Title: To Catch a King: Charles II's Great Escape
    Author: Charles Spencer
    Narrator: Richard Trinder
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-05-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Guided by its various twists and turns, To Catch a King tells the story the manhunt for Charles II following the rebellion that spurred his father's beheading in 1649. This pause-resisting sequel to Killers of the King tells an old story with new eyes, challenging our polarised notions of royalism, nationalism and loyalty.
In January 1649, King Charles I was beheaded in London outside his palace of Whitehall, and Britain became a republic. When his eldest son, Charles, returned in 1651 to fight for his throne, he was crushed by the might of Cromwell's armies at the battle of Worcester.
With 3,000 of his supporters lying dead and 10,000 taken prisoner, it seemed as if his dreams of power had been dashed. Surely it was a foregone conclusion that he would now be caught and follow his father to the block?
At six foot two inches tall, the prince towered over his contemporaries, and with dark skin inherited from his French-Italian mother, he stood out in a crowd. How would he fare on the run with Cromwell's soldiers on his tail and a vast price on his head?
The next six weeks would form the most memorable and dramatic of Charles' life. Pursued relentlessly, Charles ran using disguise and deception and relying on grit, fortitude and good luck. He suffered grievously through weeks when his cause seemed hopeless. He hid in an oak tree - an event so fabled that over 400 English pubs are named Royal Oak in commemoration. Less well-known events include his witnessing a village in wild celebrations at the erroneous news of his killing, the ordeal of a medical student wrongly imprisoned because of his similarity in looks and Charles disguising himself as a servant and as one half of an eloping couple to escape capture.
Charles never forgot those who helped him and, when restored to the throne as Charles II, told the tale of his adventures to Samuel Pepys, who transcribed it all.
In this gripping, action-packed, true adventure story, based on extensive archive material, Charles Spencer, best-selling author of Killers of the King, uses Pepys' account and many others to retell this epic story. With bloodied feet and facing certain death if caught, Charles relied upon a patchwork of hiding places that had evolved to hide Catholics from lethal persecution. Now, in the 1650s, they saved the life of a king.

(L'autrice)

    Language: English

    Publisher: Orion
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
The last Plantagenet king remains one of England's most famous and controversial monarchs.
There are few parallels in English history that can match the drama of Richard III's reign, witnessed in its full bloody intensity. A dedicated brother and loyal stalwart to the Yorkist dynasty for most of his early life, Richard's personality was forged in the tribulation of exile and the brutality of combat.
An ambitious nobleman and successful general with a loyal following, Richard was a man who could claim to have achieved every ambition in life - except one. Within months of his brother Edward IV's early death, Richard stunned the nation when he seized the throne for himself and disinherited his nephews. Having put to death his rivals, Richard's two-year reign would become one of the most tumultuous in English history, ending in treachery and with his death on the battlefield at Bosworth.
Chris Skidmore's biography strips back the legends that surround Richard's life and reign, and by returning to original manuscript evidence, he rediscovers the man as contemporaries saw him. Rather than vindicate or condemn, Skidmore's compelling study presents every facet of Richard's personality as it deserves to be seen: as one of the most important figures in medieval history, whose actions and behaviour underline the true nature of power in an age of great drama, upheaval and instability.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Rome was a poem pressed into service as a city." In that short line, Anatole Broyard, a 20th century American writer, compactly captures the timeless and enchanting beauty that resides within the Eternal City of Rome. This tourist destination is often one of the highest ranked on bucket lists, for how could one not want to experience its marvelous ruins, mirror-like rivers, and spectacular stretches of aqueducts firsthand? As one sips on fine Italian wine on a terrace overlooking the grand remnants of the Colosseum, one can practically hear the roars of the battling gladiators and the raucous applause of the spectators. And as one strolls through the coarse, yet quaint cobblestone streets, one can almost hear the galloping horses and screeching wheels of chariots in the distance, and even feel the brush of the breeze as they charge past. It is difficult not to fall in love with a city so effortlessly nostalgic it verges on utopian.
The ambitious and fearless emperors that built the legendary Roman Empire from scratch, the broad-shouldered and bronzed gladiators with their iconic plume helmets and glinting swords, and elaborate parties attended by toga-wearing Romans fueled by alcohol, violence, orgies, and other godless acts all paint a picture of Roman life. Indeed, many people are well-versed with these unique scenes of Roman history, but few are familiar with the equally riveting years preceding the dawn of the Roman Republic, and even less people are acquainted with the fabled Seven Hills sitting east of the Tiber River - the core geographical components of Rome, and the very foundations that the Eternal City was built on.
The Seven Hills of Rome: The History and Legacy of the Hills That Form the Heart of the Eternal City takes a trek around each and every one of the famous hills, and illustrates how the different events that transpired on each mound have contributed to the shaping of Roman history. You will learn about the Seven Hills of Rome like never before.

This book profiles each hill, important buildings associated with them, and the history that took place on them, from the founding of Rome to more modern history. The breakdown was helpful in avoiding confusion by interspersing stories about each hill together.Â
A mix of information without any order
This is an interesting subject and not well known outside Italy. It is a shame that it is not presented in a chronological order as it should be. Instead it is a jumble of information intermingling different periods of Roman history from its earliest mythical times to the early Christian period.

"To us she appears inconsistent - religious yet aggressive, calculating yet emotional, with the light touch of the courtier, yet the strong grip of the politician - but is this what she was, or merely what we strain to see through the opacity of the evidence? As for her inner life, short of a miraculous cache of new material, we shall never really know. Yet what does come to us across the centuries, is the impression of a person who is strangely appealing to the early 21st century: A woman in her own right - taken on her own terms in a man's world; a woman who mobilized her education, her style, and her presence to outweigh the disadvantages of her sex; of only moderate good looks, but taking a court and a king by storm. Perhaps, in the end, it is Thomas Cromwell's assessment that comes nearest: intelligence, spirit, and courage." - Eric Ives
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' British Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of Great Britain's most important men and women, in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Over 450 years after his reign, Henry VIII is still the most famous and recognizable King of England, but it's for all the wrong reasons. Though well regarded by contemporaries as a learned king, and "one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne", he is best remembered today for his gluttony and multiple marriages, particularly the gruesome way in which he was widowed on more than one occasion. Naturally, that was the focus of the popular Showtime drama series centered around his life, The Tudors.

    Gave me a new perspective
Although I expect to learn a few interesting tidbits that I didn't know when I read these short profiles, I was surprised that I learned a great deal about Anne Boleyn. I am Anglican and had a general knowledge about the role Henry VIII played in separating the English church from the Roman church. However, Anne Boleyn had always been a bit player in what I knew. I found her story very interesting.

    Publisher's Summary:
"We are, by the sufferance of God, King of England, and the Kings of England in times past, never had any superior but God." - King Henry VIII
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, spy networks were a significant factor in England's security, for the first time in the nation's history. Documents from that era reveal hints of the work of England's agents at home and abroad, as well as the activities of foreign agents within the country. This was, of course, not the first time spies had been used. For as long as there have been nations, people have looked for ways to covertly gather information about each other. But in the 16th century, the information gathering and use of covert actions gained a level of organization and importance, that had not previously been seen in Western Europe.
The organization of spy networks and the monarchy's perceived need for them, can be traced back to the manner in which the Tudors came to power, and Henry VIII's reign. Over 450 years after his reign, Henry VIII is still the most famous and recognizable King of England, but it's for all the wrong reasons. Though well regarded by contemporaries as a learned king and "one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne," he is best remembered today for his gluttony and multiple marriages, particularly the gruesome way in which he was widowed, on more than one occasion. Naturally, that was the focus of the popular Showtime drama series centered around his life, The Tudors.
When Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne in 1652, many commentators heralded the beginning of her reign as the second Elizabethan age. The first one, of course, concerned the reign of Henry VIII's second surviving daughter, and middle surviving child, Queen Elizabeth I, one of England's most famous and influential rulers. It was an age when the arts, commerce, and trade flourished. It was the epoch of gallantry, and great, enduring literature. It was also an age of wars and military conflicts in which men were the primary drivers, and women often were pawns.
Elizabeth I changed the rules of the game, and indeed, she herself was changed by the game. She was a female monarch of England, a kingdom that had unceremoniously broken with the Catholic Church, and the Vatican, and the rest of Christendom was baying for her blood. She had had commercial and militaristic enemies galore. In the end, she helped change the entire structure of female leadership.
Spies in Tudor England: The History and Legacy of English Spy Networks During the Tudor Period looks at the complicated process by which the English monarchy developed spy networks.

At the Circus Maximus, the guttural cheers of the spectators reverberated across the enormous open space, but their cries could hardly be heard over the rumble of the ground. On the ellipse-shaped track, 5 charioteers would skew their bodies and steer their magnificent vehicles around the curves. Gusts of sand and dirt flew up from the whizzing wheels and encircled the pounding hooves of the stunning stallions. Distracted personnel and guards dragging their feet, were considered fair game. As one chariot careened to the side, preparing to collide with another chariot, a row of guards might have to try to duck out of the way in the nick of time. Some would be trampled by hooves.
Chariot races were dangerous for participants too. A charioteer could become disoriented and fail to position himself, as his horses moved instinctively, sending his body catapulting forward out of the chariot. Needless to say, chariot racing in Rome was a nail-biting spectacle.
The Circus Maximus: The History and Legacy of the Largest Stadium in Ancient Rome explores the development, as well as the origins and legends surrounding the stadium. It also dissects the historic sport and the Circus stars, as well as the most momentous events ever to have transpired in this fantastic place.
