    The ending was confusing
What did you like best about Ransom, P.I.? What did you like least?
I liked the story. It kept me listening.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I wouldn't say edge of seat, but interesting.
Do you think Ransom, P.I. needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes. Actually, I presumed there would be one. But even so, the ending was poor. It needed another chapter of the story. It left you confused rather then, can't wait for next one.
    Any additional comments?
    I would read book 2.

    No Introduction
I'm a fan of Secret Agent X: while X had all the usual gimmicks it series had a distinctive feel and will please anybody with a taste for hero pulps.
There is no introduction. That wont matter to most people. But I had already read the story and bought it for the introduction.

    Format: Unabridged
Durée: 19 hrs and 39 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 07-04-14
    Éditeur: Audiolib
    Evaluation: 3.5 sur 5 sur 3 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective

    Title: The Chameleon
Subtitle: The Cyrus Skeen Detective Series
    Author: Edward Cline
    Narrator: Gregg A. Rizzo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-27-14
    Publisher: Edward Cline
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
It is November, 1929. The stock market has crashed. The Roaring Twenties are about to end. But Cyrus Skeen, private detective, is not too concerned. He never bought on margin or gambled on "sure things" to make a quick buck; his wealth is secure. But many businessmen and investors made that mistake and have been bankrupted. Ruined, some have committed suicide. But not all have jumped from their office windows to end it all. Lucian Maxey, president of Maxey Motors in San Francisco, seems to have committed suicide by putting a gun to his head. The medical examiner and police have written off the death as a suicide. Eugene Maxey, his son, a professor at Stanford University, hires Skeen to prove that his father was murdered. But then Skeen discovers that the man who hired him is not the real Eugene Maxey, but an imposter. Skeen is drawn into a bizarre conspiracy that leads to a twisting trail of lies, half-truths, England, and an organization with ties to the burgeoning Nazi Party in Germany.

Another absorbing and exciting Skeen read!
One would think by now that every miscreant in San Francisco would know enough not to try to put one over on Cyrus Skeen, the city's most celebrated private investigator. Skeen does not take kindly to being hoaxed, made "a pawn in someone else's game", or shot at, and when what at first appears to be a family feud grows increasingly convoluted and lethal he is determined to discover what this masquerade conceals.
The Roaring Twenties are over, it is 1930 and the stock market has just crashed. Preoccupied with looming financial calamity, most people remain oblivious to the ominous political movements enveloping the world. In the course of his investigation, Skeen will uncover the horror of cold-blooded murder committed in the name of "national salvation".
Evocative, thought-provoking, and witty, "The Chameleon" is another rewarding entry in the Cyrus Skeen series.
    As EXPECTED, EXCELLENCE
Mr. Cline's writing has never failed to captivate me. The Cyrus Skeen stories provide mystery, drama, and humor in tightly written prose. The Chameleon leads the reader through not only a murder mystery but a Nazi conspiracy. Bravo!!
Cyrus Skeen out-sleuthing and out-thinking his adversaries.
Three and a half stars. We get back to the Cyrus Skeen from the earlier books, out-sleuthing and out-thinking his adversaries. There is the added element in the background of the Crash of '29 and its effect on the country. This adds an interesting character that is a bit more 'noir' than in the earlier books. I am happy the series reverted to its original form and look forward to reading more.
    Cyrus Skeen is back!
Thank you, Mr. Cline, for another cracking good story in the fascinating Cyrus Skeen series. Your historical research of the time and locale is impeccable, and I very much enjoy taking my own armchair detours to find the places mentioned.
Cyrus Skeen is a hero for the thinking individual, and his lovely and artistic wife Dilys is a delightful companion. Please keep her safe Mr. Cline. The real world is tragic enough without having to worry unduly about our fictional heroines.
I am, once again, most eagerly awaiting Mr. Skeen's next appearance.
    Fun Reading
I'm in the middle of reading this and can't wait to see how it turns out.

    Title: The Black Eyed Blonde
    Author: Benjamin Black
    Narrator: Dennis Boutsikaris
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-27-14
    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In this gripping and deeply evocative crime novel, Benjamin Black returns us to the dark, mesmerising world of Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye and his singular detective Philip Marlowe; one of the most iconic and enduringly popular detectives in crime fiction.
Maybe it was time I forgot about Nico Peterson, and his sister, and the Cahuilla Club, and Clare Cavendish. Clare? The rest would be easy to put out of my mind, but not the black-eyed blonde....
It is the early 1950s. In Los Angeles, Private Detective Philip Marlowe is as restless and lonely as ever, and business is a little slow. Then a new client arrives: young, beautiful, and expensively dressed, Clare Cavendish wants Marlowe to find her former lover, a man named Nico Peterson. Soon Marlowe will find himself not only under the spell of the Black-Eyed Blonde; but tangling with one of Bay City's richest families - and developing a singular appreciation for how far they will go to protect their fortune....
    Critic Reviews:
"When I heard that Benjamin Black, aka the Man Booker-winner John Banville, had taken on the job, I felt the Chandler estate had plumped for the right man. Like Chandler, Banville sweats over his sentences. And although the avowed model for Banville/Blacks crime fiction is Simenon, there is a great deal of Marlowe in his lonely, quixotic protagonist Quirke ... The plot is dead right ... The voice is spot on too" (Daily Telegraph)
If anything, oddly, the book is probably better than an actual Chandler: more coherent, and more consistent, more careful. Banville is simply a more elegant writer. Chandler was a metaphorical rogue trader; Banville is a class act... This is perfect Mr Banville (New Statesman)
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful
Very evocative , of a time ,place and style. Perfect escape from today . Wonderful that Raymond Chandlers characters have more stories to inhabit .
Love the voice on this reading
Where does The Black Eyed Blonde rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's a great bedtime listen but the story, while well told, will appeal only to those who are raymond carver fans since banville (the pen behind benjamin black) is really entering into the mindset of the timeso dont expect a Benjamin Black novel!
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
It's the voice which I love and the fun one liners which capture the genre
    Vintage Marlowe
Would you listen to The Black Eyed Blonde again? Why?
Yes, There were so many really good lines in the story, the author has produced this book with the dedication of a master craftsman.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The world weary private detective Marlowe who just doesn't seen to fit into the life he lives, yet can't (or won't because he's a stubborn cuss) change the path he's be set on.
What about Dennis Boutsikariss performance did you like?
Absolutely nailed the character to a 'T' I really hope he continues with this.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It surprised me how the author kept a lid on the plot until the final few pages. Bravo I didn't guess who did it!
    Any additional comments?
Let me know when the next book is out.
    Fun
Well-crafted homage to Chandler. Not as good as Chandler's best, but better than his worst. Nice characters and scenario.

Bored and broke, Marlow quits retirement to search for a mole within MI6.
Its springtime in Scotland, and an aging spy is tending to his bees. Smoke rises from his bellows as he looks in on the colony for the first time since winter. When his wife goes to check on him, the bellows are still smoking but her husband has disappeared. He may be dead, he may be kidnapped - or he may have gone over to the other side.
To locate the missing beekeeper, the secret service turns to Peter Marlow, a veteran agent who is finding retirement no substitute for life in the field. He soon discovers a byzantine Russian conspiracy, of which the vanished spy is either the architect or the victim, operating deep within British intelligence. In the shadows of this secretive government agency, there are more pressing dangers than the sting of a frightened honeybee.
The Oxford Gambit is the third book in the Peter Marlow Mystery series, which also includes The Sixth Directorate and The Valley of the Fox.
    Members Reviews:
    Plodding
I've read the first three books of this series and each one gets more bogged down in Marlow's love interests. Hone's story premises begin with great promise often in the best Le carre tradition, but the plot always seems to grind to a halt when Marlow gets interested in some girl. Horn goes through the same formula, "Is she in love with him? Is she working for the other side?" Yet we just don't care.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a strange coded message arrives at 221B Baker Street, sent by a member of Professor Moriarty's criminal organization, Sherlock Holmes soon deciphers it and finds a warning: someone is about to be murdered.
A visit from a Scotland Yard inspector confirms that one John Douglas has been mysteriously killed in Sussex. Even Sherlock Holmes, well accustomed to the bizarre, finds the elements of this case unusual. John Douglas lived at Birlstone Manor House, built on the ruins of a castle surrounded by a moat. Every night he drew up the bridge as a precaution against potential villains.
Nevertheless, Douglas was found dead, shot in the face at close range with a sawed-off shotgun. And the bereaved are strangely dry-eyed.
The mystery spans the Atlantic, from Sussex and the foggy streets of London to a coal-mining region in Pennsylvania, and the ultimate twist can only be untangled by the incomparable skill of the legendary Holmes.
    Members Reviews:
    Great Sherlock Holmes story
Absolutely perhaps the most entertaining Sherlock Holmes novel in my opinion. Faster paced than The Hound of the Baskervilles, more character depth than A Study in Scarlet, and as much a page-turner as The Sign of Four. For the Holmes purist, I think there is less deductive reasoning than some of the other stories, however the story itself appears more cohesive in some ways. I know I often put aside The Hound because it got a bit ponderous at times but TVoF kept my attention.
    Captivating read!
Suspense!! Sherlock Holmes at its best. I love all Sherlock Holmes stories. The Valley of Fear is somewhat unique because it steps back and tells a whole story within a story. It is so captivating the reader is sure to have a hard time getting up in the morning for lack of sleep...
    Give Fear a Chance
This is the least popular of ACD's four Sherlock Holmes novels, which I've never been able to understand: as somebody who's read and watched far too many mysteries and can usually predict the solutions to them fairly early in the running, I always remember getting surprised â twice! â in the course of "The Valley of Fear." Sir Arthur, as we all know, could get a bit wobbly on the details (Sherlock would've worn out his eyes rolling them at his biographer:-), but it takes extraordinary narrative coordination and finesse to pull off surprises in a novel without them seeming gimmicky; and they don't here. Give this volume a chance and it'll win you over â though in fairness, you should realize that â like "A Study in Scarlet," and even "The Hound of the Baskervilles" to an extent â Doyle sidelines Sherlock in favor of the deeper backstory behind the crime the Great Detective is investigating here. If you want 'all Sherlock, all the time,' really none of the novels will feed your need like the short stories do:-) But if you love good mysteries, "The Valley of Fear" definitely qualifies.
Holmes and Watson are called in
Mrs Holmes and Watson are passed a message from a spy in Prof. Moriarty's nest. Sherlock explains who the professor is, touching on Moriarty's publication 'The Dynamics of an Asteroid' (which is mentioned in another story worth reading as well, 'The Ultimate Crime',' I think Mr.
