    Wonderful
I was transported back to the late 80s and placed in front of my television.
    The Doctor visits a library.
Another great audio story. Staring the seventh Doctor and Ace and the evil Daleks. This story also introduces a new alien life form made of water. As I said another great story.

    Middling
Would you try another book written by Marc Platt or narrated by Peter Purves and Tony Millan ?
Yes. I've found some of Platt's Doctor Who work very enjoyable, notably his Unbound plays. Not so much his novels, or his grossly overrated Cyberman origin story.
Peter Purves is always worth a listen. He's not the best William Hartnell impersonator (William Russell probably is) but he's good enough.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Remove the (other) alien element.
This vexes me with the Doctor Who pseudohistoricals. The first time they did one - with the Meddling Monk - it was a novelty, and a significant story element in its own right.
But it's long since been overworked into a tiresome lily-gilding exercise. Here, for instance, it's as if 1812 Russia isn't an interesting enough setting in its own right for our time travellers, so a generic alien needs adding to the mix. It really should be possible for the TARDIS to land somewhere in Earth's history without somebody else landing there too.
I can't pretend I didn't know it was going to happen - it's hinted at strongly enough in the blurb - but I hoped this would at least offer a fresh approach to the idea. But it really doesn't. The alien's special ability also means the twist is bleeding obvious.
That's not to say it fails to entertain. The TARDIS crew's arrival in Russia (not far from Moscow) is enjoyable, and it was pleasing to have them stay for several months rather than simply pop in, look around, fight off the evil alien, and pop out. Use of honest to goodness narration (as opposed to contrived "Look, that ski pole is rising off the ground of its own accord" dialogue) is always a good thing.
So, not a total waste of time, but rather less than it could have been.
What does Peter Purves and Tony Millan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
It's a play written for the audio medium, not a book.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Given the nature of this product, it's exceedingly unlikely that this would be made into a film, but yeah, why not?

    Absolute Perfection
Feminist witch fiction with a satisfying ending. Slatter does a miraculous job writing about violence in non-triggering, non-salacious ways. Gorgeous and masterful. Marisa Calin's narration is flawless, though her voice cast the protagonist/narrator as much younger than described, so that occasionally brought me out of the story. Totally worth it, though- she's an incredible narrator and lovely to listen to.

Brought to her side by the power of a mysterious calling card, the Doctor and Clara are given one of their unlikeliest assignments yet. Yet it is one that will have far-reaching consequences.... Many years later, on the homeworld of the alien Golhearn, the time travellers once again meet Diana - but this time the stakes are much higher.

    Members Reviews:
A lovely mystery with many interesting character insights
James Goss continues to delight with this Twelfth Doctor story. A well-woven tale with many mysteries layered upon one another. Looking forward to the next installment.
Nice to get these characters together again
What did you love best about Doctor Who: The Gods of Winter?
Since it's been two years since we got to have the Doctor and Clara together, it was nice to hear them having a story together again (though I know this came out a while ago). It satisfied that particular itch and I'm glad it came from a writer like Goss, who I've enjoyed before. Plus, grumpy-12 is pretty much the best 12 and we get more of that in this story. Clara got to have moments of being the quick-witted and on-the-ball companion that I've always loved about her character and have missed having in the show.
What other book might you compare Doctor Who: The Gods of Winter to and why?
I've really enjoyed James Goss's work with Doctor Who novels, since he just nails the tone and voice really well. The Blood Cell is a great entry from him that mixes things up a little bit with how it tells the story.
What about Clare Higginss performance did you like?
Hearing anyone attempt to talk like 12 brings me joy, but she was a solid performer and narrator.
    Any additional comments?
It's a nice nugget of a story and just satisfying to listen to. Satisfied the itch I've had for some 12 'n Clara adventures.
it isnt the Doctor reading but it is a good story
Narrator did a good job, especially voicing the Doctor, but I have been spoiled by the David Tennant books. Story is good as well
Throw away title, throw away book.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Depends on the friend. I find any situation where the title of the book is miss matched completely to the content to be garbage throw away fiction, but the ending was cute so if someone was a big enough fan I could see them reading it.
What could James Goss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Make it a short story. There was not enough too it to be as long as it was. I had a hard time caring about anything the characters were doing because they were so flat.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jon Culshaw reads this exciting novelisation of a 1975 TV adventure featuring the Fourth Doctor.
At a time in the far-off future, Earth has become uninhabitable. A selection of humanity is placed, deep-frozen, in a fully automated space station to await the day of their return to Earth.
Thousands of years later, the Doctor arrives with his companions, Sarah and Harry, and finds things going suspiciously wrong. The station is under attack from the giant Wirrn, deadly creatures who, in their lust for power, now threaten the future of the whole human race.
Jon Culshaw reads this unabridged novelisation written by Ian Marter, who played Harry Sullivan in the original BBC TV series.

Re: Culshaw is terrific with amazing voice acting.
If you could sum up Doctor Who and the Ark in Space in three words, what would they be?
If you are a fan of Tom Baker-era Dr. Who and the many classic stories of that era, then you will love the two audiobooks narrated and voice-acted by Jon Culshaw.
He does a spot-on, warmhearted, and accurate impression that often makes me laugh out loud in its exacting precision and care. All the nuances in the line readings are there and they are just wonderful.
Not to go on and on but it's almost like stumbling into a local bar and discovering the most incredible cover band ever with members who clearly have a love for the material and who are clearly fans themselves.
Listening to this audiobook brought back memories of my latch-key youth when the local PBS station would run two episodes back to back and I could imagine being whisked off into time and space with my first crush Elizabeth Sladen.
I would pay 2x as much for this wonderfully-realized nostalgic audio presentations. They are even surprisingly superior than the Dr. Who audio adaptations where cast members read a somewhat flat narration from the original episode's stage direction that is tarted up with a few sounds effects from that actual episode.
In summary, these two Baker-era Culshaw books are far, far superior to those and in my opinion just terrific.
Have you listened to any of Jon Culshaws other performances before? How does this one compare?
    First-rate.
    Any additional comments?
Please commission more of these Tom Baker-era classic episodes with full sound effects to be read by Jon Culshaw. In addition to spending millions of dollars on new, original Amazon Video productions, I would respectfully argue that these far less-expensive Jon Culshaw Dr. Who adaptations would bring Audible members of a certain age, far more appreciation and enjoyment.
Wonderful classic 4th Doctor (is there really any other?)
Bug eyed space monsters, a seemingly dead ship floating in space and alien machines working at cross puropses
    Brilliant Culshaw.
Jon Culshaw excels again in this Doctor Who reading. His narration fully conveys the menace and disturbing nature of the story. Highly recommended.

    Members Reviews:
    A new Second Doctor adventure.
Great novel. Mrs Wills does a great job narrating the story, she does a lot of funny voices for all the characters. This adventure involves the 2 Doctor, Polly, Ben, and Jamie, getting involved in the aftermath of the English civil war.The tardis crew are separated in the beginning of the book and must fight to get back to each other. The Doctor and Jamie get arrested on thump up charges, they meet Oliver Cromwell and must convince him not to kill them. Ben gets pressed-ganged on to ship with a mysterious mission to Amsterdam, and Polly get tricked into helping Royal subjects rescue King Charles. It's very complicated plot involving Pirates, assignations, and the trouble of young lovers. Great story, i hope they release more stories like this.
    Excellent narration
Books don't always work well as audio books. Too many characters, a performer who lacks the ability to do a lot of voices or has an unpleasant voice...a lot of factors can detract from the listener's enjoyment. This historical Doctor Who adventure could have been a disaster, as there are MANY characters and quick a complex story. I was a little worried that Anneke Wills was chosen just because she played Polly originally. Luckily, she did an excellent job reading Mark Gatiss's novel. The books itself is good, with spies, pirates, and lots of political intrigue set in the days preceding the execution of King Charles.
    Anneka Wills is excellent
If you could sum up Doctor Who: The Roundheads in three words, what would they be?
    Interesting and authentic
What was one of the most memorable moments of Doctor Who: The Roundheads?
The Doctor being confronted with his book by Cromwell's son.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Jamie and the Doctor at the ice market
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
Anneke Wills was excellent. I kept thinking it was a different person reading dialogue, but it was all her.

    Summer Falls by Amelia Williams
In the tradition of Enid Blyton's "Famous Five' and "Secret Seven" series, Amelia Williams has woven a tale to delight children of all ages.
"Summer Falls" tells the tale of a girl named Kate, who has come to live in the village of Watchcombe with her mother. Upon discovering an old painting titled "The Lord of Winter" in a charity shop, events begin to happen which will change Kate's life forever. Assisted by the local museum caretaker, Barnabas, a talking cat and friends Armand and Milo, Kate begins her heroic quest to save the world from the elusive Lord of Winter.
Amelia Williams is the editor of the crime novel series featuring super sleuth Melody Malone, and a bestselling author of books for children. She and her husband Rory live in New York with their son, Anthony. The Williams have a daughter, Melody, who is employed as an archaeologist.
(This novella appeared in the Doctor Who episode "The Bells of Saint John." The credited author is James Goss and the cover was designed by Lee Binding.)
    A Children's Reader
It is with a child that any young person identifies their surroundings. Children love magic and simple pleasure. We forget that when we get older, and then, a man who aches for his childhood hobby becomes a threat to a town. As the 11th Doctor would say, magic is cool. Rationality and logical explanations take too long when you only have one day to enjoy something wonderful.
    Fun, fast-paced adventure!
This book appears briefly in the episode "The Bells of St. John" (season 7 part 2) of Doctor Who and is ostensibly written by previous companion Amy Pond. I do love this new trend to feature books in the Doctor Who episodes and have them actually exist! It reads like a children's adventure tale, but also like a Doctor Who adventure with the helpful "Curator" appearing to help the children as the Lord of Winter comes. Kate is an unusually determined and focused girl who doesn't have a lot of faith in grown-ups, and when she wakes up in a wintry landscape with no adults around, she has to step up and figure out how to thwart the Lord of Winter. This story is very exciting and fast-paced and while Kate bears some similarities to Amy Pond's spunkiness in my mind, Kate is a great character on her own.

    Fantastic
Loved this when I watched it on tv. The book was fantastic too. Fantastic reading too.
Who's better Sherlock Holmes or The Doctor?
One of my favorite Doctor who stories. It has a great plot, with my favorite Doctor. It has bit of everything, Sherlock Holmes, Phantom of the Opera, Fu Manchu, Jack the Ripper, Dracula, and Time Machine. It was as the Scriptwriter Robert Holmes tried to combine every plot from the Victoria era in the story. Terrence Dicks did a great job with the novelization.
    Classic Doctor Who. Well done!
The narrator provides just the right tone to this classic story that kept me listening and relistening. A magician in the story bested by the Doctor's magical prowess was one fun part.
    Brilliant!

    Thrilling story!
    Any additional comments?
When I bought it, this book only had a one-star rating by one person. I don't understand why anyone would just give it one star. It is exciting, witty (I laughed out loud at one point) and has a really complicated plot (though it isn't hard to follow). A correction to the description: it is narrated by Jean Marsh (who played Sara Kingdom in the original series) AND Peter Purves, who played Steven Taylor. Another reader who should not be forgotten is Nicholas Briggs, who does all the Dalek voices. Marsh, Purves and Briggs are all terrific, of course. Long may they keep doing Doctor Who in all its various forms!
    The Great Epic part one.
The closest Doctor Who ever got to an epic style like the Lord Of the Rings saga, was the Daleks Masterplan. It was longest serial of the whole original series. 12 episodes in all. The first Doctor meets the Daleks one last time. Lot people died in this serial, nobody was safe even the Doctors Companions. By the end two will die. No one has ever seen it since it originally went out, because some idiot at BBC destroyed most of the episodes. Luckily John Peel was finally was allowed to novelize the story. Which concludes in the next book. Can hardly wait to listen to it.
    the daleks masterpiece
    Any additional comments?
I cant believe someone gave this book such a poor rating, it's one of the best classic doctor who audios i've listened to, both narrators do a brilliant job of bringing the first doctor and his companions to life. You could argue that it's a little overlong and some of the mini adventures they have just drag things out but they do add a bit of much needed humor to quite a serious story and whats not to love about a story that has the daleks at their devious scheming best, It's such a shame I'm never going to see the television version of this story as most of the episodes are missing, but this book along with the second part(the mutation of time) more than make up for it.
