her minions. And the Demigod of Eternal Night who fling them back into the last century in order to destroy their mentor, the man with death in his veins, Samuel McCord. Can they win their way back to the present before the demigod of Eternal Night or Hurricane Katrina destroy all they love?

A Four and a Half Star Legend
The ongoing tale of the inimitable Victor Standish continues in this second book of the series. Although it could probably stand on its own merit, I'd recommend reading the first book, um... first. ("The Legend of Victor Standish")
The excitement level ramps up a bit in this book, as even more creepy creatures seem to be hellbent on inflicting great pain and death on young Victor, who is still dwelling in the scary shadows of New Orleans. But his ghoul friend Alice is still by his left side, (closest to his heart) and a number of other memorable friends from the first book are in his corner, too. Ghosts, and vampire-like creatures help him in his fights against vicious raptors that swarm like cockroaches, and all kinds of demons. But Victor is the real hero. His speed, fighting ability, and all sorts of emerging powers make him the stuff of legends. He and his friends make a strange family, but a family they are, in more ways than one. But what can they do to protect New Orleans from the rapidly approaching Katrina? (Gonna have to read the next book to find out.)
Once again, this book is laced with a good mixture of history and humor, and I'm amazed at the imagination of this writer. It kinda tickled me that I was questioning the romantic and sexual interests of thirteen-year-old Victor, because... here I was reading about vampires, ghosts, demons, and the angel of death... and the only thing I was questioning was the likelihood of a thirteen-year-old having those kinds of thoughts and feelings. Too funny. I reckon that must mean this author did a pretty doggone good job of making those unusual characters seem real, dontcha think?
Yes, More Victor Please!
More adventures, more courage, deeper insights, and revelations. I'm not going to give anything away, but Victor's make-shift family is tighter and in more danger than ever. And, we learn the identity of his real father!!!!!
If possible, I liked this installment even more than the first. A good sequel is hard to do, and Roland has done it with heart and style. Now, to go get the third one!
Yes, this is a must read!
Victor is...
