More enjoyable than the fist book
I was able to get into this book slightly more than the first book in this series, I think because I was finally used to the narrator of the Audible audio version, and I kind of knew what to expect of the story and the main character. I did feel like there was a lot of repetition of the first book in the beginning as the character sums up what happened in the previous book. That being said, the characters were interesting, the situations were interesting, the narration was "unique." Even though I'll admit this series is not my normal cup of tea, I still want to know what will happen in the next book.

    Publisher's Summary:
At the Earth's Core by Edgar Rice Burroughs is a fantasy novel, the first in his series about the fictional "hollow earth" land of Pellucidar.
    Members Reviews:
    A pleasant surprise
I've read a good bit of Burroughs, but up to this time only from Tarzan or the Barsoom series. I'd probably been influenced by the terrible movie to skip the Pellucidar series, and as it turns out I was depriving myself by doing so. I had come to "Tarzan at the Earth's Core" in the Tarzan series, and found that it came as the fourth book of the Pellucidar series as well as the thirteenth book of the Tarzan series. So I decided to put my head down and slog through Pellucidar until I was caught up to Tarzan.
I'm really glad that happened. As much as I enjoy Tarzan, Korak, John Carter, and Carthoris, I may like At the Earth's Core just a bit better. It has all of Burrough's excellent world-building, engaging zig-zag plotting, deadly creatures, and tenacious heroes. The difference here is that our hero David is not the same type of superman as either Tarzan or John Carter. While athletic, he uses his wits more than his strength, which makes his story quite interesting.
Looking at Burrough's bibliography, the poor readers of the day had to wait NINE YEARS for the resolution to the cliff hanger at the end of "At the Earth's Core". OUCH! During that time Burroughs published about twelve novels ... three Barsoom, six Tarzan, and the "Land that Time Forgot" series.
I'm mighty glad I don't have to wait those nine years ... I'm on to "Pellucidar" right now.
    Highly recommended
    A great distraction
While this short work contains many similar themes to Burroughs' own 'Barsoom' series, that should not discourage anyone from checking out the 'Pellucidar' world. On the whole, it is a fun mash-up of "Journey to the Center of the Earth", with that book's scientific take on man vs. nature, and the pulp action, romance and travelogue elements of "A Princess of Mars".
As always, Burroughs does not disappoint in the pacing department, wringing a good deal of action and adventure into a mere 90 pages. Some of that is due to somewhat plainer prose than one might expect from ERB. That's not to say the story is a chore to read. On the contrary, there are a few passages memorable for the poignancy of their observation. One such follows: "...time ceases to be a factor the moment means for measuring it cease to exist."
Another, for the sake of illustration: "Crouching beside the brook, I waited until one of the diminutive purple whales rose to nibble at the long grasses which overhung the water, and then, like the beast of prey that man really is, I sprang upon my victim, appeasing my hunger while he yet wriggled to escape."
Of course, what Burroughs tale would be complete without some whimsical, borderline sardonic commentary or inner dialogue? A sample of such from this work: "I am frank to admit that for myself I was much more concerned with our own immediate future than with any problematic loss which the world might be about to suffer.

  • After Alice Audiobook by Gregory Maguire

    Title: After Alice
    Author: Gregory Maguire
    Narrator: Katherine Kellgren

    Release date: 10-27-15
    Publisher: Headline Digital

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
What happened to those left behind when Alice went to Wonderland?
From the best-selling author of Wicked....
When Alice fell down the rabbit hole, she found Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But how did Victorian Oxford react to Alice's disappearance?
Gregory Maguire turns his imagination to the question of underworlds, undergrounds, underpinnings - and understandings old and new, offering an inventive spin on Carroll's enduring tale.
Ada, a friend mentioned briefly in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, sets out to visit Alice but, arriving a moment too late, tumbles down the rabbit hole herself. Ada brings to Wonderland her own imperfect apprehension of cause and effect as she embarks on an odyssey to find Alice and bring her safely home from this surreal world below the world.
The White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the bloodthirsty Queen of Hearts interrupt their mad tea party to suggest a conundrum: if Eurydice can ever be returned to the arms of Orpheus, or if Lazarus can be raised from the tomb, perhaps Alice can be returned to life. Either way, everything that happens next is After Alice.
    Critic Reviews:
"Alice doesn't live here anymore - and Maguire has great fun upending the furniture to find out where she's gone. Continuing his tradition of rewriting fairy tales with an arch eye and offbeat point of view, Maguire turns his attention to Lewis Carroll and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.... A brilliant and nicely off-kilter reading of the children's classic, retrofitted for grown-ups-and a lot of fun." (Kirkus)
    "Outstanding." (Independent on Wicked)
"Amusing and will delight fans of the previous two volumes." (The Times on A Lion Among Men)
    Members Reviews:
Maguire takes on "Alice in Wonderland" ...
Maguireâs âthingâ is giving us the back story to the well-known fable, and his âWickedâ was a masterful telling of âThe Wizard of Ozâ from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West â and my introduction to this author.
Iâve read most of his later works, and theyâve been a mixed bag: âConfessions of an Ugly Stepsister: A Novelâ (a take on Cinderella) and âMirror, Mirrorâ (Snow White) were quite good; others, not as successful. The later Oz books just seemed forced, and âLost: A Novelâ was just a hot mess mash-up of too many characters from too many different totally unrelated stories.
This one is somewhere in between. This time out, he stays more or less with one story line: when Alice went down the rabbit hole, what did the people who knew her DO? Iâll admit to being a HUGE fan of Lewis Carrollâs work (as a composer, Iâve set a couple of his poems to music for choir), and Carroll has a particular style and rhythm to his writing. Maguire has clearly made an attempt to emulate that style as much as possible with witty prose, his choice of language, and rather creative plot twists. You donât just skim this; you really do have to read it in order to get the story Maguire is telling.
The story itself centers around Ada, Alice friend, and Lydia, Aliceâs sister, and their efforts both below ground (Adaâs story) and above ground (Lydia) to find the missing Alice.

    And men will die.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I didn't want to put this book down. I really enjoyed the pacing and it kept me wanting to hear what came next. I find myself getting more and more invested in Lokk and his friends. Looking forward to the next one.
Fun and fast-paced adventure--a fitting sequel
    Any additional comments?
A fun and frequently humorous adventure with a fast pace and a few twists along the way. Well-paced narration with distinctive voices for the audiobook.
    Who it's for:
    - People that read book one. It's a continuation of that, and the story opens up a bit as the characters go on an adventure. It's not as dark but just as enjoyable.
    - Sword and sorcery fans. The action is cool and there's enough of it to satisfy. Light on the magic aspects.
    - People that enjoy humorous banter. The main characters tend to be funny and jest with each other. It generally works and feels believable.
    Who it's not for:
    - People that do not like teenaged boys thinking about girls. The main characters are frequently ogling girls. It's usually played off humorously. (Note: There's no sex)
    - Fans of multiple PoVs. Aside from the prologue and epilogue, it's all from one perspective. For the book's length, I felt this was a fine decision.
Looking forward to listening to book three!
Note: I was provided a review copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

    Definitely a great book!
This was the first title I have read by Vandervort and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I absolutely couldn't put it down and read it in two days. Its a great young adult or adult read with twists and turns I never expected. The story line and dynamic characters truly fascinated me and the action in the plot was riveting. I cannot wait to read Vandervort's other titles, if they are as great as this one, I 'm in for a treat!
    Immediately engrossing!
Truly a delight to read- within a few pages, the city of Endelas Ortanos will be a living place to you, its protagonist someone you immediately want to walk those streets with. Street fights! Assassins! Shadowy conspiracies! Pirates! Why are you still here?! Go buy it!
... read of a Kim Vandervort story and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening

    Members Reviews:
Not the most impressive, but still entertaining.
I had a few issues with this book. The first was the terminology for some of the magic, that they call zipping and vanishing. Some parts of the book seemed rushed as well, and the logic of some of the characters are confusing. This is a short book even though it is supposed to be three in one volume. You will most likely guess the ending well before the end of the book as well.
The narration is alright. The narrator does not use different tones of voices or anything, so it sounds off when someone "rasps" something or speaks with an accent. She has a pleasant voice to listen to so I still gave her four stars.
I will not listen to this again. Not that it was really bad, but it was really simple, and not complex enough to hold my attention.
    Over All great, but
It has some points to work on. My main issue became the fact that much of the book is from a male characters perspective. But the female narrator had a hard time doing a male voice. It took me a while to get used to it.
Story wise I loved the world it took place in. But the plot felt a bit rushed at times. I primarily felt this with how frequently large chunks of time passed. A journey across the land feels over before it has begun. I often found myself second guessing if the characters journey/training/mission was actually over or not because it would just suddenly be at it's end.
Otherwise I really enjoyed the books. Despite using a well known theme of people controlling the elements as part of their race, the author really made this theme their own. I don't think I could accurately compare it to anything else that has used the theme before. .
I would actually really enjoy seeing a book that touches on some of the lesser seen parts of the series. The extinct fire porters. The unseen homeland of the air people. The original war that started the mess that is being resolved in this series. All would be great to see more of in a partner series.
    Engaging and Intriguing Storyline
I really enjoyed these books. Interesting plot that surprised me and drove me forward, I looked forward to listening every night!
Interesting ideas let down a little by delivery
    3.5 / 5
This book has a lot of interesting ideas in the story and it provided and interesting read, but the writing and the way it was delivered left a bit to be desired.

    Five Stars
you have to read the first one first.
    Waterbourne Exile
3.5 stars really. This second book suffers a bit from middle book syndrome. To be expected. But for fans of the first book, Murray, overall, does not disappoint. This is still a bit too much of a focus on romance over fantasy to award it a higher rating. And not just in terms of story focus. I found that the plotting elements lacked a bit of sharpness to make for a more compelling read due to some meanderings that felt a bit sappy.
But otherwise I think this makes for a strong continuation with some soft but interesting plot elements introduced to enrich the series. If you enjoyed the first, you will want to read this. And for those looking for a decent romance with fantasy elements, this might be up your alley. I am interested enough to see what and where the author goes. Or perhaps how as I do find the series so far slightly predictable but still quite readable.
    Good continuation of the story
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Waterborne Blade, in this series so I was anxiously awaiting the sequel. Ms. Murray is an excellent writer, fleshing out her characters and the world they live in nicely. As with a lot of sequels, this story moved the plot forward, but didn't really answer any of the major questions of whether Alweena would win back the crown, whether Marten would be instrumental to her quest or betray her again, and whether Weaver would be the final missing piece of the puzzle in defeating Vasic and removing him from the crown.
Now that all the pieces are in place, I can hardly wait for the final book in this series. Fans of epic fantasy will enjoy this story.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Excellent story and excellent audio book
It's a unique world the author has created. The story keeps you interested for sure. I think the narrator did excellent. Very easy to listen to. I'll definitely be purchasing the second book in the series. This one leaves you hanging.
    An Emerging Story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The story appears to be a solid introduction to a rather interesting new world, yet its with a bit of wonder but with little passion, that we never quite get into the fun stuff. It builds to what I can only imagine would be an exciting and intriguing next chapter, but admittedly not a lot happens in this one. Its not very long, so was time well spent, admittedly just would have preferred there be more to the story rather than TO BE CONTINUED...
What was one of the most memorable moments of An Emerging Threat?
The wraiths are described in just enough detail to inspire awe at their monstrous visage, yet not so detailed as to derail the fear at their assaults.
What about Matt Ryans performance did you like?
He has a clear voice, easy to understand and follow. His pace needed a bit of development and the recording could have been cleaned up a bit. There is a slight squeak every now and again. But as a narrator he was comfortable and I would like to hear what he could do with a completed story.
Do you think An Emerging Threat needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It does because the story doesn't really end.
Best book I have herd in a long time
What did you love best about An Emerging Threat?
This book is phenomenal. The description of each situation, character, and creature paints a wonderful picture that I never wanted to end. I listened to it in one sitting, and will be giving it another listen very soon!
What did you like best about this story?
The descriptions of everything are so perfect, you can see everything exactly like the author wants you to
What about Matt Ryans performance did you like?
This is one of the best narration I have experienced, It is so easy to distinguish each character and what is going on simply by listening along as he paints this amazing story for you.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved that there are two main characters, going through very similar ways, who lead you through their journey in different ways.
    Any additional comments?
    I highly recommend this book
