Length: 14 hrs and 22 mins

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Coming out as an atheist is a powerful, liberating act. It makes life better for you, for other atheists, and for the world. But telling people you're an atheist can be risky. What are the best ways to do it? And how can we help each other take this step?
In this compassionate, friendly, down-to-earth how-to guide, popular author of Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless and blogger Greta Christina, offers concrete strategies and guiding philosophies for coming out as an atheist. Based on hundreds of coming-out stories, the book offers a map of the territory atheists are likely to encounter and ideas on how to pick the path that's best for you.
This accessible, empathetic guide reflects a wide range of coming-out experiences. It includes dedicated chapters on:
For atheists who are already out, it gives practical ideas on how to help others join you in the sunlight. And for atheists who are on the fence, it offers guidance on making that decision - and gentle encouragement to take that step.
Inspiring and realistic, kind and powerful, Coming Out Atheist is the much-needed guidebook atheists have been waiting for.

    Absolutely Perfect
If you could sum up Coming Out Atheist in three words, what would they be?
    Informative, Inspiring, Brilliant
What did you like best about this story?
This book really lays out a great case for why we should, if we feel safe, come out atheist. It's extremely well-written, extremely well laid-out, and a very good read. And then, of course, you have this audiobook, read incredibly well by Greta Christina. She's always been great at live speaking, and hearing her read is even more of a treat.
Which character as performed by Greta Christina was your favorite?
As this is non-fiction, this doesn't really apply.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    (Same as subtitle)
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this highly, even to believers.
    Addresses Major Issues Head On
If you could sum up Coming Out Atheist in three words, what would they be?
    On point.
What other book might you compare Coming Out Atheist to and why?
Greta's book "Why are You Atheists So Angry" is definitely the right companion to this book. This book is more for atheists, though the religious can gain a lot from it too. This other book is the reverse, theists can learn a lot from it, though highly recommended for atheists too. Greta is unwilling to let any tough issue go, be it sexism in atheism or the harm done even by the most benign liberal religions.
Which character as performed by Greta Christina was your favorite?
Greta performed herself admirably, of course! Her narration is excellent, and it feels like she's talking with you the entire time. She has an excellent voice, and listening to her is very enjoyable.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Many of the stories Greta tells are very powerful, and often very funny. But the discussion of some of the real troubles in the atheist community can be hard.
    Any additional comments?
Greta is on point. She addresses atheism not just for white guys like myself, but for all people, men and women, White, Hispanic, Black, Asian, cis, trans, gay, straight, etc.

    Title: The Ebony Exodus Project

Narrator: Candace R. M. Gorham LPC
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins

    Publisher: Pitchstone Publishing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Black women are the single most religious demographic in the United States, yet they are among the poorest, least educated, and least healthy groups in the nation. Drawing on the author's own past experience as an evangelical minister and her present work as a secular counselor and researcher, The Ebony Exodus Project makes a direct connection between the church and the plight of black women. Through interviews with African American women who have left the church, the author reveals the shame and suffering often caused by the church - and the resulting happiness, freedom, and sense of purpose these women have felt upon walking away from it. This audiobook calls on other black women to honestly reflect on their relationship with religion and challenges them to consider that perhaps the answers to their problems rest not inside a church, but in themselves.

  • God Bless America Audiobook by Karen Stollznow
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
    Title: God Bless America
Subtitle: Strange and Unusual Religious Beliefs and Practices in the United States
    Author: Karen Stollznow
    Narrator: Karen Stollznow
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-05-14
    Publisher: Pitchstone Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 34 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
God Bless America lifts the veil on strange and unusual religious beliefs and practices in the modern-day United States. Do Satanists really sacrifice babies? Do exorcisms involve swearing and spinning heads? Are the Amish allowed to drive cars and use computers? Offering a close look at snake handling, new age spirituality, Santeria spells, and satanic rituals, this book offers more than mere armchair research. It takes you to an exorcism, a Charismatic church, and a Fundamentalist Mormon polygamist compound.
You will sit among the beards and bonnets in a Mennonite church, hear the sounds of silence at a Quaker meeting, and listen to L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi stories told as sermons during a Scientology service. From the Amish to Voodoo, the beliefs and practices explored in this book may be unorthodox, and often dangerous, but they are always fascinating. Some of them are dying out, while others are gaining popularity with a modern audience, but all offer insight into the past, present, and future of religion in the United States.
    Members Reviews:
    Enjoyable but kind of pointless
An interesting look at lesser known religions and religious practices in the United States. I did not have a good feeling going in because the very first chapter opens with a misquotation ("Two girls for every boy" is mis-attributed to the Beach Boys, when it is in fact a Jan and Dean lyric). Chapters include Voodoo, Fundamental Mormonism, Satanism, Quakers, Scientology, Amish/Mennonite, and New Age. My main problem is, if you are remotely literate in matters of American history, sociology, and religion, none of the content is terribly enlightening, as one already knows the bulk of it.
    Good book, terrible narration
Would you listen to God Bless America again? Why?
Probably not. I would read the book instead if I wanted to refresh my memory on details or just felt like reading it again, but I wouldn't want to go through listening to the author reading aloud again.
What other book might you compare God Bless America to and why?
There are too many books out there telling about religions to do a list of comparisons. This is a very fresh point of view since Ms. Stollznow isn't from the U.S. and didn't have knowledge about these religions before researching her book. It was all new to her. Other writers skip some things because they assume what people must already know is the same as what they already knew and they don't want to be repetitive.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Karen Stollznow?
Almost anybody. Bronson Pinchot would have been good although he mostly does fiction. She reads too fast and she pauses in the wrong places. It's as though she is reading to the end of the line with no comprehension whereupon she pauses for a moment and reads the next line, pauses, reads the next line and so on. It's very much like a woman doing a poor William Shatner impersonation. She reads better when she gets to parts she finds more interesting but even then she reads too fast. She also mispronounces words such as apostate which is very annoying. I admit there is a chance that these words are pronounced differently in Australia but I don't think so. Mispronunciations drive me crazy. I think narrators should be professional enough to check on words rather than guess.

    Broken Vessels Used By God
A book of real lessons . . . not just the side dishes, but the meat and potatoes of life as a Christian . . . the ONLY thing that could have made the listening better would have been a male narrator, since Pastor Wendell Mettey is a man, not a woman . . . this made it confusing to listen to . . . however, the content is excellent . . . the love and humility with which the stories are written is evident, God's grace obvious . . . people from every walk of life, every ethnic background came to Walnut Hills Baptist Church, each with their own set of peculiarities, their own vices, and their own invisible walls . . . undaunted by what he saw on the outside, Pastor Mettey took each as the broken vessel that we all are, created by a loving God, and loved them individually, waiting for God to reveal who He had created them to be . . . not put off by drunkenness, pride, wealth or poverty, Reverend Mettey and the congregation at Walnut Hills pushed forward, toward the goal, which Christ had put before them . . . Love your neighbor as yourself . . . the story of the lowly water carrier, the analogy which the book is based on, is one that touches me deeply, and one that I had never heard before . . . for my vessel is VERY cracked, and water regularly seeps from it . . . and how I pray that I can leave a few flowers along the path that I leave behind . . .
    MAGNIFICENT!!!!
Loved this book and the lessons learned. I hope I can inspire someone as these saints of God inspired Pastor Mettey!!
    I love this book...
I love this book so much, Its food for the soul. It has helped me through depressed times. Thank you.

Review Title: 19 Short Chapters of Long Lasting Joy! (review of Discovering Joye by Jim Stovall)
    Reviewer: Janice S. Garey
    *****5 Stars
Discovering Joye is so appropriately titled, along with its subtitle, Uncovering the Treasures Inside Ordinary People, Places, Things, and Ourselves. I just finished reading it and immediately ordered two copies to give as gifts to a family member and a friend. I want my loved ones to experience the joy, beauty and goodness in this quick read that can be cherished and reread for future doses of encouragement. Jim Stovall's brilliance in storytelling shines forth on each page. Chapter Four is about Discovering Laughter, and I thought it would be mildly amusing, but it made me laugh more than any other writing I have read in a long time.
The poetry in the book is so well encased within the chapters. As the poetry flows using condensed phrases that carry much greater meaning than the quantity of words suggest could be done, the prose is similarily condensed but super effective. I am thankful that Jim Stovall brought to light this treasure of poetry from Joye Kanelakos. He has done another great service to this needy world by putting her thoughts into the public realm.
I received this book through bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review. I consider this book to be a book of blessings. It's a good book to keep handy when you need uplifting moments to counteract the negative forces in the world that try to bring people down.
    Terrific insights into personal Gifts
Jim Stovall does a wonderful job of picturing those special gifts that are inside all of us...but often neglected or unseen. A delightful and satisfying read for the inner spirit in all of us!
    Five Stars
Great book, gives you a look into two lives who didn't even know each other.

We cant avoid the persistent questions about the meaning of lifeand the nature of reality. But science is the only means of answering them. So declares philosopher Alex Rosenberg in this bracing, surprisingly sanguine take on a world without god. The science that makes us nonbelievers, he demonstrates, tells us the nature of reality, the purpose of everything, the difference between right and wrong, how the mind works, even the direction of human history.
    Critic Reviews:
A tough test of the intellectual mettle of the armchair atheists and those teetering between faith and committing to life without it. (Boston Globe)
    Members Reviews:
The Purposeless driven life and world
In a lot of ways this book is the summation of the 100 plus science, evolution, and philosophy books I've read over the last three years. To understand our place in the universe the author asserts you must let the "physical facts fit the facts". No need to assume any items not in evidence. We don't any where else in life except in the spiritual realm and so why should we accept those premises while thinking about the universe.
To understand the universe and our place in it one most first understand the second law of thermodynamics and the author does a wonderful job in explaining it and why it is so special. He then gives a detail explanation for why evolution through natural selection can explain the world and why we exist in contrast to Kant's assertion "that there will never be an Newton for a blade of grass".
The author attacks the theory of mind by explaining how are thoughts are not real and our introspection are at most just a model we play with but gives us great evolutionary advantage. He's really getting at attacking Descarte's "cogito ergo sum", "I think therefore I am" and Descartes' homunculus or Lebnitz's monads are not facts necessary for understanding the world. He embraces 'scientism' and he convinced me not to run away from the word. He's right on consciousness but sometimes I don't says it as well as Daniel Dennett does.
He also embraces 'nice nihilism', but I would not because there is really too much preexisting baggage with the word 'nihilism'. The author also gives many statements for which I disagreed with. For example, I don't think "history is Bunk with a capital B" (that is a direct quote). The author would probably agree with Protagoras that "man is the measure of all things" and since who we are can explain why we are I'm not too quick to dismiss history. I think he's really getting at the teleology historical approach that Hegel or Toynbee would bring (he mentioned Toynbee but doesn't elaborate). He also seems to dismiss economics. I would recommend Picketty's book "Capital in the 21st Century" for why I would not reject economics so quickly as the author does. He fumbles somewhat in explaining consciousness and Dennett does a better job by describing our consciousness as the final draft of an ever changing edit that is only captured when we speak the thought or think it actively. The author is right consciousness is an illusion, but it's an illusion we accept.

Out of many, One. Marvelous synergy!!
Fun, coherent, poignant interactions all the way through. Even one gentleman who became semi-oblivious in the middle of his interaction contributed to the session by giving an example of something.
The preview caught my ear when a lady was asking about a client she works with who is/(was?) a compulsive blasphemer, so I HAD TO HEAR what Doc answered, and alas, it was generously redemptive advice. Thank God for the Q&A sessions, because some of the instructive/illustrative teachings he gives, give one serious pause; but the one on one is usually a more benign and redemptive format.
Out of all recordings available on here this stands as having been most valuable for helping answer/conclude big questions/decisions hanging in limbo within this consciousness.
    Thanks a million,
    Rich
