He saved Peyton Lockharts life when they were kids - but now shes all grown up and hes a seasoned FBI agent who comes to her rescue again in the new contemporary romance from number-one New York Times best-selling author Julie Garwood.
Peyton and her sisters have inherited Bishops Cove, a small, luxurious oceanfront resort, but it comes with conditions: The girls must run the resort for one year and show a profit - only then will they own it.
A graduate of a prestigious French culinary school, Peyton has just lost her job as a food critic after rightfully accusing her boss of sexual harassment. Out of work and in a bad place personally, to Peyton a year doing something completely different sounds wonderful. Peyton dives into learning the resort business but is quickly derailed by an escalating chain of events that puts her life in danger. She refuses to be intimidated - until shes nearly killed. Then she calls on her childhood friend and protector, Finn MacBain, now with the FBI, and asks for his help. Finn is more than happy to do a favor for Peyton, but he doesnt plan on dealing with the beautiful, passionate woman she has become.
There are countless challenges and too many people who want to stop Peyton and her sisters from succeeding. Among them are their contentious cousins and a powerful group of land developers who have been eyeing the coveted beachfront property. And it also becomes apparent that her old boss holds a serious grudge and believes in payback.
While the attraction between Peyton and Finn flames bright enough to distract them both from their dangerous situation, a happily ever after ending seems all but impossible. But the well-trained lawman never loses focus: He saved her life once; now he must do it again.

    Good story. Bad Performer
I finally finished the book but it was difficult to get past McFadden's Valley Girl voice. She sounded about 12 years old and she butchered the Minnesota accent with shades of Valley Girl. Book was another good Garwood story but get a new performer!
    What a disappointment
    What disappointed you about Hotshot?
I have read most of Garwood's books and so many are among my favorite books. Some I have reread more than once. This one is just moronic. Seriously. The lead female character did not report a serious case of harassment, a man attempting to run her off the road and who fired a gun multiple times at her car, etc. Her HR department tells her she can't file a harassment complaint until she works at the company for 3 months. Really. Would anyone above the age of 20 be that dumb? DUH. She had a tape recording of the harassment and apparently didn't think that was evidence enough. She fled the state and returned to her home in Texas. Still, she didn't report any of the above. Her reason was she couldn't afford a lawyer. So stupid that it hurts to listen to it.
How could the performance have been better?
The reader was just awful. I don't know how to describe it.
    Thoroughly Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book. The comeuppance for the bad guys was enjoyable. However, the ending was even better. The characters were well developed and likeable, even Debbie. An easy read, some action, some romance, minor sex scenes everything to keep you interested.
    Narrator was pretty good.
    Good Story, grating voice
This was generally a basic interesting story, that kept our attention while driving.

Life as a slave in the Royal House of the Nirreth isn't quite what 19-year-old Jet imagined when she grew up in the human skag pits outside Vancouver. Between bouts of babysitting a nine-year-old alien with a sometimes-dangerous crush on her, Jet spends her days training for the Rings, the televised Nirreth obsession that involves watching humans navigate perilous courses filled with both real and virtual enemies. As Jet is the first female human ever to run in the Rings, everyone fully expects her to die in the first round... or at the very least, to do so poorly that the judges, the infamous Rings Board, will kick her out even if she survives. Then again, according to Richter, the leader of the human rebels, Jet might not make it to the Rings at all.
He tells Jet that first she has to convince the Nirreth elite that she's docile enough to be trusted, or she won't make it long enough to compete. In order to do that, Jet has to become a pet of one of the Nirreth themselves, which usually involves not only sharing that Nirreth's bed, but being stung by their venom on a regular basis. When Laksri, the leader of the Nirreth rebels and Richter's military and strategic partner, offers to take that role, Jet's relationship with the Nirreth becomes more complicated than she could ever have imagined.

    If it's not broke .....
What made the experience of listening to Forged in Steele the most enjoyable?
You get familiar with characters though out the series, and start to look forward to their book.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
As I said If it's not broke don't fix it. Changing the narrator detracted from the flow of the series. The same characters with different voices ruins the experience.
    Omg ..his voice for Steele..awful
Oh my. His voices were OK until he decided to pull out a cross between Christian Bales Batman and some creepy raspy voice. I literally laughed out loud everytime he switched to the god awful voice. It is Soooo distracting to listen to a romantic scene with a voice that made it sound like a twisted scene in a horror movie. I can only imagine his poor ravaged voice after reading this novel. The story great. Everything else great....the voice distracting. Nuf said!
Very good addition to the series :D
    4-4.5 stars
This was a very good story. I loved seeing Steele actually turn away from being the "Ice Man" and showing feelings, he ends up being a very good hero. Maren makes a great match for him and I loved seeing them get together.
Steele is a team leader for KGI. KGI (Kelly Group International) is a private company that performs Ops like hostage/kidnap victim recovery & intelligence gathering among other things. Steele has always been known as the "Ice Man". He's a great leader and his team loves him (and he feels the same about them) but to see him crack a smile or show any kind of emotion is unheard of. He's disturbed to find that Maren (a doctor that helps them out occasionally) keeps going through his mind and he can't forget her.
Maren is a doctor that has a clinic in Central America. She lives in the jungle and treats villagers and at times, KGI members that have been injured on a mission that come in for treatment when they're not in the US. She has a past association with KGI from when they rescued her and some others from a hostage situation so she's always is willing to help them out. She's attracted to Steele but he's always avoided her and wouldn't speak to her.

Helper12 works as a Baby Helper in Pre Ward, the place where babies spend their first six months of life before they're tracked for vocations and sent to training. She does her job well, and she stays out of trouble. But one day, the Sloanes, Society members who enjoy all the privileges of their station - family unit clearance, a private dwelling, access to good food and good schools - come to "adopt" one of the Pre Ward babies. The Director makes a deal and the Sloanes walk out with a brand new child.
They also walk out owning Helper12 - the Director sells her to them, and there's nothing she can do but go. At the Sloanes, Helper12 enters a world where people should be able to enjoy life - with high position and riches come the opportunity for individual freedom, even the chance to love - but that's not what she finds. The Sloanes are keeping secrets. So is their biological son, Thomas.

Helper12: Great Read! Preview of a Possible Future?
This is what dystopia is supposed to read like. Dark, delicious, plausible and heart-wrenching. If you don't shiver in relief that you don't live there, then the world isn't painted properly. Oh, you'll shiver in this one. You'll definitely shiver.
Our protagonist, Helper12, is just what her name implies: a Helper. She attends to children in the Pre-Ward, another chilling designation. These babies are still too young to be classified so they are Pre- rather than designated. But when they leave her care, they will become laborers, helpers, breeders or whatever other classification is deemed appropriate for them. Helper12, who we'll come to know by her secret name of Benna, was meant to be a Breeder but for one reason or another was reclassified, her tattoo clumsily replaced, as a Helper.
Benna is sold, along with a baby, to a wealthy couple who want another baby. So she, along with the baby, are swept away into a world much like we see it, and for her it is a miracle to be in such a situation. Unfortunately, the adopted mother isn't as enamored of the baby as she was on the day she bought it and Helper12 is in the precarious position of knowing her situation will go from bad to worse if the woman disposes of them. And this is the story within the pages of Helper12. A good story it is!
I found this to be a richly detailed and intriguing world, fully realized...and chillingly so...in the story. Since this is a stand-alone book, we're unlikely to get more from this world so it is well that it was so completely realized in the story. The concept of their rigidly controlled and singular lives is well thought out and very reminiscent of THX1138 in that way, though certainly more user friendly in execution. The divided lives of those who have freedom and those who do not is also well done and reminded me of Brave New World or 1984 in many ways, yet more modern in approach.

    Another Shallow Romance
First of all, I mistakenly believed from the description of this book that it was a science fiction novel. It's not. Technically, it is a romance. There is so little knowledge of technology represented in this book that the mind link device could just as easily be a piece of alien wizardry as it could be of science.
As a romance, the novel should allow the reader to vicariously experience Ashley V falling in love with with the alien ZXQ-One/Sam. We should learn who these people are from the way they act, what they value, and the world they live in. However, there is no depth to either the characters or the story. The basic story is told so starkly as to be simplistic. It is as if the author were given an outline of a story to write and used the fewest possible words to achieve that goal. Due to a lack of foreshadowing, key plot points appear as needed out of nowhere. Need a place to escape to? Poof! Here is a child who needs rescuing and he will lead you a safe place.
In spite of the lack of detail and logic in this novel, it did hold my interest. I give partial credit to the narrator who did an excellent job, with a nod to the author who shows potential if she makes the effort to grow as a story teller.

A reimagining of the Titanic disaster set in the far future among the stars....
Traveling unexpectedly aboard the luxury liner Nebula Dream on its maiden voyage across the galaxy, Sectors Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is ready for ten relaxing days, and hoping to forget his last disastrous mission behind enemy lines. He figures he'll gamble at the casino, take in the shows, maybe even have a shipboard fling with Mara Lyrae, the beautiful but reserved businesswoman he meets.
All his plans vaporize when the ship suffers a wreck of Titanic proportions. Captain and crew abandon ship, leaving the 8000 passengers stranded without enough lifeboats and drifting unarmed in enemy territory. Aided by Mara, Nick must find a way off the doomed ship for himself and several other innocent people before deadly enemy forces reach them or the ship's malfunctioning engines finish ticking down to self destruction.
But can Nick conquer the demons from his past that tell him he'll fail these innocent people just as he failed to save his Special Forces team? Will he outpace his own doubts to win this vital race against time?
    Members Reviews:
similar to the story of Titanic
Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is aboard the Nebula Dream, a colossal spaceship on its first trip. This spaceship is one of a kind, with luxurious entertainment and full with rich passengers in their way to Sector Hub. Suddenly one night Nick is shaken awake, and after several deceptions from the captain of the ship, things go south and then it is clear that the Nebula Dream does not have all the safety measures in order. And some want to take advantage of this.
The first half of the book mirrored the ill-fated journey of the Titanic. I found this part interesting and while similar to the Titanic it was delivered in a fresh new way using a spaceship and a possible happier ending. Here we also get the characters' introductions, and we learn that Nick is a Special Forces Captain, always alert and very efficient at his job. Nick is left to rescue the 8000 passengers from the wreck; this is what Nick does, hes in the middle of everything saving the day. Another character is Mara, a businesswoman with special abilities that provide Nick with some much needed assistance in saving whats left. Nicks time frame is short and 8,000 lives depend on him and him alone!
The second part of the book is about what happens after the incident, and despite being interesting and being well written too, this is the part I least enjoyed. In my opinion, it did not seem as if the characters continued to grow. Some parts of the book appeared to be forced the romantic aspect of it specifically. I do not enjoy romance in any book that I read, so this is just my opinion while others may find it refreshing. The forced part of the romance comes from the feeling of impending danger and where would they find time and energy to even care about relationships with everything going on? Again, this is my opinion and my preferences.
Mara spent too much time trying to show how capable she was, and Nick had an arrogant attitude towards civilians in general and women in particular. This is typical given the usual expectations that we, females, face almost daily, I was hoping not to have to face it in this book. I was surprised that although this book is written by a female writer, there were too many damsels in distress moments.

Disappointed by the change of narrator.
I will never understand why the publisher changed the narrator on book seven of this successful and well-reviewed series, particularly when so many of the positive comments were directed towards the performance of the narrator for the first 6 books.
I have looked forward to PJs story for several books and as usual, the story was fantastic. Unfortunately, the new narrator didnt provide a performance of the book but rather simply read it, fast, without much emotion. I didnt care for the odd accent of Cole and the narrator failed to give justice to the intensity and emotion of PJs trauma as written by Maya Banks. I really wanted to like the new narrator, but it just didnt work for me.
Maya Banks KGI novels are some of my favorites, in part, because you become invested in the characters, their missions and camaraderie, even more so with PJ and Cole. After listening to the audiobook, I read the book and it was even better the second time around.
    Emotional ride
    Any additional comments?
Please bring back Harry. Hard to listen to because I loved Harry reading or Phil Gigante. Was not impressed with this narrator.
    The story is excelent but...
I loved the story in its written form but I was very disappointed with the reading of this book! For myself, the biggest difference between a bad narrator and a good narrator is their ability to interject emotion in the reading. The difference between a good narrator and a great narrator is someone who can make all of the voices emotional and distinctive.
What disappointed me was that this new reader seemed to have no idea who or what the established characters were about! Rio is from RIO DE JANEIRO. Hed have a Portuguese accent and if that accent was a bit much, a Spanish accent would have worked. Something distinctive! Steel one of the biggest meanest looking men on the teams had a little wimpy voice with almost no distinction from anyone else. One of the team members is from Texas. Even a bad southern accent would have been preferable. What bothered me the most is there was no distinguishing between the male and female voices.
I think that if Harry was too busy to do this book in time for the coinciding release dates I would have preferred to wait until Harry was free to read this book.

    A Superhero's "Behind the Music"
Imagine if Wolverine from the X-Men had written a tell-all autobiography á la Rob Lowe's Stories I Only Tell My Friends or _The Kid Stays in the Picture_ by Robert Evans. You'll be pretty close to the overall flavor of _Prepare to Die!_. It dishes up action, existential ruminations, feel-good nostalgia, adolescent angst, and a few genuine surprises along the way.
Prepare to Die! imagines a superhero universe from the ground-up, replete with the internecine conflicts, epic battles, and agonizing betrayals that normally unfold over the run of a comic book series. The book is written in an in-universe, autobiographical voice. Its "author" is a superhero known as Reaver -- so-called because he can take a year off a person's life with each of his punches. Reaver is writing for an audience that already reads about superheroes in tabloids and watches them on TMZ. Superheroes are are as much a target of the paparazzi as they are of supervillains. The in-universe audience already knows the characters. They know their stories, but they don't know the _whole_ story.
The story starts off with our hero, Reaver, facing down his arch-nemesis Octagon. Reaver is losing badly. He's cornered, out of options, and has literally no fight left in him. As Octagon prepares to administer the coup de grâce, he delivers the bad guy boilerplate: "Prepare to Die!" Reaver ponders this and responds: "Ok. How long do I have to prepare?" Surprisingly, Octagon agrees to give him some time to prepare to die. This sets off an existential journey through Reaver's past. He examines the genesis of his superhero powers and persona. He takes a trip back to his childhood hometown to see the love he lost when he took up the superhero-ing life.
I'm not a comic book afficionado by any means.

    Marvelous science fiction romance
If you like science fiction romance AT ALL, get Blue Galaxy now. I'll wait for you to catch up to me. It is just SO worth it. Don't believe me? Take a look at my review of the first book in Diane Dooley's Blue Universe for the first chapter of Javan and Sola's story.
(And it's impossible to review book two without spoiling book one at least a little. I want you to discover this world for yourself. Much more fun that way.)
At the end of Blue Galaxy, Javan and Sola have more of a "Happy-For-Now" than a "Happy-Ever-After". Not because they aren't crazy in love with each other, but because the entire universe really is out to get them.
Sola is determined that the only way she and Javan can have their happiness forever is if she goes home and gets rid of the enemy who is dogging their every step. There are only a few problems with her plan.
    1) Their enemy is the all-powerful Dictator of Earth.
    2) He's Sola's daddy.
    3) Sola is pregnant.
    4) Daddy dearest inserted some really messed-up bio-engineered programming into Sola that is messing up her pregnancy and her emotional balance.
And then there's the really big problem--her daddy the dictator planned all of this (except Sola's pregnancy) because he wanted Sola to take over from him. He's dying. He wants her to be the next dictator.
Sola only knows what she wants when she turns off all her enhancements. But without her enhancements, she's not sure she can survive everything that's being thrown at her. Especially after her programming makes her give Javan up. But it can't make her forget him.
No matter how many times she puts her memories of him into data storage. Love is stronger than programming. Love can conquer everything.
Escape Rating B+: Blue Nebula was every bit as good as Blue Galaxy. I loved finding out more about Sola and her world. In the first story, she's such an enigma. Here we find out what happened to her. But then, so does she!
There's also a lot of heartbreak. Not just for Sola and Javan, but also for Destin Grady, who loved Sola and lost her twice. I kind of hope there will be a sequel where he finally gets another chance at happiness with someone else. He's finally earned one.
I do still wish we knew a bit more about Daddy Dearest's motivations for totally warping all of his children. He was just plain way out there.
