An anti union story by Heinlein
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not this story, the only sci fi in it was the fact the US banned cars and installed people movers. Mostly it was a story of union busting by portraying the union members as fanatics who would destroy what they couldn't control.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Swan Song by Robert McCammon.
Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrator?
This was not a narration but theatrical production for a 1950's radio play. I would definitely listen to another story from this show.
Could you see X Minus One being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I would hope this one would never be made into a movie. Disappointing. I could see Mel Gibson play the Union buster, the head of the Engineers Union played by Christopher Walken, the visitor from another nation could be played by Keanu Reeves. The Union buster's wife could be played by anyone. Small part. Bad storyline, boring movie.
    Any additional comments?
"Nothing to see here, move along."
    As Advertized!!!
It seems Audible has fixed the problem and all is well again. The X Minus One series is great and a steal at the price. Thanks, Audible!!
    Classic Heinlein
This short story predicted urban sprawl, and our dependence on the technology that makes it possible. This radio production is very faithful to the original source material, and very well done.

    Great yarn.
Good fun. Not too much of the creepy Twilight Zone feeling to it, but a very enjoyable story with a great ending. Recommended.
    Good little story
Good main character played really well. This one is more comedic than spooky. But it is fun and lighthearted that makes it easy to listen to and follow.
    Enjoyed it.

Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding knows Green Town, Illinois, is as vast and deep as the whole world that lies beyond. It is a pair of new tennis shoes, the first harvest of dandelions for Grandfather's renowned intoxicant, the distant clang of the trolley bell on a hazy afternoon. But as young Douglas is about to discover, summer can be more than the repetition of established rituals that hold time at bay. It can be a best friend moving away, a human time machine who can transport you back to the Civil War, or a sideshow automaton able to glimpse the bittersweet future.

    Time capsule..
Dandelion Wine is one of those nostalgic stories that attempt to summon a true memory of childhood. Ray Bradbury is one of few authors with the magic to pull it off. This production is a full cast reading with music and sound effects. A production like this can come to grief in any number of ways, but this one works well. The boy playing the role of 12 year old Douglas Spalding is just right. It's not a replacement for reading the book, but if you can enter into the spirit of the story, I think you will love this recording. Green light.
    Adapted by Ray Bradbury hisself
The script for this audio drama was written by Ray Bradbury hisself. After hearing this production of his script by The Colonial Radio Theater, Ray sent them an email saying, "Dear Jerry, I've just played for the second time your production of Dandelion Wine and its fabulous. I'm so very proud of it, in fact it made me weep. In your own way you've told me that I have a chance of part of me living beyond the day that I leave this Earth. This production is simply incredible. I can hardly wait to see what you do with Something Wicked This Way Comes. I know it will be fantastic. Please thank everyone involved and let them know that they moved Ray Bradbury to believe in himself. God bless and happy new year, Ray."
    Drink Up
This is a lavish production that will bring Bradbury's pleasantly nostalgic (if occasionally too sentimental) mix of reminiscence and imagination to your mind's eye.
    this rocked..

Music is very annoying and distracting
The music used for each episode is simply awful - loud, shrieking and annoying. This would be a great production if the music were edited out.
    Needs editing
This was clearly a serial, which is not the issue. The problem is that the producers left in all the lead in and credits for each installment, which becomes extremely annoying by the end of the recording.
The sounds effects were also a over the top for my taste.
I've heard other recordings of this story that I enjoyed more.
    Fantastic
I first listened to this dramatised version of The War Of The Worlds when I was a young lad, my dad recorded it on a very old spool tape recorder. I kept it for years, listening to it when I was aloud to, until the tape recorder broke. To listen to it again just brings back memories. Its the best version available. Thanks Audible, I'm now going to wear my ipod out.
    An excellent listen
This is a muscular and violent production as radio dramas go and its all the scarier and more vivid for it. The production values are strong and the cast is excellent. I'd give it 4.5 if I could, the only downsides being the slightly melodramatic opening titles and the outdated female character. That said, its still a treat.
    A BBC Classic
I first read the book when I was about 12 and had the attention span of a bored chimp. But the book gripped me in a way that got me told off many times for reading in bed when I should have been sleeping. This audio rendition from the BBC managed to do exactly the same. I switched on my ipod and didn't switch it off until I had listened to all 6 episodes. The actors were excellent in their reading of the script and although not the original time setting the play relayed the fear and excitement that I felt when I originally read the book. The only criticism I have is of the rather over melodramatic title sequences that I felt could have been edited out, this aside I would recommend that any fan of H.C.Wells or indeed War of the Worlds in its many different forms download this without hesitation, they will not be dissapointed.

Adapted by Barbara Clegg in 1982, The Chrysalids concerns the community of Waknut, where it is believed that mutants are the products of the Devil and must be stamped out. When 10-year-old David befriends a girl with a slight abnormality, he begins to understand the nature of fear and oppression. Then, when he develops his own deviation, he must learn to conceal his secret.
Survival is based on a short story and was produced for a 1990's Fear on Four revival. Set in the future, it concerns the first auto-piloted space flight. When the ship meets with an accident, the human passengers are cast adrift in space. What will they do when their food supplies run out?
    Members Reviews:
    Captured the book very well.
The Chrysalids is a great book and this dramatisation is excellent. Very true to the book. I recommend it. Survival is a short story at the end...I was never overly fond of the original story but putting that aside the dramatisation is very good.
    Disappointing
The Chrysalids is no doubt a good story but the performance was quite mediocre and affected my ability to enjoy it. The recording was also very quiet and made listening to details very hard at times. the second story; 'Survival' was just silly and not worth the bother!
    Waste of money
What would have made The Chrysalids & Survival better?
There is not enough story to justife price.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Story itself is not bad but less than 2 hours for this price is not worth of money.
What character would you cut from The Chrysalids & Survival?
    Survival.
    Any additional comments?
Keep away from this unless you get this free or really like a nostalgia.
    Such classics!
John Wyndham is a master of the uncanny and these vintage recordings capture the period of broadcast as well as the fear in both stories. Great stuff.

This is a dynamic, modern dramatisation of a classic book by John Wyndham. Bill Nighy (Love Actually and many other films) and Sarah Parish (Cutting It) play Richard and Janet, a couple caught up in the goings-on of a sleepy English village in which all the children have golden eyes, blond hair, and a sinister talent for telepathy and telekinesis. (Wyndham's novel was filmed as Village of the Damned in 1960 and 1995.)

Quite good - except for the screaming
I hadn't read any John Wyndham books since I was a kid, but lately I've been really into BBC radio serials, so I thought I'd give this a try (and heck, who can resist Bill Nighy? I always love his performances).
Overall, this is a great production, and fairly recent, so some of the more dated aspects (the whole stereotypical '1950s housewives' attitude was one of the reasons I hadn't loved the book whn I read it years ago, for example) have been toned down or confined to a general 'women are more attached to their children than men' approach.
    However.
I don't recommend listening to this while lying on the couch trying to relax on a Sunday afternoon, because every 5 minutes some female character lets out the kind of ear-piercing, sustained shriek that has you jumping out of your chair and lunging for the EQ because you feel like your eardrums are about to perforate themselves. (The Chysalids dramatization has the same problem.)
So: definitely buy this, but it's best to listen to while, say, cleaning the house.
    Very creepy!.
Saw the movie when I was a child. This acting was great and and the sound effects were also for a radio book play.
    Survival of the species
Good story with descent cast. The actor playing the professor is spot on. There are often times the dialog has a definite improv feel to it. Bill Nighy doesn't lend the needed gravitas to a situation were aliens have invaded with superior powers and about to go off to propagate their species... putting at risk the future of humanity. Personally I enjoyed the 1960s movie better but this is still an enjoyable audiobook.
    First rate
Very well done. Bill Nighy is his usual delightful self, and Clive Merrison also contributes a solid performance. This is, in many ways, one of Wyndham's more horrifying stories. As a longtime fan of Wyndham's work, I'm happy to say that the spirit of his novel comes through loud and clear. If you appreciate good, intelligent radio drama, this is for you.
    Loved It
I am great fan of the original book and I very much enjoyed this interpretion. It did maybe over simplify the story a little too much in parts, but that did not distract from the overall enjoyment.

The front-page headline in the October 31, 1938, New York Times told the whole story: "Radio Listeners in Panic, Taking War Drama as Fact/Many Flee Homes to Escape 'Gas Raid From Mars'/Phone Calls Swamp Police at Broadcast of Wells Fantasy".
    Members Reviews:
    Classic
If you are old enough to remember the radio serials, and the shorts at the Saturday Afternoon pictures, and you like classic SciFi, you could enjoy this. Orson Wells no less. Having seen both movies over the years, based on this story, it was good to hear the original radio play that had listeners thinking the Martians had indeed landed (or so the other story goes). Classic or otherwise I suggest spending the few dollars asked rather than use your credit here.It is a good listen for the hour and certainly worth $5.00.
"That was no Martian, it's Halloween"
It's a masterful radio dramatization dating back to 1938. The radio play allegedly "stirred terror through the U.S." and "terrified the nation". The broadcast started with the introduction by Orson Welles: "We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century this world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own." The broadcast went on followed by a weather report and interviews that were meant to make the dramatization sound realistic. Then there was a special news bulletin announcing that an object about 30 yards wide had fallen on a farm at Grovers Mill.
What the news reporter saw next he described as "the most terrifying thing" he had ever witnessed...
I was hooked by this true-to-life radio adaptation. The way the Martian invasion and its aftermath were reported, and the enactment of one of the few survivors were brilliant.
    A Clever and Entertaining Dramatization
What a remarkable radio dramatization of H. G. Wells??? classic novel The War of the Worlds Orson Welles and company made! They effectively distilled the essential elements from the novel into an American context, producing a concise 59-minute program that made me feel that I was listening to an intense night of terror followed by days of existential wandering and wondering.
After a voice proclaims that we are listening to a Mercury Theater presentation of The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells, Orson Welles intones a condensed version of the brilliant opening of the novel, and then quickly sets up the conceit of the first part of the broadcast, that we are listening to a radio program of innocuous dance music that is repeatedly interrupted by eye-witness news flashes from this New Jersey farm where a strange meteor has landed. From there Welles and company use a variety of voices (newsmen, astronomers, farmers, crowds, military men, etc.) and sound effects to create the illusion that the attack of the Martians, complete with heat rays, giant mobile tripods, and poison gas, is happening in real time as we listen to the radio.
After an ???intermission,??? the second part of the dramatization changes from the ersatz radio broadcast to the first person narration by Welles of his professor character???s journal, depicting his attempts to survive and make sense of the invasion.

    awesome
As a teacher I am always looking for something interesting to do with the novels that we read in class. Many of my students have difficulty with Brave New World, so as a treat we listened to this version of BNW in class. The students loved it, some even admitted that listening to the novel helped them to understand the novel and now are actually reading it (and liking it).
    Too little, too late
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is such a large abridgement that it didnt even begin to tell the story. I was very dissapointed.
What was most disappointing about Aldous Huxley and CBS Radio Workshop s story?
It was just too short. I did not communicate the idea and meaning of the full book.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    no comment
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Dissappointment. I loved reading this book many years ago - but this version just left me cold.
    Any additional comments?
    Skip this one.
Helpful refresher / delightful period piece
This one hour production doesn't cover every detail of the book, but it "hits the highlights" and serves as a great refresher (especially for someone who has read the book long ago).
It's a rather enjoyable if highly styled audio experience, with all the drama, sound effects, and melodramatic acting style of the time at which it was originally recorded. Gives a bit of Huxley's perspective, too, as he speaks at the intro to each 30-minute segment.
To students hoping to listen to this one-hour broadcast instead of reading (or listening to) the full novel: this will NOT suffice as a full replacement for the novel if your goal is to pass a detailed test on the novel. It's a great book and you'll be missing out if you rely solely on this broadcast. On the other hand, if you are truly not a reader or you are simply terribly pressed for time, you could do worse than to combine this one-hour broadcast with a decent study guide.
This is only the first half of the story.
What would have made Brave New World (Dramatized) better?
This only contains part 1 of the story. It should have made that clear before I purchased it. It's a radio broadcast that takes an intermission half way through the story, but this recording does not contain the second half.
    A great performance
I had to read this book for my degree (like so many others) and this dramatised version definitely help in producing a visual reference in my mind. Some of the sound effects and music are a little strange and dated, but if you haven't read Brave New World you should really check out this version.

Well Worth It Despite A Slow Start...
    Any additional comments?
I've been a fan of old radio shows for many years now but this is the first series I have encountered that is structured in a serial format in which each episode plays off of the previous one's ending.
What results, is one long, 7-hour radio play. This may sound unappealing to those who lack an imagination, but - for those lucky enough to be endowed with a healthy one - it is pure gold.
I am a huge fan of the 50's radio program "X-Minus One", but each half hour episode can only pack in so much detail. Journey Into Space has the luxury of time which allows it to go into brilliant sci-fi detail as I've never heard before. The first two episodes are a little slow and boring considering that human beings have since already landed on the lunar surface, so it's hard to peak your interest. But trust me, if you stay with it...It gets INSANE.....
    9.4 / 10
    A classic sci-fi radio serial!
If you love sci-fi or classic radio dramas, you owe it to yourself to listen to Journey Into Space.

The series was good and it let you see how the average person view space in the 50's. It reminded me of movie from the 50's.
    outdated but good
It's outdated in some of it's contents but it is still good to sit back and listen to, I have listened to all of the radio broadcast on my MP3, Luna. Red planet and in peril, although they got some thing incorrect IE TV Signals had not reached mars!! and the radio needed a huge amount of power to reach earth, when Voyager signals come to earth even now and only have the strength of a torch bulb. What I say is to forget what we know now and just enjoy it, It would may a good movie, If I had the money I would make it( up dated of course).
    Journey into space
A top decision to carry this story. Wonderfully done and evocative of a byegone era when science fiction stories were free of todays overpowering special effects. I hope the ''Red Planet'' and ''World in Peril'' are introduced soon.
