    Character Driven Story.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to a friend because it is well written.
What other book might you compare Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Regret to and why?
I would liken this to the following audiobook, My Dear Watson. In most of the Sherlock Holmes stories, the mystery is center stage. In these 2 books, the character studies are center stage. The mystery is a byproduct of the characters, their lives, and their struggles. For an Arthur Conan Doyle fan, who have read, and watched everything Sherlock like; well-written and different is refreshing.
What does David Collins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He tells the story so well, you dont notice him, you become engrossed in the tale. I think it is the task of the narrator to disappear into the floor. If the character transitions are not well done, or the narrator struggles over his lines, it is impossible to enjoy the story, no matter how well written.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several touching moments, as well as several moments where I bit my nails, or sat on the edge of my seat. I, however, will not share these. I do not want to spoil the story, for those who have not read the story yet.
    Any additional comments?
Completely enjoy , and looking forward to part 2.
    Gripping read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Would certainly recommend to any Holmes fan. Great story which remains faithful to the original Conan Doyle works. Compelling spin on the period after The Final Problem . Above all though it is the quality of the narration which makes it such a pleasure. David Collins has such a wonderfuly animated voice. Only draw back is that the book finishes halfway through the story; that was a real blow. Can't wait for the release of the next book.

    Critic Reviews:
"Unlike so much current pseudo-steampunk this isn't just fantasy with cogs stuck on. A really good read." (SFX)
"Rockets through a Britain-that-wasn't with magic and industrial mayhem with a firm nod to Holmes." (Patricia Briggs)
    Members Reviews:
    Story telling style over plot.
Introspection seems to have taken over plot development; exposition, particularly to set character, in The Iron Wyrm Affair. The more I heard of the internal thoughts, the harder I found it to believe in the characters hard boiled sorceress and unparalleled logic machine Bannon always self-doubting, and worrying about it; genius detective (supposed to be good at putting data into context, continually taken by surprise by the most obvious developments) Archibald Clare always talking to himself about how he shouldnt be thinking about
The first book was full of steampunk description, fantastical mech monsters, intriguing; this is all about confused, out of character - as they are represented from narration, stream of consciousness self-characterization.
All this affects Jane Collingwoods effort. Stream of consciousness requires different voice; there is so much of it here it is difficult to endure.
The development of plot was more interesting in the first book. Here is just seems to drag itself into the narrative fighting against the flow.

One of Christies best novels in clear Italian.
I dont much like the background music which seems to accompany Audiobooks in Italian Ive heard, but the narrators speak clearly (manic laughter apart!) which is important if youre listening to a book in a third language.
The familiar format and context are useful for a language learner, and the novel is amongst Christies best - she did write some dreadful potboilers!
Unfortunately the Italian versions seem to have retained some attitudes we now find offensive, redacted from Anglophone editions, which shock more than the murders!
I dont know if the well-to-do or aristocracy of old England were as obnoxious as she portrays them, and since their world, if it ever existed as she writes it, has long gone with the wind, I prefer to take them as interesting aliens.

    Publisher's Summary:

From the moment the boat sets sail it becomes clear that many of his fellow passengers - from a neurotic widow to the ship's lecturer - have guilty secrets to hide. But do any of them also have a motive for murder? It will take all of Nigel's insight and flair if he is to uncover the truth.
Nicholas Blake was the pseudonym of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, who was born in County Laois, Ireland in 1904. After his mother died in 1906, he was brought up in London by his father, spending summer holidays with relatives in Wexford. He was educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1927. Blake initially worked as a teacher to supplement his income from his poetry writing and he published his first Nigel Strangeways novel, A Question of Proof, in 1935.
Blake went on to write a further nineteen crime novels, all but four of which featured Nigel Strangeways, as well as numerous poetry collections and translations. During the Second World War he worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information, which he used as the basis for the Ministry of Morale in Minute for Murder, and after the war he joined the publishers Chatto & Windus as an editor and director. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968 and died in 1972 at the home of his friend, the writer Kingsley Amis.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Nicholas Blake books are something quite by themselves in English detective fiction." (Elizabeth Bowen)
"His plots are ingenious" (Times Literary Supplement)
"A master of detective fiction" (Daily Telegraph)

    Another Dreadful Narrator
Don't publishing companies audition their narrators any more? More than half the books I buy have terrible narrators that ruin them. I couldn't get past the first ten minutes with this one, the narrator had a horrible jerky stop/start way of reading, emphasising completely random words in each sentence. I have no idea if this was a good story - I couldn't listen to it, and won't be listening to any of the other ones.

    Release date: 04-01-13

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
At the Universal Advertising Agency in London a murder is being planned.
Three men have been discovered taking bribes and face the grim prospect of the dole queue, unless they can get rid of the person who caught them. Their ringleader, thick-set and vicious Mr. Morris, soon discovers that killing is far easier than he thought - and that he even has a talent for it. He might, he feels, be superhuman. But as he will discover, there is no such thing as the perfect crime, and no deed goes unpunished.
Taking us into a 1920s London of grimy back streets, smoky cafés and shabby rooms, Plain Murder, C. S. Forester's second crime novel, is a brilliantly atmospheric and gripping portrayal of the dark heart of a killer.

    Chilling Suspense
I have read Forester's Hornblower series and African Queen. Forester is such a good writer I decided to try out one of his other books. This book was published in 1930. Forester creates an atmosphere of chilling suspense in a story that has one avidly wanting to know what happens next. It is different from our modern stories where we are trying to discover who did it or why they did it. In this story we know who did it and why, we are waiting for them to get caught. The story takes place in 1920's London. Morris works for an advertising agency and is caught with two other men by their boss for taking bribes. Morris makes Harrison (his boss) have an accident. As the story unfolds we see the moral decline of Morris as he finds murder a way of solving his problems with people. I will not spoil the story for you needless to say the story takes twists and turn as we chew our nails. It is important to remember this book is written in 1930 and must be enjoyed and judged on that basis. Ric Jerrom does a good job reading the book.

    Awful performance
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Couldn't get past the screeching and whispering. I have no idea what it is about.
Has Tomorrow's Ghost turned you off from other books in this genre?
Don't really know what the genre is.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Impossible to listen to in the car. Perhaps a high end stereo would soften the screeches.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Tomorrow's Ghost?
Didn't understand it or finish it. Total waste of money.

Steven Mackintosh stars as Martin Beck, with Neil Pearson as Lennart Kollberg, in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of The Fire Engine that Disappeared.
The Martin Beck books are widely acknowledged as some of the most influential detective novels ever written. Written by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, the series set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandanavian crime fiction. Before Kurt Wallander or Harry Hole, Beck was the original flawed policeman, working alongside his colleagues to uncover the cruelty and injustice lurking beneath the surface of Sweden's seemingly liberal, democratic society.
In The Fire Engine that Disappeared, adapted from the fifth book, the apartment of a suspect being staked out by Beck's team explodes, killing three people. Arson and murder isn't at first suspected, but it soon becomes clear that the fire was started on purpose....
