Part of One of My Favorite Series

I love the Savage Empire books!

Picture a land where some of the people are telepathic.

Now, picture a land where some people are telekinetic.

Now, imagine that these two lands are side by side, but the people in the land with telepaths hate and fear people with telekinesis, and that the people who have some telekinetics hate and fear telepaths.

This is the background of the whole series that starts with The Savage Empire.

This is a series that has very real, very believable characters faced with tough decisions, who have to overcome their preconceived notions to make a better world for everyone. Can they do it?

It's a long, strange trip that's interesting from beginning to end.

The enjoyment continues!

The Occupation (book two of the Shylmahn Migration) picks up a few years later in the storyline, yet leaves no gaps for the reader. The attention to detail linking this book to the first in the series left this reader chomping at the bit for the third book!

The author did a great job leading the story forward in time while introducing new elements to the story that keep me engaged. Identifying with the struggle and the tenacity of mankind, our resistance to domination by anyone or anything and the refusal to give up0hope for our future are all traits that result in another great read! Nicely done sir!

Imaginative, Gripping and highly entertaining

Another wonderful novel by one of the great science-fiction writers of our time. Mr Beshears has a real talent for painting the most marvelous scenes this his Majesty of words. Loved it!

After reading the first book of the series, "Exile", I was hooked on Draken. Emissary is equally as exciting with constant action that had me up all night reading. Dornbusch has mastered the art of making a reader feel a part of the intense drama.

Iâm pretty impressed that it still stands out to me after ...

This was the very first book I read in 2016. Iâm pretty impressed that it still stands out to me after this incredibly long year! I was running around Scotland when I spotted this - I still have yet to spot it in the States, although I know itâs here. The cover immediately drew my eye, because itâs just downright gorgeous. It was being toted as Scotlandâs author pick of the month or year or season or something, because Logan spun her tale around elements of Scottish fairy tales and folklore. Not only that, but the description promised circuses on ships and mermaids and two strong lady protags. How can I say no? So I quickly decided it was a necessary souvenir and buddy-read it with a friend of mine. It did not disappoint. The dark whimsy that Logan crafted into her world left me wanting to know more about the characters and the lands they live on (or around). Definitely worth picking up. Even though the cover difference between US and UK is ASTOUNDINGâpick it up wherever you are

Entertaining

Let me begin by saying this: I read the entire thing. Now, that may not seem like a glowing compliment, but I am not one of those people that reads a book simply because she picked it up. I am a writer myself, a college student, the mother of three children, and I work full-time. Furthermore, I am a mortal human being and I am dying as we speak. ;) I do not waste my time on reading boring books. If it's bad, I move on to something good. So when I say I read this from beginning to end, please understand that this is not a task I undertake lightly.

I think the reason I read it through was because of the pacing. Every time my mind would wander, every time I would get irritated and consider putting the book down, something crazy interesting would happen and force me to pick it back up. Really, the author gave me no choice. This book was so fascinatingly plot driven I just kept reading it.

All that said, there is a reason I gave this book three stars. Two reasons, actually. The first is that the characters did not behave like people. Half the time they behaved like a hot mess. At one point the behavior of one of the two women in the book was so ridiculous I actually rolled my eyes. Not because she was being bratty, but because she was being stupid. A pregnant woman does not pick a fist fight with a man, I wanted to tell her, that's no way to bring your baby to term. I almost put this book down at that point (not big on commitment, I) but right after that something interesting happened and I had to figure out what was going to happen next. Also, I couldn't understand why every person in the book was so desperately in love with Nicholas. He was a brutal, short-sighted little warlord. I guess he must have been really pretty? I really wanted his compatriots to see him for what he was, but that never happened, so that was a bummer.

The second star was for the editing. I know grammar is not the most important part of a book, and for some people story overrides it so thoroughly that they wouldn't even mention it, but personally, I feel that grammar is a very important tool for a writer and it behooves him to know how it works. Several times the author used the word "taunt" when he meant "taut." Also, the word "lie" was repeatedly misused.
