    Title: Caught in the Revolution

Length: 12 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-01-17
    Publisher: Isis Publishing Ltd
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Helen Rappaport's masterful telling of the outbreak of the Russian Revolution through eyewitness accounts left by foreign nationals who saw the drama unfold. Between the first revolution in February 1917 and Lenin's Bolshevik coup in October, Petrograd was in turmoil - felt nowhere more keenly than on the fashionable Nevsky Prospekt, where the foreign visitors and diplomats who filled hotels, clubs, bars and embassies were acutely aware of the chaos breaking out.
Among this disparate group were journalists, businessmen, volunteer nurses and expatriate socialites. Many kept diaries and wrote letters home. Helen Rappaport draws upon this rich trove of material to carry us right up to the action - to see, feel and hear the revolution as it happened.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting stories - well told
Eye witness accounts by foreigners caught up in the events 100 years ago in, what was then known as, Petrograd.
Mark Meadows can pronounce foreign names reliably and has a good range of accents which bring the stories to life without distracting the listener by being over the top.

All'inizio del '600 metà dell'Italia era dominata dagli spagnoli.

    Publisher's Summary:
The history of Russia is anticipated to be a commonly comprehensible and plainly structured outline of Russia's history since 1283, after the rise of Moscow. Russia was at its best in the 13th century when Moscow became a center for cultural activities. The Russian Tsardom was now a huge empire which spread from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the west to the Pacific Ocean. Succeeding governments of the 19th century retorted to such stresses with an amalgamation of unenthusiastic reform and subjugation. Serfdom in Russia was obliterated in 1861 but its abolition was attained on terms which were not favorable to the rustics and aided in increasing radical pressures. The phase between the serfdom and the beginning of World War I in 1914, State Duma, the Stolypin reforms and the constitution of 1906 endeavored to open and slacken the Russian politics and economy but the tsars were reluctant to renounce autocratic rule or part with their supremacy.
A mix of fiscal breakdown, dissatisfaction with the autocratic government and wearies of the war elicited the 1917 Russian Revolution and first brought an association of moderate socialists and liberals to power, however their unsuccessful policies led to the confiscation of their control by the Communist Bolsheviks in October 25. The crucial history of the Soviet Union is between the 1922 and 1991, effectually Russia was a state based on ideology that indelicately had the same history as it did before the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Socialism was however build differently over various eras in the Russian history, from the varied society and variegated economy and ethos of 1920s to tyranny and authoritative economy of Stalin to the 1980s era of stagnation. From its initial years in March 1918, the government in the Soviet Union was grounded on the one-party rule of the Communists (this is what Bolsheviks called themselves). By the mid-1980s, with the faintness of its fiscal and administrative edifices getting severe, Mikhail Gorbachev made important alterations, which led to the descent of the Soviet Union. Formally the history of Russian Federation begins in January 1992; they were the lawful successors to the Soviet Union on the global stage.
Russia's superpowers have gone astray after confronting stern encounters in its struggles to form a new post-Soviet fiscal and administrative system. Scrapping the socialist crucial preparation and national possession of property of the Soviet era, Russia endeavored to form an economy centered on market entrepreneurship, frequently with difficult consequences. In this century, Vladimir Putin has been its governing leader. Even now Russia shares much continuity of political principles and communal construction with its Soviet and tsarist past.

Title: The Life of Napoleon, Volume 5
    Author: William Hazlitt
    Narrator: Robert Bethune
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-16
    Publisher: Freshwater Seas
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
William Hazlitt is one of the foremost writers of the English language. His fame as a critic, essayist, and social commentator ranks with the likes of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. He considered his justly famous Life of Napoleon his most important work.
In this, the fifth volume of the work, William Hazlitt takes us through Napoleon's fall from power. He shows us the situation in Europe at that time: England controlling the sea, and England, Austria, Russia, and Prussia massed on the borders of France, ready to consummate their 25-year struggle to restore the Bourbon monarchy. Nor were these the only enemies confronting Napoleon. Many of his own countrymen were ready to turn their backs on him now that his aura of invincibility was at an end, destroyed by the disastrous campaign in Russia and further defeats in Europe. Hazlitt brings us to the great climax of the tragedy, the battle of Waterloo, and then follows Napoleon as he casts himself on the mercy of the English and finds himself transported to St. Helena.
Hazlitt was a lifelong admirer of Napoleon and of the French Revolution, but his admiration was not blind. His analysis is both passionate and clear-sighted. At this stage in Napoleon's career, he focuses more on the great events, less on the man and his mind. It is an appropriate focus. At this stage in his life, Napoleon's whole existence was wrapped up in those great events; his personal life was submerged in them.
Hazlitt sometimes transcends and sometimes falls victim to the prevailing attitudes of his day. His thinking sometimes juxtaposes highly progressive ideas with casual bigotry. His text has been left as he wrote it; it is valuable to hear and remember that even great minds have held ideas we prefer to think we have overcome.
The Life of Napoleon was originally published in four volumes from 1828 to 1830, not long before Hazlitt's death. It was later republished in a limited edition of six volumes by the Grolier Society. This audiobook is based on that edition.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
The unruly world of rivalries during the middle ages was their perfect prey. With a fierce ambition to set their sails to distant shores, the Vikings had many truths to their realities. Dying of cowardice or from a shameful end was a fate worse than death. The Frankish world was expanding, and their gains from the losses of the greatest maritime powers was profound but prepared them for offensive battles. Thor and Odin strengthened them inside. But what drove them was the understanding that they would have to rise above their circumstances before they missed a chance to make history and demonstrate their battle fury and power: relentlessly puncturing the fight for control over Europe, wickedly guarding the Byzantine Empire, and prosperously trading furs building forts in "the land of forts". Their brutal raids, pricey Danegeld, and trade routes would enhance their reputations as the bloody Vikings in a medieval formation that stood to rule over men and master over slaves.

    Excerpt
The Vikings distinguished different types of divination by categorizing what type of method was being used in approaching the gods. In a frett, an oracle was consulted about the future and the will of the gods and asked through investigation for a signal or a sign from the gods. In a spyrja spá, the diviner would cast lots to foretell the future by using sacred leaves or blotspann (wood chips). The latter began to be illegal in various places since seeking prophecies (said to gera Finnfarar) from the Finns and sorcery in Finland persisted throughout the Middle Agesâ it was considered exceptional. Yet, the Vikings class of women who practiced spells and prophecy were called volva or seith-koma (spell-women) or spá-kona (prophecy-woman) and practiced soothsaying.

Length: 4 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
Ride with the knights of the crusaders during the Middle Ages as you hear about all the battles of the 11th through the 15th centuries. You'll learn how Western Europe expanded trade and commerce as Genghis Khan opened the Silk Road from Central Asia. Along with the trade of spices and silks, pilgrims also brought the Black Death, a plague that claimed the lives of 20 million. The Crusades depicts an exciting time in history and explains the ongoing division between Islam and Christendom. Examining the Crusaders' history will answer many of questions about grievances between the Muslims, Christians, and Jews that have lasted for thousands of years.
The Crusades brings history alive as it chronicles the participants and their motives behind carrying the cross. Not only will you learn about the influential Christian leaders such as Richard the Lionheart, you'll also discover the strategies of the Muslim sultans, including the most respected in all of Islam, Saladin. You'll hear about the cultures and practices of the people.
The Crusades offers you a bird's eye view of what it must have been like to ship hundreds of thousands of men, thousands of horses, heavy battle equipment, and years of supplies over stormy seas or along the banks of the Nile. However, a better understanding of the crusaders might cause you to question if another crusade is brewing.

    Burt Wolf Reads History
Would you try another book from Michael Klein and/or Richard Core?
If you have ever listened to Burt Wolf on PBS then you get an idea of what you are in for. The book is made quite basic for someone with no knowledge of the crusade but the narrator does not put any emotion in it. The knowledge was ok but was looking for more from narrator. This book does not paint a picture like David McCullough. Might be more for teen ager looking for basic info on the period

  • Queen Victoria: A Life of Contradictions Audiobook by Matthew Dennison

Title: Queen Victoria: A Life of Contradictions
    Author: Matthew Dennison
    Narrator: Clare Corbett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-06-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
A fresh, witty, accessible life of Queen Victoria. Not since Lytton Strachey has the irony, contradictions and influence of this Queen been treated with such flourish or biographical insight.
Reigning over a lifetime, Queen Victoria embodied the spirit of the contradictory era to which she lent her name. She championed modern art and photography but resisted education for the working classes and women's suffrage; she advocated cultural imperialism, tempered by imperial compassion; in her deference to her husband, Prince Albert, and her protracted mourning of his death, she combined wifely submission with regal obstinacy.
Original and accessible, Queen Victoria is a compelling assessment of the ruler's mercurial character, her key relationships and her impact on her own age and beyond.
    Critic Reviews:
"Matthew Dennison's short, elegant biography of Queen Victoria focuses on the woman herself, rather than her effect on the country or her monarchical legacy.... The book offers a nuanced portrait of Victoria, who could be impetuous and hypocritical, but also surprisingly progressive in her social views. Dennison writes with flair, and his vivid pen portraits of the peripheral figures in Victoria's story are worth the price alone." (David Evans, Independent on Sunday)
"Sometimes caustic about her stubbornness and passions, often admiring of her frankness and honesty, Dennison's Queen Victoria sweeps us through the monarch's long and colourful life at a collected canter. He draws on imagery of her reign, including portraits of her with John Brown, to startlingly good effect, making us see with new eyes the lone young queen, later the Widow of Windsor and, in a final role, Grandmama of Europe." (Flora Fraser)
"Matthew Dennison has pulled off a tremendous coup in writing a short and concise book, encapsulating Victoria's life in 152 small pages. Short books can sometimes be superficial overviews, but this one has the confidence of considerable research, well digested and well delivered.... For anyone approaching Queen Victoria for the first time, this is perfect." (Hugo Vickers, Times)
"This illuminating book gives us Victoria in deliberately bite-sized chunks.... Dennison's dry wit and concise analysis bring new life to a monarch we all thought we knew." (Daily Express)
"In elegant, eloquent prose, Matthew Dennison has written a close-focus and perceptive account of a complex woman." (Country Life)
"One is left breathless with admiration for the great Queen." (The Tablet)
"[Matthew Dennison] has done an adroit and incisive job of tying together Victoria's many loose ends." (Spectator)
    Members Reviews:
Perhaps a better subtitle would be "Matthew Dennison and his voluminous vocabulary."
Not every writer could manage to squeeze "spangled purlieus," "ramshackle bravado," "barrack-room bawdy," "lusty xenophobia" and "splenetic irreverence" into one gibbous paragraph. If you like big, fancy words, this book is for you. And actually even if you don't, the scholarship seems sound based on my somewhat limited knowledge of Victoria and her time.
However, as other reviewers of other versions of this title have noted, a great deal of interesting information and background detail has been omitted.
