The Roman Empire is in terminal decline, and Prydain has become a land filled with conflict and danger. However there is hope. In the West, the ancient Celtic culture is still strong and vibrant. When Arthnog was a child, his villa was attacked and his family lost. Taken into the protection of the Celts, he grows up secretly blaming himself for the misfortunes that befell his people. Once a young man, he feels compelled to travel the lands in search of meaning. He encounters Dunstane, a Pictish warrior, haunted by demons of her own. Later, a Saxon warrior called Leofric joins them; he, too, has a dark and mysterious past.
During his travels Arthnog unearths a conspiracy to subjugate the Western Celts of Prydain. Can the three warriors truly obtain redemption and help save a people?

An Engaging, Authentic Tale
I picked up this book on the recommendation of a fellow martial-artist friend. I don't often read fiction, but I enjoyed it. The well-researched historical and martial context provided a solid foundation to support an engaging, moving tale. In that way it reminded me of Clan of the Cave Bear - a fictional story in a real setting, not fantasy.
Incidentally, like in that series, one of the central characters is a woman - intelligent, skilled, and courageous. If you're exasperated with shallow, decorative female characters, fear not; I think you will like her.
One thing that struck me about the writing was that it is done with an appropriately light, balanced touch. Part adventure, part love story, and part war story. Myth and magic, cultural and natural history, warrior ethos and martial strategy. Some humor and some heartbreak. The author explores human and animal nature, passion and lust, loyalty and commitment. Nothing is heavy-handed or overdone. The story flows along nicely without feeling hurried.
The well-developed relationships between and among both the individual characters and clans provide a strong sense of humanity and draw you into the story. These are the kinds of people and cultures you come to care about.
I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
Note that the one-star review on this book appears to have nothing to do with this book, story, or author. That "review" is just someone's ill-tempered rant (in her only review ever) about how she thought Faulkner should not have used the Welsh word for Britain, Prydain, in his story. Bizarre. I would discount it entirely.
Three Stars
Interesting but not very accurate historically, still it is fiction about Arthur.
Rule One of fantasy: Do Not Step on the Inklings. Lloyd Alexander, author of The Chronicles of Prydain, is one of them.
This book may be awesome??? The Chronicles of "Prydain" were written by Lloyd Alexander. Find a better title instead of stepping on the title of an Inkling! If you don't know what an Inkling is, then you shouldn't be reading, or writing fantasy books. Google it.
