    Publisher's Summary:
Psychic visions, visits from ghosts and telepathic connections. Must be time for date two.
For Lauren, there's nothing particularly scary about seeing ghosts or experiencing psychic flashes. After all, this is the world she knows. Still, none of that prepares her for suddenly connecting with the mind of Vicky Stearns, a girl she's never seen before. Lauren has no idea what caused the connection to happen or why, of all the people in the world, she received this psychic distress call. Her confusion soon turns to fear when she learns that the girl went missing earlier that same day.
There's only one person Lauren can think of with abilities keen enough to help her navigate the visions gripping her. Jack, the boy whose own psychic awakening drew them on a journey across the country together last summer. But Lauren hasn't seen Jack in nearly a year. She also gave him every possible signal that it was over between them, hoping he'd be better off without her in his new life. When Lauren sets out to unravel the mystery, she knows only two things: This will be her last chance with Jack and her only chance to save Vicky Stearns.

    A quirky YA Psychic Mystery
SERIES INFO: This is Book #2 of 3 (so far) in the Streetlights Like Fireworks series. Book #3, Distance, is available now, with the audio version coming soon.
This is a book that can definitely stand alone; but youll miss out on the subtleties of the central relationship if you dont read Streetlights Like Fireworks first. Plus that is an excellent book, which I am planning to go back and re-read (in audio this time) now that I have finished this one. Ill post a review when I do. Note: Because Jack, rather than Lauren, is the protagonist of that story, the book has a different (male) narrator.
I have struggled with how to say this - in Book 1, the characters had certain problems, attitudes, and characteristics. In this book, the characters have changed realistically as a result of what came before. They are not just the same people dealing with the same problems in the same ways. I liked the level of growth (or lack thereof). It was not so little that Book 1 seemed irrelevant, nor so much that they werent the people I came to love on the first trip. That is an area where some less experienced authors struggle, they change the relationships without letting the characters mature.
Jack resolved his central problems in the first book and is beginning to make the transition from Young Adult to New Adult as he prepares for college. He is centered and stable. Lauren on the other hand, didnt find what she was looking for, and is stuck unable to move either forward or back. She is lost and she knows it. When it comes to their abilities, however, Jack is still a bit ambivalent while Lauren thinks shes got it figured out.
The story starts by jumping into the mystery, but then wanders off into character exploration for awhile. This is the place where people who havent read the first book might be tempted to quit (obviously I think you shouldnt). Once they hit the road, however, the pace remains steady, with a good mix of actively pursuing the answers and quietly exploring their relationship. And the resolutions, both in the case and in their lives are satisfying.
I would have liked to see Jack participate more with the psychic stuff, rather than being mostly emotional support.

Livvy Flynn is a big deal - she's a New York Times-best-selling author whose YA fiction has sold all over the world. She's rich, she's famous, she's gorgeous, and she's full of herself. When she's invited to an A-list writer's conference, she decides to accept so she can have some time to herself. She's on a tight deadline for her next book, and she has no intention of socializing with the other industry people at the conference.
And then she hits the detour. Before she knows it, her brand-new car is wrecked, she's hurt, and she's tied to a bed in a nondescript shack in the middle of nowhere. A woman and her apparently manic daughter have kidnapped her. And they have no intention of letting her go.

    Daughter Loved It!
I bought this book for my daughter for her 11th birthday. She had already read "the Raft" by the same author, and was very interested in the "the Detour ". The book came fast and in as far as I could tell, new condition. She then proceeded to blaze through it in about 2 days and loved it!
    BEST BOOK
    This is a must buy.
    It was okay
I liked Bodeen's The Compound and this book seemed to follow the same light, fast pace development.
The Detour touches a few important issues such as bullying, plagiarism, online dating, and thinking you are better than the rest of the world.
From the summary, we know that Livvy thinks she is all that, so be prepared to read about her thoughts of grandeur.... until she is kidnapped. I like that Livvy kept true to herself. I mean, she was kidnapped, but she was still full of herself and willing to fight.
Why was she kidnapped? That is the question! And I won't give the answer :-)
Oh! The story also covers some interesting points about the publishing industry (how books are pushed back) which I found interesting (although it was only a sentence about that).
The story is light and Livvy is annoying at times but I enjoyed it anyways.
easy read with non-stop action you need to read this
The Detour started off with a bang! This is a book the author wrote with non-stop action. Imagine being a teenager and writing a book that took off and made you instantly popular and wealthy........but still alone.......no friends, nothing but your parents. Then you are driving to a writing retreat and wreck your car......you wake up to realize quickly your nightmare is only just beginning. If you want a quick, easy read with non-stop action you need to read this. If you have teenagers at home they should read this! Cindy
A teenager who is also a best selling author is invited to a writers conference. On her way to the conference she sees a girl playibg a flute, and ends up wrecking her car and blacks out. When she is awakens, she finds she is a prisoner to a lady and the flute playing daughter that she doesn't know....or so she thinks.
It was very reminiscent to Misery by Stephen king, and it is acknowledged early on. I enjoyed the fact that this spoiled teen who became so because of her troubles, learns an important lesson even though she must endure horror to do so. I recommend this book to up and coming horror readers, and those who enjoy horror. It is a quick read but moves quickly and doesn't drag. I enjoy the way the writer leaves surprises all the way to the last sentence.

    Members Reviews:
    Aren't we all?
Remember how I told you I don't give out five stars very often? 'Nuff said.
First I want to address the really negative review. If you are coming into this book thinking that an eighteen-year-old girl is not going to whine and that all people take all situations with an "equal" degree of seriousness, or that all of us handle grief in the same way, then this book is not for you. For the record, I know adults who whine more.
    Anyway... *SPOILER ALERT!*
I absolutely loved this book. I love the writing style, I love Savannah and how she changes throughout the book. She's living with her difficult mother and a step-father that she doesn't feel particularly close to. She's dealing with depression, a scary and often unavoidable mindset often brought on by the death of a loved one. And it's not that new gorgeous guy didn't help her out of it. Yes, sometimes we are helped along by good-looking guys, but really I think it's her uncle that helps her out the most. Getting into a more "normal" living situation was another factor. Often, a change of scenery and new friends are what he need. A distraction.
I also liked the love story. I liked Dallas, and the fact that he was not "Edward." (Forgive me, I do like Twilight, but come on...) One of my favorite lines when she first meets him is: "Nod. Words. Where are my words?"
We all have a dark side. This book explores them, and not in the sick way that I've come to dread reading. There has to be an appropriate way to deal with these dark issues in books, and I think Loth does extremely well. Do you know someone that was raped in high school? I do. Do you know someone who died in precarious circumstances? I do. Does that mean we don't go on living? Nope. We have to. And this is how we do it, like Savannah did. By accepting a good change and then changing ourselves to be better people.
To support Loth's campaign for suicide awareness, go to http://afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?...
    A cathartic reading experience
Some authors write books that you can't put down, and this was it. I've been looking for a book to fill a John Green-shaped hole, and this was it. Sometimes a book feels like it was written just for you, and this was it.
I connected with Savannah's dad's struggle, and I connected with her struggle with his struggle. The weight of depression, of suicidal thoughts. The way the characters behaved, and the information they withheld, or refused to deal with all felt right. Human. Especially so with individuals struggling with depression.
All books are about the inner workings of their characters, but this book especially.

    Good book.
    Good book.
A Ripping Mystery That Stands the Test of Time
This book was the first in what would eventually become the eleven book "Ellery Queen, Jr." series. Nine of those books, including this one, featured Djuna, the Romany gypsy orphan boy who was adopted by Inspector Queen and played the role of jack-of-all-trades in the Queen household. The Djuna series of juvenile mysteries was originally published between 1942 and 1966. A number of writers produced books for the series under the house name "Ellery Queen, Jr.", and it appears that this particular volume, from 1942, is the first of the six series books written by Samuel (Duff) McCoy, (a novelist, biographer and author who won a Pulitzer in 1922 as an investigative journalist).
I mention all of this for a reason. If you recall having read this, or any, Djuna book as a kid, well, nostalgia is never a bad excuse for rereading something and you don't need any reviews to bring back your memories. But, if you've never read any Ellery Queen, Jr. books, this book is a wonderful representative of 1940's American Boys Own mystery/adventure and an excellent example of the Ellery Queen "fair play" mystery style reimagined at a juvenile adventure level. And, the book is well written. Grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and so on is sharp and top drawer. These books were not carelessly written, and their authors treated even young readers with respect. The books don't aim for great literary heft; there are no hidden deep messages. But they are honest and well-crafted. (For what it's worth this is also one of the few kids books from the 40's that has a "colored man" character who isn't written or described in a way that makes you cringe. Well, not too much.)
NO SPOILERS HERE, but we have a robbery and chases, odd characters, suspicious doings, gangsters, escapes, obvious and not-so-obvious clues, adventure and detection and deduction. And more chases. and some sneaking around. And peril. This is all handled in a very underplayed and matter-of-fact, but still engaging, fashion by our hero Djuna. (Think Sherlock Homes meets Tom Sawyer, with a sparky canine companion.)
Bear in mind that this was written in 1942. It's very Mayberry. Djuna's home, Edenboro, has about ten houses and everyone knows everyone. It's all bicycles and fishing and talking about the case with pals, (candy eating Tommy and sharp as a tack Clarabelle). Lots of "for Pete's sake" and "gee whiz", and it never occurred to the author to slip in any teen drama or angst. But this bucolic setting is deceptive. The book is reasonably fast paced and skulking around cornfields and peering into sheds almost seems exotic now.

A need for teenagers to listen too
Wow! A must for all young people & their parents.
I couldn't stop listening even though it is an emotional roller coaster story. As a parent an eye opener and 'what ifs', also the important topics one should discuss with your kids. A gripping & well written story. definitely worth the download. I shall also get my kids to listen.
    A must listen!
This book captivated me in a matter of minutes, it stole my attention from the very beginning! I bought it for listening to the commute to work, but I went home from work that evening and listening to 17 chapters through. From having personally experienced a loved one being murdered I understand the grief of Taylor in this book and survivor guilt. It's something that the author has captured perfectly, this was comforting to hear.
If you have young girls in your life maybe from 10 upwards I'd recommend making them listen or even read the book. It really highlights the dangers of online chatting with strangers.

    exciting but disappointed
Great writing and a great plot - or so I thought. I'm a huge fan of these authors and I have to say I am very disappointed in the way this book ended. its a fairly classic "who done it" with a seemingly great story line, great character development, and then BOOM. it does a complete 180 in story line for the worst. the reader was wonderful, the writing is easy to follow and keeps you on your toes, but the ending is very unsatisfactory.
    Amazing!
This is the most intense mind blowing, stomach twisting book I have ever read. It is magnificent! This book kept me at the edge of my seat want more! Highly recommend
