Written with thoughtful, multifaceted characters combined with an easygoing narrative, Brave Sucker is an enthralling read. The outsider status of the main character, Reese, within his Native American Community leads to obvious parallels to Sherman Alexieâs The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. But the social tension between the main characters of these respective stories and their native communities also warrants the comparison. In the case of Reese, his tension lies in his transvestite nature, which leads to bullying and his outsider status. Author Mel Murphy is able to capture the anguish Reese has in being an outsider due to his transvestite nature while highlighting the brutality of the actions taken against him by members of his community. Interspersing this conflict is an easygoing narrative that displays Reeseâs reactions to the obstacles in his life. Murphy is also able to wield considerable descriptive prose that peppers the story with tremendous descriptions. All in all, Brave Sucker is a phenomenal read not just for someone struggling with their communal acceptance but a for anyone that enjoys reading about the realistic troubles people who are âdifferentâ face in many societies today. This is a marvelous story and I would highly recommend for anyone, but especially young adults and teenagers.

A Good Read

Murphy has a clean style and well-drawn characters. The story -- of a Native American transvestite boy in a traditional Indian family and who is surrounded by a prejudiced community -- moves quickly, yet is rich in detail. Highly recommended.

Mel Murphy has great insight into the Western U

Mel Murphy has great insight into the Western U.S. people and their personalities. Her descriptions of places were very colorful and at many times hilarious. Iâm looking forward to reading more of Murphyâs stories.

Slice of Life

A nice story â vivid and touching, with a memorable main character whom I would like to meet in real life. Told with insight and empathy and a strong sense of place. Iâd definitely like to read more.

Francis is not James Bond and I enjoyed the novel all the more for it

This is the third book in author Janice Law's series about a fictionalized Francis Bacon. It is not necessary to know anything about the life and lore of the namesake, nor is it necessary to have read the previous two novels to enjoy this one.

The story opens in post war 1940's and Francis's gay lover suffers from PTSD although to be true to the time it is never referred to as such. David is a man who is subject to emotional outbursts and bouts of rage described as "a brave, twisted man, half-ruined by the war and busy completing the destruction". After awakening in the Berkshire countryside wearing only fishnet stockings we see the deepness of the love/hate relationship between the two men.

David leaves for Tangier but Francis soon follows. It is here that the bon vivant David takes Francis to a party and introduces him to Richard, an art collector. Francis immediately identifies a work attributed to Picasso as a forgery and thus is thrown into the undercover world of exposing the creator and getting caught up in murder, espionage and the mayhem of the world of counterfeiting art.

Even though the protagonist is based on the real Francis Bacon, an Irish born artist known for his raw imagery (male heads of the 40's and screaming Popes of the 50's) and his odd relationship with his nanny I do not think this is in any way historical fiction. There are references to the real Bacon's life but the novel seems to be more a flight of fancy into the pleasure-seeking, world traveling, hobnobbing world of post war Europe.

The homosexual exploits of both men are presented in a nonchalant way without any attempt to milk the subject for titillation. They just have casual encounters with beach boys or off-the-cuff meet ups. It's how they are in that time and place.

I liked that there was mystery, murder, Russian spies, British spies and conspiracy all of which was being handled by an unassuming man who was only looking for love and approval in an exotic foreign setting. Francis is not James Bond and I enjoyed reading about him all the more for it.

Very Good Mysteries Indeed!

I'm porting over my review from Nights In Berlin because I'm actually reviewing the series (four of them) that I both acquired from Vine and bought with my own money.

These Francis Bacon Mysteries are for my teenage Grandson (17) who is gay. He loves the fact that the main character is gay and is a bit of a rascal if I may say so myself. I read one to be sure of what I was getting for him although he had requested them.

A fascinating read with great insights and sharp observations. In each story, I found myself identifying with the characters' vulnerability, naive and tender emotions, and sense of befuddlement about our mysterious world. The author made me recall, or perhaps identify for the first time, how I felt as an adolescent and young man searching for my place in the world. The author is a prescient outside observer - looking in, remembering - and here resurrecting - the ordinary and profound people and experiences that have come his way.

Reading this book is like spending a few days with a bright

Reading this book is like spending a few days with a bright, observant friend on a not very tight schedule. The stories are positive & satisfying but appealingly loose; a sort of fiction vérité, shot in often gay, often urban settings. Typical detail, taken almost at random: "He was getting used to the loud sound the packing tape made when it was peeled off of the roll." Right? If you're like me & love those fleeting, sharply turned moments that most authors overlook, you'll have a good time here.

Engaging, erotic, clever collection of short storiesâa form perfect for our low attention times. Savored randomly over several months. Great period and place detail. Who could not relish when naked boyfriends mundane cleaning chores evolve into erotic chocolate fondue in seven pages (Chocolate-Dipped). Made me think of what I could have done with Marshall Field Frango mints. Read, enjoy the entire collection.

Really grabs you!

A wonderful collection of stories...each one draws you in immediately, for the characters are real and grounded and make sense from their first thought. The mix of places, times, and perspectives makes the pacing interesting and keeps you turning the page. I read it in one sitting!

Great short stories for young people getting to know themselves to gain confidence in themselves and become proud of who they are.

Bittersweet and beautiful

Don't let the rather lofty blurb put you off. Robert Hyers' anthology of short stories is a pleasure to read. Amidst the pin-sharp observations and savage wit, there are also gripping, staggeringly-detailed and well-written tales, all set amidst the gay club scene.

And a what a scene it is; dripping with drag queens, twinks, muscle-boys, and ordinary, newly-out men stumbling around as they try to find their feet in a vivid, complicated new world. The fashion, the music, the threat of homophobic violence at every turn. And the drugs...

There are a LOT of drugs, with some graphic details of their use and aftermath, enough to make a middle-aged lady clutch her pearls. Nothing is really glamorised. Instead, it is searingly honest, telling of the dark side of all the seemingly carefree, hedonistic fun. There's nothing in the way of balls-to-the-wall sex, but it is implied, and that makes it all the more potent. It's a heady, painful mix that will ring true for many men, whatever their age, race and financial circumstances.

It is all here, an oozing, sticky melting-pot that you will want to stick your finger into again and again, even though sometimes, the ingredients are hard to digest. I read this all in one gulp, as once I had read the first story, I couldn't actually put the book down. This is a world I'm unfamiliar with; a frightening, colourful, dangerous world. It is hard to choose a standout, but the stories that stick in my mind the most are Bosom Buddies and Bacchae. The first is the stage performance of two drag queens, one reaching for the stars, the other falling from them. Any story that features RuPaul's Drag Race will immediately have my attention, and the result is savage but hilarious.

They decided on Leslie Evans instead, so it could be gender-neutral, and then switched it to Lesley Evans, which made it more specifically female. Welcome to publishing, young man. It's clear to me now, almost 60 years later, that the book ought to set sail under its original title, and since I'm republishing it myself, that's a decision I get to make. It's also clear to me that Shadows is in fact Jill Emerson's very first novel, as it's far more of a piece with Warm And Willing and Enough of Sorrow than with anything else I've written. So that's how I'll publish it, right? As Shadows, dammit, by Jill Emerson.

UGH!!!

I DO NOT reccomend this book at all!

I thought I would give it a chance, even though it was written by a male but boy did that turn out to be a mistake. TYPICAL hetro conclusion! Spoiler Alert..... The girl just needs to find the right guy. Sorry I bought this book. So disappointed because up until the last few chapters, I was really interested but of course. Girl gets girl only to realize, she loves boy. Ugh! So disappointed.

Like it a lot

Read all 5 books and wish it would have been just one since they are short and can't be read individually. I was also bother by the tons of spelling errors. Overall, the story was great.

Awesome book!

This book is just too good! It's so hard to put down that once you start you just have to finish it to find out what happened. This series needs to be read in order to really be enjoyed. The storyline is unique and refreshing and well written. This book is one that I would recommend to friends and is one that will be in the re-read pile.

Liking the point of view of Tony but hating that he cross the line on Lil Johnny ~_~ & poor Peter gets more tangled & tangled in the web ~_~
