An excellent heartwrenching read

No surprise this is nominated for a Shirley Jackson award. Powerful and twisted, dual narratives give us Lord Byron's struggle to write through a traumatic near death experience and an aging Professor's guilt about old transgressions. Lyrical, strong, compelling...well worth reading.

Highly recommended. Excited to read his next book

Eads knows how to write. His characters are deep and I was blown away by his interpretation of Byron. Highly recommended. Excited to read his next book.

Tiresome reading

I didn't find much of interest in this collection of short stories.

If you like "Girls" you'll love this book!

Wonderful collection of stories. One I particular still haunts me weeks after reading the book. If you know San Francisco at all, you'll enjoy the author's evocation of place and time. Highly recommend.

Outstanding, suspenseful and thought-provoking

Following Shepard is a disturbingly poignant historical novel exploring the volatile climate of the gay rights movement in the wake of the murder of Matthew Shepard. Set in 1999, the story begins with two college students on a road trip to the site of Shepard's death - one in search of his boyfriend, who has disappeared, the other the journalism student he asks to join him and tell his story. It is the shocking discovery they find there, however, that reveals a deeper layer to the mystery and changes the course of their investigation. Though the book undoubtedly creates awareness and raises important questions about LGBT rights, it paints the story's historical backdrop in a way that avoids making it a book purely about issues. Its characters are distinct, likeable individuals whose past and present struggles ring true to the reader and create a sense of both sympathy and identification. The story itself, though containing more backstory than some readers may be used to, is well-paced with a sense of suspense that makes for a page-turning read that leads to a cathartic and startling conclusion. This is an important novel for all readers, one that will leave them thinking long after the final page.

Excellent debut novel by Bob Grannan

Following Shepard hit me right in the gut -- it's a surprising, suspenseful novel with well-drawn characters and a plot that holds the reader in a vice grip. If you're a fan of finely crafted storylines and intense emotional twists, then you should enjoy Finding Shepard.

Beautiful and painful

A truly beautiful and painful journey into small town life and the battle raging within it. Quick read but well done.

Authentic and inspired story!

Like a good, suspenseful chase scene, Following Shepard draws you into a familiar mystery through a whirlwind of events, memories, and thoughts of what could be. Along with beautifully thematic character relationships, the authorâs thoughtful storytelling subtly serves up a nostalgic uncertainty all too easily found at the intersection of a still-developing masculinity and young adulthood. A worthwhile read with insightful historical relevance that will keep your attention through to the last word.

50 Shades of the Rainbow

I just read the first four "books" in this series. Each is only about 40 pages long so they are basically short stories. Because they are brief, it's hard to review them separately. In many ways, they are all chapters of the same story.

In the first book, the beginning is repeated. I thought maybe it was going to be some time travel type story but it was just careless editing, and there are some other editing errors in all of the books. Fortunately, they are minor errors. The brevity and the errors are the negatives. On the positive side, I liked the characters and the building of the relationships and "family" they are creating together. The story was engrossing enough that I read all four installments in about an hour and I was ready for the next. Maggie is the protagonist who narrates the story so the plot revolves around her. She owns her own business which gets damaged shortly after she meets Zelia, an archaeologist, and her romantic interest. Beatty is Maggie's teen-aged assistant who may or may not be lesbian and who has a 3 year old daughter with Downs syndrome. There are some other characters in the book who appear in all the installments thus far. They are all likable and all add to the story as it unfolds.

In my opinion, this is not really a romance story although there is a romance. Those readers who like explicit sex scenes will be disappointed, by the way. This story is more about building friendships, creating family, and setting down roots. I think there is definitely a place for that in lesbian fiction and this is a welcome change of pace.

A short work of fiction from Simon Graves, I actually didnât even read at all. I listened to it! I got the download of Happy Anniversary off Audible â which was exciting to me because I only recently got into listening to novels and stories through audio. Iâd always thought recorded stories would be more boring than whatever voice Iâd conjure in my head by manually reading, but Iâve been proven wrong time and time again â with Happy Anniversary coming in as the latest example.

The narrator, Noah DeBiase, vividly recites the tragic story of a man following his possibly unfaithful lover and gives it equal measures of passion and sadness. Definitely a short worth listening to, with a Twilight Zone-esque twist ending I didnât expect!

A New Light in the Historical Novel Genre

Author David Reddish in this work, follows in the footsteps of Mary Renault in her classic portrayal of pre-Christian life in her novels about Alexander the Great and other portions of ancient history. The major difference in this novel is the element of Christian faith and what it means to believe. Embedded in the story is a lively discussion of how Christianity has been modified by believers who held political power and sought to consolidate, systemize, and unify the faith both for its survival and for personal political benefit. The faith has been modified over and over again to address specific questions and to help it grow. The fact that one can go from a gentile to a Christian without first becoming Jewish is evidence that the Faith had been modified for both spiritual reasons and to expand the franchise of salvation. These issues are touched upon within the latitude and license of this novels format. It is an interesting discussion and well worth reading this version of the Sergius and Bacchus story in order to ponder the deeper issues of belief and consider just who is driving the spiritual bus of belief and what motivates those who have always sought to modify belief and faith for their own reasons.

FACT: There are several historical references to the story of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. One version attributes the story to Emperor Galerius circa 305 to 311 AD. Author David Reddish chose the version popularized by Italian scholar Pio Franchi de Cavalieri attributing the martyrdom to Emperor Julian the Apostate in 363 AD. There is some scholarly dispute as to whether these two individuals actually ever existed as people rather than myths. There is no dispute that Sergius and Bacchus are recognized as Saints of the Catholic Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches and are depicted in hundreds of icons and multiple churches and chapels named in their honor. As such these are recognized religious figures embodying attributes of faith sufficient to be canonized as Saints (heroes of the Christian faith).

The Roman Catholic Church honored Saints, Sergius and Bacchus on its liturgical calendar until 1969 when (sadly in this reviewers opinion) they were de-canonized due to lack of historical evidence pointing to specific individuals that were proven to have lived.
