Parents and teachers have told her and her friends they have their whole lives ahead of them. After high school they can be anything they want to be. They've been told that they are special and unique. Turns out their "whole lives" might not last past the end of the school year. Reality is shifting. The powerful and wealthy in Ridgemont have more than money to play with. The Ridgemont Chamber of Commerce has their own end game. And for Evelyn and her friends, what should be a coming of age teen comedy is about to descend into madness and terror.

    Fun and suspenseful.
I read this a while back and keep thinking about it. Things happen in subtle and then sweeping waves. The major issues facing our characters are right there in their faces, but they don't see it. When it's all finally revealed everything goes haywire. One of the strong elements in this one is how you're left to worry but not panic, until it's right up on you. Intriguing throughout. Quick read, and as the title suggests, it's fun.
    Worth the read. Well written.
First book I've read through in a long while. What will happen next? Hoping for further adventures of Dean. Found it engaging and suspenseful.
    Great writing and great plot
Surf's up, dudes! This quirky sci-fi send-up of Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a winner.
The characters in this novel are based loosely on the movie (hence the name), but that's where the similarities end. In this well-written story that's partly coming-of-age and horror mashup, the kids must get to the bottom of mysterious forces threatening the small coastal town of Ridgemont, and the tale spins out expertly in the hands of the author.
Evelyn MacIntire and her teenage friends risk discovery by hooded cult members as they try to solve the mystery before it's too late, taking over everyone in Ridgemont -- including Evelyn's parents, the school's principal, and the members of the sinister Esoteric Order of Dagon, a new church in the community.
The school stoner, Dean Bolek, is increasingly troubled by visions of jelly-like waves and menacing sea creatures the size of a barn. Chris Patkany, and his friend Mike watch helplessly as some strange force fries a full-blown Orca whale at Marine World, where they work.
Before all this started, Evelyn's biggest worry was that she wouldn't lose her virginity until she was in her twenties, when she could escape the strict scrutiny of her parents.

    Quintessential 7th Doctor
Would you consider the audio edition of Doctor Who: Illegal Alien to be better than the print version?
Difficult to say to be fair. But let me say this. I was never a fan of Sophie Aldred or Ace in the show. That said Sophie Aldred is fantastic as a storyteller. She brings this to life effortlessly, so much so that the story not her vocal takes the lead. She only becomes, for want of a better word, visible, when she is being Ace. All this tells me she has talents we were never given an opportunity to see. Amazing job.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
London 1940, The blitz is the last thing you should be frightened of.
    Nazis. Ace. Cybermen.
    Interesting combination of foes.
Sophie is actually a really good voice actor. However, I had a chuckle when she accidentally made Sylvester McCoy's doctor sound German... a rare error.
Towards the end of the story when the action hots up and due to the growing number of German army characters, additional concentration is required to work out who reports to who, and to follow the German characters storylines.
Worth the read for any doctor who fan.

    For Completists Only
This final play works really only as a nostalgia piece and Big Finish deserves credit for making it available for fans and even getting the original actor to play the Doctor (Trevor Martin) and the daughter of the actress who played Jenny (Charlie Hayes) to come back. Still, as production, it's definitely the weakest of the stage plays. Essentially, it's a script laden with Doctor Who clichés that was worth seeing when it was produced in the 1970s because of the visual spectacle it offered for families watching the show on stage. The companions present particular issues. Jimmy is probably the least likable idea for a companion forever. And the scene where they have the Doctor express how he much appreciates these people he meant an hour ago seems a bit silly, though since this is a new regeneration, I guess that could be part of this alternate Doctor's personality.
Overall, this isn't horrible, but this release is for nostalgia and Doctor Who completists.

Turns a cartoon villain into a character
What made the experience of listening to Doctor Who - Davros the most enjoyable?
A sensible range of characters: enough to ensure variety, not so many that it's confusing who's who.
I was also taken by the amount of nuance. Besides Davros himself, there are people who are ruthless without being evil for evil's sake.
Who was your favorite character and why?
After the Doctor himself, Davros. And this surprised the heck out of me.
I'm quite rare among Doctor Who fans in that I think Genesis of the Daleks - the story that introduced Davros - is pretty poor. Davros dies at the end of his debut story, and I really hate it when characters are brought back from the dead. And honestly, what's he got going for him? He's a man in a mask whose wheelchair happens to be the lower part of a Dalek. And he rants a lot.
I avoided getting this play for years, partly because of this.
But as it turns out, not only is he fleshed out as a character, but his backstory seems much more interesting than it did before. I actually might enjoy Genesis of the Daleks if I ever watch it again. Well, maybe not go that far...
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I especially enjoyed the flashbacks to pre-Dalek Skaro.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not wanting to give too much away, but there's a moment when Davros does *not* deliver a tedious, "Ha ha I was lying all along, I'm actually really evil!" What we get instead is much more satisfying.
    Any additional comments?
This play is primarily for Doctor Who fans. If you've never heard of the Daleks before, this probably won't mean much to you. On the other hand you don't have to be steeped in Who lore to enjoy it.

Many years ago, on a dark and stormy night, the disfigured and enigmatic Dr John Smith invited his closest friends, Inspector Victor Schaeffer and his wife, Jacqueline, to a dinner to celebrate his birthday. A few hours later all the occupants in that house had been changed some were dead, others mentally scarred forever by the events of that night.
So, what happened to the distinguished dinner guests on that evening? Perhaps we'll never know. But two clues have led to much speculation found outside the study window, a charred umbrella with a curved red handle; and found inside the house, a blood-stained copy of Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
For one person this night represented an ending: an ending to 1,000 years of darkness and an ending to 10 years of light. But for everyone else, is there no end to this one night of hell?

    The Best Master Story
The best and most serious Master story and the darkest of the villains trilogy. This story is the definitive psychological look at the Master and his relationship to the Doctor. The story starts with Part One establishing the atmosphere and mood of the colony and the fact that the Master has lost his memory and living as Doctor John Smith as well as meeting his two friends. The middle episodes build the tension leading to stunning cliffhanger at the end of episode three. The final episode is one twist, turn, and punch in the gut after the other. It's a very dark story that never quite loses all hope.
The story is economically written with a minimal amount of characters and all the actors are just spot on. The material is superb. It manages to be philosophical without being boring or preachy. Beevers is simply masterful from start to finish and this is also one of Sylvester McCoy's best performances.
this story may be the best one I've listened to yet and I'd say I've ...
I listen to these Doctor Who audio stories through Hoopla Digital (all you need is a library card). I must say, this story may be the best one I've listened to yet and I'd say I've listened to about 20 (and many aren't that great, but this one is good). I agree with what the other reviewer said. I will also add that its fun at times because they touch on some stuff the Doctor & Master apparently did in their childhood. Things I hadn't heard about in other stories. Things that can explain a good bit about them and their relationship.
OOOh what a great story to listen to at Halloween
OOOh what a great story to listen to at Halloween. But, it does go into the Doctor/Master relationship a bit more and some understanding why the Doctor can never seem to kill the Master. The story very good and has a few surprises in the characters. Is the Master evil due to Nature or Nurture?
It is a wonderful story---turn the lights out when you listen to this one.

    What an amazing adaptation
This sent shivers down my spine hearing Pats son speaking his dad's lines. This a perfect adaptation of Ian Marter's story a thoroughly recommendable audible release
    A cracking good listen!
David Troughton's narration is great - his voice very reminicent of his much missed father. Marter's gritty interpretation of the story is fabulous. I recommend.
Just far too many '-ily' words
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Great voice acting and production but I just could not get past the poor prose.
he said, menacingly. she looked Icily. he said darkly, rightly, sinisterly, innocently and so on.
The worst for me was 'she glanced at the photos admiringly.' Why couldn't it have been simply (oh no, now I'm doing it) 'She admired the photographs.'
yes, the novel is unabridged but it grates so....so...jarringly?
PS over use of Avderbs is a personal pet peeve and this is just ridiculous!
Has Doctor Who: Cybermen - the Invasion put you off other books in this genre?
    Anything by Ian Marter.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    The voice acting was superlative.
    Any additional comments?
Maybe I'm being a fool, he said solemnly. But I just wish i could refund this!
    Action packed
Well read by David Troughtin. Looking fir help to repair some TARDIS circuits, The Doctor finds a conspiracy fronted by a multinational electronics firm. Kidnap, espionage, murder and mayhem with a final pitched battle against the invaders. A welcome return of UNIT led by The Brigadier (first appeared fighting the Yeti ) as military firepower.
