The Tardis takes the Doctor and Rose to a destination in deep space - Justicia, a prison camp stretched over seven planets, where Earth colonies deal with their criminals. While Rose finds herself locked up in a teenage borstal, the Doctor is trapped in a scientific labour camp. Each is determined to find the other, and soon both Rose and the Doctor are risking life and limb to escape in their distinctive styles. But their dangerous plans are complicated by some old enemies. Are these creatures fellow prisoners as they claim, or staging a takeover for their own sinister purposes? Mediocre story, excellent narrator
The Doctor takes Rose to her first alien planet where they are immediately captured, separated, and imprisoned on different planets. As Rose fights to get back to the Doctor, the Doctor uncovers an alien plot to... oh, I don't want to spoil it. The idea is interesting and we see some familiar baddies, but the execution just didn't work for me. Because the Doctor and Rose are separated, what we essentially have are two different stories and almost no interaction between the two main characters. Another problem is the story drags on far too long. Three times I thought the story was wrapping up, only to see that I had several hours of book left to go. Normally, this would be a good thing, but not here. I should have loved this, but I didn't.
That said, I also didn't hate it. The author did a great job of keeping both the Doctor and Rose in-character. We see Rose cope and rebel in a hellish environment and we see glimpses of the Ninth Doctor's soft, compassionate side (always a nice juxtaposition with his normally prickly and hardened demeanor). I also enjoyed some of the original characters in this story. And, as always, Camille Coduri knocks it out of the ballpark as the narrator. I would recommend this story to fans of the Ninth Doctor and those who really enjoy Season 1 bad guys.
    An enjoyable listen
Where does Doctor Who: The Monsters Inside rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Compared to the other Doctor Who books I've listened to, this one is in the top half.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The performer's Rose was done very well, she also made the alien characters come alive pretty well.
    Any additional comments?
This was a solid doctor who book. The story would have been a two part episode had it been made for TV. It also makes sense within the context of the 9th doctor's one season. The themes and resolution of the story make sense and feel like the first season of the new who tv.
The sonic runs out of batteries?!
Mostly this just felt like an excuse to revive a potential foil. Was there no vinegar in the kitchen??
    Not the best
Not my favorite although i enjoyed it. The story is a little bit rambly. Recommended to dr fans but probably not a second go through
    Pure science fiction
The monster inside is a great story for DW fans. Perfectly narratid by Jackie Tyler

    Publisher's Summary:
In a world where magic is illegal, Cassel Sharpe has the most deadly ability of all: With one touch, he can transform any object - including a person - into something else entirely. And that makes him a wanted man. The Feds are willing to forgive all his past crimes if hell only leave his con-artist family behind and go straight. But why does going straight feel so crooked?
For one thing, it means being on the opposite side of the law from Lila, the girl he loves. Shes the daughter of a mob boss and, though Cassel is pretty sure she can never love him back, he cant stop obsessing over her. Which would be bad enough, even if her father wasnt keeping Cassels mother prisoner until she returns the priceless diamond she scammed off him years ago. Too bad she cant remember where she put it.
The Feds say they need Cassel to get rid of a powerful man who is spinning dangerously out of control. But if they want Cassel to use his unique talent to hurt people, what separates the good guys from the bad ones? With no easy answers and no one he can trust, love might be the most dangerous gamble of all.

Can You Live Long Enough to Make The Big Score?
Holly Black concludes her Curse Workers trilogy with a bang as Cassel Sharpe finds himself playing both sides of the law - doing his best to make sure that he, his friends, and family come out of it alive. Both the mob and the feds want Cassel for the special talent he possesses, and as the story progresses, it gets harder to tell the good guys from the bad guys.
And yet - for a story involving murder, mobsters, con artists, and all other moral shades of gray - it's surprising how incredibly fun this book is.
As much as the cons and the crime, what anchors Black Heart (and the rest of this series) are the characters and their relationships. It's great to see everyone again - Sam and Danica, even when they hate each other, make you feel like you're hanging out with old friends. Lila Zacharov, now working for her father's brand of organized crime, gets to show her ruthless side, and it does not disappoint. The angst between her and Cassel is pitch-perfect - it's never in question whether or not they're in love; what you're not sure of is if it will work - whether or not they're lives are just too different. But Black does an especially excellent job of ratcheting up the complexity of Cassel's relationship to his brother Baron, making Baron one of the most compelling and interesting characters in the series. If Black comes back to these characters and this world, it would be really fascinating to see more of Baron.
Jesse Eisenberg's narration plays it all straight, his voice never giving away who is safe, who is dangerous, and who is conning you. His reading is perfect for these books.
It's a solid ending to an outstanding trilogy. I hope one day we get more Curse Workers books.
Jesse Eisenberg's voice warms my heart. Spot on.
What did you love best about Black Heart?
Excellent story, great characters (Cassel for ever!!!) and Jesse's interpretation is perfection.
What other book might you compare Black Heart to and why?
Of course, White Cat and Red Glove.
Which character as performed by Jesse Eisenberg was your favorite?
Cassel!!!! His voice breaks in all the right moments.

    Publisher's Summary:
When the TARDIS is buffeted by "time slippage", the Doctor experiences a terrible vision of the end of everything. Tracking the source of the disruption, he takes Rory and Amy to what appears to be an English public school in the 1950s. But the friends discover that there are some very unusual things about Darkstar Academy.
For a start the prefects carry guns, and then there is the strange force field that surrounds the perimeter. Not to mention the foot-long, crab-like creatures with spiny, armored bodies.... The Doctor discovers that the whole place is in terrible danger, but with a swarm of carnivorous creatures on the loose, what can he, Amy, and Rory do to help prevent a terrible disaster?
Written specially for audio by Mark Morris, Darkstar Academy features the Doctor, Amy, and Rory as played by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television. It is read by Alexander Armstrong.

    Five Stars
Another fun Doctor Who audiobook. I recommend.
    Fun story
Enjoyable fix of Dr. Who while waiting for the BBC series to resume. Easy to listen to and well written.
    Darkstar Academy
This was an awful Doctor Who audiobook. Not the worst, but definitely up there.
The narrator, Alexander Armstrong, who is the voice of Mr. Smith in the Sarah Jane Adventures, is terrible. He doesn't make any attempt to do the imitations of the Doctor, Amy and Rory, instead choosing to read in his own voice for all three with no discernation. It is beyond strange to hear Amy without a Scottish accent, even a bad one. He also doesn't do a good job at inflections either. The Doctor's cry of "No, no no!" is the same as Amy asking "Why don't you move that horsey thing?". Perhaps that is why he was cast as a robotic voice in Whoverse?
Morris' writing does not save this one either, I am afraid.
This is set post series 5 since Amy and Rory are married. Yet in this adventure, Amy clearly has more affection for the Doctor than for Rory. In fact, she is very cold toward her husband, very being mean spirited. Nothing new is explored about the characters thus making it a bit boring.
The actual plot itself is rather horrible. Not throwing out any spoilers, but think of Will from the reboot Lost in Space movie (*crickets*) mashed up with bullying in schools. Yep. It is rather simple and bland.
What is good about this audiobook? I suppose I enjoyed Rory's part. He played the part of a hero while still being Rory. Also, if Armstrong had done the Doctor's voice better I would have liked that.
    Dullstar Academy
A story that uses some standard Doctor Who tropes: A boys academy with a military-like structure where boys run about bullying and then the monsters come. The stories twists are all telegraphed and as such fail to surprise. The story fails to build any emotional connection which is important for a story like this to work. Overall, a disappointing tale with little to recommend it.
    very very good
I read it(well actually it read to me) yet I didn't have to. It's doctor who,why wouldn't it be awesome? Then again, not my favorite doctor who tale.

    One of the best!
This has quite possibly usurped "The Forever Trap" as my favorite Doctor Who novel. The story is solid, the characters are bang on, and Camille Coduri's narration is perfect. I was completely charmed by this book within the first ten minutes. It's as if Rayner knows these characters personally. You can easily envision them acting exactly as Rayner describes.
I don't normally relisten to audiobooks, but this one is definitely going into rotation.
    Want to play a GAME?
If you could sum up Doctor Who: The Winner Takes All in three words, what would they be?
Can Rose make a good game piece for the Doctor to control? Can the Doctor get her out of the game alive? Who or what could put them in a game with real live players?
What other book might you compare Doctor Who: The Winner Takes All to and why?
The Silent Stars Go By : They are alike in you are not sure where the story is going because it keeps changing, they are read by different people and by different authors but both are worth listening too.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The best scene was when the Doctor picked up the controler and moved Rose through the maze on the game board.
    Overall entertaining story
Not bad. Enjoyable and worth a listen. Narrator paints a good picture and portrays all characters well
Solid characters and great narration, okay story.
I listen to and watch alot of Doctor Who and this one not only stays true to the series, but it is one that I think a more causual fan could get into. Jacqueline Rayner captures the esscense of the characters, especially the 9th Doctor, Rose and even the ol' Tin Dog Mickey perfectly. She also obviously did her homework when she made this one as it stays well within the continuity of the Whoniverse and even keeps up with most of the themes of series 1 of the TV show. I could have easily seen this one being made into an episode and would have loved it if they had. The story itself isn't great but it is well executed and very entertaining, though the villians in this one are a tad on the silly side. And while I was not expecting much from Camille Coduri (Jackie Tyler on the show) when I pick this one up, I was very pleasantly surprised. She did an absolutely brilliant job narrating this one and I hope they get her for some more. Well worth a listen, especially if you like the 9th Doctor and Rose. Give it a go.

As some of the others have said ...
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone with a tin ear who can't tell a decent accent from a lousy one.
Would you recommend Doctor Who: The Deviant Strain to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Anyone who's never listened to Doctor Who books before would be put off for good, and anyone who has listened before would be appalled.
How could the performance have been better?
The voices of Doctor Who characters are very, very well known to their fans. Not all narrators attempt to capture each character's voice, and fair enough. Stuart Milligan *attempts* it, but does not succeed. His accents are all over the board -- the Russians sound more like Mexicans, Rose sometimes has the same accent as the Doctor, and the Doctor, well, he sounded more like a caricature of an Englishman. Milligan's intonational patterns were likewise bizarre, as if he were reading the book for the first time aloud and didn't realize how the sentence was going to end. I don't want to be harsh, but as an aficionado of audio books and Doctor Who books in particular, it just wasn't good enough, and I will not listen to Milligan again.
I have, however, listened to several other Justin Richards books and enjoyed them very much. This time, I really didn't, but I believe that's down to the performance more than the writing, although it's difficult to separate one from the other.
What character would you cut from Doctor Who: The Deviant Strain?
    The narrator, sorry.
    Good story, TERRIBLE narrator
Would you try another book from Justin Richards and/or Stuart Milligan?
I would buy another Justin Richards book, but I would NEVER listen to Stuart Milligan ever again if he was the last audio reader on earth.
How could the performance have been better?
If someone, anyone else read it. Note to BBC Audio: NO MORE AMERICAN READERS!
    Any additional comments?
I'm about two hours into the book and I had to stop and write this review - while I'm enjoying the story, I have to say that just because Captain Jack is in the book is absolutely no excuse for having an American reader. Especially one who has hands down the WORST British and Russian accents humanly possible. The fact that he's even trying to do accents is an insult to accents everywhere.

    Tom Baker returns.
The author of these stories must be a real Tom Baker fan. For starters he took the plot line of this mini series from one of Tom Baker films, he did before he took on the role of the Doctor. The movie was Nicolas and Alexander, where he played Rasputin the the mad monk. The character Father Gregory is very much like Rasputin. Tom Baker gets to play both the Doctor and Gregory. Also some of the plot is the same. Instead of peasants vs royals in the movie, it's humans vs robots. Theirs more to story line then that, so recommend you listen to the mini series to get the whole plot line. I hope the rest of the series is good.

    Members Reviews:
    Heart this series
For no good reason, I kept skipping Holly Black, despite the fact that I'd had her recommended to me. What a loss.
The story is compelling. Even the good characters are kind of bad. No one is perfect, and even the worst people are somewhat likable. It's not precisely that you can't figure out what's going to happen before it does, but there are still so many good plot twists that you're always left wanting more. There is some angst, which is ordinarily annoying, but here is understandable and entirely tolerable. These kids have the right to whine, and despite a love story element, there is no ridiculous "OMG, I'm 16 and have known you for 3 seconds, but I'll love you forever and ever and life would be meaningless without you" junk that can make YAs unreadable.
The narration is excellent too. There's nothing in particular to single out and say, this is why this narration is great; it just is. There's nothing negative to say about the narration except perhaps that he doesn't do a lot of voices, so occasionally it can be somewhat difficult to determine who's talking. It's better though that he doesn't, because it keeps characters from sounding weird or being distracting in the story.
Can't wait for the next one.
    The Gloves are Off
From the startling murder at the beginning of the book, I couldn't stop listening to Holly Black's sequel to White Cat, and finished listening to it in two quick sittings.
The thing I was most surprised about by Red Glove is how much I enjoyed hanging out with Cassel and his pals as he drags them into his cons and tries to protect them in his own broken way. There are scenes in the book between him, Sam, Danica, and Lila that just make you feel like your part of the gang, and you hope against all the odds that everything will turn out alright for them.
Jesse Eisenberg narration is excellent. Some might say he sounds flat, but they're missing the point. He sounds exactly like Cassel should, holding all the cards tight against his chest, never giving away too much with inflection or voices.
It's more than a satisfying sequel to the first book in the series - the cons are better, it's sexier and more dangerous, and best of all the sense of community with Cassel and his friends is deeper.

    Holly Black's Next Great Trick
With White Cat, Holly Black's created a world where magic (or "working") was outlawed during prohibition. So, naturally today - business is booming for the mafia and their curse workers. Cassel's a teenage kid who doesn't fit in at the rich preppy boarding school he's been forced to attend, and he doesn't quite fit in with his family of con artists - most of who work for the mob. He doesn't have the working talents his brothers do, but he knows cons. When he finds himself about to take a walk off a rooftop in his sleep, he starts to think someone's playing him.
Black's YA books have a dark, gritty feel to them, and this one's no different. But at the same time, it's incredible fun listening as her story's long cons play out and are eventually revealed.
Jesse Eisenberg does a great job reading this - his performance is practiced nonchalance and low-key, so much so that you can't help wondering if he's just playing the odds and misdirecting your attention, making the magic feel all the more real and surprising.
Highly recommended if you like magic, gangsters, and con-artists.
A light coming of age, urban fantasy, mob book
This book held my attention for its outstanding narration, light and interesting character and fun plot. I am more of a light book fan as I often multi-task while listening and this book was perfect for me.
The reader was outstanding, I enjoyed listening to Jesse Eisenberg read this to me.
The story itself was fun to listen to, it had some elements to figure out, an interesting plot and fun characters. But it was a slightly strange mix of a young character in a fun light story that turns into a killer in a somewhat mobbish violent story. Regardless, I enjoyed it and will get the next book.
    Loved it!
What did you love best about White Cat?
Story was original and Jesse narrating had me hooked.
What was one of the most memorable moments of White Cat?
That would give too much away, so instead I will just say that I enjoyed the big reveal.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to it in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?
This is an entertaining short collection of interviews with the actors, writer and other production members of Doctor Who. It was fun listening to the actors perspectives of working on the show as well as learning about how they cast companions, such as Martha, and the news of David Tennant's departure from the show. It was quick, but full of informative tidbits that Whovians, both young and old, will treasure.
    Companions, not Assistants!
I love Sladen. No mention of her and Billie Piper in School Reunion! Otherwise cute.
