Through world wars and civil strife, the Bangor Express has never missed an issue, but now it is losing money, and Rob Cullen has absolutely no idea that he's the man to save it.
It's been a long time since Rob had a real story to get his teeth into...just as well then that he can rely on the Express crew to back him up. They're like a family. A dysfunctional, highly unpopular and poverty-stricken family.
    Critic Reviews:
"He just seems to get better and better." (Ian Rankin)
"Genuinely hilarious...exciting, exhilarating, a whirlwind of invention. The perfect summer read." (Benedict Cumberbatch on The Mystery Man)
"Comic thrillers that are actually comic and thrilling." (Daily Telegraph)

    Hmmm. . . A Story that Isn't?
I love a good story about journalists crusading to right wrongs and editors that break the rules to publish the real news of the day. In part, that is what kept me going with this one, but in the end, I failed to find much to hold up as praise worthy -- although it did have a couple of crusading journalists.
This entire book is somewhat of a series of vignettes -- a newspaper dying on the vine, reporters tracking down information on an event, then switching to the business side of the newspaper world, then back to another reporter on the trail of something juicy and so forth. Sometimes a bit confusing, sometimes quite interesting, sometimes, pretty dull. But I did complete the book -- and have no hard feelings about having spent my credit on it. This one isn't a big winner for me -- and won't be something I listen to again.
    confused
There's a lot going on in this book, but no real plot. Nothing to sink your teeth into. I find it a bit confusing because it keeps switching back and forth from one character to another with no sensible reason. Also, the narrator, while decent, has no discernible change in voice or cadence between characters, which may contribute to my confusion. Give it a pass. I'm planning on sticking through because I've gotten more than half way, but I know I should stop wasting my time as I would bet it won't get any better at this point.
    Bitty
You didn't really feel like you were listening to a single book, it was almost as if there were lots of ideas merging, not into short stories exactly, but a disjointed tale, if that makes sense.
A new editor joins the Bangor Express, a wee, local paper that doesn't live up to his previous job, the broadsheet The Guardian. He learns to love all the characters and maybe even fancy the young female reporter.
    Another Bateman classic
As someone who is Bangor "born and bread" this was another excellent Bateman read, close to home. So many twists and turns and the usual humour that makes you nearly feel like apologising for laughing. Loved it!
    Entertaining
I'm abog fan of Bateman and I found this book entertaining but not a favourite.

    Narrator: Helen Baxendale

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-02-16
    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd

    Publisher's Summary:
This is the story of Lizzie Vogel, a 15 year old girl who finds herself working in a ramshackle old people's home in the English suburbs. It is the late 1970s and the place is in chaos - there's a much swisher old people's home nearer the supermarket with better parking which is taking all the best patients; Matron seems to be utterly without qualifications, and Lizzie has no idea what she's doing.
But, the longer Lizzie stays the more she discovers about the patients and the staff - she uncovers a love affair and a plot to kidnap one of the patients, as well as discovering how not to wash false teeth or give an old lady a bath. Very funny, tender and wonderfully gripping, Paradise Lodge is a celebration of chaos, love and old people.

    absolute Paradise
this is a lovely novel - basically about a 15 years old who works in a 1970's nursing/convalescent home with elderly ladies, gents and a variety of nurses when she should be at school. That's it. It's her story and it is funny and moving in equal measure. It helps that I am from that part of the world and understand the phrasing, the verbal short-cuts and the slang. The places are familiar even down to the roads. The accent is only slightly Leicester more Brummie so it is a joy to listen to for me as come from half way between the two but I will allow it might grate on some. Its voice is very much the 1970's but it is not a nostalgia piece - just listen - its worth it.
    Perfect for summer beach listening
Would you consider the audio edition of Paradise Lodge to be better than the print version?
Yes. Helen Baxendale was the perfect reader for this book and added an extra dimension to an already very good book.
What other book might you compare Paradise Lodge to, and why?
I can't think of anything to compare it to. It combines lots of laugh out loud moment with a poignant and moving story.
Which character as performed by Helen Baxendale was your favourite?
The story is told from the point of view of Lizzie Vogel and Helen Baxendale totally captured her unique voice.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It is both funny and sad. A really enjoyable book.
A riotous joy from start to finish
This is a very welcome sequel to Man at the Helm, the story of the Vogel family and their hilarious attempts to find a man for their batty but beautiful mother. This time we focus on Lizzie Vogel, the gifted but anarchic younger daughter of the family who takes up a full time job in an old peoples' home whilst still being obliged to attend school. In the meantime her mother is having a tricky time maintaining her relationship with her 'Man at The Helm' and the family's financial worries are taking them dangerously near to the edge.
This is a wonderfully entertaining story full of delicious humour that borders on being downright bawdy at times, but in the best possible way. Lizzie is a terrific character, unafraid of expressing her harsh opinions but at the same time tender and kind, but only when it is deserved. As with the previous book there are moments of poignancy in the story but they never stray into being oversentimental.
Nina Stibbe is a massively gifted writer and I personally think she has the characterisation skills of Jane Austen coupled with the linguistic humour of Victoria Wood.

    Publisher's Summary:
There are only three things in this world that are certain: death, taxes, and babies. Nobody knows this truth better than Emily McCoy, a third-year resident working in Baby City, the affectionate nickname for the busy Labor and Delivery unit at a New York City hospital. On a typical day in Baby City, Emily delivers more babies than the number of hours of sleep she manages to squeeze in that night. And definitely more than the number of dates she's been on since she started her training in OB/GYN two years earlier. As Emily works tirelessly to safely herald baby after baby after baby (after baby) into the world, she becomes well acquainted with the three hard facts of Baby City:
    1. Babies never come when you want them to.
    2. Babies always come when you don't want them to.
    3. You don't know who your true friends are until your baby is sliding down the birth canal.
    Members Reviews:
    Reads like fiction, still interesting
What did you love best about Baby City?
The variety of cases that were covered, easy to follow, and the side stories of personal relationship stuff was a bonus.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lori Moran?
Her "normal" speaking voice was okay. It was when she did "voices"...aghhhhh. Especially "Ted". If he had been a main character, I could not have finished the book.
    Any additional comments?
This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom
Great story that could really be real
Interesting, funny and sad story thats true to life. Never worked in OB, but the life of the hospital, residents, patients , and attendings rings very true to life in my experience. The narrator is different and excellent and adds a punch to it all. I loved listening to her.
If you want a good story that's not BS based like TV and the the authors of "medical thrillers", this is it. This is the third time in a little more than a year that i am enjoying listening to this book. Dr Stoddard nailed it.
Some Redeeming Qualilties, But Not My Favorite
I did not like the main character, nor was I interested in her personal life. Liked the birthing sections the best. Interesting behind-the-scenes look, though, at an ob-gyns life. I received this audio book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Good story, narrator tried but failed miserably!
I liked the story but it was hard to listen to. Since I paid for it I did finish it but the narrator was so difficult to listen to. Her "voices" for characters was so awful. She has a monotone voice and when she tried a different voice for different characters it sounded like each character was yawning or about to fall asleep. Even when the character exclaimed it was hard to tell from the the narrators depends depiction of it. I would have just stopped listening and gone to read it but I have 5 kids and there isn't time to sit and read a book. The story was intriguing and a good pace.
    I had to stop listening
    Any additional comments?
I couldn't get through this book. The narration was very off-putting. Very. The story itself only excelled with the baby birthing scenes The little vignettes were quite rewarding and what I expected from the title. The main character, however, was a tosser.
Up until the time I just could not take anymore, Emily was a horrid person.

So good! Great companion to the show. Another good companion? The Better Call Saul podcast Breaking Goodman on iTunes. Check it out.
A book about real life and the law
This book is absolutely priceless, especially for all the fans of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. It reads very easy, throws in great gab about how to do this and how to do that, and it makes the judicial system out to be a joke in this country, of which we all know it is. Real life pointers make it a smooth read and I am very satifisied with it!
No need to go to jail, this proves it.
This book is a well put together guide for everyday living to stay out of jail. Steve E. Huff is a pro. Me and My family thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of valuable information free.

    I laughed out loud!
I was given this audio book in exchange for an honest review. This book was just funny from the beginning.
I love things that make me laugh and I loved this book. This is the story of Julep, a young woman getting ready to set up her own dental practice. Her life is turning out to be quite interesting. She meets a really yummy guy who can't take his eyes off of her. Turns out she has a painted mustache she wasn't aware of. They develop a relationship that is a friends only relationship with a tinge of something more. It's difficult to believe any more of a relationship could develop with the craziness that is her life. I don't want to give anything away, but try to imagine Celine Dion, hair dye, cops on the take, tanning solution, dental floss and mobsters all in one story, It was light, funny and so entertaining!
By now you know I liked the story, but the narration was just as good. Alissa Zea did a great job with the pacing, the voices and the overall craziness!
    CUTE
Would you listen to In Her Way again? Why?
I don't really listen to books again once I've listen to them once. If there was a sequel I would definitely purchase it.
What did you like best about this story?
As I previously stated this audiobook is "CUTE"! I enjoyed getting to know the characters and found myself laughing out loud multiple times. Fun, Funny and entertaining!
What does Alissa Zea bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Alissa Zea was perfect for this audiobook! She was able to bring each of the characters to life with the quirkiness of her voice.
If you could rename In Her Way, what would you call it?
    Girl Power!
In Her Way is...Way Out There...just as promised
What made the experience of listening to In Her Way the most enjoyable?
The author, thoroughly enjoys watching comedies. It was evident throughout the entire piece. There were many times I thought of Lucille Ball. Other times, Jerry Lewis or Seinfeld or Friends.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story had way too many crazy situations for me to enjoy listening to it more than once. Overall it just wasn't my type of story. Having mentioned this, the narrator did a great job of pulling off the funny punchlines, the snarky behavior of the main character (Jules) and the sillyness of her air-head secretary (Kaylee). Bravo. Unfortunately, it was hard for me at times to distinguish the various female main characters when they were in the same scene.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It was too much for one sitting. Perfect for gardening though.
    Any additional comments?
I received a copy via audiobook boom in exchange for an unbiased review.

I'm always nervous when I listen to the second book from an author I've recently discovered, nervous because I'm not sure if the book will live up to my expectations.

    Publisher's Summary:
Darcy shares his secret vow and his bed with Lizzie Bennet in this fifth book in the Mister Darcy series of comedic mysteries. Will Lizzie help Darcy prevent the theft of the legendary Red Rosary? Can Lizzie get even with Caroline Bingley? And who is the mystery woman in Lizzie's father's life? Can be heard as a standalone, but it helps to listen to the series from the beginning.
Based on the enduring characters created by Jane Austen, this is a contemporary spin on a classic tale of love denied and love discovered.
    Members Reviews:
    A fun story
Lizzy wants to know Darcy's secrets, but he isn't quite ready to share them. There is angst, but the comedic errors on Lizzie's part had me laughing. The lotion and the antique desk, the mud room at the spa and Caroline Bingley. Barbara writes with such humor and keeps the plot moving along. There is even a character called Hyacinth Bucket, named after a favorite character from Keeping Up Appearances. I had a difficult time getting out of the car to go into work. The narrator, has kept the voices distinct throughout the series and was enjoyable to listen tI received the audiobook as a gift from the author in exchange for my honest review.
    Another great gigglefest!
I admit to yawning at Pride and Prejudice, but this modernized farcical series has me glued to it and laughing myself sillier. There is never any boredom with Silkstone books, only awful puns, lots of snark, twisty plots, and a sidewise take on things familiar. See publisher's notes for a clue to the plot, but there is soooo much more to the story! And if you can plug it into your ear, so much the better! Might not be suited for reading when strangers are near, or with liquids in hand due to severe cases of giggles.
Jannie M gives a better performance every time she records a new episode, but I must be a New Yorker at heart, because I am thankful for the rate of speed feature.
    I Love the Darcy Series
I really loved this book. Lizzy's character is a lot of fun. In this book someone is out to steal the Red Rosary and Mister Darcy asks for help from Lizzy to find out who is behind it.
Mister Darcy finally breaks down and tells Lizzy his deepest secret.
    Cute mystery love story
I received this audible in exchange for a honest review.
The story was cute and the reader did a great job with the character switches. The story held your attention with the seemingly trouble this main character can find without looking for it. I still laugh at her attempt at fixing Darcy's desk that her lotion ruined. Jealousy and greed and funny escapades.
    Mr. Darcy is a Templar!
This was an interesting premise for Jane Austen fan fiction. For an avowed Jane Austen fan, the plot was a little thin and some of the characters were a stretch. But I did enjoy parts of the story and the tongue in cheek style of Barbara Silkstone's storytelling. In the end, I didn't love it but thought it was a bit of fun and good for some light listening.
Lizzie is about to become engaged to Mr. Darcy but they keep getting interrupted. And Lizzie is questioning whether or not to accept Mr. Darcy, who obviously still has secrets he is keeping from her.

Everything that's good about an audio book!
    Any additional comments?
If you've ever seen the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" then you'll know the joy that awaits you with this listen!!
This is a very fun listen but at it's core, the joy is in the narration. The different voices that this narrator were able to convey, nay convincingly convey, were astounding. Can an audio book be considered a tour de force?! If so, bravo, bravo, bravo!!!
Laugh yourself silly with this one!
This book is simply too much fun! There are culture misinterpretations, language misinterpretation, planned and inadvertent silliness. The author is excellent at invoking visualization of incidents as well as individuals and settings. Although it moves along at a rapid pace, there is no difficulty in keeping up and laughing away any current negative perception of reality. If you have ever seen a french braid, with it's way of adding more into each plait as it comes into being, you have a visual on the way that this book moves ever onward, getting better and funnier as it moves along. I'm not into reviews giving recaps or spoilers, but that would be a daunting task for one who did choose to do so. Simply be aware that the publisher's blurb is simply a teaser from the beginning of the book and that it only continues merrily from there.
I had the audio version, and Joel Froomkin performed it magnificently!

    Excellent Romp, Flawless Narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this to a friend. The story is witty and hilarious, and the narration is a perfect example of what I think an audio book should sound like.
What did you like best about this story?
It was completely unpredictable. The characters were all very strange but believable, and every plot point was skillfully entangled into the story.
Which character as performed by Joel Froomkin was your favorite?
There were so many great characters, and Joel handles them all so well. I can only narrow it down to three: Hans, Toby, and Benito.
If you could rename The Gelatin Coast, what would you call it?
The Alphabetical Vendetta Against the Animal Kingdom

This audio book was quite a ride. I don't often have the time or patience to listen to fiction audio books, but I was able to get through this one easily on a road trip.

    Small Town Romance
What made the experience of listening to See Bride Run! the most enjoyable?
This was a sweet romance without any angst. A very easy read and I love small town romances. I really enjoyed the last two chapters and how the story came together. I wasn't expecting one of the secrets that was disclosed.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked all of the supporting characters and how practically the entire town had some part in making Annie's new experience enjoyable. As a supporting character, my favorite was Lillian and her little secret. I also loved Annie and how she finally took charge of her life. She stood up to her father and learned that life can be simple without all of the extravagant material objects that she was used to.
What about Elizabeth Kletts performance did you like?
This is the first book that I have listened to from this narrator. I liked her voice and think that she really added to the story.
    Any additional comments?
I would like to thank Ms. Hughes for reaching out and offering this audio to me.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. There was a twist and a slight mystery towards the end. I felt that the end of the book was rushed and could have included more detail on both Sam and Annies life. The twist that occurred could have also been a tad bit longer and could have given the reader more detail on how Annies relationship changed with Lillian and with Sam. I am from Atlanta, GA and could definitely see how a small town would embrace Annie as one of their own.
This was a wonderful and fun book
I loved the story of the socialite going running before the wedding & the little mystery in the new place & the show of how friendly the southern people really are. I hope everyone enjoys the narrator, she does a wonderful job.

I fell in love with this all over again!
If you could sum up See Bride Run! in three words, what would they be?
    refreshing, sweet, and sexy!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Annie of course. She's feisty and with her new-found freedom, she wishes to keep on learning things no matter how hard stuff can get.

Her dream of moving to London is about to come true now that all that stands between her and her new job is a few unpacked suitcases. Or so she thinks until her old boss shows up with one more little task for her to complete before she leaves for Europe. Her new assignment involves a handsome cowboy named Cody, his two rascally nephews, and a mountain of laundry...all of which would be no problem for any self-respecting fairy godmother.
While Fiona manages to handle the laundry and the boys, she quickly learns that she's not immune to Cody's considerable charm. It takes everything she's got to stay focused on completing her task so she can head to London. But when tragedy strikes, Fiona realizes that it will take more magic than she has to try to save a life and mend her own broken heart.

A good start but needs work
    Any additional comments?
I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom. There wasn't a lot of story development in some areas. I would've liked to know the connection between the mother and Fiona other than Tessa. It felt a little clunky and then for her to just have appeared on the ranch with Liam. There were other incidents that seemed unlikely that Fiona would've never experienced unless the story background had been a little more developed.
    Cute, quick listen
Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Wand Ranch to be better than the print version?
Yes, it's almost always more fun to listen to a book and usually helps you get a better feel for the story and characters.
Would you be willing to try another book from Caroline Mickelson? Why or why not?
Yes, I would be willing. The story was fun and made for a quick and easy listen.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene when the boys tried to prove Cody loved Fiona by making him think she was hurt.
Who was the most memorable character of Magic Wand Ranch and why?
Fiona. She was the character who went through the most changes.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this book however the reader needs to understand that the story is very quick, the plot not terribly developed and sort of rushed, and the wrap up tidy. I generally enjoy stories that are much longer and have a deep, almost convoluted plot line. This is definitely not that type of story.
    Sweet, Fun & Magical Story
What a Fun story to listen too. It was easy paced and flowed naturally. I loved everything about it. Leonor A. Woodworth did a wonderful job as narrator. I like how she differentiated between the male/female and younger nephews voices. It was very easy to follow the story and know who was speaking. I will definitely be reading more o Caroline Mickelson's work.
    Adorable
Fiona is a fairy godmother with a mission. Extremely light listening while I do housework or take a walk. Loved reviewing
    Delightful RomCom
If you could sum up Magic Wand Ranch in three words, what would they be?
Author Caroline Mickelson did a wonderful job combining Fairy Godmothers and Cowboys in this unique story. I love the characters; especially Fiona, even when she is clueless she charges ahead with a calm determination. The relationship between Fiona and Cody is very sweet.

When the postman, Dave Hinchy, pops the wrong piece of post through the letterbox of Ruby, he causes a brand of mayhem he could never account for. Dave is mixed up with a secret society - The Rosy Crustaceans. They are led by a sinister doctor, with very dubious intentions of world domination, all starting with the annexation of Widdowshins with Hades. Ruby recognises him for what he is and gathers her forces together - her twin sister, her cat, a rather hysterical vicar and a koi carp, off they trot to take on the powers of darkness...St. Michael pops in to lend a hand too.

Quirky, Funny, and full of lovable characters
I cannot get enough of the Widdowshins brand of humor. Itâs so refreshing to read a book that makes each of the characters part of an ongoing joke. (The dimwitted yet lovable cat and a monkey skull named Eddy too snarky for his own good to name a few.) In some ways the people of Widdowshins reminds me of Joss Whedonâs, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is mostly because of how the cast of quirky characters interact with each other. Thereâs this light-hearted playfulness and rivalry going on throughout the book that just kept bringing Buffy and Cordelia to mind.
Once again, the scenes with the dimwitted cat where my favorite, but the level 10 sass of Ruby, the witch leading the way, came in a close second. She commands her rag-tag magical team with a confidence I love. Sheâs also incredibly intelligent and it shows in how she works her way through the mystery that is the Dave Hincy code as well as how she craftily outs the bad guy.
One of the really exciting elements of this book is the obvious care and research that went into the rituals and characters involving the Occult. There is a lot of real information added to these pages that made the scenes with magic really stand out. The ones involving tarot cards and angels I found particularly fascinating because Iâve actually seen some of these rituals performed before. (Although not as dramatically as they happen in the book. lol.
Iâve said it before, but Iâm saying it again.
The most enjoyable aspect of this book is how itâs been translated into audio. The narrator knocks his performances out of the park, creating some fantastic depth to the characters with his performances. Each character has their own believable voice, and pattern of speech, which really brings them to life.
One thing that this audiobook does differently is that, rather than a lot of sound effects and/or a score underlying the story, there are moments when a song track will pop in and change up the atmosphere. They were great additions to the storytelling. And I have to mention, the music that is included in this book is really fun, it makes me feel like Iâve landed in Widdowshins and Iâm listening to the atmosphere of the town. I would love to have the tracks separate so I could listen to them on their own from time to time.
For a light-hearted read, that will get you laughing while demons cause mayhem in the quirkiest of small towns, this is an absolute must-read.
