    Publisher's Summary:
Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Long Road from Jarrow by Stuart Maconie.
In the autumn of 1936, some 200 men from the Tyneside town of Jarrow marched 300 miles to London in protest against the destruction of their towns and industries. Precisely 80 years on, Stuart Maconie walks from north to south, retracing the route of the emblematic Jarrow Crusade. Following history's footsteps, Maconie is in search of what modern Britain is really like today.
Travelling down the country's spine, Maconie moves through a land that is, in some ways, very much the same as the England of the '30s, with its political turbulence, austerity, north/south divide, food banks and, of course, football mania. Yet in other ways, it is completely unrecognisable: highstreets peppered with pound shops and e-cigarette vendors, smoothie bars and Costas on every corner.
Maconie visits the great, established and yet evolving cities of Leeds, Sheffield and London as well as the sleepy hamlets, quiet lanes and roaring motorways. He meets those with stories to tell and whose voices build a funny, complex and entertaining tale of Britain, then and now. Written in Maconie's signature style, this is a fascinating exploration of a modern nation that, though it looks and sounds strangely familiar, has been completely transformed.

Fabulous, edgy recreation of the Jarrow March
Initially, this must have been a simple idea - recreate the Jarrow March 80 years - to the day - after it took place in October 1936, and compare how the walkers fared to what he discovers on his own journey. Typical Maconie, you might think. However, Brexit and Trump hang so heavily over this excellent, thoughtful book, that it becomes - as well as an excellent potted account of the 1936 walk - an analysis of where England finds itself in 2016-17. As you might expect, he is no fan of Trump, May or indeed Brexit itself, nor is he a fan of Corbyn - accusing him, with some justification, of ignoring Labour's traditional working class voters, so typified by the Marchers themselves. Along the way he eulogizes about Leeds has little good to say about Market Harborough, but is charmed by the drinkers in an Italian bar in Bedford, and has other memorable encounters with multi-cultural England, most of them positive.
As you might expect, this is an entertaining book, beautifully read by the author (although be warned that there is some rather jarring editing that almost made me take a star off the performance - but I though to do so would be churlish and insulting to the author). I suspect the strong political slant may grate with one or two listeners, yet as always his points are well made and winningly argued.
Overall,Long Road From Jarrow is funny, educational and actually rather moving. Highly recommended.
PS. Any book that slips in a mention of Yes guitarist Steve Howe is fine by me.
    Charming and Evocative
There were times early on in the book where I lost sight of whether this was a then and now tale of English life with the Jarrow Crusade at the epicentre, interjected with feelings of Brexit. or a Brexit tale, interjected with feelings of the Jarrow Crusade. But looking past all that, Stuart meets some fascinating people, and recounts the story of a historic march.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1503, Pope Julius II had succeeded the notorious Alexander VI, and Julius II brought an appreciation for the arts to the papacy. After Michelangelo finished the flurry of works that he had worked on during the previous four years, he was commissioned by Pope Julius II to complete a tomb in the Pope's honor. The project was to be massive in scope, and the tomb was to be placed inside of St. Peter's Basilica, the construction of which was intended to take place while Michelangelo designed the tomb.
Michelangelo approached the project with great ambition, delegating a full six months alone to selecting the marble to be used for the tomb. For this task, he traveled to Carrara, a city in the Tuscany region that had been the source for the marble used in many of his earlier works. Michelangelo devoted himself exclusively to the project until 1506, at which point he returned to Rome due to a lack of available money. Consequently, he relocated back to Florence despite having no projects commissioned there, but the temperamental Pope Julius then ordered him back to Rome, threatening to wage war on Florence if he failed to return. With no alternative, Michelangelo returned to Rome later in 1506, but the project was doomed to fail with Pope Julius in command. Julius was suspicious and eventually became consumed with the belief that it was bad luck to have one's tomb built during his lifetime. As a result, the project was aborted altogether in 1508.

Intriguing how flawed popes, artists, kings, cardinals, and others influenced the Vatican
This book is not just about the Sistine Chapel and other monumental works in the Vatican, but also the popes, cardinals and other Catholic leaders involved in building and expanding the Church's grandeur. There were a few saintly leaders, but it seemed there were many more sinners! That made for an interesting and more real telling of history involving the Middle Ages of the Roman Catholic Church.
If you would be bothered to learn that the Papacy wasn't always "holy," this book might be upsetting for you. But on the other hand, it is amazing to see how the Church survived, and even prospered, under such flawed people! Because of the humanness of this historical setting, the story of the Sistine Chapel as told in this book is most interesting and even inspiring for some.

    Not enough but good enough!
This would be a good book to read for those about to visit it
This is a really detailed book about when, why, and how the Sistine Chapel was built, and it meticulously describes Michelangelo's work on the ceiling. This would be a good book to read for those about to visit it, or for anyone interested in the history of the Catholic Church or Renaissance.

"Oh dear," said Evelyn Waugh of his society friends, "these great ladies." In this book of pen portraits the listener is introduced to obscure ladies who were society stars in their day. From the Churchills to the Mitfords, British and European Royals, to international playboys and film stars, these ladies knew everyone. And everyone knew them, for better or worse. Margaret, Duchess of Argyll: Famous for her naughty polaroids, and whose divorce from her Duke saw 88 men named as her lovers. Mariga Guinness: A bewitching German princess with a harrowing childhood, who fought to preserve Irish buildings and became an icon in the process. Sylvia Ashley: A girl from the wrong side of the tracks who married two lords, two Hollywood stars, and a Russian prince. Joan Wyndham: A bohemian aristocrat who shunned a debutante existence to live a life of debauchery in Chelsea. Enid Lindeman: An Australian wine heiress who married four rich and titled men, and buried them all. Venetia Montagu: A society girl who moved at the centre of HH Asquith's wartime government. Irene Curzon: A "poor little rich girl" who dared to break the rules. Jean Massereene: A dazzling viscountess whose association with Sir Edward Carson almost ruined her reputation. A true eccentric, fashion icon, and champion of the spiritualist movement.

A Good Book About Fascinating Women
These Great Ladies: Peeresses and Pariahs is a collection of pen portraits of various women from British, 20th Century history. Some, such as Margaret, Duchess of Argyll and author Joan Wyndham, are still somewhat famous to this day. Others, such as Jean, Viscountess Massereene, have somewhat faded into obscurity. Miss Spence writes of these women with a light tone, while at the same time recognising the seriousness of much of the subject matter (such as when dealing with the politics of the eras). What is more, she treats each of these women sympathetically, recognising that they were human beings who were both products of their times and their circumstances. I highly recommended for anyone who is interested in British, 20th Century history, the British aristocracy, or who simply enjoys reading about the lives of fascinating women.

    Publisher's Summary:
May 30, 1431: Joan of Arc will soon be burned at the stake. This is the story of the final 72 hours of Joan of Arc. The story is told in a compelling countdown up until Joan of Arc's head slumps forward and her innocent life is extinguished by the smoke that quickly fills her lungs as onlookers cheer.
The girl who led the English against the French in the One Hundred Years War, who hears voices of the saints and God himself, discovers she will burn at the stake, not for leading the French Armies against her English captors, not for heresy against the church, but for cross-dressing.
Despised by Bishop Cauchon, he lays out a legal case against Joan which is full of lies but no one goes against him. Most look forward to watching whom they believe is the devil woman burn at the stake. A guard she has befriended lays out an escape plan to free her but fate intervenes.
As the hours count down to Joan's final hours, she reminisces about her visions, those hard yet wonderful things that guided her life, and she wonders if they were all worth it as she is led to the courtyard and her final minutes of her life.
What were Joan's thoughts during her last 72 hours? What was behind Bishop Cauchon's motives to burn Joan? What were the thoughts of the guard and soldier that she had befriended during her last hours? How would her parents get past losing their daughter in a most horrific way? As the clock winds down, Joan must try to escape, or accept the fact that the voices knew what her fate was to be since the day she was born.

The empire thrived and attained a population of one million becoming the first to have reached such extraordinary number, in the history.
Grandiose and splendor of the Romans started to fall in time and by the 6th century the population fell to as less as 30,000 which further fell to 20,000 when it was influenced by Papal Schism and Avignon Papacy. Rome was almost lost in the medieval times but 15th and 16th centuries saw it gain its lost finery once again.

    Language: English

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Economists have called the South Sea bubble "one of the most famous and dramatic episodes in the history of speculation". The company's spectacular fall impacted not only its investors, but public confidence in corporations, investments, and even banking worldwide.
How did the directors of one of the most successful joint-stock companies at the time, sought after in social circles as financiers and masterminds, come to be called before Parliament to testify? The anger over the dishonesty of the directors of the company resulted in one member of the House of Lords suggesting that the South Sea Company directors "be sewn up in sacks, along with snakes and monies, and then drowned."
Though the history of the South Sea Company is obscure and unfamiliar to most, the regular references to the company and the scandal that surrounded it have lead it to be regularly referenced by economists, historians, and even investors today. It is a story centered around England's history of debt, loans, and banking, all against the backdrop of modern history's most famous empire.
The South Sea Company: The History of the British Empire's South American Stock Company examines the history and legacy of one of England's most notorious trading companies. You will learn about the South Sea Company like never before, in no time at all.

The Legends of Valladolid tells the story of the early colonial cities of New Spain, and that of its people. The legends, as every legend about the origins of early human societies, helps us understand and value the past, and gives it a face, flavor, smells, landscape, feelings, and love. This enjoyable version of the Legends of Valladolid, about early Morelia, recounts stories of monks, of the dead who have been revived, of treasures discovered, and beautiful young women who have died and whose ghosts wander the earth because of the rigors of love and the morals of the time. This audiobook invites you to levitate while wearing long, black robes, crinoline and nun's or monk's habits, while you travel to the past through the legends our grandmothers told us.

    Riepilogo Editore:

This is a book that will leave you with intense cases of wanderlust
I really enjoyed this modern day retelling of folklore from North-Eastern Wales by Graham Watkins.
These stories are written in a way that makes them easy to understand and are just the right length to keep you turning the pages. I liked that the author chose to add other facts to some of them like artwork created in honor of spirits or recent experiences in these areas. I was particularly fascinated by the story of the Lonely Lighthouse Keeper and the length of time this legend has gone on for. I love all things ghostly, and this gave me goosebumps while reading it!
Another great one was the story of Malid Malwod. I felt dreadfully sorry for the poor woman in this tale, and I had to pause between reading to stop and google this place for myself. It was interesting to put images to some of the places described, and though Iâve not been to Wales I definitely want to go now.
This is a book that will leave you with intense cases of wanderlust and the need to see and experience these things and places for yourself. If you like legends and myths, youâll definitely want to give this one a read.
    Surprised in a Good way
Have to admit, I was nicely surprised by this collection of legends from Wales. Seriously, this is a case of a kindle freebie convincing a reader to buy other books by the author. The writing is relatively good and the retellings are engaging. The use of modern language makes the book ideal for most age groups. There is a nice selection of stories, most connected with places.
