Short story really

The story takes up less than half of the audio book. Rest is filler with interviews with actors/directors and ads for other Blake's 7 audiobooks. Disappointing.

High Quality & Enjoyable

Being the ripe old age that I am and having recently embarked upon a re-watching of the entire Blake's 7 TV series on DVD, I was intrigued to find several Blake's 7 full cast audio stories recently produced. The format of these newer releases such as Warship and the other full cast audio episodes like Fractures 1.1 and Battlefield 1.2 etc are essentially TV episodes in purely audio form. In other words, of a quality and length to be effectively new TV episodes the fans always wanted to see.

Warship was my first foray into this new format since a release many years ago which I cannot remember what it was called and it was indeed pleasing to find all the regular cast in attendance here. Warship is a story that bridges the gap between TV seasons 2 and 3 and tells us the events that led to the defeat of the alien fleet seen at the finale of season 2. The story is satisfying and in the spirit of the episodes we've come to love on the TV series albeit it on a rather grander scale as something in audio format can do relatively cheaply. It begs the question just how good a new Blake's 7 TV series could be with the sorts of special effects possible now. Of course, the key strengths of shows like Blake's 7 that were subject to the tiny budgets of the BBC back then were the stories themselves and the strongly defined characters. Many things on TV and indeed in the cinema today depend rather less on good stories and interesting characters and more on eye candy in the form of dazzling special effects and explosions.

As this was the first Blake's 7 full cast audio I'd heard in many years what did surprise me was how the age of some actors had affected their voices. Hardly recognizable is Gareth Thomas as Blake who unfortunately due to no fault of his own sounds rather more like a granddad with age having robbed his vocal chords of the deeper tones. There are occasional remembrances of his voice as we knew it but the years have perhaps been the most unkind to him. Paul Darrow too although still very recognizable as Avon has also had the years alter his voice and I think as can happen with people of a certain age, it sounds like his palette has softened or he's got badly fixed false teeth as he has difficulty pronouncing the "S" sound. Jacqueline Pearce has done rather better in this respect but even so her Servalan isn't quite the clipped arrogant delivery it once was. Those that come out best are the actors playing Villa, Jenna and Cally with perhaps Jan Chapel's Cally being just about indistinguishable from her performances of over 30 years ago with Michael Keating's Villa also up there.

a little unsatisfying

This book builds upon Day of the Triffids well but takes a more human oriented approach while the first book was more oriented toward the overall situation in the world and the growing trouble with Triffids. I found this book ended surprisingly soon and was a little unsatisfying in that way. It does progress through the story of Triffids however

I so wanted this to be great...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

To those who are still wary of meteor showers I could not recommend this story because this is all it is, a story and not a great one.

What will your next listen be?

Probably a better alternate history book.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The father and son conversation about the human races future if when machinery Etc can no longer be maintained.

Was The Night of the Triffids worth the listening time?

As a story yes, as a relivant sequel, no. But lovers of the original would be tempted by its title.

Any additional comments?

Just too many fortunate events for our lead character to survive!

A poor spin off. Now I've listened to it, it would be difficult not to imagine any other evolution pathway. I'll just stick with the original.

I enjoyed this sequence to the day of the triffids, been waiting a long time to read it. hope there will be a 3rd.

Great story

This audio book was performed by many of the television series actors. This gave the story so much authenticity. It took me back to my childhood watching Blake's 7 on Chicago PBS channel 11.

Not as good as previous entries

Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by the narrators?

Only if it was a full cast audio.

How could the performance have been better?

There is a lead actor narrating, with another actor occasionally appearing.

Would be a far better listen with a full cast. Just comes across as quite a cheap production.

A good and unusually long episode. A story that contains a lot more than the average TZ episode. Good sound effects (as usual) and competent voice acting.

YAY for Twilight Zone!

Beewinjapeedee is a Twilight Zone story about a man who goes into the wilderness to get answers about what happened to his brother 17 years earlier. He finds what he was looking for and more than he bargained for.

The edition I listened to was narrated by a cast with sound effects and everything, and probably came straight from the radio show in the 1960s. It was a quick, easy, and fun listen and I listened to it as a preview to see if I should buy one of the books available with several episodes in it.

I wasn't really surprised by any of the "twists" but I did fully enjoy the experience. I am thinking this is a great introductory to try to get my son to listen to because he loves this kind of stuff (Twilight zone/sci fi/fantasy) but isn't into reading because its hard for him to keep focused. With sound effects, different voices for each character, and an interesting story, it doesn't get any easier to listen than this.

Did I mention the sound effects were awesome?

well acted and decent story

all round good but didn't have me gripped like some of these do. predictable ending, even though the actual twist wasn't quite what I thought was coming. the acting is very good.

This episode packed quite a punch when it was aired in 1961. The Cold War was very real and the threat of "The Bomb" was very much in peoples minds.

Adapted to radio/audio it still works very well. A great episode!

Best Adaptation!

If you could sum up The War of the Worlds in three words, what would they be?

High caliber adaptation!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The War of the Worlds?

One of the most memorable moments in CRT's adaptation of of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds is the initial landing of the Martian cylinder. The peripheral comings and goings of all strata in British society coming to have a look. And then, getting to see something.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene in this CRT production is hearing the heat ray and seeing it my imagination. The fight between the Martian war machine and HMS Thunderchild was excellent too!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment that captured my emotions was the chat between Pearson and the soldier of Artillery. Listening and understanding the hopelessness of the soldier's point of view, his reality and plans for the future, and knowing they'll really come to nothing.

Wells's writing and intent shine through CRT's production. I've never heard a better example of the famous author's work before.

Better than the movie.

What did you love best about The War of the Worlds (Dramatized)?

Best version of the story.

Not a big fan of War of the Worlds but was running out of stuff from The Colonial Radio Players so got it not expecting much. I was surprised by how good it really is.
