Published between 1879 and 1915, this series of books was published by the Juvenile Instructors Office for the Instruction and Encouragement of Young Latter-day Saints. It was George Q. Cannon's inspiration that produced the series, however.

In 1866, Cannon, then a member of the Quorum of the 12, began publication of a magazine for youth and young adults called The Juvenile Instructor, which he owned and published until his death in 1901, when his family sold the magazine to the LDS Church's Sunday School organization. Thus, in 1882 when the present work, Early Scenes in Church History, was published, it was a work undertaken under the direction of Cannon, with the blessing of the Church's governing leadership.

In the preface, the publisher provides that the purpose of the work is to preserve stories of faith from early Church history before they are lost, primarily for the benefit of the next generation of Latter-day Saints. The underlying premise for the work is that the rising generation of Latter-day Saints understand the legacy of faith bequeathed to them and thereby be inspired to acquire their own faith to carry on in the work of the Lord initiated by their spiritual, if not literal, forbearers.

Put another way, the premise for the work was to remember what God has done for this people, both collectively and individually. Portions of The Faith Promoting Series, including the present work, amount to almost an oral history project of people from Joseph Smith's generation. The simple narratives presented amount to the raw material of history, and preservation of these narratives saved from oblivion many personal and profound experiences of conversion and service.

Prophetically writing in one preface, Cannon observed that "men will seek with avidity" for such firsthand information "but a few years hence."

Unequalled in its explanations about God.

This book gives the explanations and answers for all the questions that any truly seeking person may have, whether it is about God, our Lord Jesus Christ, reincarnation, karma, the purpose of our lives, sin, original sin, the way to salvation etc. It is absolutely necessary that it be read with an open and unprejudiced mind. May God grant that those who are truly seeking find in this book. Amen.

Bad Religion

By sectioning a "moment" in the continuum of indivisible eternity through the mythical "Let there be Light", the author believed to be in possession of a starting point were he could initiate his descriptions of the Universe. But those who follow the grail message "knowledge" up to the end, end up facing a really disconcerting problem. Please explain to the readers: Exactly when, how and why the divine beings themselves came into existence inside a divine sphere that has forever existed? The author says it was THEIR formation that ultimately caused the sedimentation of the "residual" beings (the so-called "little clouds") inside the external edges of the divine realm, whose plea for a conscious existence was presented as the reason to the creation of the Universe. In such sequence of events, the first absent explanation is critical and essential for any TRUE answer. At this point the author deliberately and conveniently presents no explanations, offering to his readers, in fact, TOTALLY SECONDARY REASONS to the origin of Creation!

This absence of answer were solved by the author through a divine decree (a dogma): On what happens inside the heavenly sphere the human beings can not reflect nor understand, because our origin does not allow that. Any attempt would expose, according to the author, the human presumption and arrogance typical of a doomed spirit destined to disappear in the Last Judgment always just about to come ...

I just finished reading WHAT DOES SILENCE SOUND LIKE. I am smiling and bemused

This little book is full of one or two sentence statements that are worth going back and reading it again, picking out the nuggets that are in it.

The nuggets I pick out will be different from yours. But each one will be valuable to think about -.

Don't read this if you are looking for a logical explanation of silence. But, if you are wanting to have

your mind stimulated and tweaked by thoughts about silence...then try this.

Lovely short read

Even just reading this book returns me to silence. Such a quick un-burdensome read that reaches deep and speaks with simple wisdom and truth. Whatever or whomever we believe in, this applies to all of us. If we took the time to digest and integrate this in our lives, the world would be a very different place.

Silent in coordination with God

This pamphlet describes why silence is a good thing to be able to achieve. Being able to remove yourself from the ongoing babbling of the world is a life skill to be practiced. The author views this learning through the lens of a relationship with God. This can be a good thing for most people. But not all but I came away feeling put off.

Hit or miss chapters

There are a few good and creepy stories in this book. Unfortunately, they get mixed in with stories about people who lose things and then find them later on, fairies, and stories that are so ridiculous there is no way they are remotely true. I also found it pretty tasteless to bring up 9/11 by saying demons were there, etc.

The narration is decent. Some of the voices he uses can be grating though.

Overall, not as good as any of the Warren books.
