    Untertitel: Ein Wahnsinnsroman
    Autor:: Jan-Uwe Fitz
    Erzähler: Jan-Uwe Fitz
    Format: Unabridged
Spieldauer: 5 hrs and 26 mins
    Sprache: Deutsch
    Veröffentlichungsdatum: 03-27-14

    Kategorien: Fiction, Humor

When a severed arm is discovered by a honeymooning couple in the Florida Keys, former police detective - now reluctant restaurant inspector - Andrew Yancy senses that something doesn't add up.
Andrew's search for the truth takes him to the Bahamas, where a local man, with the help of a very bad monkey is doing everything in his power to prevent a developer from building a new tourist resort on the island, with deadly consequences....
    Critic Reviews:
"The funniest crime novelist to put pen to paper" (Evening Standard)
"Hiaasen amplifies the grotesque aspects of everyday criminality in order to cut to the heart of human nature" (Irish Times)
    Members Reviews:
What a shame about the reader
The story seems to be up to Hiaasen's usual standard, but it is ruined by the really bad narration. Hiassen has had some great readers, why suddenly this guy? The reading is jerky, sing-song and the emphasis is often wrong. What a pity.
hated the reader and the performance
Would you try another book written by Carl Hiaasen or narrated by Lance Fuller?
I so hated the reader and his performance which is stilted and without emotion in the first chapter I simply couldn't get any further than the first 10 minutes. I tried more than once thinking it might be my mood but I couldn't do it! Try listening before you buy. Shame as I usually like Carl Hiaasen for his mad humour.
Would you ever listen to anything by Carl Hiaasen again?
Maybe if by a different reader or I'll download to my Kindle and try on that.
Would you be willing to try another one of Lance Fullers performances?
    NO
    Ruined by Narration
I love Hiaasen, his books are great, but listening to this (rather than reading it) is unspeakably bad. Men, women, old, young, every line is read in exactly the same deadpan voice. Given Hiaasen's novels are all about conversation, this makes the book almost impossible to follow. The stupid thing is his other novels have great narrators. Buy the physical book instead, as its almost certainly excellent when read any way other than by this narrator.
And if you really need it read to you, get Stephen Hawking to do it as he would do a better job.
I'd give it no stars if I could.
    Narrator Not Great
If you could sum up Bad Monkey in three words, what would they be?
    Bring Back Skink
What was one of the most memorable moments of Bad Monkey?
    Hurricane Love Scene
What three words best describe Lance Fullers voice?
    Not Very Good
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Lance Fullers narration almost put me off - but it takes a heck of a lot before I give up on a book and eventually I got used to it and was laughing inappropriately as I usually do with a Carl Hiaasen book.
Fair to middlin' - not really for me
My sense of humour is less slapstick and a trifle more subtle and I really wasn't particularly amused by this tale, the story was OKish, I managed to guess the overall plot before I was half way through.
I wouldn't trouble to search out another book by this author.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the depths of the Sixties and The Days Of Rage, a young newsman, accompanied by his pregnant wife and orphaned teenage brother, creates a paradise of sorts in a sprawling Venice Beach community of apartments, populated by students, artists, budding scientists and engineers, lifeguards, poets, and bikers with a few junkies thrown in for good measure. The inhabitants come to call the place "Pepperland", after the Beatles movie, Yellow Submarine. Threatening this paradise is 'The Blue Meanie', a crazy giant of a man so frightening that he eventually even scares himself.

    Wish I Was There
Fun little read about a time I really pine for.( I was born too late) For years now, I've had an interest in Venice Beach and Laurel Canyon and how wonderful of places they must've been before the money men came in and made ran up the costs of living in these paradises. We've had the same problem here on the East Coast.
Tales of Venice California in the 1970s
Finished "Tales of the Blue Meanie" over the weekend, which recounts part of Allan Cole's time as an Apartment Complex Manager and News Reporter in Venice, CA. The stories Allan tells about himself, his friends and his tenants during that time are guaranteed to amuse - sometimes too much, as I must have seemed like a madman sitting on the Commuter Train laughing my head off. It really feels like it captures the general time and the specific place.
As a Generation X'er from the Midwest, I read it with a mix of amazement at the antics (The Mad Bomber and the Mrs., Upstairs Junkie and Downstairs Junkie, How to Remove the Floor of an Apartment), admiration at the Chutzpah (Allan and his friends are a confident yet cagey crew), and I'll confess, a mild sense of being appalled at some of the excesses of the early 70s. (I'm a kind of uptight guy).
All that said, the impression that I leave the book with, and what will stay with me, is the sense of Freedom the book has. There are indications throughout the book that the author was working his ass off as a reporter, a husband, a father and in keeping the "Pepperland" Apartment Complex running, but I had the feeling throughout that he and those around him were doing exactly what they wanted to do, any time they wanted. That's something to celebrate.
Great book by one of my favorite authors, and it leaves me wondering exactly what happened between Lucky in Cyprus and Tales of the Blue Meanie... Hopefully a Midquel will come out soon to tie some of the loose ends together.
More than just a bit of nostalgia
Man, this really DOES take me back. Imagine Steinbeck and his cast of characters, moved to the California Venice Canals in the late 60s; add in a touch of Kerouac and maybe just a bit of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and you have a taste of "Tales of the Blue Meanie." This is a great read and a lot of fun, and encapsulates a slice of life and a slice of time in the late 60s and early 70s that I mostly have cut off and left behind. Now, I may be just a bit biased because I am one of the cast of colorful characters depicted in the story, but I think it's very well written and a page turner none-the-less. Kudos to Allan for capturing the tastes, smells, and rollicking insanities and inanities of the period.

    Great book
I am definitely going to look for the next in this series. I just can't resist after reading this one. A terrific read - hot hero, gorgeous heroine, lust, fun, and quite funny. Just what I enjoy reading.
    Colorful Romance
This romance is very well written and easy to read. The characters are so colorful.
I will definitely read all of her books!
    A fun, fast read
I really enjoyed Rose, but it went way too fast! Ms. Terry is a talented author who knows how it suck you into her world and keep you there. I want to know more about this family and the people around them. Can't wait for more!
    Fun read
Rose is a sweet girl swimming in a tank of sharks--or so it seeems. But the sharks are not as hard as they seem and Rose is not as naive as she appears. This is a fun, fast paced read with Bobbye Terry's typical humor brightening the mystery. The first of a series, readers won't be able to resist the other two.

From the cover I thought this was going to be a corny cozy, but it was actually quite good, that is if you like undercover cozy's. It delivered a good story with excitement and mystery. The very ending was a little far fetched, but I can see where the author is going with the next book.

    Members Reviews:
    That was pathetic.
This was not really a short story. It was a long tirade: one man whining and complaining about another's success. Pitiful excuse for a short story.
Then (just in case that was not bad enough) we are subjected to the rantings about what the author ASSUMES will happen to the highly successful man in the very near future. A type of "how the mighty will fall".
There is NOTHING in here to recommend for you to read. Why would anyone want to read some grown man's whinings about someone else who was more successful than him? Do yourself a big favor and skip this one. You will be grateful you did. Trust me on that one.
(And from the description, I have no idea why the other reviewer thought this would teach you how to take better pictures. There is NOTHING whatsoever to even remotely suggest that is the subject of this book. I fully EXPECTED it to be a short story.)
    Not For Me
I was very disapointed in this book. Not at all what I thought it would be like.
It doesn't teach you any thing about how to take better pictures. It was really a story book. Good read if you are into stories.

  • The Family - A Novel (Movie Tie-In), previously published as Malavita Audiobook by Tonino Benacquista

Title: The Family - A Novel (Movie Tie-In), previously published as Malavita

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-20-13
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
The internationally best-selling novel originally published as Malavita, now a major motion picture: The Family starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones, directed by Luc Besson and produced by Martin Scorsese.
The Blakes are newcomers to a small town in Normandy. Fred is a historian researching the Allied landings, Maggie enjoys charity work, and their kids are looking forward to meeting other teenagers at the local lycee. Or so it seems.
In fact, Fred is really Giovanni Manzoni, an ex-goodfella turned stool pigeon who's been relocated from New Jersey to France by the FBI's witness protection program. He's got a two-million-dollar bounty on his head, but he and his family can't help attracting attention (imagine the Sopranos in Normandy). And when imprisoned mobster Don Mimino gets wind of their location, it's Mafia mayhem à la Josh Bazell's Beat the Reaper - or like The Godfather as if written by Carl Hiaasen. Because while you can take the man out of the Mafia, you can't take the Mafia out of the man.
    Critic Reviews:
"Think Goodfellas family style with a Gallic flair. Ballerini's French pronunciation is fine enough, and he nails the American and Italian-American accents and attitude. The teenagers are believably bored-superior-affecting. His Fred, an unapologetic killer discovering himself while writing his memoirs, is a study in shifting characterization. And the straight-ahead narrative is clear and well-paced. Good, bloody fun, including the delightful melodies used to change scenes." (AudioFile)
"This action-comedy book is all good fun throughout. . . . There are some very funny moments." (Newsday)
"Hilarious . . . Snappy writing and brisk pacing add up to a comic crime novel Elmore Leonard fans would relish." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
A genuine laugh riot. Balerini is a master.
Clearly I had never heard of Tonino Benacquista before. I have, however, become something of a student of Edoardo Balerini. I would be the president of his fan club, were he to have one. The man has engaged and entertained me in a way which beggars description. This book is the story of an Italian gangster and his family, who go into the Witness Protection Program (WITSEC) after he testifies against his former colleagues. The family ends up in a small town in Normandy, the name of which I swear to you sounds something like Schlong-sur-Mer. The gangster takes the name of Fred Baker, and tries to convince an entire town bristling with French gossips that he is a writer, engaged in some magnum opus mysterioso. His wife and chldren are dragged most unhappily into this fiasco. It is torture for them to keep the lie going, but of course it is essential that they pull it off, as unspeakable deaths await them if they fail. Mr. Baker's real name is Giovanni Menzano, I believe. The wife and kids have to invent names and full identities for themselves. They have one so-called friend, who is their supervisor in the WITSEC program, a man named Tom Quintiliani. (Please forgive me if I am messing up these names: it is very hard to memorize names when you are laughing out loud at the story, and at the exquisite predicament this family is in.)
Edoardo Balerini has now reached a pinnacle (in my mind) which no other living narrator has ever come close to.

Was tun?

Great entertainment!! Wonderful and witty story
This is the perfect book when you feel a little bit sad, it instanly lightens your mood, cause what could be worse than being reborn as a six legged insect with a gigantic butt?! It is so funny to follow the main charcter from one episode to the other and furthermore who doesn't love a happy ending that leaves you thinking how good life can be when you begin to start seeing things from a different angle (in this case an ant, a guinea pig and many more, not to forget the lovely chubby one!!) I guess this gave the creators from drop dead diva the idea for their show :-)
Great book, I read it several times all over again and it never grows old on me. Treat yourself with this wonderful and humorous piece of entertainment - it's like chocolate for your soul!!
    Mmmhhh
