New York Times best-selling author Hannah Howell traverses the embattled border between England and Scotland, where two warring families prolong centuries of discord.
Storm Eldon was first caught up in the war between England and Scotland as a young girl, when she and her family were held hostage by their sworn enemies, the MacLagans. Years later, Storm finds herself trapped in the clutches of her Scottish adversaries once again. Now she must fight to preserve her loyalties, guard her virtue, and resist the charms of Tavis MacLagan, her handsome Highland captor.

    Entertaining Wishy-Washy Highlander!!
This one was in my library for a while and I finally got the chance to listen to it. I enjoyed this book because it kept my interest throughout. This entertaining story has adventure, romance, slight mystery, family struggles and intrigue. My only negative statement is that it lacked some believability. Both the hero and the heroine seemed a little over the top with their "feelings'. Storm seems too perfect at times and lacked emotional strength. Tavis is the typical "play the field" type of guy who was a bit wishy-washy. (So many times I just wanted to say "Get some backbone you idiot!). The other characters I found more acceptable and realistic. That being said, I still recommend this book and am giving this story 4 stars because it was the type of book you can't put down.....I had to know how it ended.
The narrator also made it easy to listen to. Her accents were really good for each character..
Great romance, wonderful imagery, excellent plot!
My first Hannah Howell novel, and all I can say is I am impressed.Ms. Howell is very talented in her ability to draw me into the story and to become absorbed into her amazing world building. This book had the perfect combination of romance, love, battle, family drama, intrigue and scheming to please all fans of Highlander romance. From the moment Storm blew into Tavis MacLagan life, it was changed forever. She is a force of nature and at their first meeting, when she was a young girl; Tavis and his whole clan knew they were witnessing something special. Years later when another opportunity came around for him to claim her as a woman, he jumps at the chance. Now she is his prisoner and he will possess her body, but nothing more. Storm has an amazing ability to weave magic and capture the whole MacLagan clan with her mere presence. I enjoyed the progression of Tavis and Storms relationship, life in the clan and the intricacies that it entailed. I also appreciated the glimpse of these turbulent times and to witness how love could cure generations of fighting and change the future. I found the storyline strong and well-paced; excellence all around. Its a complete package of history, love and action with amazing characters, exciting times and a titillating plot.

On the eve of her wedding to the heir of Saiturn Manor, the stunningly beautiful Gytha is shocked to learn that her betrothed, a man she barely knew, is dead. Now she must marry the new heir, Thayer Saiturn, a battle-hardened knight, known as the Red Devil. With a face scarred in battle and a heart broken in love, Thayer has no interest in marriage. But can his new bride look beyond his scars to find the hidden passion and undying love locked deep inside him?

Good Story -- Not So Good Narration!
Gytha, a famously beautiful young woman, was betrothed at birth to the heir of Saitun Manor. The times being fraught with danger, her father deemed it safer to just betroth her to "the heir" whomever that might end up being, rather than a specific heir. For most of Gytha's life, that was decent, handsome William.
On the eve of her wedding, her father decided it was time to tell her that William was dead. He'd known for a while, but didn't think she needed to be told until now that she's to marry ROBERT. Gytha does not feel comfortable with Robert, even though he is nice looking, but she will do her duty.
Imagine Gytha's surprise when she arrives at the altar to find she's actually marryingTHAYER. Thayer, the heir second in line from William, was believed killed in France, until he showed up to attend the wedding of his cousin WILLIAM... or so he thought.
Thayer a renowned warrior known as the "Red Devil", scarred both in battle and of heart, does not want to marry the beautiful Gytha, fearing she could not be happy with a scarred, red haired husband and would not be faithful to him.
I liked the story, but the narration ruined it for me. Mary Jane Wells does not have the ability to change her voice enough for different characters to be easily identified. She reads quite fast, and without proper distinction between Gytha and Thayer (as well as others), it takes awhile to figure out who is talking.
I cannot recommend "Beauty and the Beast", because of the narrator.
    Good Overall Performance, good story
Would you try another book from Hannah Howell and/or Mary Jane Wells?
My favorite book by Hannah Howell, Highland Champion, sounds like an overdramatic constipated old man read it. That reader is excellent with Canadian/American style books, but is so fake in British/Scottish as to be a constant irritant. As that reader did many of my favourite Hannah Howell books, no, I would not buy those from Audible. Mary Jane Wells is excellent with conflict and cantankerous novels, but she has such a limited way of reading that I fear she would miss the mark for a novel requiring softer reading. She did a good job with this novel, but doesn't seem to have a large enough range to do many different styles of readings well.
If youve listened to books by Hannah Howell before, how does this one compare?
This one is better than the ones I have heard, all by a certain reader.
What aspect of Mary Jane Wellss performance would you have changed?
I would have softened it, made it less shrill.
Was Beauty and the Beast worth the listening time?
    Yes.

Sometimes the only way to love - and redemption - is to make a deal with the devil. After the death of her parents, Lady Aurora de Marquise is left with no illusions. Stripped of her birthright and betrayed by her uncle, escape is her only option. With her life on the line, she narrowly avoids another murder attempt - only to run headlong into Lord Brigham de Mornay, a man most consider a monster. With her uncle's henchmen nipping at her heels, Aurora knows better than to trust a stranger - especially one as compelling as Brigham. Well-honed instincts urge her to flee before his abundant charm takes a nasty turn into aggression - and she ends up neck deep in trouble. Wary, but undeniably drawn to him, Aurora pits her will against his, challenging his authority every chance she gets. But when her uncle manages to track her, she is left with the ultimate choice - surrender to the man who now holds her heart or risk it all trying to escape again. Gritty and fast-paced, Warrior's Revenge brings to life the magnificence of the medieval age while exploring the meaning of honor, duty, and nature of true love.
    Members Reviews:
    A little slow and inaccurate
The book started off strong but got really slow in the middle. I had to force myself to keep listening for several chapters, but then it picked back up. Something that got on my nerves a little was the use of modern slang and sayings for a historical story.
The narrator did a good job of putting emotion into the story, but the guys' voices were terrible. All the voices (girl or guy) were low, lower, and lowest. It was hard to distinguish them.
    Enjoyed it
What made the experience of listening to Warrior's Revenge the most enjoyable?
It was your typical medieval romance but there were a few surprises in there and I found it entertaining. I liked the heroine just fine - I think her flaws were a result of her sheltered life and evil uncle. The narrator wasn't my favorite (didn't care for her accent and starts/stops in odd places) but she wasn't bad. Oh and the cover picture is weird since the hero was a baron and granted he was basically a war lord, but the descriptions mention tunic and leggings. Anyway, I thought it was a good value for the price I paid.
    good story
    Any additional comments?
this book was a good read, the narrator's hesitation between every sentence was aggravating and distracting at first but I got used to it. I would have liked an epilogue but over all I enjoyed the book.
    Really good historical romance :D
    4-4.5 stars
This was a really good story. I liked Aurora and Brigham and was really drawn in to their story. It was interesting and engaging enough that I had trouble putting it down until I was done.
Aurora is a Lady but due to bad circumstances (both her parents dying) she's been taken in by her uncle who treats her like a slave. He and his wife find any reason to beat her and even make reasons so they have an excuse to do so. One night when it becomes clear that her death at her uncle's hands is close, Aurora decides she has no choice but try to escape. She escapes in the middle of the night with the help with her trusty maid, Nate.
Brigham is a Barron and a hard man with a vicious reputation. He's had to fight hard to be accepted because he was illegitimately born but he's made a good life for himself. He was married once but to a horrible woman that ended up dying and leaving him a widower.

    A Love Worth Waiting For......
The Warrior is a entertaining addition to this highland series. I enjoyed the other books in this series so I was looking forward to Duncan's story. As with the other books, the characters are well written and are easily relatable to the heartbreak, struggles, and triumphs along the way. I admired the enduring love between Duncan and Moira and the strong family bond they shared. Oh, and I loved Sar the dog! He was a wonderful addition to the family.
My only negative would be that any conflicts in the story got resolved too quickly. The battles could have been a little more suspenseful and challenging. Well, maybe that will happen in the next book in the series.
Derek Perkins does a great job narrating. His voice has a way of bringing the characters to life, which I appreciate.
Overall, this is a very nice.....feel good book.
    Second Chance Historical Romance
I love second chance romance novels and this was no different.
Take 2 lovers from the opposite side of the proverbial track. A well meaning father who thinks his daughter marrying into status equals her being happy. A misunderstanding between lovers and you have a great story
The loyal warrior and the lady...ENJOYABLE
The 3rd installment in the Return of the Highlanders Series is much like the first 2....sweet, sexy, heartwarming, and just a down-right enjoyable listen.
What I LOVE about this series is that the conflicts are solved quickly and the listener isn't waiting an hour for the couple to resolve the issue. Now that also makes it a little less dramatic and maybe in some peoples opinion not the best writing technique,
....but ....I wanted a easy listen that took me through the gamut of emotions without making me sweat for hours at every problem that cropped up!
This series is that for me...the perfect feel good romantic series.
Get all 4 and start listening!
Enjoyable, but follows the formula a bit too long.
I enjoy Highlander books that are read by men. Can't stand male voices that sound like women. I no longer even buy Highlander books (or SEAL books or any that involve a group of men, think BDB) read by women. Derek Perkins does a good job of differentiating between male and female voices and he does a great accent, though I'm no expert there. Sounds good to me.
The story itself was void of surprises, but still enjoyable. Misunderstandings between the H and the h are common in this genre, but I think this one went on for too long.

    Members Reviews:
Very good standalone offshoot of the Dark series
    4 stars
This was a very good story. I liked both Nicoletta and Giovanni and found their story to be well written and engaging. This doesn't really seem to have a tie to the Carpathians in the Dark series but both Giovanni and Nicoletta have certain "abilities" that may mean they had Carpathian ancestry.
Nicoletta is a young woman that serves as the healer for the village where she grew up. Her father was killed when she was too young to know him but her mother and aunt raised her with love until they both died. Since then, she's been mothered by another village woman, Maria Pia.
Don Giovanni Scarletti is the head of a family that's plagued by a curse. Many women and even some men have died in the last decade or 2 in his family home and there's an evil pall over it that's hard to escape. Giovanni never planned to marry because of the curse but when he meets Nicoletta for the first time, he's lost and is determined that they're meant to be together and that he will claim her as his.
Maria Pia was the village's midwife but Nicoletta has much better healing skills, some that are mystical enough that she could be branded a witch and killed for it. Nicoletta's village has always protected her secret and Maria Pia plays the senior healer while Nicoletta acts like the simpleminded assistant whenever they go outside of their village to heal someone. As this story begins, Nicoletta and Maria Pia have been called to the Don's home because of an illness. They get there to find the Don and his niece, Sophie, are both terribly sick. Nicoletta is able to determine that something was tainted in some soup they both ate and is able to heal them. Unfortunately, (at least in Nicolett'a opinion) this leads to Giovanni wanting to marry her and invoking the marriage covenant that allows the Don to claim any un-claimed woman in the local villages as his wife.
Nicoletta had already been skirting the advances of a couple of young men from her village and she truly had no interest in getting married. She had her garden in the hills and her healing and was perfectly content with that. When Giovanni claims Nicoletta, she's freaked at the idea of living in such a horrible place and she gets claustrophobia just thinking about it. Regardless of her fears, Giovanni wont let her go and she moves to his home and becomes his wife. There are multiple intrigues going on and it's hard for Nicoletta to know who to trust and if Giovanni is among the trustworthy.

    Philandering Charmer!
I really enjoyed this second book in the series. Even though Alex is a philanderer he is still so charming, sensitive (in a warrior way) and very funny. Glynis was just as delightful. She is no shrinking violet....more of a dandy lion. She was not afraid to speak her mind, as well as, learn from mistakes and move on.
I'm glad they are staying with the same narrator for all the books. He did a nice job.
I do agree with the reviewer 'Candateshia Pafford' about reading book 1 first. There is a lot of prophecy that comes true in book 2 that is quite funny and poignant. If you don't know the prophecies the story will feel flat, leave you a little confused, and you'd miss out on a good laugh.
Looking forward to Duncan's adventure next!
Great Sequal.. one of the best Highlander series!
Wow...Alex story was awesome. I so had to go back to book 1 and listen to the prophecy of for four highlander's women... and it was so funny when Alex meet Glynis and she had pox! I laughed out loud when they started ooze off her face! OMG! This was so good. You must get book one to really enjoy book 2... You really need to pay attention to the prophecy in the very beginning of book 1. Each Highlander will get their women that way. This was just so good. Alex was the player of the group too, I didn't think his book would be this soon...but I am so glad it was. I can't wait for Duncan... I hope he get his gal! I have already pre-ordered!!! Best highlander series... This is actual better than Maya Bank's McCabe Brother Series and that is saying a lot...because I loved that series... that series was all 3 to 4 stars!!! Smex was really cute and fairly decent.. Not a whole lot of it in here, but enough to go along with this story.
    Narration was great.
    A great buy/credit.
    Great Narration
The story is basically about the life of Alex, the brother of the Chieftain of their clan. Alex is a gorgeous warrior who loves to fight, wench and tell stories. Glenna is the fiery, outspoken daughter of the Chieftain of a neighboring clan. Alex has sworn not to marry, and Glenna has swore never to remarry-- having knifed her husband and been set-aside.
The story moved a little too slow to hold my interest, so it took me awhile to finish it, but the last several chapters were very good with lots of action. All-in-all it was a decent read. The hero and heroine were likeable. The author did not use a lot of filler words, did a good job with her descriptions, and the sexual scenes were not too long nor too frequent, although it was often on Alex's mind.
    The narration was superb.

When the dashing Jack Carstares is unfairly accused of cheating at cards, he leaves the country in disgrace. Returning some years later disguised as a highwayman, his reappearance heralds a dramatic chain of events that includes a Duke, a damsel, a duel, and not one, but two kidnappings. Written when she was just 17, The Black Moth was Heyers first novel, but it bears many of the hallmarks of her later romances, being vivid, witty, and peppered with historical insight.
    Members Reviews:
    Heyer's First Book--Melodrama in Spades
This is Georgette Heyers first book; it appeared in 1921, when its author was only 19 or 20 years old. In a letter to her agent two years later, Heyer herself called it "a very juvenile effort." That seems harsh to me, although the story is definitely over-the-top melodramatic. But even this early in her career, Heyer displayed a sense of humor and sophistication that lift this somewhat silly and highly implausible story above the average.
The Black Moth is Hugh "Devil" Belmanoir, Duke of Andover. Even in the presence of Jack Carstares, the oh-so-lovable, handsome, and honorable hero, we are drawn to the villianous Duke. It seems Heyer must have felt the same way; in 1926 she wrote "These Old Shades," one of her best books, in which the lead character is the amoral Justin "Satanas" Alistair, Duke of Avon. "Shades" takes place several years after "Moth" and is set primarily in Paris, but it's recognizably about most of the same characters. "Moth" is definitely the backstory to "Shades," even though for some reason Heyer changed all the names. (Heyer extended the Duke's story to the next generation in "Devil's Cub," and his grandaughter Barbara appears at the Battle of Waterloo in "An Infamous Army.")
"The Black Moth" is not one of Heyers Regency (c. 1800) novels, it is set around 1750. The language is arcane but witty. Rhind-Tutt, a narrator Ive never encountered before (I would have remembered that name), takes some getting used to (he r-e-a-d-s r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w) but gets into the action as the melodrama escalates. The climactic duel between Jack and the Duke is great, Jacks agonized rejection (for her own good, of course) of the woman he loves is heartbreaking, and the Dukes hilariously impromptu dinner party at the book's end is a delight. These scenes are as good as any Heyer ever wrote. Thanks to Naxos for giving us this one unabridged. I thought I read somewhere that Naxos will be releasing more unabridged Heyers. If so, there go my credits!
Julian Rhind-Tutt is THE BEST narrator ever!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Heyer's wonderfully developed characters come alive perfectly with the voices developed by Julian Rhind-Tutt.
What other book might you compare The Black Moth to and why?
Georgette Heyers 'sequels' to The Black Moth - These Old Shades and Devils Cub are worth a read.
What does Julian Rhind-Tutt bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Julian Rhind-Tutt does an exceptional job narrating this book as his voice characterisations are perfect. He understands each character and the way they speak and encapsulates their personalities so well.

    Hard To Finish
I had a hard time connecting with this audiobook and it's a hard one for me to rate, because it had a cute storyline and could have been entertaining IF it didn't move so slowly. I had to stop listening to it several times, becoming irritated at it's slow pace. It seemed to take forever to reach the end of the book.
Meridith Mitchell performed well, yet did not pull me into the story, as some narrators have the ability to do... or maybe it was just the book.
My overall rating is less than satisfactory.
    couldn't put this story down
loved the story. it had many twists and turns. great characters. I like the style.
    Just LOVED it!!!
I love JL's books. Her skill of writing is amazing. Started reading her at the age of 13 and 17 years later, still perfect! This novel just reminds me why I love her stories so much! Listening to it just made my day! Her voice was wonderful portraying each character.
    Love in the Wild West
I love this book. The sceeming throughout the story gives it life. It's almost like reading 4 books at once. You have 4 or more love stories happening at once, killings, train robberies, & kidnappings. You will love this book!!!!!!
    not a bad read
not bad once you get into it. good for a holiday read but i wouldn't pay a lot for it.

    Publisher's Summary:
For Winfield Elliott, Viscount Stillwell, finding a prospective bride always seemed easy. Perhaps too easy. With three broken engagements to his name, Win is the subject of endless gossip. Yet his current mission is quite noble: to hire a company to repair his familys fire-damaged country house. Nothing disreputable in that - until the firms representative turns out to be a very desirable widow.
Lady Miranda Garret expected a man of Wins reputation to be flirtatious, even charming. But the awkward truth is that she finds him thoroughly irresistible. While Miranda resides at Millworth to oversee the work, Win occupies her days, her dreamsand soon, her bed. For the first time, the wicked Win has fallen in love. And what began as a scandalous proposition may yet become a very different proposal.

Fun in a very safe way
This story is about Miranda, a modern day, free thinking widow and Winfield Elliot, a man who likes his world to be predictable and orderly. Needless to say, when his house burns down and he needs to rebuild, a woman is the last person he expects to come to his aid, but when no one else is available to help him in the short span of time he has to work with he is forced to utilize Miranda Garret's help. A battle of wills ensues that eventually leads to love. It has some funny and charming moments.
The premise sounds promising and it is mildly entertaining but predictable. Those aren't always bad qualities in a book and at the sale price its well worth the price. I really like male narrator, Michael Page, he is very well spoken and I enjoyed his voice. I was disappointed that he made the lead character sound so old and stuffy but I enjoyed all his other voices. Overall, for me, this story was ok. Its a likable story that's fairly reliable in it's plot.
Not Ms. Alexanders best work by any means but a fairly safe way to pass the time. I wouldn't waste a credit on it, at the sale price of $7.27 its a value, anything more is a waste of time and money.
    Kinda Boring...
What did you like best about The Importance of Being Wicked? What did you like least?
I just coud not connect with the Hero and Heroine.
Would you ever listen to anything by Victoria Alexander again?
    Yes I would
    Any additional comments?
I just could not connect with story or the main characters. The book before this "What Happens At Christmas" was so much more engaging. I got lost in the story and lost track of time. I love when books do that. This book however just couldn't keep my attention.
Good story, but narrator distracted me.
    Setting: England, 1887
    Genre: Romance
Narration: I gave it 2 stars because I'm polite. Alrighty then... I cannot like Michael Page's voice, because it sounds like he is speaking from the back of his mouth, as if his vocal chords are tangled up. It wasn't irritating enough to make me turn off the book, but it did keep me from falling into the story as I do with a really good narrator. I will get the books I really want on Kindle rather than audio if he's the narrator.
The story has a nice plot. The hero is Winfield Elliott, Viscount Stillwell. He has the reputation of being somewhat of a rogue, plus he has had 3 broken engagements. But when his house burned, his stuffy side comes out, and so do his conservative ideals. The heroine is Lady Miranda Garret, a widow with a secret.

    Publisher's Summary:
When the devil meets an angel...
Country bred Lucy Craddock-Hayes is content with her quiet life, until the day she trips over an unconscious man - a naked unconscious man - and loses her innocence forever.
...he can take her to heaven...
Viscount Simon Iddesleigh was nearly beaten to death by his enemies. Now he's hell-bent on vengeance. But as Lucy nurses him back to health, her honesty startles his jaded sensibilities - even as it ignites a desire that threatens to consume them both.
    ...or to hell.
Charmed by Simon's sly wit, urbane manners, and even his red-heeled shoes, Lucy falls hard and fast for him. Yet as his honor keeps him from ravishing her, his revenge sends his attackers to her door. As Simon wages war on his foes, Lucy wages her own war for his soul, using the only weapon she has: her love.

TRICORNS, DUELS, A DEVIL & AN ANGEL - AHHH LOVELY
Book 3 of The Prince trilogy but it's totally a stand alone listen with the only link with the previous 2 books is a meeting in a coffee house as the three heroes chat and you realise they were all friends.
As I've said before in other reviews, when you invest 22 hours of your life to a book you hope that investment will be worth it. Well, this certainly was - from Chapter 1 I was hooked and continued to be drawn into a romantic love story that was woven between Simon, hell-bent on a quest to avenge his dead brother by duelling and Lucy a country Lady with a high provincial moral code.
We see Simon (a tortured soul) and Lucy (a smothered soul) being drawn together as she finds him naked and nurses him back to health after being left for dead. As their conversations bring feelings and desires the attraction between them grows rapidly and, as they throw quips and banter with each other, the humour melts their shells and melds them together but Simon has dark secrets and never feels good enough for his Angel Lucy.
However, the very likeable main and secondary characters and events all play their part in eventually tearing them apart with revenge, guilt, murder, heartbreak and desperation making their presence known too. Can love overcome all or will it just not be enough in this well written and well narrated story.
Just one thing - I would have loved an epilogue!
Worth a credit? It's a typical EH book - clever dialogue in a well thought out descriptive plot and if you can shrug off the historical imperfections along with the sexy bits - then you will thoroughly enjoy this long (you could double speed it) but very very enjoyable listen - so that's a Yes for the credit.
Serious Story Line and Serious Love Scenes
What did you love best about The Serpent Prince?
The love scenes were quite steamy while remaining romantic. So many romance novels tend to either be too sweet or too hardcore, but the Serpent Prince is a great compromise.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how there was a pretty meaty story other than the romance.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The only extreme reaction I had to this book was that I had to forcibly make my self NOT think about Simon is a wig and red pumps.
